5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Survival Guide for Nurses
Donna Cardillo, RN succeeds in capturing the experience of "your first year as a nurse." Her book provides first hand accounts from recent graduates, practicing nurses, and Donna's own experiences. Donna guides you through the steps of getting your first position, finding resources to help you succeed, and communicating with coworkers, patients, and their families. Her comprehensive book even includes a chapter on stereotypes, annoyances, and myths which will resonate with every nurse both male and female. That chapter also provides the reader with some clever ways to respond to stereotypes. Seasoned nurses will find Donna's chapters on staying connected and taking your career to the next level filled with invaluable tools to help them flourish in their career. In a time where the nursing profession is entering a shortage, and working conditions for nurses have been less than ideal, it is refreshing to read accounts of nurses that maintain a positive outlook and can share their coping strategies with the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read how to be a professional nurse
As a nursing student or beginning nurse, looking for guidance and advice that helps in adapting to the unfamiliar role as a nurse is invaluable. Reading countless numbers of textbooks, listenting to long lectures from instructors, and getting 30 second advice from staff nurses can leave a the beginning nurse bewildered as to what to expect once their license and career is on the line. Donna Wilk Cardillo has written a book that can help the beginning nurse develop into a sheer professional.

I am a nursing student with a degree in business. As I was about to embark upon the nursing profession, I needed some sound advice that would give me confidence as I started my new career. Reading "Your First Year As A Nurse," I found out how to interact with patients, families, doctors, co-workers, and supervisors in a professional manner that I hadn't learned about in school. The book offers "real world" experiences and testimony from other students and professionals that helped me to visualize myself taking on the nurse role with confidence. Cardillo has used language that is easily interpreted and challenges the reader to make themselves into a better professional nurse.

Cardillo's book also explains in depth how to be marketable in the nursing profession. Using her expertise in career development, Cardillo offers much advice to the beginning nurse about how to advance themselves to their desired position. The reader can learn and become comfortable in obtaining their own business cards, establishing mentors, interacting with health care professionals, and creating self-confidence that leads to success.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Challenging Year of Nursing
I have been a nurse for almost 30 years, and would have benefited greatly from a book like this. Nursing school is wonderful for teaching a lot of technical information, and if a student is in a 4-year program, some professionalism, but Donna's book takes the reader to the next level--that of fully embracing your new life as a nurse and practicing nursing as a true professional.

She gives many helpful tips on interacting professionally with patients and doctors (oh, how intimidated I was by doctors in 1976!). She discusses the value of networking and becoming connected with others in our profession through the Internet. She talks about how to avoid burnout, a situation seen quite a bit today with nursing shortages nationwide. Donna outlines the value of setting goals and journaling, techniques designed to enhance self-worth and value.

This book is a must-read for either a nursing student or a new graduate, as it is just filled with common-sense ways to make the most of an extremely valuable profession. After all, if you are going to take 2-4 years out of your life to pursue a nursing career, don't you want to make it the best decision you ever made? Donna's book will help you see clearly that nursing is an honorable and valuable life journey.

1-0 out of 5 stars unhappy
I purchased 5 copies sight unseen, based soley on quality articles I have read of Cardillo. This book is an insult to the intellegence of new nurses. Much of the content is true and could be helpful if not presented in such a condesending manner. Now I have 5 books I intended to hand out to the new nurses I mentor - never would I suggest they read this book. Cardillo is a great writer, I'm shocked she really wrote this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good medicine for nurses RETURNING to work, too
And in the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
T.S. Eliot

*Your First Year As A Nurse* was exactly what I needed when I needed it, but not for the reason you might expect. I will be 50 years-old this year. I practiced nursing from 1977 to 1991 and am returning to clinical nursing after I complete an RN refresher program. While I may not be "a new grad" I certainly feel new. So much has changed in the last 12 years. I am in need of a big dose of confidence and Ms. Cardillo's book is just the right medicine.

The book is well-written, organized and sprinkled with gentle humor. It addresses almost every aspect of feeling inadequate because of inexperience, but it doesn't dwell on negatives. Instead, it focuses on the joy and value of learning and emphasizes strong communication skills. I especially liked it because it is filled with personal stories, and comments from real nurses in the trenches.

The most amazing thing about the book, to me, is that it maintains a realistic outlook in a positve manner without sounding like it was written by someone named Pollyanna. Ms. Cardillo makes it all seem possible in the real world because she writes with honesty. She looks at difficult situations head-on and instead of asking "What's the problem?" she asks, "What's the solution?"

I left nursing in 1991 in a state of complete burnout. It was a time of change that I could not accept: the dawn of HMOs, DRGs and managed care. Hospital nurses were being laid off in great numbers to save money and replaced with technicians who had two weeks training. Delegation and case loads became the buzz words.

Because of a severe shortage of hospital nurses, there is a huge recruiting effort to get nurses who have left back into the workforce. You'll find everything from RN refresher programs to intense hospital-based internships for nurses who have been out of the workforce for more than five years.

Our finances have changed and I need to go back to work as an RN. I was very frightened by this possibility even though I have always kept my nursing license active. And then I found Ms. Cardillo's book.

I have cried in places while reading it. It is as though I am recapturing the sacredness of nursing that I had lost. It isn't written just for the beginner. It is also wonderful for someone like me who has been out for a long time and wishes to return.

No, I don't have a long time left to work as a nurse (maybe a decade, 15 years at most), and some of the chapters on career building make me very sad when I think of what could have been. (I would love to go back and talk to that young woman but I can't.) Still, *Your First Year As A Nurse* gave me another lens through which to look at nursing.

The author reminded me of why I became a nurse in the first place so many years ago. 9/11 affected me deeply. Because of this book, I will "dare to care" once again-and maybe, if I'm lucky, know the place for the first time. Thank you, Ms. Cardillo, for writing the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me then....It helps me now!
At first, being a very green student in terms of learning nursing care, the very size of this book was intimidating. Being in an ADN-RN program, the learning if fast-paced so we often had a lot of chapters to read in a short amount of time. Though I wasn't a straight A student, I still found this book to be very helpful in aiding my understanding of the material, perhaps more now when I review it than at the time when I first read it. My favorite part is the illustrated procedure pages with step by step instructions. It covers everything from properly mitering a bed to IV therapy and so much more. I think our instructors chose well in picking this one for their first semester students. It's a great intro to learning nursing and a great review book too. I'm in my second semester and review it often while studying Med Surg.

5-0 out of 5 stars Potter & Perry Is The Best Textbook I've Ever Used
I found this book to be very comprehensive and easy to read. I also love the illustrations. The skills are very easy to follow.

2-0 out of 5 stars Much good information but just too big to carry daily
This is the textbook we use for the beginning nursing class. It provides much information for the nursing student but it is just too big to carry to school everyday. I know the authors have seperate clinical skills book. They just try to make more money from the students. They should just seperate the this book into two sections-theory and skills. This will be much helpful for the students to handle it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to read but electronic resources are excellent
This is the textbook used in my first semester of nursing school. I read very little of it because I found the size intimidating, and the print was very small. It would take me several hours just to read one chapter. But the CD that came with the book has a tutorial on acids, bases and electroytes that I found extremely helpful. The Virtual Excursions workbook (purchased separately) was excellent. It was like getting extra clinical time. The study guide was good but it made the process of getting through each chapter even longer.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I love this book! It thoroughly explains the rationale behind the nursing concepts and procedures presented. There are sections with easy to understand step by step instructions for carrying out procedures. The authors also do a great job of integrating concepts of anatomy and physiology in a clear concise manner. This book is a must for nursing students and instructors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book as foundation for medical microbiology students
I used this as one of my required texts for my microbiology class in med school. It had very good sections on parasitology, viruses, etc. It was fun learning the what parasites are endemic to certain regions of the world and what symptoms they cause. I was used the following: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This second book was great because it was thorough in the aspects of test preparation in these various ways: it helped me prepare for the type of questions asked by my microbiology professor. In this way when I was studying I knew which facts to study harder and to know better. I easily got in the top 1% of my medical microbiology in grades with the help of these two books. I give each book five stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much information
This book offers a very comprehensive look at microbiology and virology (with some immunology and parasitology thrown in); unfortunately, that's not a good thing if you're trying to study from it. The chapters are full of information on lab values and other minutiae that will be of interest to only those who make a living in the field. Otherwise, you'll have to search hard to pick out the relevant details that are worth remembering. There are definitely better, easier to use books on the market than this one

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a modern and exact book
This edition have news about micobiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for 2nd yr med school micro - but short on clin. stuff
depending on the focus of your course, this might not have enough clinical case-related material. Great for the "big flick" with a very well laid out presentation (not enough pix or graphs), very good overall. Lot's of people in my class chose the Appleton and Lange (same publisher) 'Review" version of this book (blue cover). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I just graduated from nursing school and the best book I had during school is this one. This was the only book that truly "spoke" to me about the realities of nursing school and I used it in all my courses. I plan to keep it handy because I know I am going to forget some of the information I learned about EKG's, Fluid & Electrolytes and some of the other things I may not use every day. These authors made me feel like they were talking to me, not at me and I enjoyed reading the information that they had to share. I also appreciated the numerous "short cuts" that I learned. The cartoon-like figures were always good for a chuckle and the examples in the book really fit my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone in nursing school no matter what level you are. Good luck! Keep studying! It's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is the best book ever! I have used it since my first day in nursing school and I am amazed by how much helpful information fits into such a small book! I love the information about how to get along with faculty and also write papers, study, take tests, etc. Everything I've read I've been able to use. The section on the internet is fantastic and I've been able to use the links to find information for my patients and for those nasty care plans! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is in nursing school and anyone who plans to go to nursing school. I plan to keep mine after I graduate because I know I'll be referring to it when I'm working. If you are struggling in nursing school, get this book! It will help! ... Read more

Extensive, updated bibliographies at the end of each chapter, split into primary and secondary sources, direct the reader to excellent resources for further study. 4-0 out of 5 stars if you have to do theory
I'm not a big nursing theory fan, but if this is required reading, this book isn't too terrible. It does give some interesting background work on all of the theorists and tries not to complicate any of the already sometimes confusing and convoluted theories. For this topic - that's saying a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques
Test Success: Test-Taking Techniques for Beginning Nursing Students 3rd ed. by Particia M. Nugent and Barbara A. Vitale
This book is designed for fundamentals of nursing. It introduces techniques for developing a positive mental attitude, critical thinking skills, and study techniques. It teaches specific and general test-taking techniques. It identifies the nursing process as a form of problem solving. The book emphasizes multiple-choice questions but also addresses structured response, restricted response, extended essay questions and performance appraisal as well as computer applications in education and evaluation. It facilitates active participation in learning by displaying over 700 questions with accompanying correct answers and rationale. There are three simulated tests of equal difficulty intended as a pretest, test after chapter eight, and a posttest in chapter 10. It is recommended that questions for specific categories in chapter 10 be answered after that content in discussed in class. Practice questions are in the following categories: the world of the patient and nurse, common theories related to meeting patient's basic human needs, communications and meeting patient's emotional needs, physical assessment, meeting patient's physical safety and mobility needs, hygiene and comfort needs, fluid and nutritional needs, elimination needs, oxygen needs, perioperative needs, microbiological safety needs, needs of the patient in the community setting, administration of medications and pharmacology. This is an excellent book for beginning nursing students to learn techniques of test success and to practice questions related to fundamentals of nursing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test Success!
I have reviewed and used as a resource, Test Success; Test-taking Strategies for Beginning Nursing Students, 2000 (3rd Ed.). I found this text invaluable in my work with Junior-level BSN students.

This text incorporates the theory background, how to read questions, how to analyze questions, and then provides a wealth of practice questions relating to fundamental nursing skills.

This book begins with the mental and physical conditions for successful test-taking -- things students forget about. Positive mental attitudes, getting enough sleep before a test, and relaxation are a few of the "openers". The focus of this book is on the individual's success and the introductory chapters demonstrate this focus.

The text goes into critical thinking -- and expectations of thinking in nursing school. An indepth review of how to study is covered. This has helped raise a few test scores in my course. Most students never learn how to study. They get by fairly well, but when the assigned reading covers 100 pages of indepth material, they don't know how to organize it or plan for it. This book assists them in organizing the workload of reading and studying.

Test-taking strategies are complete, thorough, and have examples along the way. Once through the materials, students have multiple practice exams (written for Fundamentals students) that allow them to practice their new test-taking skills.

I recommend this book for all beginning nursing students -- LPN, ADN, and BSN! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars So-So Text
As an RN with 28 years experience, I was disappointed with the quality of Ms. Friedman's writing. She is overly repetitive with descriptive materials, tends to ramble on, uses slang terms occassionally, and reveals personal bias. There is no place in nursing for unprofessional terms or bias against groups based on religious differences or lack of religious orientation. Positive qualities of this book include adaptation stategies for use in applying nursing theories to families and making appropriate NANDA diagnoses. The Friedman Model is included and well illustrated. Several tables are included and are helpful to clarify wordy text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drink More Coffee!
I am a fourth year BSN student. This book was our assigned text for our family class. I felt the book was to wordy on explanations. Points were not clearly established. They were merely tossed around comparing and contrasting one research study versus another. I would get so lost in the theoretical views from numerous positions that I would literally fall asleep reading this book. Surely, there is a more palatable undergraduate book on family theory?

Book Description

Critical Thinking & Clinical Judgement -- A Practical Approach, 3rd Edition recognizes that nurses must be knowledgeable workers who are thought-oriented rather than task-oriented. This resource makes the concept of critical thinking in nursing come alive through an insightful, motivational style that inspires the reader to connect with their own innate talents to develop the skills needed to succeed in today's challenging health care setting. The book is designed to promote the development of critical thinking by providing a clinically relevant, user-friendly text to help learners master content in a meaningful way. The book makes difficult concepts easy to learn by focusing on "how to" (application) while giving supporting rationale (theory). It also stresses the importance of ethics- and standards-based professional practice in a world of increasing accountability. It also carefully integrates gerontology concepts and cultural, spiritual, and diversity aspects throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AJN Book of the Year Award Winner!
This book recieved a 2003 AJN Book of the Year Award. Now that I have digested it, I understand why my mentor gave it to me. I am an MSN student, but this book is a must read for all those involved in nursing education. That includes both faculty and students. The writing style holds one's interest. The topic of critical thinking can be so incredibly dry. This book is anything but dry. It's fabulous." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Surefire Documentation" Review
This is a wonderful book. It was given to me to review by one of the charge nurses where I work--a long term care facility in a small town in Iowa. This text not only gives very good instruction on documentation, it is organized well. Each cover includes a quick reference guide to assist with finding specific areas of concern. It is well written and includes text boxes with more specifics and concrete examples. I have recommended it to my Director of Nursing Services as a resource that could be used in the other 2 nursing facilities in the corporation. An excellent reference text with easy to find entries! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a ready reference. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good fast review of Pathophys. 4 days before exam!
As I said, 2day I passed my Pathophys exam due to this book. It's really good and made me understand sooooo many principles that i've never understood before. That's a really good one but i give it a 4/5 rating cause the book is quite expensive.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't over estimate this book
This book isn't for medical students, isn't for nursing student but should be good for a high school student wanting to learn about pathology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with specific, realistic, useful information.
A friend at work showed me this book, delighted with it. The first time I looked at it, I learned a "sign" I had never heard of before. With almost fifteen years' full-time experience on stepdown units, and a fascination with anatomy and physiology, I was not expecting to learn as many new things as I have from this book. The format is engaging, and almost begs people to pick it up and browse. It is a terrific home resource, and even better to leave lying around at the hospital. I have checked a number of on-line book sites and this book is not discounted anywhere. I think it's worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good General Review of Pathophysiology.
Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy is a good general review for students.

Each chapter begins with major points concerning the topic being discussed (eg. genetics or cardiovascular system) and then breaks down into specific disorders/conditions.

Explanation boxes appear throughout the chapters highlighting special points or ideas. Each chapter closes with a "Quick Quiz" to reinforce concepts.

The book uses simple language to explain complex ideas. Little reminders in the margins point out important things to remember.

I would recommend this book to anyone taking patho who is strugling with the basic concepts. ... Read more
