Great Book

Good for beginning ER nurses
This book had good content, but for someone studying for the CEN exam, it is way too basic. This is an easy to use book and I liked the format, with the answers on the back of the page of questions.

The computer program that came with the book was fun to use and reduced my anxiety about taking the CEN on a computer, but again the questions were too easy.

Most accurate book resembling the CEN Exam
I found this book to be the most useful book in the market today for reviewing for the new CEN computerized exam. The questions were very similar to the ones included in the exam and the layout of the material, i.e. questions on one page and the answers with rationale on the flip side of the page made it extremely user-friendly. This book is valuable especially for those nurses fearful of computer tests in that a sample test of 250 questions is included on the CD-ROM enclosed with the book. This allows the computer-shy nurse an opportunity to simulate taking the test in a computer setting. I have tossed out all my other numerous review books from over the 12 years and will only keep this book in my review library.

A must-have for all ED nurses
Finally an RN Triage guide book plus. This book was written by somebody who has been there and done that.

I recommend this book for nurses who plan to go through the ED experience. This book will guide them through the difficult and trying times.

The "Pearls of Wisdom" Chapter is a definite treasure trove of experience that each RN can relate to.

To top it all, the book size fits a lab coat pocket so one can carry it all of the time or store it in a locker for that essential quick-glance.

This book should be on the reading list of every nurse!
This is definitely a MUST READ AND KEEP HANDY reference/guide to facilitating an effective and appropriate triage process in any setting, with any patient. Written primarily for the urgent/emergency care nurse, this book is easy to navigate and will be a valuable resource in every ER, outpatient clinic, physicians office, school health center and medical library. I can see it reaching the very top of the "required" reading list for ALL front-line health professionals; especially telehealth/telephone triage nurses.

New nurses will love the "pearls of triage wisdom" section. Experienced nurses will be delighted to finally have such a comprehensive listing of cultural considerations. The Post test feature is a great guide for self directed learners, and would also assist nursing managers in the evaluation of staff competency. The inclusion of humor in many of the illustrations created by John F. Aarne, (who happens to be Val's father) makes this publication not only a incredibly useful educational tool but also a nursing treasure.

Someone has finally done it!
Finally, someone has waded through the mass of ambiguity and arrived at a top notch presentation of the triage function. This book is solid and useful, and it will very likely become the benchmark for any others. I love this book
I have purchased this series for peds, med surg and fluids & electrolytes. Without fail other students want these books. Class lecture follows this book nearly verbatim. Thus I can follow along in the book while listening. I don't even need to take seperate notes. Although sometimes I do write notations in the columns when my teacher stresses a particular point. The diskette that comes with the series is the best review that I have found. I am on the Dean's List in part to this series.

In May 1971, Look magazine featured a story entitled "Chicago’s Cook County Hospital: A Terrible Place." The article provided an inside look at the largest public hospital in the country, one located on Chicago’s dangerous gang-controlled and drug-infested west side. Months later, Carol Karels and seventy other nursing students began their nurse’s training there, despite newspaper articles that warned that the hospital might close any day. ‘The County,’ as it was called by the multitudes who sought health care treatment there, has weathered massive layoffs, doctors and nurses strikes, budget slashing, and public relations nightmares. Chicago’s counterpart to the Statue of Liberty, ‘the County’ welcomed the sick, desperate, and destitute multitudes who were turned away elsewhere. Burn victims, abused children, Skid Row drunks with TB, gunshot victims, nursing home rejects, drug overdoses, and those with complex medical conditions all found refuge on County’s massive wards. Metal beds, separated only by green curtains, lined the walls of these wards. Patients shared a common bathroom (at one end of the ward) and TV (at the other end of the ward). The nurse’s station was often a full block away from the last bed. Call lights were unheard of—patients shouted if they needed help.

Within weeks after starting nursing school, Ms. Karels began work on one of the busiest emergency wards in the hospital. Each night she assisted the overworked nurses and doctors by washing the vermin-infested bodies of the homeless, applying leather restraints to those who were confused and violent, shaking those with drug overdoses to keep them alert, translating street English for foreign doctors, and racing around the hospital to find medications and emergency equipment. Most who trained at Cook County Hospital, the hospital on which television’s hit "ER" is loosely based on, describe it as a city unto itself. While the patients were housed on wards, the staff lived and ate right across the street in sexually segregated dormitories--male doctors in one, female nurses in the other. Social life consisted of Friday teas in the nurse’s residence, local frat parties and Saturday night dances in the doctor’s dormitory.

County was also a hotbed of political activity with staff members representing every imaginable political ideology. In the years before Medicare, Medicaid, legalized abortions, and managed healthcare, County’s idealistic nurses and doctors were among the first in the nation to go on strike for better working conditions, and the first to go to jail for their convictions. The struggle for change, complicated by a massive internal bureaucracy, internal corruption, and city politics, is also documented.

"Cooked" chronicles the day-to-day challenges faced by committed caregivers and shows how stress and exhaustion often leads to indifference, callousness, tragic mistakes, and burnout. The memoir also shows how humor on the wards helps both caretakers and patients maintain their sanity. One example was a pre-dawn roller-skating romp in County’s musty tunnels.

The memoir also explores the culture of the Mexican immigrant on Chicago’s near south side. Feeling shut out of the Chicago’s public health care system because of language barriers, the Hispanic community resorted to forming their own community health clinic run by a street gang called ‘the Brown Berets.’ Ms. Karels shares memories of her Wednesday evenings at the clinic, which survived until organized violence took precedence over community healthcare.

COOKED is filled with stories about the compassion, caregiving, dedication, and chaos that took place on County’s huge wards and in the surrounding neighborhoods.
