    Book Description

This one-of-a-kind resource brings together all three "gastrointestinal" organ systems into one textbook of surgical and medical disorders of the GI tract, liver, billiary tract and pancreas. With a strong foundation in morphology, it offers a comprehensive and practical guide to the interpretation of endoscopic biopsies and resection specimens of the alimentary tract and related solid organs. In addition, chapters outline the current clinical approach to management and treatment options, wherever applicable, particularly regarding screening and surveillance recommendations for preneoplastic disorders. You will also find that diseases integrate key pathologic findings with relevant cytologic and genetic information necessary in order to establish an accurate diagnosis. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars poorly organized with small photographs
I would personally not recommend this textbook for the following reasons: The chapters are organized in a confusing way with chapters organized not based on organ but on disease type. Certain chapters are certainly better than others with the liver, pancreas and extrabiliary tract being particulary better than those covering the small and large intestine. The photographs are in certain cases adequate and in others are too small and hard to interpret. Overall, I would not buy this book given the high price but may consider using it as an ancillary text ... Read more

    Book Description

For the 20th edition of this classic text, Silen has expanded his discussion of the role of CT scans in diagnosing abdominal pain and cut the material on such obsolete procedures or nosologic entities as abdominal paracentesis, pyplyositis, and Bornholm's disease. The book continues to be the outstanding guide to the difficult task of diagnosing and deciding how to manage acute abdominal pain, where decisions must be made quickly and mistakes can kill patients. More generally, it remains the most venerable of all texts on the art and science of bedside diagnosis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the first book to read on abdominal problems
One of the most influential medical texts ever. Cope's work gets only more relevant with increasing fragmentation of care. I would argue the book is especially useful for those NOT planning a career in surgery. The work is concise, accurate, and filled with memorable language. If you spend half an hour on the appendicitis section you should be equipped to make the diagnosis correctly. Other sections are equally good, as Dr. Silen has the sense not to fix what is not broken.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every medical doctor...surgeon or not...
I readed this book the first time 26 years ago, and it gave me a "sixth" sence as a suregon. Today I, as orthopaedical surgeon still have in my mind the essentials of the Dr. Cope's master-piece. I think it must be as a duthy ("a must be read book") in every serious medical school, to teach alumnii the surgeon's mind...even if the alumnii goes to clinical areas later on.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for students and residents of surgery

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic medical book, required reading for all doctors.
This book is an enduring classic on the diagnosis of abdominal conditions. It is a masterful exposition of differential diagnosis and physical examination. As the director of a residency program in obstetrics and gynecology, I have made it required reading for all of our residents. It is well-written, clear, concise, and full of practical wisdom. Anybody who sees patients should be familiar with this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing recipe section
Excellent background information on the disease. One of the most complete descriptions and reasons why certain foods cause problems. However, I was very disappointed with the recipe section. I was expecting recipes for dishes that did not include foods that can cause heartburn. Instead, there were very common recipes, many containing several ingredients that GERD suffers should avoid, with instructions such as "if you have problems with onions, leave it out..." How helpful is that, really!?

3-0 out of 5 stars A good cookbook with a wrong recomendation.
I found this book to be fairly helpful. The recipies are ok with some helpful hints. One recomendation I feel should be included that has helped me beyond expectations is the use of a incline pillow called the Prop-Up Pillow (www.propuppillow.com). Anyone suffering from acid reflux should consider this pillow. It is made from NASA memory foam and is by far the most comfortable on the market. Eat right and use this pillow.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy to follow, delicious recipe book for GERD!
I just received this book from Amazon.com and have already tried a few of the recipes. The Grilled Lamb chops with cucumber relish was excellent. Another benefit is that all the recipes seem to be low in fat! I'll be showing this book to my allergist and ENT specialist!

5-0 out of 5 stars I like to cook and eat
I have heartburn and find myself unconciously avoiding the foods that make me feel bad. I haven't been able to find any recipes worth making in other books and websites. They're either boring or just not appetizing. I just bought this book, but it's easy to follow and actually lists foods I should avoid and tells me about other treatments besides medication (which I hate to take). So far I've tried only one of the recipes (oven fried chicken), but it was delicious. Even my husband (who does not have heartburn) loved it, as did my two kids. If the other recipes are this good, this book will find a permanent place in my kitchen!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST for sufferers of acid reflux
Whether you suffer from occasional heartburn or full-blown GERD, this book is your quintessential guide to living a healthier and happier life. It provides a perfect blend of facts and accessible insight for improving your quality of life. The book is presented in two very comprehensive sections. The first part deals primarily with the technical aspects of this debilitating disease. The medical information is very well written in plain English yet it conveys the latest in scientific knowledge about acid reflux. You'll have no trouble learning all there is to know and what you can do to ensure accurate diagnosis and successful treatment. This first section alone could be a bestseller given the millions of people who struggle with any form of this disease.

The second part of the book is equally remarkable in its presentation. It offers easily followed, delicious recipes that have been created specifically to abate GERD. Best of all, most of the ingredients are already in your cupboard! Any of the appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and desserts will satisfy even the most discerning gourmet. Each recipe includes a brief introduction, concise directions and nutritional analysis. Banish the bland and start eating your way to health.

If you thought you were doomed to a painful existence, and a diet of bread and water, this book will change your mind and your life. ... Read more

The complete resource for digestive health.

It's been said that health begins in the stomach. When digestion is not working properly, the whole body suffers. But nearly half of digestive disorders can be averted with proper eating, exercise, stress management, and related lifestyle modifications.

In Natural Stomach Care , gastroenterologist Anil Minocha, M.D., combines the wisdom of traditional Eastern healing with the advancements of conventional Western medicine to offer a wide range of easy-to-use, affordable, and effective at-home natural therapies that can strengthen digestion, keep the colon clean and the bowels moving, and improve overall health. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent research, crystal-clear writing
I'm a full-time health writer, and after 15 years in the business I've rarely come across a book that so perfectly combines medical findings with practical, easy-to-follow advice. Dr. Minocha is clearly an advocate of alternative styles of medicine, yet he approaches his topic with the eye of a scientist. When I want to know what something does, how it works, how to use it myself--the answers are here. This book rarely leaves my desk, and I expect I'll keep using it as a reference for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Natural Stomach Care - Book Review
Digestive ailments, especially chronic conditions, are troublesome to millions of Americans. Without proper care and treatment, such ailments often reoccur and may persist for years. Dependence on prescription drugs for long periods of time can be difficult for many patients. An alternative to prescribed drugs for treating ailments of the stomach has been the application of "natural remedies." The "natural" alternative to traditional medicine has for centuries proven to be an effective cure for many stomach and digestive ailments. The use of "natural remedies" often eliminates for the user the need for drugs and possibly surgery. Dr. Anil Minocha, in his book, Natural Stomach Care introduces to the reader a wide range of easy-to-follow and effective therapies. Both the medical doctor and the layman will find useful the health information discussed in Natural Stomach Care.

It is surprising to learn just how many folk remedies are available to the interested person. Most of these remedies have been utilized around the world for hundreds if not thousands of years. All the material in this comprehensive discussion of the subject has been presented in a well organized and easy to follow format. The author first wants us to have an understanding as to how the body functions including the digestive process of food, the importance of restful sleep, proper daily nutrition, the reduction of stress in our lives as well as other factors which, when taken together, all contribute to a health life style. The author uses his many years of practice and research as a gastroenterologist to highlight the many factors that contribute to the wellness of the human body. Dr. Minocha corrects misconceptions that many people have held for years about the proper care and feeding of the stomach. In addition, he suggests many useful "natural remedies" for such ailments as inflammatory bowel disease, gastric ulcers, intestinal gas, constipation and other common digestive disorders. In another chapter he introduces detoxification techniques which, when applied, clean the gut of all impurities. A process that uses "probiotics" in which helpful microorganisms are introduced and help to keep the digestive process "in balance." Throughout the book the author provides helpful information on his subject, describing in detail each problem and how to either treat the ailment or the preventive measures necessary to prevent it from occurring.

Natural Stomach Care is highly recommended for people who are experiencing problems with their stomach or digestive system and are interested in learning about and applying "natural remedies" as an effective treatment for such ailments. Persons who are presently free of digestive and stomach problems will also benefit by learning natural preventive measures that when applied, should keep the stomach and digestive system properly working throughout a lifetime. Natural Stomach Care is a worthwhile addition to all consumer health collections in health sciences libraries and as a consumer book for public libraries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Natural Stomach Care
This book is a winner. Speaking as one who has suffered with stomach disorders for a decade, I can testify that the information is solid and easy to understand. In fact, it's the most pragmatic book I have ever seen on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Stomach Cure
Since I have suffered from digestive problems for a full decade, I had more than a passing interest in this book. After reading it, I put into practice some of Dr. Minocha's teachings. Book Description

Virtual colonoscopy is a rapidly developing technique that promises to be safer, more economical, and less intrusive than conventional diagnostic tests for colon cancer. This procedure allows the physician to look inside the body without having to insert a long tube into the colon, as in conventinal colonoscopy, or filling the colon with liquid barium, as with barium enema. VC has attracted the attention of the media and the public as a much-lauded alternative to current techniques.

In response to this demand, renowned radiologist Dr. Abraham Dachman and a distinguished list of international contributors have put together a comprehensive atlas that depicts the entire range of this new technique. The illustrations are clear and true to life, showing normal and abnormal findings in virtual colonoscopy. This unique resource also points out critical clinical elements in using VC and summarizes the state of the art.

The "Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy" fills a void for all radiologists and gastroenterologists needing to or simply interested in learning about this exciting new technique. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I was newly diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis
In January 2003, at age 40, after years of living with what I thought were my severe food allergies reactions, I was diagnosed with accute, universal, UC. I did not know where to turn for accurate, complete and honest information. I felt my doctor could only offer an overview of the disease. This was one of the first books that I read and I would strongly recommend it. Until I met fellow suffers through CCFA, I felt very alone with this disease. This book gave me a clear indication of what I have and what to expect with UC. I highly recommend this for the newly diagnosed - it was incredibily informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for the IBD community
This is a great reference reference book for anyone interested in IBD, regardless of how long you have had the disease. The title implies it is for the newly diagnosed, but I found it to be a great reference and I have had Crohn's for over ten years and have done a lot of research in the area. While I have read other good overview books, they become dated as new treatments become available. Sklar's book provides a fairly comprehensive and up-to-date review of the current treatments. It's also great to have a fellow-sufferer's perspective. Read it (and don't forget to support the Crohn's and Colits Foundation of America).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, very complete
An excellent overview of the disease and the most up-to-date and complete listing of current treatment options. I have had Crohn's disease for ten years and am very well researched on the disease and still found this book helpful. The title would imply it's a "starter" book, but it's also an excellent reference for veterans of the disease like me. The one negative review that claimed the author was "jaded" is a rather poorly thought out comment. When you write a book about the disease, you talk about the disease and it's complications. While it might be uplifting to read about all the people living comfortably with the disease, it doesn't help you take an active role in determining your treatment. This book does. All of us that suffer with the disease need to take the lead in understanding the disease and making sure we have the best medical care. So do your work! Read this book and others and support the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Here's to hoping you feel better soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Crohn's Book Available
I have a small library of books on Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis, and this one by far offers the most updated and helpful information. Whenever I have a question about my diet, or my medication, or a new symptom, this is the first book I pull off the shelf. The book is also extremely well-written, with clear explanations of all of the medical information, and some nice personal perspectives from the author, who has Crohn's disease. If you--or a loved one--have recently been diagnosed, do yourself a favor and buy this book. When you close it, you will be a wiser and more prepared patient or caregiver than you were before you opened it.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you've just been diagnosed, it better be Crohn's...
While I had high hopes for this new book I was very concerned about the VERY negative outlook the author gives the reader. Unless you suffer from Crohn's and a severe case at that, this book offers alot of information but little hope.

If it is a your child that has been diagnosed look to Carol Svec terrific book on current medical research and help. Also Dr. Sabil book about Ulcerative Colitis is much better, as is the Guide to dealing with Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis in Children available on the CCFA website. Not all patients are as jaded as Ms.Sklar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best one volume guide to IBD available
This new book was recently published in March by Firefly Books. It's a selection of the Canadian Medical Association's Personal Health Series and written by an IBD gastroenterologist at the University of Toronto Medical School. In very clear language and using excellent diagrams, Dr. Saibil discusses IBD's signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures and instruments, the role and effects of diet and nutrition, available drug options, pros and cons of surgery and possible complications, effects on sex and pregnancy, insurance and IBD, and other quality of life issues. One major plus is this book is up-to-date on the latest IBD research and treatments. In my opinion, it's the best one volume guide to IBD available! On the CCFC and CCFA's book lists

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for Family Members
I just finished Dr. Saibil's book. I found it very helpful and comprehensive. It is a wonderful book for anyone who has a family member or friend with Crohn's disease. My mother has had Crohn's for many years and this book helped me to better understand her disease. Thank you Dr. Saibil for writing this well needed book.

5-0 out of 5 stars crohn's disease & ulcerative colitis
I have been a Crohn's patient for 20 plus years. Over those years I have tried to understand my disease and gain more information on medical advances in the IBD field.Unfortunately, until Dr Saibil's book came out I was left in the dark. I also felt that I did not have a tool to give to family and friends - to help them understand my disease. Several years ago I bought Dr Saibil's book when it was initially published and recently I have bought 2 copies of his newly updated version of Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis. I highly recommend it to anyone who suffers from IBD or knows someone who does. I use my copy to keep track of tests I have had and drugs I have used.

Recently I also visited with a newly diagnosed 14 year old. It was invaluable for me to have a book to give to this frightened young lady. I knew she would benefit from Dr Saibil's book since he writes in a clear, precise, easy to understand fashion.

While at the bookstore looking for the new edition of Dr Saibil's book, I was pleased to see there are other versions in this series that are being published to help patients with various health issues. Hurray - for authors and publishers who are out there trying to produce readable material for those of us who are in need of more information about our disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars textbook of gi radiology
I unfortunatley bought this book from superbooks. com/ tradrer's library who did not send me the book for close to four weeks. They only sent me volume one of the two volume set, when I called them, they said they would send the second book out but never did, with a subsequent phone call, they again said they would send out the book, this is after being on hold for over and hour, when questioned why they said they had the book and did , the customer service person hung up on me...now they do not answer their phone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best GI Radiology Book Ever
This book is an outstanding reference. It is complete, thorough, superbly written, and beautifully illustrated. It has been, and continues to be, the gold standard text in the rapidly evolving field of gastrointestinal radiology. This text is a must for any radiology department library, and an excellent value for any radiologist performing or interpreting flouroscopy or cross-sectional body imaging studies. ... Read more
