4-0 out of 5 stars The lesser of the evils out there.
I prefer this book over Pass the CCRN! because the layout is easier to read, whereas Pass the CCRN! is laid out in outline form and makes me feel like I'm just memorizing a bunch of facts. Also in this book, there are some good practice exams that are, from what other previous CCRN test-takers have told me, very similar in style and difficulty to the actual CCRN.

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs a more simplistic approach
This is one of the few books available for CCRN certification. Practice exams cover too much material and may overwhelm you. The book should cover what you need to know instead of adding extra material that is not likely to be on the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for Critical care and for review purposes
Each chapter is carefully and thoughtfully layed out. They also build on each other until the whole picture is before you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for your ACLS class!
I am an RN and I recently passed the ACLS course given at my hospital. It was a two day course that was more of an overview of the information than a teaching session. I work on a floor with very sick patients, but we rarely have a code situation. I wanted to take ACLS in order to feel more comfortable when a code does take place. If I had not done as much preparation before the course as I did, I doubt I would have passed. This book helped me immensely to prepare for the class and understand all the information needed. Deffinately get this book before the classes take place, because there is so much information in the study guide and you don't want to go into information overload. As far as I know, this book contains the most up to date information from the ACLS authorities. Get this book and Dale Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs" for your next ACLS course, especially if it is the first time you're taking it. Good Luck!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry. so so
If you are senior resident or higher in emergency medicine or internal medicine, this books seems to be too superficial for you. And most importantly it didn't reflect fully 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG'- milestone in the resuscitation medicine: various opinions, arguement and final consensus on the basic life support, newly changed tachycardia algorithm, management of atrial fibrillation, amiodarone in pulseless VT,VF and so on- in you wanna see more exactly, do 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG' and annals of emergency medicine appendix booklet printed in 2000. all that changed will affect and change text sooner . but on the other hand, this book has nice advantages - easily readable and well-organized, detail explanation of pitfall and pearl in basic life support and good discussion themes and self-test question. Recommend for starter , ACLS instructor (manual) or physician not related with resuscitation field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the AHA book
I am an ACLS and ACLS-EP instructor and highly recommend this book. Much more details than the AHA textbook, has an index, and is well written. Actually has a picture of WPW arrythmias, discusses Cardiac Glycosides as well as other things that an effective clinician needs to know. Honestly, if the AHA would let us, I would use this as the text instead of the official one. Unlike the official text this one is clear, has EKG's, and is helpful. If you are teaching ACLS this text is a MUST. If you are taking, this text is extremely helpful. If you have this, and read this, you will do much better than the rest of the class when it is time to test.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would give it a 7. (The AHA textbook is a 2)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplement to the AHA ACLS provider manual
I bought this book because the AHA book just didn't have enough info for me. This book is very easy to read and gives tons of information which really helps put the total ACLS picture together. If you plan on taking ACLS or just want to know more about the hear this is a great book to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent ACLS resource
I'm a SICU nurse and I highly recommend Ms. Aehlert's book. It is by far the best book you will find on the market that will get you ready for ACLS. It's much better than the AHA course book for ACLS. This is an excellent resource and has now become an indispensable part of my reference library. I'm not a novice; I just completed my 4th ACLS class with excellent results, thanks to this book. Buy it before you take ACLS and you will not be disappointed. ... Read more

This book presents the various arrythmias in a very good format. From atrial to junctional rhythms, her explanations and diagrams are very helpful and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship
This is a concise book, perfect for MSIIIs starting their IM Clerkship; it is also great for Step 2 review and the Medicine Shelf. MSIIIs can use this as an IM starting point and fill in the details concerning their own patients using Harrison's, Up to Date, or Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but not by itself
First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book that gives you the key facts about many diseases. This is information that will help you answer questions during rounds and on exams. It's very well done, with nice illustrations. It's easy to get through, which is important since there's so much to learn during the Internal Medicine rotation (and not enough time!). I also recommend:

    1) Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient by Ferri because you need something to help you take care of patients. First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship isn't great for managing patients or working them up

    2) Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia because you need something for drug information (if you have epocrates, then you don't necessarily need this). First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship doesn't have much about drugs. Another plus is it's fairly cheap.

    3) Internal Medicine Clerkship: 150 Biggest Mistakes because you need something that gives you the nuts and bolts of the rotation. This book tells you how to preround, give great oral case presentations, prepare complete write-ups, and impress during attending rounds. A lot of tips on how to get great evaluations. Not much of this is is in First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship.

    4) Access to uptodate or some other medicine reference to help you work up patients.

    5) Pretest book - you need to do questions before the shelf exam.

Bottom line is First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book but you need other things to help you do well during the rotation. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine clerkship
The best book I have used in medical so far. Questions I was pimped on during rounds, issues relevent to patient management, weird physical exam findings, strange syndromes (Felty's anyone?)were all covered in this book. I pretty much memorized the whole book, and all my attendings and residents during my medicine clerkship commented that my fund of knowledge was excellent. Everyone gave me honors, and it was literally all because of this book. Probably not adequate enough for the NBME shelf exam however, but combine it with some old kaplan step 2 questions and honoring that should be no sweat either. GET THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Maybe only book you need for this clerkship.
Great book. It's like a potent offering of what you need to know for your Medicine clerkship. It is highly distilled, has quick easy-to-read facts/pearls, and leaves out the crud. I lost mine but I am constantly wanting to go back and review it. I may just buy it again, even though I am done with my Medicine rotation and I am pursuing Surgery as a career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!
This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always helpfull

    Book Description

Emergency surgery is a battleground for the surgeon - a source of skills, experience, character building, and glory. The tired and overworked resident needs to know how the experienced surgeon "does it", to grasp a few recipes and take home a message or two. This simple and humorous book consists of informal uncensored chats between experienced surgeons and their trainees. The preferred clinical approach for a given patient is discussed against the background of several possible alternatives. The preferred pathway must fulfill certain prerequisites: save lives, decrease morbidity, be cost-effective, and be performed correctly. Short chapters with three main sections: preoperative phase, the operation, postoperative phase. Common pitfalls are discussed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
I enjoyed this book so much that I decided to translate it to Spanish(Editorial Mediterraneo,360 pags.,Santiago,2001). I wish to quote from the recent book review in the World Journal of Surgery (January 2002).

"Since Henry Mondor's text in the 1940s there has been no another book written with such ease and wit about emergency abdominal surgery, an attractive battlefield for so many surgical recruits. Dr. Moshe Schein, a general surgeon with broad experience in New York, has presented a compact handbook useful even in the smallest rural hospital. The book is divided into three sections: Before the Operation, The Operation, After the Operation. This partitioning allows convenient access to pertinent information about the diagnostic and operative hitches frequently encountered in daily practice. In its turn each section of the book is divided into chapters devoted to acute abdominal diseases as well known as perforated peptic ulcer and as rare as Curtis-Fitz-Hugh syndrome. In spite of its semi-belletristic style, the monograph addresses each question with competence; even such a complicated subject as the pathophysiology of urgent surgical situations is very clear and understandable. The features of operative techniques for the different emergency surgical procedures and the management of the postoperative period are thoroughly elucidated.

I was unable to tear myself away from Moshe Schein's book, and I have learned much from it, in spite of my surgical maturity. This manual deserves to be readily available in every emergency service and operating room. Undoubtedly it will come to be highly useful for surgeons at every level, and not only for surgical "teenagers."

I complete my review with one of the aphorisms from the book: "It is more difficult to decide when not to operate than when to operate and what operation to perform." This sentence reflects exactly the substance of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Home Medical Guide-American College of Physicians
This home medical guide is a complete rendition which
names diseases, disease processes, diagnostic approaches
and treatment options for practically every conceivable
ailment. The volume is easy to read and it is devoid
of too much medical jargon. There are many pictures depicting
the human anatomy, or portions thereof, in full color.
The approaches to describing the various disease processes
are modern. In addition, the work distinguishes between related
diseases and conditions. A beauty of the work is that it
describes how patients function given the most debilitating
    medical conditions presented. For instance,
ankylosing spondylitis causes permanent disability in 1 in 20
patients wherein they lose the ability to do routine
tasks/functions. Basic medical terms are defined exhaustively.
The book is a worthy purchase as a desk reference for
a wide constituency of medical providers and the general
public. This is a worthy addition to your existing medicinal health library. It contains brand new protocols. As such,
I recommend purchasing this volume because it will help you
to formulate the various disease processes encountered into
precise medical language and diagnostic terminology.
Clearly, the volume has been researched thoroughly and it is
ready for general public use. Another feature of the work is
that the authors describe comparative costs for complex
surgeries so that consumers have a basis to compare prices. ... Read more
