5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail. I continue to use the book as a resource. I am currently a hospital CEO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great balance of theory and practice
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Novice Planner
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides the fundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health care organization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of real examples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest in strategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcare industry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by the purchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstanding authors in person during graduate study/research.

5-0 out of 5 stars exactly what I did expect
I have the book for two days and I like to read in it as I loved to read Tom Clancy's first stories, diificult to put down, indeed the first management book that I prefered to my used lectures in the evening . the content is what I needed in the field of stratégic management. it explains the fundamentals and give examples out of real live. there are some practical details which I see as very usefull for direct applications. I do not regret this this acquisition, the autors seem to have great experience, I found a lot of practical sens and no useless theoretical stuff. better, you can find your way in minutes through such a "big" book ad I found a lot of US.management ideas of interest in Europe. I do recommend this and I am looking for more by the same autor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for every serious dieter!
I have found using Allan's Food and Exercise Diary, along with his fat and calorie counter book, to be incredibly helpful in losing weight and getting in shape. Anyone who is serious about wanting to lose weight, whether it be 5 lbs or 100 lbs, absolutely must keep a food diary. I have tried to lose weight for years unsuccessfully. I recently started keeping this food diary every day, and so far I have lost 10 lbs! It has a very easy-to-use format, and has a section of tips. It allows you to track your progress. It is small enough for me to carry in my purse, so I never miss a beat. It really helps me feel in control while I'm dieting. Along with enough daily exercise, keeping a food diary is absolutely the way to go. I have raved about this book as well as the Fat and Calorie counter to my friends, several of whom want to get it now! I can't emphasize enough how much help it has been in losing weight. I finally feel like I CAN do it! And you can too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful weightloss tool
The only way to lose weight is to take in less calories then you burn every day. I knew I needed to do that when I purchased this book and the companion Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. I decided to give use the diary for the ten weeks it covers and if I didn't lose at least ten pounds I wouldn't bother with it again. When I hit a weight loss of 20 pounds and still had some weeks to go I knew i had found a system that would work for me. And yes I did try all kinds of other diets.

Like other reviewers say it quickly becomes clear to you where those extra calories are coming from. I stopped using the diary and my weight loss stalled. It is so easy to forget you ate a little too much the day before.

How well has it worked? So far I've dropped two jeans sizes. My friends have seen my success and purchased copies for themselves.

I really like that it tracks your exercise each day. And it tracks your water intake. The fat counter helps me see if I am eating a high density or low density food. This little book taught me what was wrong with my diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for munch-a-holics like me
I am a constant grazer...grazing on whatever food is in front of me. This book forced me to take a closer look at what I was eating for ten weeks. It was amazing how that changed my eating habits and made me more conscious of the choices I was making. It does take some time...about 20 to 30 minutes per day for the first week. That is spent dissecting what is in your food and figuring out the calories, fat, etc. I highly recommend buying the "Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat, & Carbohydrate Counter" to go with this book...it will make your life easier if you are truly serious about eating better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good
This worked really well. I got this book about two weeks ago and I've lost 8 lbs. so far. It definantly gave me an in depth look at what I was doing wrong and how to eat right.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Works
I used this book about 5 years ago - it really worked. I lost 37 pounds in a year. I followed the recommendations and kept the food log every single day. It changed my life. I have kept within 5 pounds of my lowest weight ever since. I exercised and drank lots of water - now I am a different person and run 3 marathons and 3 half marathons each year.
Thanks Allan!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
excellent text! Dr. Dee does a great job at explaining the integration of the body's systems. easy to read text, though not overly simplified; wonderful flow charts & diagrams (these are what got me an A in the class seeing as how i'm a visual learner); "running problems" through out the chapters that test your knowledge along the way. i also highly recommend purchasing/using the accompanying CD-ROM-- very helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars You got to be kidding
This book has nothing intergrated in it. This woman who claims to write the best physiology textbooks around must be lying.

Her book is [not good]. It leaves out too many details, has a bunch of senseless flow charts that tell you nothing and provides no explanation. I have a copy of her book and it is thinnner the most physiology textbooks. I wonder why its thinner then most other physiology textbooks? Well its because she does not take time to explain the physiology of the human body.

She maybe a good teacher but she can't write a textbook for anything. A 10 year old child can write a better physiology textbook.

I would not buy this book at all. Bad book!

You want a good physiology and anatomy textbook? I recommend Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook. Hole's anatomy and physiology textbook makes Dr. Silverthorn's textbook look like something you clean your car windows with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing pease of work!!!
Having been studying molecular biology for 3 years, this is without a doubt the best book I have read so far! It may leave out some details yes, but the context and the easy-read of the book is truly amazing! Contains well presented diagrams, work-charts, tables and figures - makes it really easy to get a quick overview and understand the basics of human physiology.

Every student in the field of biological sciences should have a copy of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Physiology: An Integrated Approach
An excellent book for a first-year physiology student. It's an easy to read text filled with colorful diagrams and flow charts. At the end of each chapter is a short summary, and review questions of varying levels of difficutly. There's even websites listed where you can learn more, as well as the Prentice Hall website which lists even more review questions. An accompanying student workbook is also available. It's the best physiology textbook I know of.

"We have been trying to feed our hurting, longing hearts with physical food," writes Gwen Shamblin, registered dietician and founder of the Weigh Down program, which emphasizes "God's power--not 'will power.'" This book offers instruction on how to eat only when physically hungry, how to "nourish the soul with a relationship with God," and how not to confuse different hunger urges. The diet plan teaches you not to overeat by letting you eat exactly what you want, but much less of it.

The key is to understand hunger, recognize fullness, and sense what your body is really calling for. You learn to "rate" food by its appeal, and eat your favorite foods first, stopping when you're getting full (not waiting until you're stuffed). This is not a nutritional guide; in fact, Shamblin's own sample menu is high in fat, cholesterol, sugar, and salt. The Weigh Down Diet is, however, a guide to using your religious beliefs to help you stop overeating and see food in a new light. This book inspires you with scriptural passages, discussions of "God's rules" about eating, and assurances that God's love will help you win your battle with weight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Deep Solution to a Wider Problem
Ms. Shamblin's food research has turned up a real answer to an age-old question. Not too amazingly, God has quite an opinion on this topic. Those who desire to live "by the Book" (and to be free of excess poundage once and for all) will find great hope and much help in her textbook. A "thinking person" cannot miss the depth and clarity of God's heart in this matter. The reality of her findings closely mirror most Biblical teachings--too simple of an approach to be taken seriously by the proud. After managing fitness centers for years, watching people struggle with weight problems, and battling with it myself, I cannot express how grateful I am to Ms. Shamblin for taking the time to search out every passage in the Bible that deals with food, eating, and God's wonderful plan for making it work in the real world. What a refreshing and sound approach to keeping weight in check in a society where being "on a diet" FOREVER is both depressing and unrealistic. Super book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why aren't Christian's healthier????
Must be all the pot lucks? We need to keep our inheritance and keep good care of our temples. this book will help. I also like Jordan Rubin's "Maker's Diet" and Pastor Henry Wright's "A More Excellent way", which talks also about the spiritual casues for weight gain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cults are as Cults do
If you could take the diet principles away from Gwen Shamblin and the Remnant church, then you might have something worth supporting. Unfortunately - she has become the idol of the church - and the church lives a cultish existence. Best not to get involved.

1-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
The title of my review is true! I am a former Weigh Down coordinater and a number of years back lost all my weight on this program! I loved Gwen's teachings and they brought me so much closer to God. Now a few years later I find she has left her church and started her own(The Remnant)It clearly states on her website that if you are not obediant to God you will not be saved. There is no Grace in her message. We are saved by grace not by works lest any man should boast.I am saddened by this change because this program had the capacity to help lots of people but due to her blatant twisting of the Word of God I must and with profound sadness no longer support her book, teachings or program. The better alternative is Judy Halliday's Thin Within. If you are still interested in Weigh Down I suggest a search on the Web where you can read for yourself Gwen's beliefs and the statements on her site.See www.remnantfellowship.org and read for yourself the statement of faith. God Bless you all in your walk with Him!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've tried every diet and always come back to this one
I started this diet in 1997 and went to the classes in addition to reading the book. I lost 5 lbs that time, but every time I would try other diets such as pills, shakes, etc I always came back to Gwen's teachings. Most recently I have lost 15 lbs from eatting when hungry and stopping when full and reading Gwen's book about praying to God for my needs when I want to overeat or eat when not hungry. I've had a weight problem all my life and I'll be 35 this year. I've been on anti depressants off and on thru out my life and those contributed to my weight gain. I couldn't lose the weight until I was off of Paxil. Most recently I tried Slimfast once again and I was so hungry and miserable I finally decided that there is no quick fix and go back to the teachings of Weigh Down because it does work. It's really up to you. It can work quicker if you are faithful to your own hunger cues. Like Gwen had said on one of her tapes, you may not win every battle, but you have to fight it. ... Read more

Book Description

This monumental book traces the complex issues involved with the intergenerational transmission of competence and unveils some astonishing predictors found in the simple interactions between parents and their 1- and 2-year-old children. Meticulously recorded data, presented in detective-like style that grabs each and every reader, provide the scientific evidence underlying an alarming gap between the vocabularies of children from educated, advantaged families and children from families of low socioeconomic status -a gap that translates into widely different academic and intellectual performances as the children grow. As its many endorsers attest, this book is an absolute requisite for professionals in psychology, child and social development, speech and language, education, and early intervention, as well as critical reading for concerned families and the nation's policy makers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Of critical importance to parents, policy makerers, and edu
Hart and Risley have created an easy to read volume that speaks readily to parents, policy makers and educators. This book is a must for anyone who truly wants to understand the relationship between the way we interact with children and the evolution of their intellectual development. If you are interested in poverty prevention, early literacy intervention or the impact of family based literacy on childrens' academic success, you will be inspired by the work of Hart Risley.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious implications for early child intervention efforts
This book is one of the by-products of one of the most dedicated efforts to understand variances in the development of language. One of the reviewers of the book states that the work "...is a detective story of the most serious academic kind." Yet the book is written in a manner that would allow it to be required reading for "Parenting 102" if not "Parenting 101". The implications for parenting and public policy are profound ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good practice book
Quite extensive workbook about hearth arrhythmias. In each case chapter starts with short theory and than examples of charts for the particular arrhythmias and than you get a chance to practice yourself with number of charts, answers in the back with explanations. It is a good practice book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practice, practice
This book is great for practice strips! The only way to learn rhythm interpretation is to practice, practice, practice. This book is loaded with strips (and their answers). The content is OK. I didn't like how the author grouped junctional rhythms and heart blocks in the same section, too confusing for the new practitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Combination of different Sciences of Health
This book is one of the best health books I've ever read, no question about it. It combines pretty much every diet fad you've ever heard about into a raw, living food diet.

In this book, Cousens teaches us how to follow the Ayurvedic principles through a 80-90% raw food diet. He also teaches us how to individualize our diets for our metabolic body types. This is one of the only books I know that teaches how to individualize diet for a vegetarian.

The book covers religion, meditation, toxins in our environment, and has a nice living foods recipe section in the back of the book. The nice thing about it, is that with the recipes, he doesn't try to offer dishes that are similiar to those which are cooked. I see a lot of vegetarian recipe books doing that. "Try our delicious all vegan pizza!" and of course, it tastes no better than a branch off of the Maple tree in my back yard. These recipes offer new tastes.

I like a particular section in the book where Cousens tries to explain the logic behind why people think he looks much more unhealthy now than when he did when he was a bulky college football player. We live in such an obesce society, that someone of a healthy weight appears too slim, or unhealthy. Because Cousens doesn't have a pot belly, and sagging male breasts, many people say he looks "thin and puny". This book teaches us that through living foods, we can sculpt and shape our bodies pretty much any way we'd like. He chooses not to be muscular anymore, because he feels he has no need for 30 extra pounds of muscle. Steven Arlin on the other hand, is 230 lbs, and likes to feel big and strong.

All in all, this book takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of raw, living foods. It could change your way of thinking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information
Gabriel Cousens is a trained physician who operates the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Arizona. I remember reading the first edition of "Conscious Eating" years ago. It was one of the first vegetarian books I read, and one that influenced me deeply. Gabriel explores food and its relation to health taking in consideration its effects on different levels: physical, mental, and spiritual, as well as each person's individuality. Gabriel Cousens tries to "Individualize the Diet" instead of saying that there is one diet ideal for everyone. I was more enthusiastic about these ideas when I first revised this book, but now I am not so impressed by all these theories anymore. Dr. Cousens has adapted the Indian health system of Ayurveda to vegan, raw food nutrition. The chapter on vitamin B-12 will be of great interest to all vegans and raw-foodists. Doubts about a vegetarian diets are dispelled. The part on Vegetarianism in world religions, and also the vegetarianism of Jesus are also fascinating chapters included in this part of the book. Part three is titled: "Transition to Vegetarianism," but is also about transition to living foods and the reasons behind such a diet. Gabriel outlines the best way to make this transition as easy as possible. The transition is in four stages, from a meat and dairy based diet to a vegan, raw food diet. The final stage of 95% living foods, a difficult step for most people that can be made easier understanding the psychology behind it. "Stage Four diet is more intense and more likely to be successful for those who are mature and balanced in all areas of their lives. For most people, it requires several years of experience and self-experimentation to become balanced and grounded with the full life-force power of this diet." Other chapters of interest in this part include information on pesticides in our food, and a list of the most sprayed fruits and vegetables. The book also contain many raw-food recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful, fact-filled, "user friendly" guide
Written by holistic medical doctor, psychiatrist, family therapist, and licensed homeopathic physician Gabriel Cousens, Conscious Eating is a health-centered eating and nutrition guide that carefully walks readers through individualizing their individual food choices based upon the needs of their bodies (including the option of vegetarianism and making the sometimes difficult transition to a vegetarian diet), as well as numerous and invaluable "tips, tricks, and techniques" with respect to food preparation, and so much more, Conscious Eating is an insightful, fact-filled, "user friendly" guide to improving dietary habits straight away. A number of healthy recipes embellish this worthy 850-page reference, yet its primary focus is information accessible to non-specialist general readers concerning overall nutritional improvement rather than just another compendium of specific dishes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Totally changed my perspective on food
I bought this book because I wanted to become a better vegetarian/vegan and gain a healthier attitude toward self-nourishing (without giving up coffee and chocolate!). I found the analysis sections extremely eye-opening, and learned that the high-carb vegan diet I was having such trouble sticking to is not at all suited to my body/metabolism. I've made some real shifts in my diet based on this book, especially including both more protein and more raw foods, and have a lot more focus and energy now.

I highly recommend this book, especially for people who want to move further toward or into vegetarianism. It will help a lot with that transition and guide you to finetuning what you eat to suit your metabolic needs. It will also change your perspective and understanding of food and how it affects mind, body, and spirit.

Unfortunately, some of the information is a little confusing: I couldn't always figure out how to apply or use what I'd learned. And while I personally agree about the spiritual dimensions of diet, others may find that focus (especially in the beginning of the book) a little too strong. I think Dr. Cousens would have done better to shift that focus to the second half, so he could gradually build up to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Digest this book!!
In a world that is becoming so conscious of the word conscious I am glad that Dr. Cousens got to this title first. This book is wonderful. It is filled with many truths about many different things mostly to do with food, digestion, and health. This book is also very powerful for it enlightens and empowers poeple. It empowers people to challenge their own diets, and to see what the perfect diet is for humans. It gives you a lot of support in getting there to or atleast keeping your eyes on the goal. Dr. Cousens fills this book with lots of interesting points and observations.
It is perfect for all people interested in the human diet. It is perfect for all raw foodists both strict and loose as well as anybody even interested in the Raw foods movement or philosophy. This book can be enjoyed in many ways. You could simply flip around with, and read here and there or to study. It is also a very interesting, and fullfilling read for Vegetarians, and vegans as well as anyone interested in Vegetarianism. I especially enjoyed the Chapters that point to vegetarianism in each of the World's largest religions. I really enjoyed the speculation about Jesus and his links to Vegetarianism as well as Christianity in total. I found the book worth the price for these chapters alone.
I should mention also that I am a Raw foodist Vegan with about 80% of my diet being Raw. I enjoy the recipes in this book as well as the guidance in preparation and storage. I was only a Vegan when I stumbled up on this book and after studying it for a while I decided to give it a try and with the nice results that I felt I decided that it was true and to keep with it. I loan this book out a lot and I find that various different types of poeple find it equally interesting and informitive. There is something in this book for everyone from the guilty meat eater to the hard core vegan raw foodist. I enjoy having this book around to look through and to reference with. This is without a doubt the best book that I have read on nutrition, and diet not to mention Raw foods as well. ... Read more

The original Fitness for Dummies, published in 1996, was a real breakthrough: a book that took a reader through all the fitness basics without being offputtingly complicated or insultingly simplistic. This second edition only improves on that tough balancing act.

The authors are two of the most experienced fitness writers in the business--Suzanne Schlosberg is a longtime contributor to Shape and Liz Neporent is a veteran personal trainer, corporate fitness consultant, and contributor to Shape and The New York Times. In addition to being experienced at explaining exercise, they're both exercise junkies, and their firsthand knowledge and love of the topic is evident throughout.

Each section of the book--whether dealing with basic fitness issues, cardiovascular training, strength training, flexibility, joining a gym, or exercising at home--offers a combination of well-researched, easily understandable information, combined with informed opinion. For example, in chapters discussing exercise equipment, they're able to offer personal reactions to the gear--mentioning that Life Fitness makes great exercise bikes but a treadmill they don't care for.

New information in this second edition includes "100 Reasons to Break a Sweat," featuring the latest research on exercise benefits; sections incorporating Internet fitness resources; and beefed-up exercise-video advice. That latter section includes tips about avoiding rip-offs (older videos are sometimes repackaged, with new covers promising different benefits) and a handy guide to choosing the best video instructors for different fitness levels.

The core information, though, is the best reason to buy this edition of Fitness for Dummies. Exercise science is complicated, but this book makes it as simple--and entertaining--as it can possibly be. --Lou Schuler ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let's Get Moving!
If you've been rather inactive in the recent past, this book will help you to get moving. It not only helped me to plan a well-rounded fitness program, but it really helped me to get motivated. The writing is clear and simple, and the authors do a good job at cutting through the jargon fog and giving you the essentials. and, of course, there's that "For Dummies" humor throughout. Best of all, it's cheaper than a personal trainer. In fact, if you need a personal trainer, this book has great advice on chooding a trainer that's right for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exemplary fitness book
If only all Dummies books were as good as this one. Extremely well-written with the most clear language one could ever hope for. Full of anecdotes, definitions, and plenty of myth busters. The personalization from the authors gets tiring ("Suzanne thinks that...", "Liz's grandmother once..."), but it is tolerable. Many, many aspects of fitness are covered in remarkable thoroughness. General weight lifting (both at home and the gym), supplements, gym etiquette, trainer tips, aerobic machines and classes, and fitness video buying are all covered with impressive detail. (If buying this book used, be sure to get the 2nd edition as it covers many topics that didn't exist with the first edition: Pilates, Physio balls, elliptical trainers, Bikram Yoga, and more.)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best beginner fitness book.
I've read several beginner fitness books and I feel this is the most complete and best organized of them all. This has gotten me motivated and started on the right fitness program for me (I've since confirmed with a personal trainer). Honest and accurate fitness information is laid out in an easily understood way (without any questionable product endorsements). No "summary" style book is going to have everything, but they have enough information that you feel like everything else is fine tuning.

To address the concerns of another reviewer, the 2nd edition of this book does discuss common fitness injuries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Idiots 4, Dummies 3
I need an intro book on fitness that covers all the basis well, and in the bookstore it quickly came down to the Dummies book vs. the Idiots.

Similar quality contents on both sides, and the Dummies has a cleaner layout. But I ultimately chose the Idiots for the following reasons:

* The Idiots has a whole chapter on Martial Arts, where Dummies has no coverage at all. It also goes over jazz and a few other dance forms. This is very important to me as I consider the usual machine-based workout too soulless.

* I did not notice this myself, but the editorial pointed out a very important area - how to prevent injuries. The topic is not addressed in the Dummies as far as I can tell from the online TOC.

2-0 out of 5 stars AKA "Fitness-Related Consumerism for Dummies"
These authors love to shop as much as they love to exercise.

As a fitness neophyte, I turned once again to the Dummies series for its comprehensive, unbiased coverage of broad topics. What disappointed me about this selection is its enthusiasm for expensive gadgetry, club memberships, and professional consultation.

Admittedly, a healthy lifestyle isn't without a price tag, but this is ridiculous. In almost every chapter of this book (including a couple devoted entirely to the subject), you can expect to find one or more words of advice encouraging the reader to go shell out some more dough for one thing or another - a heart monitor, a personal trainer, a water pack, a dietician, a special mat for stretching exercises, etc. If you bought every item they recommended throughout the course of this book, you'd spend a full year's salary and fill a bedroom with all your new junk!

While they do advise against some of the more foolish purchases, such as those fat-zapping electrodes sold on infomercials, they spend little time extolling the virtues of those invaluable exercises you can do for free - stair walking, push ups, pull ups, etc. The chapter on exercising at home is a veritable catalog of the fanciest equipment money can buy, rather than suggestions of exercises you can do on a bare floor with your own body weight.

The authors also go a little skimpy on such topics as nutrition and weight training, but make darn sure to point you in the direction of other related titles in the "for Dummies" series.

If you generally like the Dummies books, do a little more shopping before you put your faith in this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Presicion through simplicity
As an individual unfamiliar with the nuances of AS, I found "My Social Stories Book" particularly effective in identifying, conveying and demystifying what is mundane for most people, but what can be overwhelming for those with AS. Sean McAndrew's brilliant translation of the text via child-friendly illustrations relevant to their respective scenarios are what make a publication like this one truly work. Much like crosswalk symbols, these illustrations must be absolutely simplistic in order to be unmistakeably understood. Much respect to McAndrew who rendered the abstract idea of divorce in such tender illustrative grace.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book to buy and read and take with you to your doctor
I found this book to contain the most comprehensive, informatative compilation of facts about brain tumors that has been written to date. Ben Williams not only has tirelessly researched this subject, but he has LIVED this first-hand. This gives him an insight that is unsurpassed in it's ability to convey this information. I have been reading everything possible for over two years about brain tumors and treatments, ever since my brother was diagnosed with the same type tumor as Ben's. Ben has really taken his professional abilities as a medical researcher and applied it to the area of cancer treatment, the medical issues involved with treatments, clinical trials, and all the related factors. This book is a must for anyone that knows someone that is battling cancer....not just brain cancer, but due to Ben's insightful treatment of the relevant issues, anyone that is facing a life-threatening diagnosis should read this book. It explains the "whys" of how our medical system works, and doesn't work. It will give you the power to be able to ask the "right" questions. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking answers and hope facing a terminal diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guerilla Warfare Against Cancer
A terminal cancer diagnosis is a shove through the looking glass into a terrifying alternate reality of imminent death, where medical science has no answers and clinical trials and alternative medicine offer fleeting glimpses of real or perceived hope. This is the experience of millions of people every year, who find they suddenly must trust doctors they have never met to make the best choices for them according to principals of science and the Hippocratic Oath. Seven years ago, Ben Williams heard perhaps the worst of all such diagnoses, Glioblastoma Multiforme. This fast-moving brain cancer carries a devastating prognosis where survival is measured in weeks and where approved treatments add only a few weeks more. In his battle with this ferocious disease, he left the established path to fight on his own terms, mixing conventional, experimental, and alternative medicine. His eventual recovery, and the lessons he learned, are the basis for this book.

'Surviving Terminal Cancer' is written in three sections. Section I is a narrative of the onset, diagnosis, treatment, and eventual remission of the author's own terminal disease. This section includes the bizarre initial symptoms of his brain tumor, and the emotional upheaval of the diagnosis and devastating prognosis. During the treatment course, Williams must struggle with a medical system that denies him obvious treatments; he confronts his doctors and travels to Mexico to obtain the drugs they refuse to prescribe. His treatment plan is a drug cocktail synthesized from his research into clinical trials and other published experimentation. A brain tumor proves intriguing subject matter, as fascinating as it is horrifying, and this creates a charged backdrop for the section's already interesting storyline. It is an MRI-to-MRI clinical suspense thriller, superimposed onto a very human drama of husband and wife coping with fear and mortality. Ultimately, Williams survives this Nietzschen transformation to complete the book. The resulting Section II delivers a scathing, if constructive, criticism of the American medical system and the FDA. Although well-meaning, this section may disturb many readers as it addresses the basic assumption of trust between doctor and patient. Williams pulls no punches, arguing against the statistical methods mandated by the FDA, the funding and motives behind drug trials, and even the present interpretation of the Hippocratic Oath. He turns the very notion of conservative, scientific medicine on its ear as fundamentally unscientific and irrational. With chapters like 'Bastille Day for Cancer Patients,' Williams handles this subject as brazenly as his self-medicated treatment plan in Section I. The theme of a deeply broken system culminates with a call for cancer patients to fix it themselves through direct political action. Section III is a useful summary of alternative medicine, supplements, and clinical trials, and how to effectively research all such options for any particular disease. Although there are a few specific options listed, this section is not a definitive dictionary of treatments. Rather, it is a discussion on how to effectively investigate potential treatments both within and outside of traditional medicine. Through a few carefully picked examples, he illustrates how to find and identify useful information and separate it from advertising and political rhetoric.

Despite the complexity of much of the subject matter, the style is a well-explained, easy to follow prose. Williams uses AIDS as a useful point of epidemiological reference, comparing cancer to HIV on both microbiological and socio-political levels. Perhaps welcoming the inevitable criticism, he carefully includes supporting references at the end of every chapter. Locating these supporting articles in many cases leads to very interesting, and applicable, secondary reading. Williams is even-handed in his treatment of the facts, carefully addressing several perilous topics that could easily have degraded into sour grapes. He carefully draws a distinction between doctors as individuals, for whom he holds obvious respect, and a troubled medical system as a whole. Perhaps most importantly, Williams, a Harvard-educated scientist, does not fall into the trap of arguing 'alternative versus traditional' medicine. Instead, he takes traditional, alternative, and experimental medicine, as well as some of their related, rhetorical arguments, and examines them together under uniform scientific scrutiny.

The concepts in section II are universal in their appeal, but the book as a whole best serves those presently facing cancer or similar deadly conditions. Williams' work is a departure from earlier (and excellent) inspirational works by Armstrong and others, in that it provides the reader specific detail on how to use the basic principals of science and statistics to wage war against their disease. Williams is far too sophisticated to simply preach a particular treatment regimen because it worked for him. He does not promise a cure or offer unreasonable hope. What he does deliver is the means for patients to understand their situation and fight for their own survival, exploring the statistical fringes of their condition to come up with the additional few percentage points that might determine life or death. It is controversial, alarming, and blunt. It is also an excellent book -- required reading for anyone facing a deadly disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Story, Terrific Book
This book tells a dramatic story of a battle for survival against a dread disease, and also offers a useful guide for cancer patients determined to try to beat the odds. On top of that, the author delivers a scathing critique of the conventional approach to treatment of life-threatening illness in the US. The book starts off with the author's story: a psychology professor at the University of California, Williams was diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable brain tumor (glioblastoma). Refusing to accept his imminent demise, he launched an unconventional (but nonetheless science-based) fight for survival. Searching the biomedical literature, he was surprised to uncover many studies describing relatively nontoxic compounds -- some of them drugs approved for other purposes - which seemed to show at least modest tumor-fighting effects (based on preliminary data, often involving animal models). By traveling to Mexico and other means, Williams was able to put together a cocktail of such compounds that he took on top of the conventional treatments (which normally achieve at most a minor and transient effect with glioblastoma). MRIs showed the tumor at first shrinking and then disappearing completely, and Williams has had no recurrence in more than five years. The book describes Williams' cocktail, which may be of use to other patients with similar brain tumors. Of equal value, however, is the general approach described in the book, which could be adapted to fight other kinds of cancer as well. The basic idea seems almost obvious: when conventional treatments are unlikely to succeed, combine everything that is reasonably nontoxic and seems (based on however preliminary data) to have a decent chance of some efficacy. Any intelligent person can see the good sense in this (if you are going to die anyway, why on earth would you NOT want to try any nontoxic treatment that has some chance of helping?), but Williams describes the stubbornly hostile reaction of oncologists to his approach. He describes how academic physicians prefer to corral patients into unimaginative trials of single-agent therapies for which even the doctors themselves entertain little optimism (except perhaps for the publication they hope to add to their CV). Experience with AIDS and the few kinds of cancer now considered curable suggests that dramatic results usually occur only when multiple agents are combined to obtain a synergistic effect. Yet the oncology profession sees it as somehow more "scientific" to test drugs in isolation (or occasionally to combine two agents only after each has been thoroughly tested by itself). The book harshly criticizes the role the FDA has played in promoting this approach, which may be rational for ulcer or arthritis therapy but is obviously inappropriate for the therapy of terminal diseases. In summary, this book combines three ingredients in a unique way: a personal survival story, a roadmap, and a devastating intellectual critique of the status quo in cancer treatment. Well written and thoughtful, this book should be of great value to many readers, including those struggling with cancer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great compendium of cancer resources
After having spent weeks performing exhaustive research on cancer treatments, this book was as godsend: it describes the important cancer treatments, explains the disease, and has hundreds of references for treatment or information. The book has close to a thousand pages of well researched, well written information. It provided delightful, informative reading for weeks, as well as pointing us to a naturopath and oncologist for treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book about alternative cancer treatments
A wonderful reference book to have for those who are looking for cancer treatments other than surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for themselves or for their loved ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable wealth of info!
With a working diagnosis of advanced ovarian cancer, this book gave me HOPE and DIRECTION. Statistics say: One in two men and one in three women will face cancer. IF POSSIBLE, be prepared in advance to know what course you would take. BUT, if you or a loved one are diagnosed with cancer, have courage! There are MANY choices BESIDES surgery, radiation and chemo. Better choices! This enormous book will educate you.

Don't miss the AMAS test on pages 702-705: an accurate blood test that can detect ANY cancer up to 19 months BEFORE conventional medical tests for cancer can find it! This test gave me GREAT PEACE of MIND as it ruled OUT cancer for me before my surgery to remove a grapefruit-sized endometrioma (NON-malignant). Praise the LORD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge IS Power
Im a 33 year old young woman, who was diagnosed with advance local breast cancer 5 months ago today (24 May 2001, date of diagnosis). I was fortunate enough to have a close friend in the US who know of this book, due to working with one of the doctors who are published.

This book has become my Bible and has literaly saved my life. Im sitting here tonight in the wee hours of the night to let you know that today I have no turmors and am living cancer free. Five months ago I have 4 tumors all at approx 4cm each, today they are all gone, by the grace of God and his direction led me to this book which in turn gave me the information, the wisdom and guaidence to get through this tragic disease that so many people, possibly thousands world wide die from.

God Bless the all those who contributed to the truth about cancer. I thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars How you can understand cancer and prevent or reverse it
This massive (1116 pages) book is published by the editor of the magazine 'Alternative Medicine.' The first section consists of richly detailed accounts of the successful cancer treatment plans of 23 respected alternative physicians from Robert C Atkins to Charles B Simone. Part 2 is a fundamental explanation of the nature, causes, politics and prevention of cancer. I have never read a better 225 pages on the subject. When you come closer to understanding the conditions that precede cancer you are empowered to change those conditions and assume control over your own body. The final section presents alternative therapies one by one from nutrition, botanicals, and metabolic factors to physical and energy support therapies ranging from ozone and thermal (infrared heat) to acupunture and magnetic. In all, a finely-written explanation of a life-and-death topic meant for those who have cancer, their friends and families who refuse to give up and, who knows?, maybe even your doctor! This is a book I run to every time an acquaintance is diagnosed. I learn about the specifics of their condition and the hope that exists beyond the conventional. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all educators of children with PDD
This book provides clear, easy to use strategies for teaching and communicating with children on the autism spectrum. The author's contend that behavioral problems exhibited by children with autism are most often the result of frustration that comes from their inability to communicate effectively. Behavioral problems can be successfuly addressed by focusing on what the child is trying to communicate. Rationale for the strategies suggested is provided. I recommend this book for educators and parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to implement methods for enhancing play skills
There are so many books on autism and not all are applicable to our family's situation. I tend to read a library copy before purchasing. When it came time to return this book, I decided that this was one for our personal library. It's easy to read and I will refer to it over and over. Methods are easy to understand and implement. As a parent of an autistic child, it's one of the few books I've felt that will be invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for anyone working with children with autism
This book is a wonderful resource for learning how to approach children with autism. It is very easy to read and deals with a variety of different methods that can be used to deal with just about any level on the autistic spectrum. As a speech therapist working with variety of children with autism, I continually return to this resource to help plan my assessments and intervention. It is an excellent resource that addresses communication, play, pragmatics, parent desires, and self-control at a variety of levels. The chapters that deal with specific areas, such as enhancing social communicative interactions, often provide you with the necessary paperwork for assessment and/or intervention in the appendix. This is a must buy book! I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with children with autism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful book if you are working with a child with Autism
This is the best book to own if you are working with a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder(ASD). It is amazing how much the editors fit into this little book. The overall philosophy of the book is towards an eclectic approach to ASD. It presents many different ideas from different people, all of which could be added to a program, method, approach for a particular child. If you are dogmatic about one method, this is not the book for you. The book starts out with several chapters looking into what we know about autism, a Temple Grandin chapter on what it is like to have autism and a Charles Hart chapter on what parents want (required reading for educators!). Then there are chapters on enhancing communication in nonverbal children, echolalic, and verbal children. These chapter are by Prizant, Rydell, Twachtman . Then there are a bunch of chapters on strategies for social stuff. Carol Gray wrote one chapter on social stories. This book is readable, full of ideas. I hope the authors plan to keep the book fresh with a new edition in a few years. As a parent of a child with ASD, I own two copies, and lend out the second to others who work with my son. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. I also recommend Key Facts of Anatomy and Physiology isbn;0971999694. This last book shows you what's important to study for. Both books highly recommended.
