Book Description

In an easy-to-follow, general outline format, this review focuses on passing coding certification exams. It has been completely updated for 2005 and covers anatomy and terminology for each body area, reimbursement issues, and an overview of CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS Coding. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a timed, scored, 150-question practice exam that is modeled on the actual certification exams and is designed to be taken twice - once as a pre-test and once as a post-test. An additional final exam must be taken with paper and pencil, to simulate the experience of the actual examinations. * The companion CD-ROM allows users to track their learning through Pre- and Post-tests. * A basic outline format provides figures for reference as needed, making the text easy to use and understand. * Essential information for both the AAPC (CPC) and AHIMA (CCS-P) exams is provided, with important aspects of physician coding highlighted throughout the text. ... "A powerful, true story of life and death in a major metropolitan hospital...Harrowing... An important book."
THE NEW YORK TIMES
What is life worth? And what is a life worth living? At a time when America faces vital choices about the future of its health care, former NEW YORK TIMES correspondent Lisa Belkin takes a powerful and poignant look at the inner workings of Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, telling the remarkable, real-life stories of the doctors, patients, families, and hospital administrators who must ask--and ultimately answer--the most profound and heart-rendng questions about life and death.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Humanity of Doctors
I could hardly put this book down until I was finished with it. It was not just eye-opening about how some of the ethical choices in medicine must be made, including the all-too necessary financial considerations. It showed how human doctors are and how difficult it can be for them to have to make heart-wrenching decisions in which there is no right answer, especially when it is clear that, no matter which choice they make, there is not going to be a good outcome for the patient. In spite of their training and attempt to insulate themselves emotionally from their cases in order to remain objective and professional, it's not always possible. Ms. Belkin's descriptions of doctors in tears was very moving, and proved to me that those people chose the right profession, because they really do care about their patients.
I found, by searching for them on the AMA web site, that a lot of the doctors in this book are still in practice in Houston (one is in Albuquerque). This search gave absolute credence to the fact that these stories are not fiction but about real people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jerky look into the TRUE CARE of the Modern Hospital
This book will keep your interests suspended in a state where bed time no longer matters, reading it until it is done and the re-skimming the chapters. Based in my home town of HOUSTON, TX. It gives you perspective on the true heros of the health care system.

This book has confirmed my interests in becoming a doctor and it will serve as a symbol of my ability to serve and my longing to be the best in the field of my choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Lisa, for being fair
Having a child featured in this book, I have read it several times. Lisa did a fantastic job when she wrote this book. You will find it to be a very insightful book. Having lived through this ordeal myself, I know that Lisa tried very hard to make sure that her facts are real and accurate. If you enjoy stories about the medical field I trully believe that you will find this one hard to put down until you have finished it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodmedical novel
I love books about the problems of the Medical community. This one was very good. The author included factual information along with true like human interest stories of real people in Houston, Texas in the 80's. I left this book at a book exchange at The Plaza Las Glorias in Cozumel, Mexico on 10-28-00 around 9:00am and it was gone by 11:00am. I would love to know where it went. I hope Amazon prints this.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book!
Ms. Belkin follows the work of the ethics commitee at Hermann Hospital. For anyone who enjoys true medical stories and difficult biomedical ethics problems, this is a great novel. Ms. Belkin does not present solutions, since in most cases there are no "right" solutions. Instead she provides an objective account of the cases from the point of view of all parties involved. This would also be an excellent book to use for discussion in a biomedical ethics clas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to review
These cards were very useful while studying for my microbiology test (in medical school). While the cards are not comprehensive, they do cover the material you are likely encounter on tests. The cards are very well organized by types of organisms, which helps in memorizing. There are also a few summary cards, which gives you a kind of "road map" so that you know how a specific organism is related to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST CONCISE MICRO REVIEW CARDS ON THE MARKET
The first 7 cards are on the organ systems and the various microbes that infect the system. Example is the card for the Gastrointestinal System Infections: it includes a line drawing of the entire system with pins to the organs along with a list of the microbes that infect that organ and the card number of said microbe. Before each microbe section there is a dichotomous key for biochemical test reactions/antibiotic reactions and on the back of that card all the key things you need to know for the group of microbes. There are 22 cards for Gram Positive, 21 for Gram Negative, 13 cards in "other bacteria" (this includes acid-fast, spirochetes, rickettsia, and chlamydia), 26 cards for the RNA viruses, 11 cards for the DNA viruses, 9 cards for the fungi, 9 cards for protozoa, and 11 cards for helminths. The set also contains a card with a spread sheet on the the Hepatitis Virus and a card on HIV and AIDS listing clinical info and opportunistic infections. Each microbe card contains the following information: Clinical Presentation, Pathobiology, Diagnosis, Treatment, Quick Facts, and a Clinical Case Study (thats 122 medical case studies in all, better than most books on the market). The set is 140 cards total. The cards are printed on top quality heavy card stock. These cards are perfect for anyone in the Allied Health Field, Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, and for anyone interested in Infectious Disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best physiology review for step 1
This is the best book for USMLE step 1. It has a very managable size. You can read it quickly. This book explains important subjects very clearly. Its format is very suitable for boards review. After reading this book, you can easily answer most USMLE physiology questions. Review tests at the end of each chapter are very useful for finding your weakness in a subject. I wish there was more books like this one on each subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have resource for all medical students!
This book is an excellent resource for persons both entering their first year course in Medical Physiology and for those second-year medical students preparing for USMLE Step 1. A concise, yet detailed text which emphasizes quite clearly the basic principles of Physiology. I am lucky to have had the author, Dr. Costanzo, as a professor and my current advisor. However, having her review text is the next big thing! Detailed pictures and powerful tables and diagrams handsomely supplement her student-oriented presentation style of information. A particularly well written section concerning Renal Acid-Base Physiology, which is Dr. Costanzo's specialty. Any medical student or person taking a Physiology course will not lose a dime by purchasing this book... It is well worth it, believe me! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have
This book is very useful for classroom study and for the Boards. This is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love all the BRS series
This is right in line with the great product they make. Great book for the shelf exam

4-0 out of 5 stars THE CONCISE PHYSIOLOGY CRACKER
The only complaint that I have heard from the students who read this book is that it is not very detailed. But that is no offence. There was no omission. The fact is that, (like all other authors involved in 'Board Review Series'), the author of this book designed a concise but versatile physiology handbook. A summary! A cracker of a summary!!
This text is outstanding for its revisional value. It simplified every aspect of general physiology, (including pathophysiology). From systems to organs, and down to tissues, the well-edited sections of this book are very easy to comprehend. Its illustrations were nicely done. This book handled Human Physiology in a way that most students would appreciate. It is an asset! ... Read more

Although I found this to be somewhat usefull I thought that many of the questions were not appropriate for a generalist while preparing for the board exam. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Anatomy review
This book is great for a review for first year exams as well as for boards - I highly recommend

3-0 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad
This book had so many rave reviews that I had to buy it. However it appears to be US centric and geared towards the USMLE not gross anatomy. It is incredibly brief and does not contain the depth of anatomical detail that is needed to pass British or Australian medical school exams. Aside from the lack of sufficient detail the diagrams are just average. There are a number of other textbooks that are better, for a book of approximate size I recommend Last's Anatomy, which is exceptional. In my opinion this is not a bad text, but it's not that great either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great review, needs pictures
Great review for the USMLE Step 1. Good price. I think it could use more pictures. Good organization and with useful details. If you are going to get this book you should get an Atlas (Netter is the best). A good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the boards
I found this book to be a must buy for the USMLE Step 1. It helped me focus in on key aspects of the material. The book helped me remember facts easier and with less stress. However, I also used the following book which is also on amazon.com:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
by Patrick Leonardi (ISBN: 0971999600)
The second book helped me to be ready for some of the type of questions encountered on the USMLE Step 1. I was recommended this book from a friend and he was right on target with the Spinal Anatomy Study Guide. Get both books, worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you cant stand looking at an informative picture, buy it!
This book is cerainly a disgrace for BRS in general. Unlike the beautiful Biochemistry and Physiology BRS, this Anatomy book is really a disaster at least reputation wise for the BRS. Yu don't believe me, just buy it and you will NOT want to study from it. The most crucial thing in Anatomy is a good diagram, but there are few diagrams and they are horrible anyways! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars COTA Exam Review Book
This book was a worthy investment. Before having purchased this book I was unsure of how well I would perform on the COTA certification exam. What I liked most about the book was how each answer was provided w/an explanation of why the correct answer was correct and why the other answers were incorrect. The five practice tests really helped me to narrow down my weak areas. I feel this is a superb study guide and would highly recommend this review!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best COTA review guide ever!!
In my opinion, this is an excellent review guide. I purchased it my last quarter as a student and I am so glad I did. Nothing could have prepared me more than this book. I took all 5 practice tests and was amazed by the results. Not only does the book give the partcipant the correct answers but it also gives you the reason why the answer is true and why the other choices are incorrect. If that is not enough, it gives you the references in which you can find that information and/or additional information on that topic. This review guide was a quick and easy way to find out what areas I needed more help with and where I could find that information before taking the COTA exam. What a great investment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for your ACLS class!
I am an RN and I recently passed the ACLS course given at my hospital. It was a two day course that was more of an overview of the information than a teaching session. I work on a floor with very sick patients, but we rarely have a code situation. I wanted to take ACLS in order to feel more comfortable when a code does take place. If I had not done as much preparation before the course as I did, I doubt I would have passed. This book helped me immensely to prepare for the class and understand all the information needed. Deffinately get this book before the classes take place, because there is so much information in the study guide and you don't want to go into information overload. As far as I know, this book contains the most up to date information from the ACLS authorities. Get this book and Dale Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs" for your next ACLS course, especially if it is the first time you're taking it. Good Luck!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry. so so
If you are senior resident or higher in emergency medicine or internal medicine, this books seems to be too superficial for you. And most importantly it didn't reflect fully 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG'- milestone in the resuscitation medicine: various opinions, arguement and final consensus on the basic life support, newly changed tachycardia algorithm, management of atrial fibrillation, amiodarone in pulseless VT,VF and so on- in you wanna see more exactly, do 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG' and annals of emergency medicine appendix booklet printed in 2000. all that changed will affect and change text sooner . but on the other hand, this book has nice advantages - easily readable and well-organized, detail explanation of pitfall and pearl in basic life support and good discussion themes and self-test question. Recommend for starter , ACLS instructor (manual) or physician not related with resuscitation field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the AHA book
I am an ACLS and ACLS-EP instructor and highly recommend this book. Much more details than the AHA textbook, has an index, and is well written. Actually has a picture of WPW arrythmias, discusses Cardiac Glycosides as well as other things that an effective clinician needs to know. Honestly, if the AHA would let us, I would use this as the text instead of the official one. Unlike the official text this one is clear, has EKG's, and is helpful. If you are teaching ACLS this text is a MUST. If you are taking, this text is extremely helpful. If you have this, and read this, you will do much better than the rest of the class when it is time to test.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would give it a 7. (The AHA textbook is a 2)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplement to the AHA ACLS provider manual
I bought this book because the AHA book just didn't have enough info for me. This book is very easy to read and gives tons of information which really helps put the total ACLS picture together. If you plan on taking ACLS or just want to know more about the hear this is a great book to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent ACLS resource
I'm a SICU nurse and I highly recommend Ms. Aehlert's book. It is by far the best book you will find on the market that will get you ready for ACLS. It's much better than the AHA course book for ACLS. This is an excellent resource and has now become an indispensable part of my reference library. I'm not a novice; I just completed my 4th ACLS class with excellent results, thanks to this book. Buy it before you take ACLS and you will not be disappointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than others
Unfortunately, there is a dearth of "cardiology-review books", especially when it comes to ABIM Cardiology Boards preparation. There is NOT a single review book written keeping in mind that it has be used ONLY for ABIM cardiology boards. This book at least tries to achieve this goal, but does a mediocre job. It has many expert academicians as its authors; agreed; but it did not achieve its primary goal. Do you any better choices, unfortunately NOT.

The primary goal of a review book is to remain focused, cut the extra fat and present to it readers "only the needed facts". In medical academia, there are three levels of books, in my humble opinion. FIRST, the standard texts, which are written primarily for the thorough discussion of the disease and serve as reference books, in cardiology its example will be Hurst's textbook. SECOND, the review books, which are primarily written to pass the exams and it assumes that the reader has the basic understanding of the subject. THIRD, the in-between books which claim to be review books but goes beyond the "call of duty" and starts explaining pathophysiology and unrelated material which is extremely redundant approach for a review book.

Mayo Clinic Cardiology Review 2nd Ed belongs to third category. But then why it is popular and why I am reading it, moreover why I am writing such an extensive review? Because, we don't have any decent book for second category, so this is the logical choice till someone writes a better review-book (a real review book, not 1381 paged book). I hope that while writing the third edition Joseph G. Murphy MD keeps in mind that this is a "REVIEW BOOK" not a "TEXTBOOK"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook for Membership Examinations
This book really blew me away. It is the best cardiology book I have read. All the major trials are summarized. The multiple choice questions are great. This book covers all the cardiology you will need to know for membership exams. It is a pity there is not an English cardiology textbook as good as this. Congratulations to the authors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars LESS IS MORE
If you ever study for the USMLE and you want to have a single book to give you the confidence that you are covering the basics, pick this one. I recommend it as a starter. There are many tables and high-yield diagrams. If you want to have the "synoptic" and "big picture" companion to the selected high yield topics in First Aid to the USMLE, then do pick this one. Big printed text and relaxed style makes reading a breeze. A confidence builder. Admittedly, not exhaustive but remember the maxim: Less is more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cracking the boards...
This is a great book to review material, as it explains concepts so well. It also covers strictly all the clinical points of the basic sciences, and not facts that are really not needed. You must learn to use it with your coursework, however, as it is a bit deficient. I am using it side by side with my first aid, and a couple other review books. It's framework, however, makes studying for the boards a lot easier to mentally grasp, as the systems and the most high yield concepts are already there for you. It's length is almost perfect, as you have already covered so much material in your courses. This gives you quite a bit of time to do as many questions for the boards as possible. I would definitely recommend this book as a starter for USMLE study. For the next edition, I recommend making the book atleast 1200 to 1500 pages, to make up for the deficiencies, and so no other review books are needed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of Mistakes
This book is absolutely full of mistakes, I would not rely on it at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars good for a comprehensive review
not as thorough as a textbook, but has just what's needed to pass the boards. (i did!) would use with standard textbooks for reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cracking the Boards USMLE Step 1
I found this book extremely frustrating to use. I found an average 1 mistake per page, causing me to question every word written. As examples, according to this book, Vitamin D is 25 hydroxylated in the kidney (should be liver), alzheimer's has equal prevalence in males and females (F=2M), classical C5 convertase is C4b2b3b (should be C4b2a3b), Myesthenia Gravis is a result of desensitization block of Ach receptors by autoreactive antibodies (antibodies do not act at the ligand binding site, but serve to cross link receptors --> increased internalization), and this is just to name a few.
I recommend choosing another book for your studies. ... Read more
