5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Accessible Textbook
Bruce Anderson has created a wonderful textbook that allows the reader to understand, diagnose, and effectively treat most medical orthopedic problems.

Specific problems are easy to identify, review, and treat. Handy figures and specific patient instructions are a nice complement to the text.

Having worked with Dr. Anderson as a resident, I find this book to be something I never like to have too far from my office.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good orthopedic overview
Office Orthopedics for Primary Care offers a succinct overviewof primary care orthopedic problems. The book is well-written andcovers common orthopedic injuries. The book is somewhat deficient in diagrams and pictures, especially when discussing orthopedic clinical exam tests. Overall, a worthwhile addition to any physician's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evidence-based pocket info
This is an evidence-based pocket wonder. Mark Graber, M.D., et. al. do an amazing job of packing the relevant practical facts needed in a daily practice or ER in a small space. The emergency care chapters particularly provide the kind of memory jogging details of care that one needs while on the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take one family practice book, this should be it. (But wouldn't you take a good novel instead?) It covers the waterfront with details of diagnosis and treatment of all of the common and most of the uncommon disorders without the clutter of the rare. Good for students and residents in my estimation.

5-0 out of 5 stars U. of Iowa, Handbook of FP
Excellent pocket reference. I'm a 3rd year FP resident and have found it helpful in the office and in the hospital. Just wish there was a new version -last one was in 1997.

    Book Description

For the 20th edition of this classic text, Silen has expanded his discussion of the role of CT scans in diagnosing abdominal pain and cut the material on such obsolete procedures or nosologic entities as abdominal paracentesis, pyplyositis, and Bornholm's disease. The book continues to be the outstanding guide to the difficult task of diagnosing and deciding how to manage acute abdominal pain, where decisions must be made quickly and mistakes can kill patients. More generally, it remains the most venerable of all texts on the art and science of bedside diagnosis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the first book to read on abdominal problems
One of the most influential medical texts ever. Cope's work gets only more relevant with increasing fragmentation of care. I would argue the book is especially useful for those NOT planning a career in surgery. The work is concise, accurate, and filled with memorable language. If you spend half an hour on the appendicitis section you should be equipped to make the diagnosis correctly. Other sections are equally good, as Dr. Silen has the sense not to fix what is not broken.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every medical doctor...surgeon or not...
I readed this book the first time 26 years ago, and it gave me a "sixth" sence as a suregon. Today I, as orthopaedical surgeon still have in my mind the essentials of the Dr. Cope's master-piece. I think it must be as a duthy ("a must be read book") in every serious medical school, to teach alumnii the surgeon's mind...even if the alumnii goes to clinical areas later on.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for students and residents of surgery

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic medical book, required reading for all doctors.
This book is an enduring classic on the diagnosis of abdominal conditions. It is a masterful exposition of differential diagnosis and physical examination. As the director of a residency program in obstetrics and gynecology, I have made it required reading for all of our residents. It is well-written, clear, concise, and full of practical wisdom. Anybody who sees patients should be familiar with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for primary care providers
I am a family nurse practitioner and a nurse practitioner educator. I found this book to be an excellent resource for primary care providers. The format is logical and easy to follow - it includes pathogenesis as well as physical findings, differential diagnosis, diagnostic tests and management. I especially liked the patient education material included with each entry. The guidebook has appendices on special diets, procedures, EKG interpretation etc. and the pharmaceutical information is up to date. We are planning to use Family Practice Guidelines as the protocol resource in our office.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Nurse Practitioners
I found this book to be an excellent resource for nurse practitioners. It is very complete and nicely formatted for quick reference. Each condition includes a reproducable patient teaching sheet and there are appendixes for diets and procedures. 5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for obstetrical practitioners.
This book is an absolute "must have" for obstetrical practitioners and expectant parents who are looking for a way back into normal childbirth. Medicalized obstetrics has taught their students and society that "techno-birth" is not only logical but safe. This book proves that the way we have been delivering babies for the past 40 years is not the safest most competent care we can give. Hopefully, after reading this book, the practitioner will come away with a renewed sense of purpose in providing safe, logical, evidence-based care, and the expectant parent will take a firmer stand against allowing unneccessary and hazardous "routine" birth interventions. We are all the better for this book and the many years of sound, documented research it provides us. The next generation of babies will thank us!

5-0 out of 5 stars An important reference work for anyone involved with birth.
This book is an invaluable reference tool for anyone involved in childbirth, including educators, doulas, midwives, nurses and doctors. It provides reviews of the current literature regarding just about any procedure of standard care that a pregnant woman is likely to encounter in the American medical system. This book provides important information, especially for anyone who is trying to convince an OB that "standard procedures" (like limiting food for a laboring woman) may not be supported by research ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Fine for reviewing areas of weakness
I concur with the previous reviewer that the publishers should have been more careful to verify that the Q&A's were accurate and matched with one another. The content of the book is overall very thorough...FAR more so than needed for taking the exam (the AANP version which I passed today!). If you have this book, DO NOT go through it cover to cover as your main source of review, but, use it as an adjunct for areas of weakness. The CDRom was disappointing as each subject area had less than 15 questions. I strongly recommend taking a review course to focus more on general principles. Good luck to all!

2-0 out of 5 stars ANP Review
This was the most frustrating review book I've ever used. The information appears to be concise, organized and complete, but the review questions and answers leave a lot to be desired. In one section, 10 questions were left unanswered. In several others, answers were there, but didn't match the questions (in numerical order). Many times the answer was written correctly but aligned with the wrong letter. The CD ROM was good, but several answers did not jive with information given in the book. All in all, this could have been a great review book if ANYone had bothered to proof read it before going to print. Very dissapointed, and I'd like a refund. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable Intro to Medical Informatics
I have used this book for an intro. course and found it to be a reasonable beginner book. Medical Informatics is a broad topic to say the least, and any book attempting to summarize it will suffer from the task.

This book is slightly dated, but has a helpful web site.

If you want a broad exposure to MI then this is not a bad place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first in Intenet compatible books
This book not only covers all of the varied and important topics in Medical Informatics, it does so in a unique way using the conventions of the Internet. Key words appear in blue and are underlined. These words not only appear in the index, but the authors maintain a server where these references point to URLs with the latest updated information on the topic cited. Thus the book is an expert source to material far beyond what can be contained within its own pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars My funny bone hurts
There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.

Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.

Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The true medicine is humour
As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem!
This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Dr. Bennett did a terrific job pulling together both classic and original quotes about doctors and medicine. Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Best of all, buy the book for your medical friends or anyone who enjoys funny and insightful lines about doctors, medicine, and health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for The Doctor's Book of Humorous Quotations
The following reviews were sent in about my new book:

The practice of medicine is a serious affair. Dr. Bennett's new book is a lighthearted counterweight to our daily effort, allowing us to chuckle at ourselves, our colleagues, our profession and all of those who interact with it. The book is also a good source for that fitting joke or quip you might need for a lecture, a toast or a presentation. Open to any page for a few moments of zany entertainment. It makes a perfect gift for yourself, a friend or as a "thank you" to a colleague. Alan Stone, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine, The George Washington University Medical Center.

This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. It's loaded with anecdotes, definitions, jokes and quotations about doctors and medicine. Almost no medically related subject is left out. Even in you think you don't have time to read (who does?) find some time for this relaxing and enjoyable book. Howard Fischer, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Humor and laughter in medicine are needed now more than ever before because of the increasing stresses of modern medical practice. This gem of a book compiled by Dr. Bennett, himself a noted humorist, includes a great variety of quips, quotes, and jokes that can serve as a lifeline to sanity for stressed-out physicians whether in practice or still in their training years. Much of the material in this book is both funny and original and can be used to liven up ward rounds, medical lectures, and yes, even the sacred physician-patient relationship. It should be relished but should also be shared. Lugwig A. Lettau, Charleston, SC.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great review book for USMLE Step 3
Though most people declare that for Step 3 you only need "two #2 pencils" (which is no longer necessary now anyway), it's helpful to have something to review, if for no other reason than reassuring yourself that you remember something you learned in medical school. This book (along with Swanson's Family Practice Review) were more than enough for my review. The questions focus on perhaps more obscure topics (or at least more obscure topics within common clinical problems) which is good for review. It also has images (photos, ECGs, radiographs) at the end for those of us who are not radiologists or dermatologists.

Though you'll probably score the same on Step 3 as you did on Step 2 and Step 1, this book might help you if you need some reassurance or just want to do some light review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Board review, review
This is a comprehensive review of important subjects in Family Practice. It includes a cd-rom for those of us who are computer users. I would recommend this as a good form of review for the last 2 weeks before boards ... Read more

    Book Description

A biomedical engineering perspective on the theory, methods, and applications of signal processing This book provides a unique framework for understanding signal processing of biomedical signals and what it tells us about signal sources and their behavior in response to perturbation. Using a modeling-based approach, the author shows how to perform signal processing by developing and manipulating a model of the signal source, providing a logical, coherent basis for recognizing signal types and for tackling the special challenges posed by biomedical signals-including the effects of noise on the signal, changes in basic properties, or the fact that these signals contain large stochastic components and may even be fractal or chaotic. Each chapter begins with a detailed biomedical example, illustrating the methods under discussion and highlighting the interconnection between the theoretical concepts and applications. The author has enlisted experts from numerous subspecialties in biomedical engineering to help develop these examples and has made most examples available as Matlab or Simulink files via anonymous ftp. Without the need for a background in electrical engineering, readers will become acquainted with proven techniques for analyzing biomedical signals and learn how to choose the appropriate method for a given application. ... This book deals on a very indepth level as to the inner workings of the family, and the assessment and interventions required to facilitate healing. I found the book to be very user friendly; it outlines the categories for assessment and intervention in a concise manner, as well as the diagramming of communication patterns which I found invaluable. For students it would have been beneficial for Wright and Leahey to include a completed CFAM and CFIM to give the reader a complete picture of the whole process. Overall, this is an excellent tool for any nurse to use in their practice. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Family Medicine Certification Review
Overall a solid book. It has a few errors, but these are usually a matter of a poorly worded question. The answers are usually brief and address only the question asked. They don't give much of an overview of the topic. These answers did stimulate me to look things up on my own which is good -- but also bad because the text's answers were not complete enough. This seems to be a straight forward do the questions and see the answers type book. ... Read more
