5-0 out of 5 stars The Best so Far!
As a future EMT-B student I wanted to buy some books prior to my course beginning. I bought Mosby's, Aehlert's, and Brady's books. I finally got to this one (being the last I was to read), and have to say this is the best Ive seen so far. With clear concise text, and abundance of knowledge, real life situations, and amazing pictures (which Aehlert's has almost none of), I must say that this book is not only the most informative, but is also the most user friendly. It has a great index, glossary, and the anatomy pictures are cut outs of REAL humans. I mean it just doesn't get any better than this. I just found out a few days ago this is the book my instructor is going to use, and for a good reason!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent book, but a little confusing in parts.
I am an EMT-B instructor in West Virginia and have used this edition to teach my classes. I have found it to be a great improvement over previous editions. The text is easy to read, comprehensive and all-in-all an excellent text on EMT-B. My only gripe with the book is that it makes prehospital patient assessment somewhat confusing for new students. The book breaks patient assessment up into several chapters, giving the reader the impression that assessment is both difficult and complicated. This lack of single-chapter continuity coupled with the trepidation many new students bring to this module creates the impression that patient assessment is a disjointed, randomized activity. I have to tell my students that for patient assessment, these chapters are a good reference, but that I will tell them just how easy assessment is; TAKE NOTES!

If Brady would spend a little more time examining this module, I feel as though they can make it a little less imposing and a little more readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workbook
I used this workbook in conjuction with the Emergency Care Book, to prepare for the state registry EMT-B test, and the NREMT-B test. This is a MUST have if you are using the Emergency Care Book. Questions are nearly identical in wording and phrasing to the NREMT-B exam, and the inclusion of practice homework problems add even more preparation oppertunities. DO NOT BUY THE EMERGENCY CARE BOOK, WITHOUT THIS WORKBOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, VERY good...
I am a current EMT-B student and currently use this book as text. The book is indeed easy to read, and has a lot of features to help a student prepare for that dreadful exam. I reccomend buying the workbook as well, to really solidify the knowledge gained by reading. In my class the tests are easy in comparison to the questions in the workbook, this is why I recommend buying the workbook. Also, using all of the features incorporated in this book will, with out any doubt, prepare you for the test. The assessment chapters are mangled as the instructor's review says, but there is a great graphic in the front of the book and being how assessment is SO VITAL, one should visualize it on their own and practice till its like tieing a shoe. All in all a quality well thought out book, with tons of features.

5-0 out of 5 stars You think they are all the same....
But they aren't. This was my required reading. I doubled up and purchased two others just in case. I found that I liked this one the best and just wasted my money on the other two. This book is very well organized and since all of the content to review for the NREMT is the same, that's what it is all about.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 2,000+ Pages In Search of an Editor
This book contains an appalling numbers of errors, inconsistencies, contradictions, typos, and other editorial oversights. The errors run the gamut: medication dosage errors, math errors, photos and graphics that do not math the description, spelling errors, misinterpretation of statistics, and more. This book may not kill any patients, but it will likely result in many students having to re-take their paramedic certification exams. You will do well to select another text whose authors and editor took the time to check their work.

1-0 out of 5 stars was there even an editor for this book?
This book is FULL of errors, it contridicts itself constantly, and over some very important issues. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is serious about this field. A basic word processor would have caught more errors than the editor did. I feel that if I would have used this book alone (without purchasing additional books from another source) that I would definatly NOT be prepaired to sit for National Registry.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Compendium of Errors
This is NOT a text book, it is an anthology of related articles by different authors. The editor did a very poor job. The text is filled with substantive errors from the trivial to life threatening. Learning is a challenge because the authors of the various chapters (not surprisingly) have varying views but the editor did nothing to highlight, harmonize or in any way deal with this. The result, one chapter says "A" is the primary/most important whatever, while two chapters later someone else says that "B" is the primary/most important whatever, and four chapters later another author says that "C" is the primary/most important whatever. One example: "flail segment" is defined in three mutually inconsistent ways. Spelling errors abound, like "plural" for "pleural." Several authors appear to have little familiarity with prehospital care since they discuss the importance of tests (e.g., ABG) not available in the field. If you read the book and learn what it says without understanding the concepts, you will probably do well on the Brady-provided tests, which are pulled from the text by someone who had no clue about the subject matter; if you understand the concepts, you will find that the questions often have more than one equally valid answer. Avoid this disaster at all costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paramedic Bible!
I'm one week away from my paramedic exam. This book has been my bible. It covers every aspect of paramedic care from just about every angle. It flows well and is not drab or dry like other text books. It's a huge book (2,000 pages), but there are 48 chapters. The chapters are easy to read and to draw information from. Each chapter contains objectives with page references, quick review content highlites on the edges of each page along with key terms and points. It has never been so easy to find definitions, referances and main content substance from a textbook.
It has beautiful illustrations, pictures from real medic calls and step-by-step diagramed charts with photographs demonstrating the procedures.
My favorite part of this text is the matching web site where you can take an on-line quiz for each chapter. This has been a great study tool.
The book is big, heavy and rather difficult to carry around, but it's basically the "World Book Encyclopedia of Paramedicine" wrapped up into one big book. A bit pricy, but worth the cost. Highly recommended. I wouldn't trade mine for the world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This book was required for my pharmacology class for paramedicine. It's an excellent text book, but watch for several misprints on drug dosages, (ex: milligrams instead of micrograms on drips). It made me pretty confused when the book indicated my calculations were incorrect when I knew I had the correct dose. I brought it to the attention of my teacher (retired medic) and he confirmed the misprints. Besides that, and excellent text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This is not a how to guide so this is not for beginners. This is more for a person who already has a foundation in fluid replacement. This is the stuff paramedics need to be reading after they've already has basic training in pharmacology. The book is a little too bulky to be carried around, unless you've got a place to store it on an engine or ambulance.

This book presents a detailed description of prehospital drugs, their class, mechanism of action, indications for use, contradictions, precautions, side effects, interactions, dosage, and how they are to be given. It is very extensive. The information in the book is what medication administering paramedics need to know. What the medications do and how they act is so vital to understand in the field, too important for one to be ignorant of them. This book has a hard back, so it will last until the book becomes outdated. There are 85 different drugs in this textbook. This nis the most practical reference textbook about prehospital pharmacology that I've come across. pediatric considerations and home medications are givena attention too. There are also some basic practical medication administration questions.

It would be a great compliment to a paramedic textbook(s) or paramedic course. As well as a handy reference book for the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prehospital Emergency Pharmacology review
An absolute for the serious paramedic and students alike. This book provides detailed information on pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, with the paramedic in mind. The book utilizies a systematic approach starting with the fundamentals and advances to more complex pharmacological topics. Recently revised, Prehospital Emergency Pharmacology, includes new emergency drug updates, AHA algorithms, home meds and more. To be an outstanding prehospital practicioner, an intimate knowledge of pharmacology is a necessity. To maintain that knowledge base, Dr. Bledsoe's book is a must. ... Read more

Thoroughly updated and extensively illustrated, the revised reprint of Mosby's Paramedic Textbook, 2nd Edition provides complete coverage of prehospital care in a single, comprehensive text. Its table of contents parallels the new United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) paramedic national standard curriculum, giving readers all the resources they need to pass local, state, and national examinations. 3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, easy to understand, but...
Greetings,

I'm 3 months into a paramedic program and we just happened to be talking about this book today (one of our texts) in class. Where this book is most helpful is regarding the instruction of hands on skills such as IV's and Intubation, as well as a good general reference book to find specific basic info fast. Our class has augmented this text with Applegates A+P, Lipencotts basic pharmocology, and will be using a yet to be decided patho text. If you used only this text I feel you'd be missing out on a great deal of background information, that for me, makes the concepts of paramedicine easier to grasp. I would also check with your instructor regarding the workbook, I don't know anyone who has bothered to use it. If anyone is looking for an overview on the scope of paramedicine, to brush up for an exam, this is probably a perfect book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A limited referrence and course study for the EMT-P prog.
Most people buying this book will not have a choice in which book they choose. I will say that this book is adequate for taking the National Registry. However, I would recommend a practice exam so that you can see where you need to brush up. There is a lot of information presented in this book without extensive description. I find that understanding the physiology of an organ helps in absorbing the information. The Mosby book does NOT go into the detail that I had anticipated in this monster of a book. They will go into great depth on certain topics, while leaving you wondering about others. I ended up buying a Anatomy and Physiology book just to fill in the gaps of this book. All in all, for the purpose of schooling, the book is almost adequate, but if you are the type of person that really wants a thorough understanding, you may be dissapointed. Good Luck

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poor Textbook
I am currently a Paramedic student about half way through the class and I along with several of my classmates find this book to be very poor. The book will discuss a topic and refer to a diagram or example that will be nowhere near where you are currently. This book is very hard to follow and not at all user friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The must have Paramedic Book!
This is the book of the future for all paramedic courses it is only the begining of a more indepth thoroughly trained paramedic. If you buy and study dilligentlyfrom this book you will pass both state and national registry with no problem!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive look at prehospital emergency care
This is one of the best prehospital care books I own. This book is 1600 pages of quality information. As well as emergency care there is a lot of extra information that may not be crucial to your actions but will help give you a thorough understanding of why you're doing what you're doing. We all know that you put a bandage of a cut but do we all know, in detail, how the wound heals? This book will tell you hundreds of things like that.

Mosby's Paramedic Textbook should be in the library of every paramedic or paramedic student. However if you do not have a thorough understanding of EMT-B information, leave this book alone because it will become an expensive dust collector if you don't.

The workbook is a valuable resource. A medical dictionary would be a handy resource as well. ... Read more

This book presents the various arrythmias in a very good format. From atrial to junctional rhythms, her explanations and diagrams are very helpful and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for new medics
New medics in particular should grab up this book. I eagerly await a second edition but I have found no other book that cuts to the chase and explains differential diagnosis of about 40 common EMS conditions as well. I strongly encourage new EMS folks to buy this book as the wealth of information that is in here is amazing. While some of the information is old -- I don't think it has been updated since the ACLS changes of 2000, it still has a great deal of good information throughout and should be added to required text lists of NREMT-P and NREMT-I programs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Streetmedic's Handbook.
Well, I have to say...I'm duly impressed. It's not often that I find a medical reference book that is as clear, concise, and step-by-step as this one. Even though it's geared towards the EMT-P, it could be a very helpful guide to anyone in health-related fields...from trauma nurse to home health aide to first responder. Although the book does assume you have the basic knowledge of the advance EMT, it can contain valuable insight for all. It's also well organized; it's easy to look something up and find your information in a short time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great For All EMS personnel
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, used it in conjunction with my paramedic classes, keep it with me while on duty, and find it a great refresher. The format is simple and straight forward and written as you might encounter an incident. I had the good fortune to meet Dr. Traynor and several of the reviewers noted in the book. Dr. Traynor also taught the patient assesment segment of my EMTP class and some other reviewers also taught in our medic class. I recommend this book to everyone in EMS and am waiting for the second edition!! Thank you Dr. Traynor, et al

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This book is so cool, I've bought it twice (to replace one that was stolen). This book is clear, easy-to-read, and concise in a way that allows you to review a chapter on the way to the call. The first chapter on abdominal pain will show you the value of such a text. And it's small size makes it easy to carry, and the cover's tough, too. All considered, a damn fine book for EMS

Book Description

This book explores the new and rapidly developing area of tactical EMS, a special blend of prehospital care and military-style tactical operations encompassing field and wilderness medicine under austere and often hostile conditions. This is the first commercial book to focus on military medicine at the EMT/military medic level.Focusing on the unique prehospital problems facing tactical EMT's, the book covers wounds from conventional weapons as well as nuclear biologic, and chemical weapons.Medical evacuation, environmental medicine and triage as well as ambulatory care and topics unique to EMT's providing law enforcement medical support are also addressed. 3-0 out of 5 stars uneven quality
tho re-issued in 1999 (with corrections), this book is not very well edited. For example, the index is often off by a couple of pages, figures are miss-captioned, & I'd love to be there when the unsuspecting reader applies eucalyptus oil instead of eugenol to your toothache. No doubt a fine text in a classroom situation with a good instructor, but on its own merits, leaves much to be desired. A bit out-of-scope for entry-level EMS personnel wishing to 'expand their knowledge', but the chapter on ambulatory care, for example, is hoplessly 'in-scope' compared to books like 'ditch medicine', 'special forces medical handbook', 'barefoot doctor's manual' or 'where there is no doctor'. And $... ???? Textbook price reminds me of college.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tactical Operational Medicine
Dr. De Lorenzo and Mr. Porter have written a very readable product on operational medicine. This is an area of medical practice that begs for more documentation, and this text is a good start. Although the information contained in the text leans heavily to the military operational side, there is a great deal of information useful to civilian Tactical services. Some of the opinions are a little controversial, but the authors take a stand and attempt to justify their opinions. Topic areas such as laser and microwave injuries are not available in other sources. The approach taken by these authors is very practical and useful from a clinical point of view. This book is a valuable addition to any emergency physician or paramedics library. I hope to see further editions with improvements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tactical EMS
This book is a blend of military medicine, tactical (as in law-enforcement/SWAT) EMS and state-of-the-art prehospital care. It achieves its stated goals of bringing the best of all these worlds to the medics in the trenches. Advanced techniques such as intubation and transport medicine are well-covered, while basic techniques such as manual carries are not overlooked. Particularly helpful are the sections on NBC/WMD, medication use and preparing patients for long transport.

Highly recommended for any emergency care provider desiring an in-depth look at tactical care.

3-0 out of 5 stars Military medicine, not paramedicine
Considering the time that we are in, in this world, this book should be read by every medical provider. The Nuclear, Biological & Chemical sections are covered fairly well. Those are the only sections that present anything new. Various skills are shown but any medic worth their salt already knows how to start and IV and provide advanced airway management.

If you have recieved Haz Mat training, there may not be too much useful info in here for you. If you have recieved no specialized training like firefighter, haz mat, tactical etc this book would be very useful for you. This book covers, in great detail, NBC situations.

I got thrown off by the word "tactical" in the title. When paramedics see that word they think of working with a SWAT team or other police units. This book provides very little help to somebody working with police. This book is designed for military personnel, and does very little to help those of us in the civilian emergency medical field.

Most of what's in this book can be found in any paramedic textbook. It was a good look into how the military does things. I learned very little medical information from this book. All I learned is how the military does things. And especially, from what I know, most military NBC emergency procedures are classified, it hurts the information presented in this book.

The book did me very little good and served me next to nothing, but was a good read because I learned a few things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Combat Casualty Care
Excellent textbook. Up-to-date, succinct and accurate, particularly for the military operator. Has value for civilian tactical medics, too. Techniques are current and reflect the authoritative refrences that are included at the end of each chapter. Strengths include the chapters on nuclear, biological and chemical casualties. The main weakness is the focus on military medics (this is the intent of book, according to the Forward and jacket). A must buy for anyone in the business! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive look at Basic Paramedical Emergencies
This book is significantly larger than other paramedic textbooks. It is probably the most comprehensive and detailed introductory text on the market. This isn't as detailed as AMLS but is a beginners guide of medical emergencies. There is 700p in this book, compared to roughly 500p, at most, in other books.

The chapters: 1)Pulmonary 2)Cardiology 3)Neurology 4)Endocrinology 5)Allergies and Anaphylaxis 6)Gastroenterology 7)Urology and Nephrology 8)Toxicology and Substance Abuse 9)Hematology 10)Environmental Emergencies 11)Infectious Disease 12)Psychiatric and Behavioral Disorders 13)Gynecology 14)Obstetrics

The cardiology chapter is probably the best in any paramedic text but it may still help to get other books like Dale Dubin's as a supplemental guide. Toxicology was covered pretty well too. Behavioral emergencies could have been done a little more extensively though. All in all this is a great book and a would make a valuable part of basic paramedic training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Above Average Patient Assessment Text
Though this book is put together in a rather odd format it is still a very good text from which the student can gain a lot of valuable knowledge. The paramedic care series, of which this is volume 2, has no formal anatomy and physiology sections. This book combines anatomy and physiology with the patient assessment section. Patient assessment is usually straight forward and not that difficult to learn but since this book combines it with anatomy it makes for a learning challenge.

The books chapters: 1)History 2)Physical Exam Techniques 3)Patient assessment in the field 4)Clinical Decision making 5)Communications 6)Documentation

Most paramedic texts have less than 100 pg for what this book spends almost 300p on. Anatomy and physiology are included in this text but that doesn't replace the need for a text dedicated exclusively to the topic. This text presents as basic into to A&P but nothing more. It does do a fantastic job at presenting what patient assessment is all about. There are a few things that were left out and a few "trades of the trick" that would have been useful if included.

What kind of annoys me about the communication chapter is that they leave out so much. The phoenetic alphabet, basic radio communication procedures, tactical communications, numbering systems, appropriate procedures and other basic things like that are nowhere to be found. I understand the importance of knowing how radio systems function but the operators really need to have a basic understanding of radio procedures without having to purchase another book. Paramedics do so much communicating over radios and phones that they should have that info included in these basic training texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Advanced Paramedic Care at its Best
This text is by far the single best introduction to advanced prehospital care available on the market today. Brady has elected to have a 5 volume series for paramedic education. Breaking up the various areas of emergency medicine has allowed much more specific information to be included into the volumes.

This first volume is 640 pages including glossary. The chapter titles are: 1)Intro to Advanced Care 2)Well Being of Paramedics 3) EMS Systems 4)Roles and Responsibilities 5)Illness and Injury Prevention 6)Medical and legal aspects 7)Ethics 8)GeneralPathophysiology 9)General Pharmacology 10)Medication Administration 11)Theraputic Communications 12)Life Span Development 13)Airway Management Appx)Research in EMS

Most other paramedic texts have just over 300 pages dedicated to the topics that this book has 640p for. All the sections are significantly larger than any other paramedic text. There is more detailed information and instructions for specific procedures, making self instruction much easier. I highly recommend this book to paramedic students. If your paramedic class has another book as its primary text I think you'd still get great use from this book. If you are a firefighter. first responder, etc and looking to go to the next level this may be the book for you. These new texts from Brady would also make fine additions to a library as a resource tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have
An excellent companion to the previous volumes. Detailed illustrations and wonderful content make this a must have for all pre-hospital care providers. I love it and give it 5 stars..Brady does it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for advanced prehospital care providers!
Although DeGowin & DeGowin is the gold standard of physical examination texts, Bledsoe provides the paramedic student with an excellent background in patient assessment. Most one-volume paramedic texts are somewhat skimpy when it comes to the topic of physical examination techniques. This book is an excellent supplement. It also makes lesson planning easy since it follows the National Curriculum nearly to the letter. I currently use it as a resource for lecture material on the relevant topics for the paramedic and CE courses I teach. There is an incredibly thorough section on physical examination techniques, broken down by body system. It is quite in-depth, even covering ophthalmoscopic, otoscopic, ROM, and advanced neurological exams. Even though the aforementioned techniques are infrequently used in the field, it provides an excellent springboard for paramedics that work in the Emergency Department, as well as those that may wish to pursue the up-and-coming "paramedic practitioner" program that is now on the drawing board at the national level. After presenting physical exam techniques, they are brought together into complete assessments, with rationales presented for each component. This book also includes the standard communication and documentation sections. This book comes highly recommended, as well as volume one of this series. If volumes 3, 4 and 5 continue the tradition, the textbooks will most likely become the premier advanced prehospital education series. ... Read more
