Book Description

Getting In: How Not To Apply to Medical School is a tough, practical guide for people storming the ramparts of medical school admission boards. Paul Jung takes the pre-med or second-career aspirant from pre-application experiences through the application process with a very practical approach. The book is filled with the pitfalls and misconceptions applicants frequently make, rendering the subtitle particularly apt and (for those terrified of the unknowns) eminently appealing. The volume also includes self-diagnostic sections and common pitfalls to avoid when applying to medical school.Contrary to popular belief, applying to medical school doesn’t have to be stressful and time-consuming. Getting In shows students caught in the web of medical school admissions boards how to apply to medical school the right way—setting themselves apart from the rest of the crowd. Jung takes pre-med and second-career aspirants through the entire ordeal and lets them know how important it is to apply as early as possible. From preparation and finding ways to obtain an application noticed by the admissions committee to information on the MCAT and getting through common interview traps, the book gives inside tips and helps applicants through what can be a stressful and uncertain time. The author allows readers a glimpse into common errors that others have made in their quests for acceptance, such as taking all required science courses in one semester or leaving large chunks of a medical application blank. Taking a down-to-earth, realistic approach, Jung acknowledges the pitfalls and misconceptions frequently made by applicants and even provides alternative solutions for discouraged students. The result is a well-written book that describes hardships and blunders but also gives good, practical information on how to succeed. ... Read more

Book Description

What forces lead to changes in governance among medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals? To what extent do such changes affect how well those schools and hospitals do their work? In this book, John A. Kastor, M.D., focuses on the academic medical centers of the University of Pennsylvania and the Johns Hopkins University, two institutions that underwent dramatic change in governance during the late 1990s.

Drawing on extensive interviews with more than three hundred administrators, physicians, and other medical professionals at Penn, Hopkins, and elsewhere, Kastor identifies the factors that influenced changes in governance at these two institutions. Chief among these, he finds, are structure, personality conflicts, and current events. This book will be of interest to administrators of teaching hospitals as well as professionals in health policy and management. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information source for to-be medical students!
Great book! Full of information worth knowing if you really want to go to a medical school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK TO USE!!
This book has got EVERYTHING you want to know about medical schools. It gives different perspectives on how to choose the RIGHT medical schools, WHAT the medical schools want and dont' want...if YOU are making the right decision. I will recommend this book to anyone who is serious about getting into medical school. I think it is the ONLY book you need to get the WHOLE pic about the medical application process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful book
I found this book to be very useful, especially the areas dealing with coursework and activities important in helping you get admitted. Dr. Goliszek's book is making its rounds at school. I've gone through other medical school books, but this one seems to have everything I need.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless if you're intelligent or non-traditional
This book has incredible insights like "manage your time effectively" and "choose a quiet place to study." Also it's totally aimed at people who knew at the age of 15 that they wanted to be doctors. It has nothing to say to vaguely non-traditional students -- people who are coming to medicine after being out of college a few years, or not being science majors, or even just in their last few years of college.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was an over good book
I thought it was a decent book, it offers alot of the basic information that someone would need to know when applying. I was looking for some more "insider secrets", but it really didn't have a ton of them. ... Read more

Book Description

A fascinating exploration of the medical student's most decisive course -- gross anatomy -- and of the intellectual, emotional and spiritual transformation that turns young men and women into doctors

Medical Gross and Developmental Anatomy is a course every medical student dreads. As one future physician told the author, Steve Giegerich, passing the notoriously difficult course is "paying your dues for medicine. It's the bridge you have to cross if you want to become a doctor."

More students leave medical school during this course than any other. Now Body of Knowledge puts readers in the classroom as potential doctors come face-to-face with their first human cadaver and dissects the factors that determine whether they succeed or fail.

In January 1999, 181 students at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark, began a course in gross anatomy. Among them were Sherry Ikalowych, a former nurse and mother of four; Jennifer Hannum, an ultracompetitive jock; Udele Tagoe, a determined Duke graduate of Ghanian descent; and Ivan Gonzalez, a Nicaraguan refugee and unlikely medical student. For these four lab partners, Tom Lewis, the cadaver lying on the stainless steel table, remains anonymous during dissection; but for the reader, Lewis springs to life. As the students grapple with love, hate, power and awe, Giegerich explores Lewis's life and his generous decision to donate his body to science. Ultimately, as the students gain reverence for medicine, they too develop gratitude for Lewis's thoughtful gift. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sir...I know gross anatomy....sir, you're no anatomist.
Body of Knowledge is a clever book; clever in the sense that it interweaves different stories with a common thread -- that being the art and science of Gross Anatomy. The reader is introduced to the students, teachers, staff, and most importantly, the man who would become the specimen, or more fittingly, the body of knowledge. It is certainly replete with several variations of the same theme: the unselfish act of sharing one's body to enrich one's mind. In exploring this theme, it is apparent that the author's aim is to show the reader how the simple act of dissecting flesh and bone can unlock the life history of the deceased. In doing so, the students are reminded that what is now a specimen was once a man who had lived, loved, laughed, cried, celebrated, and suffered...essentially, the man had been resurrected.
However, the theme does grow repetitive and tiresome after the first three chapters, and I often felt as though the author tried too hard to spell out what is inherently obvious to me as the reader. All in all, the book is a nice read, though very dry at times. The writing can be clumsy, and the transition from one story to another often does not flow smoothly. The author could have spared the reader of delving unnecessarily into the backgrounds of each student, especially since the book is really not about them. There are some inaccuracies in the book, as well. Aside from misusing medical terminology, the author mentions that dental students only study the head and neck during gross anatomy. I tutored both medical and dental students at this very same institution, and I can state with utmost confidence that dental students do indeed study, and are well-versed in, the territory below the neck. In addition, the author has lessened the role of some of the more impressive professors at the expense of glorifying those who are not so impressive.
All in all, it's a good starter book for anyone interested in the art and science of death. It's often given as a gift to matriculating medical students by their respective institutions during the illustrious white-coat ceremony. If you can find a med student who has the book, just borrow it from him. Chances are he hasn't read it anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biography of a Cadaver
Steve Giegerich has written a book about a subject matter not only fascinating and mysterious but for some bordering on the gruesome and macabre. He takes us along with four first year medical students as they journey through the Medical Gross and Developmental Anatomy course and lab at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, Newark.

The book focuses on the four students who work at the same lab table and upon Lewis, the cadaver they have been provided to dissect. Despite the difficulty of learning to identify tissues, organs, veins and nerves, muscles and bones, they must also overcome their innate fear and resistance to dissect a fellow human. To make it easier for them, the identity of the cadaver isn't given to the students. However, readers are introduced to Lewis and learn about his life and personality and the human qualities and characteristics that made him unique and special, more than merely a lab subject. Even though the students don't know the specifics about Lewis, most seem to develop a profound respect for the person who has been so generous by donating his body to science. In fact, by the end of the semester, each student has developed a personal relationship and enduring memories of their experiences with Lewis, culminating in a formalized good-bye to this special person.

For the reader, this unique book provides insight into the rigors of medical school and creates a different perspective on the meaning of "donating your body to science". It also traces the origins and history of dissection and of the illustrations used in the ATLAS OF HUMAN ANATOMY and GRANT'S DISSECTOR. Most importantly, BODY OF KNOWLEDGE helps the reader gain an understanding and respect for the generous people who donate their bodies so others can learn. For those reasons this book is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review
This book contains the germ of a good idea - to follow the adventures of four medical students during their gross anatomy class. The medical information contained in the book is most interesting.

However, the clunky, pedantic style of the writing together with the many unexplained technical terms used (sometimes erroneously), make reading this book a tiring experience. The author clearly needs more editorial assistance and creative writing experience in order to lighten the tone of the book and to make it less boring. Right now it is about as exciting to read as a trust deed for an irregularly shaped piece of farmland.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I found this book so interesting. I could not put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
I have to confess that I originally picked up this book to satisfy an intrinsically human morbid fascination with death, and what happens to bodies afterward. In the end, this book did much more than that.

BODY OF KNOWLEDGE records the myriad of emotions experienced by four main characters, all first-year medical students at the New Jersey Medical School, as they struggle through the notoriously difficult course mandatory for all aspiring physicians, Gross Anatomy. These four students were assigned to each other as lab partners throughout the entire course, sharing one cadaver to work on. Although the identity of the cadaver remained anonymous to the students, Giegerich gives us an important glimpse into the life of the person who chose to donate his body to science, helping the readers know him as much more than just a science project.

Having no involvement with the medical profession, this book allowed me a rare glimpse into the trials and tribulations faced by would-be doctors as they slave through medical school's toughest course. It also demystified the medical profession, enabling me to see physicians as people who are not so different from you and me save for their extra knowledge of the workings of the human body. For those who have dreams of going to medical school someday, this book also provides great encouragement when you discover the obstacles faced by the various characters prior to being accepted into NJMS.

Most importantly, after reading this book, I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who have willed their bodies to science, so that future generations may benefit from the knowledge gained. Considering all the things done to their bodies in a gross anatomy lab, being a donor is, in the words of one of the characters in the book, the ultimate "selfless act". ... Read more

Book Description

In the tradition of Abraham Verghese and Atul Gawande, a gripping memoir of learning medicine in the trenches

Singular Intimacies is the story ofbecoming a doctor by immersion at Bellevue Hospital, the oldest public hospital in the country—and perhaps the most legendary. It is both the classic inner-city hospital and a unique amalgam of history, insanity, beauty, and intellect. When Danielle Ofri enters these 250-year-old doors as a tentative medical student, she is immediately plunged into the teeming world of urban medicine: mysterious illnesses, life-and-death decisions, patients speaking any one of a dozen languages, overworked interns devising creative
strategies to cope with the feverish intensity of a big-city hospital.

Yet the emphasis of Singular Intimacies is not so much on the arduous hours in medical training (which certainly exist here), but on the evolution of an instinct for healing. In a hospital without the luxury of private physicians, where patients lack resources both financial and societal, where poverty and social strife are as much a part of the pathology as any microbe, it is the medical students and interns who are thrust into the searing intimacy that is the doctor-patient relationship. In each memorable chapter, Ofri"s progress toward becoming an experienced healer introduces not just a patient in medical crisis, but a human being with an intricate and compelling history. Ofri learns to navigate the tangled vulnerabilities of doctor and patient, not simply battle the disease.

Dr. Danielle Ofri is an attending physician in the medical clinic at Bellevue, with an academic appointment at NYU. She is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Bellevue Literary Review, and her essays have been published in over a dozen literary and medical journals; one chapter of this book was selected by Stephen Jay Gould for The Best American Essays of 2002 and received the Missouri Review Editor"s Prize for Nonfiction. She is also associate chief editor of the award-winning textbook The Bellevue Guide to Outpatient Medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfully written and compelling
With wry humor, grace, honesty, and intelligence, Danielle Ofri takes us into the bewildering world of medical training from a doctor's point of view. Though many of her experiences will be familiar to anyone in medicine, what sets this book apart is the deftness and fidelity with which those experiences are rendered. For the medical and non-medical reader alike, I couldn't recommend it more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong Writing and Great Stories
Singular Intimacies

If you have ever wondered what medical training is like, if you have ever fantasized about becoming a doctor, or if you just love strong writing and great stories, this is a book for you.

Singular Intimacies takes us inside the emotional and intellectual heart of a doctor as she makes her journey from medical student to resident physician during her training at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. As a physician and poet who learned to practice medicine at similar inner-city hospitals, I can assure any reader that Dr. Ofri's descriptions of the clinical situations she encounters (including the array of patients, diagnostic dilemmas, clinical conversations, and moments of genuine love and exhilaration), all ring true for me: patients recover unexpectedly from what seem to be fatal illnesses; they die without warning and without having an accurate diagnosis; and they laugh, bleed, masturbate, cooperate, and act up in every imaginable (and unimaginable) way. Through all these experiences, Dr. Ofri shares her own personal responses which vary from her sense of pride when she begins to experience a sense of mastery, to moments of intense anxiety and despair. I found myself re-experiencing my own excitement, fear, and sleep-deprivation, only this time with a compassionate guide, one who is strong enough to let herself laugh at gallows humor, and also be vulnerable enough to cry in the arms of a priest as the patient's family watches. And I celebrated when Dr. Ofri finally finished her training , bruised and calloused, but with the compassionate heart and voice of a healer.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the heart and from the mind
This is not a book to take lightly. This is a book about real people, with real problems. This is a book written by a doctor who takes nothing about what she does lightly.
Dr. Ofri takes the sacred--a person and his/her life--and offers us a glimpse into the patient's world and the doctor's world in a poetic, gorgeous book that offers us both rare insight about ourselves and insight about human beings in general.
Each essay describes a moment in time, a look at Dr. Ofri's residency at Bellevue Hospital, a glimpse of one or more of her patients, and a glance toward the human condition and how it can be both transformational and devasting.
Dr. Ofri takes the mundane--an alcoholic arriving in the ER from too much imbibing--and transforms the story into one that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
I am not a doctor, I am not a scientist. I am an ordinary person who will never again look ordinarily at any person whether I see them in a hospital bed or posted as a missing person on a flyer.
Perhaps what sets Dr. Ofri apart is that she is a doctor, a wife, a mother. But I hope not. I hope that every doctor could aspire to having access to both sides of his/her brain, to show emotion and to offer solace in a way that Dr. Ofri has.
This is a must read for anyone in the medical field and a must read for anyone who aspires to have a deeper connection in any relationship with any person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I have read many "becoming a doctor" books and some are interesting but are written by people who have no business writing a book! This one was definitely an exception. The author was a wonderful writer and the book was delightful. A definite must-read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Singular view of the march through medical school and beyond
This is an interesting book and it certainly held my attention. But it was not especially enjoyable to read; at the time it came into my hands, a friend who was seriously ill was being treated at a teaching hospital. Those who prefer not to know too much about the white coats and their training (which is certainly being conducted on patients at teaching hospitals) may want to avoid this book.

That said, some of the stories about patients are pretty eye opening, as well. The human personality is remarkably fixed; a dirty old man who has probably made women miserable all his life will persist, even at death's portal. Some of these stories demonstrate the sad human drama caused by bone-deep denial; others show the amazing aspect of the creative, healing interaction between patient and physician. ... Read more

This is a wonderful text for students in the entry level of nursing. However, many skills listed in the text are missing information or have conflicting information from the hardcover text also published by Delmar. 5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read before starting your clinical clerkships!
Most Junior Medical Students (JMS's) feel intimidated when they begin their clinical year of medical school. You wanna learn how to cope up with this stress? Then buy this pocketbook !
Even though I bought it from Dalhousie University (Halifax) at the end of my junior clinical year, yet it was of great help to me later.

This pocketbook explores the world of the hospital, the role of each member, and how things are done in terms of writing notes, ordering tests, and performing procedures.

In Chapter 1, it introduces the JMS's to how a hospital works: (Outpatient vs. inpatient care, community vs. teaching hospitals, Private & staff patients, Nursing units & specialty services, Physician teams, Getting admitted to the hospital, Night calls, Ward routines from a patient's perspective).

Then the author talks in Chapter 2 about how to do stuff including reviewing a chart, writing orders, medications and prescriptions.

Chapter 3 teaches how to write notes (admission notes, internal medicine daily progress notes, discharge notes, notes for the Surgical care, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Neurology and Psychiatry).

Chapter 4 focuses on procedures, in terms of preparation, introduction to phlebotomy & IV placement, performing venipuncture, taking blood culture, arterial blood gases, ECG, lumbar puncture, NG tube & Dobhoff placement, placing a urinary catheter, and local anesthesia.

Chapter 5 deals with bedside tests including urinalysis and Gram stain.

Finally Chapter 6 teaches JMS's how to organize their data and schedule, and to make a good presentation.

This pocketbook comes in 124 pages, published by Tarascon Press, in its 6th edition, 2001.

The only drawback I found is that chapter 3 is entirely duplicated twice, at least in my copy. Other than that, I strongly recommend this pocketbook for med students before commencing their clinical clerkships.

5-0 out of 5 stars I don't know how I could have survived my clerkships without
This book absolutely made hospital life clear to me in those terrifying first weeks of both my medical and my surgical clerkships. I think every single medical student should buy this book this second!

5-0 out of 5 stars Has broad insights as well as nitty-gritty details
I have had the distinct pleasure of working with the author during medical school at Case Western Reserve University. He is an exceptional person--able to see the big picture as well as the small details. I read and re-read his book (which at that time was not really a book, but more of a packet)before each clerkship and found it to be very reassuring and insightful. I believe he wrote it just after he finished his third year--so it is right on-target for the intended audience.

On a general note, there really is not enough guidance for medical students as they struggle through the clinical years, but this book really does help. Be thankful that Dr. Lederman took the time to write it and publish it.

As a future nursing educator I found this book to be indispensable. Over the past fifteen years of my nursing career, I have been in virtually every nursing educational setting. For this reason I have collected numerous books and nursing resources on the subjects of cognitive processes, learning and teaching techniques. This book by far pulls all the information together, and it will become the most utilized of my collection. The information is laid out in a logical format that starts with the basic concepts, theories, objectives and goals of learning. She then moves on to explain how to prepare and conduct classes. She concludes with the testing and evaluation process. DeYoung takes you gradually through everything you need to know to formulate and conduct a classroom setting that is both stimulating and achieves the goal of educating nurses to become critical thinking, problem-solvers. Her work employs the latest research on learning/education and at the end of every chapter she reinforces learning through case studies, critical thinking exercises and ideas for future research. Any nursing educator within the academic setting or within the clinical area would benefit from this text. She has made the material easy to understand for the beginning educator and advanced enough for the expert. I wish I had had this resource at the start of my career. I absolutely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Parts and Not So Good Parts
Wow, I could've used this one year ago for my first nurse clinical class! This book starts off very promising. It is going to help you grab that elusive thing all teachers want, a class that doesn't put your students in a COMA. The part on learning theory is well explained with examples that pertain to us nurses. There are some basics on the nuts and bolts of instructing a class, again geared towards nursing. Part 2 is where I realize I'm not going to be teacher of the year with this book alone. After switching to patient teaching goals for awhile then we dive into multicultural concepts. I foud the chapter on multiculturalism to be ineffectual and sparse with no real expertise. I wonder why it was included in the book, perhaps it was there to meet an imposed standard. Part 3 is redeeming with some practical and useful ways to turn the learning on in the classroom. This book is useful for a new nurse educator in that she has lots of strategies to choose from with a good base understanding. The experienced instructor caught in the habit of stuffy lecturing can learn new tricks. Overall, this is a good book for beginners and a resource to expand upon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Strategies for Nurse Educators
Nurses are continuously involved in the education of patients, their families, students of nursing, and of one another. Teaching Strategies for Nurse Educators was written as a guide to help nurses learn how to teach effectively. To assist the reader in learning the concepts important in the teaching and learning processes, the author turns to multiple theories of learning which form the basis of understanding why and how people learn. The author notes that to be an effective teacher, a knowledge of educational theory and research, coupled with the desire to learn about teaching methods and the ability to look objectively at ones' teaching style and overall performance is a process which needs to be developed in the individual. The book provides descriptions of several learning theories associated with effectiveness in teaching and learning, and includes discussion of teaching methods and strategies. Each chapter incorporates Case Study, Critical Thinking Exercises and Ideas for Further Research. Developing critical thinking skills in the nursing profession is of paramount importance. The author addresses this issue by defining critical thinking, describes how learning this important skill can be inhibited by improper teaching methods to students in nursing school and offers strategies to enhance these essential skills. The book follows a logical sequence and states points clearly and effectively and stimulates thought on the part of the reader. References are sited throughout the text and listed at the end of each chapter. True to the Nursing Process, the book would not be complete without an evaluation of both the student learner and patient as the recipients of the information taught. Reading this book sparked my interest in education. I found this book to be both informative and stimulating; however, the breadth of topics covered was more than this reader had anticipated. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book to all nurses interested in enhancing their teaching skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Teaching Strategies"- A Resource You Don't Want to Miss.
This book is a wonderful resource for any nurse's library whether or not she is a formal educator. This book proposes to be relevant to all nurses, whatever field they may be working. All nurses teach. DeYoung indirectly acknowledges this simple fact by successfully examining the different facets of teaching and learning, whether it is to our students, our patients, fellow nursing staff members, or to precept new graduates. The book is categorized into three sections that focus on three critical topics in education: Teaching and Learning, The Learner, and Teaching Strategies. DeYoung's 30 years of experience as a nurse educator allows her to creatively weave relevance to all realms of nursing education into each of the three sections. Concluding each chapter are three features that focus relevance to the preceding material: Case Studies, Critical Thinking Exercises and Ideas for Further Research. These features provide the reader a fresh and innovative way of proposing current questions and ethical challenges in the career of nursing today. Any nurse would find these features helpful in stimulating creative and critical thinking within their students, peers and themselves. The intimacies of the book include many examples of how the teacher/learner process is interdependent and a fluid process. It emphasizes the need to continually adapt the educational process to focus on individual learning needs in the classroom as well as in the real world of nursing. This book is a gem for those nurses and educators who no longer wish to accept the statement, "we've been doing it that way for years," as an answer to their questions. It challenges the educator to go beyond the surface and to create a learning environment that rewards research based answers to our questions as well as innovative planning and problem solving for today's nursing practice.

Teaching strategies for nurse educators by Sandra DeYoung
The book was designed to provide a theory base to help nurses teach patients, staff, or students. This book has fourteen chapters divided into three parts: 1. teaching and learning, 2. the learner, and 3. teaching strategies. Part one focuses on good teaching, research and principles for good teaching, learning theories and concepts, and explains how to plan and conduct classes including writing objectives, selecting content and teaching methods, planning assignments and conducting the class. Part two discusses learners, motivation and readiness for learning, multicultural and gender aspects of learning and literacy. Part three presents traditional teaching strategies (lecturing, discussion, questioning, using audiovisuals, and interactive lecture), activity-based teaching strategies (cooperative learning, simulations, problem-based learning, and self-learning modules), computer teaching strategies (computer technology and learning, computer assisted and managed instruction, the Internet, and virtual reality), distance learning (advantages and disadvantages, clinical education, interactive television classes and Internet), teaching psychomotor skills, promoting and assessing critical thinking, clinical teaching, and assessing and evaluating learning. Each chapter has a case study to apply the information, critical thinking exercises, and ideas for future research. The book is well documented, scholarly, and practical. There are tables, figures, chapter divisions, bullets, and numbers to facilitate reading and understanding. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Picture a childhood void of the joyful images and sensations we associate with play--a childhood lacking in curiosity, diversity and symbolic meaning--a childhood without playmates or friends.Children on the autism spectrum are among those who face serious challenges learning how to play in both social and imaginative ways.

But no longer do these children have to remain lost souls on the fringes of playgrounds and other social gathering places. In Peer Play and the Autism Spectrum: The Art of Guiding Children's Socialization and Imagination, Pamela Wolfberg turns her award-winning research into a practical manual for practitioners and caregivers seeking to address the unique and complex challenges children on the autism spectrum experience.

This practical guide offers an introduction to the basic principles, tools and techniques that comprise the Integrated Play Groups model, designed to support children of diverse ages and abilities on the autism spectrum (novice players) in mutual play experiences with typical peers and siblings (expert players). Small groups of children regularly play together under the guidance of an adult facilitator (play guide) through a carefully tailored system of support. The emphasis is on maximizing children's developmental potential as well as intrinsic desire to play, socialize and form meaningful relationships with peers. At the same time, an equally important focus is on teaching the peer group to be more accepting, responsive and inclusive of children who relate and play in different ways. This innovative book is full of forms, checklists and other tools to facilitate implementation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Review
I believe this e-book is a very helpful review. Not only does it give questions and answers, but it also gives rationale with references. I give it 4 stars. The only downfalls are that you cannot print the chapters/pages, and that the answers do not include the question...so if you don't remember the question, then you have to go back to look it up. Overall, it is a very good study guide and I would recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars TOO BASIC
This book was much too basic for my review purposes. Also, the questions in this book do not resemble the questions on the NREMT-P test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely the "Swan Lake" of medical textbooks
I was recommended this book by a former student of Dr. Neal's and after one perusal, I was hooked. It has since become my favorite medical textbook. It is so elegant and enjoyable to read that it is hardly like studying at all. The diagrams are particularly impressive, with each consolidating the equivalent of many wordy pages in the average pharmacology textbook. It is perfect when taking a medical pharmacology course, to be read "first and last" for each topic. If you're a visual learner, this one's for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text.
This is the best medical science text ever written. It is short, concise and diagrams allow a visual synthesis that facilitates learning. The only drawback is occasional British terminology (e.g. Adrenalin is called Epinephrine). It is best while taking pharmacology so that side-effects can be updated for boards. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very usefull, and nice to read
When I started work in an emergency department this book gave me many tips to solve some difficult cases. It is written in a way you can read it for few minutes in between patient visits in your night shift. The readability is high and you never get bored because it fixes every question in few lines (maximum 20 but mostly less than 10).
Obviously it is not really comprehensive, due to the small dimension and the question-response format; but it is sufficient also to study on it for examinations. It requires at least a basic understandig of medicine and it is not interesting for a lay person in many chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a doctor, but...
...I just like to read everything about medicine, because I hope to be a doctor one day. I found this book in the medical library at our university, and I liked it a lot. Compared to any textbook I have ever read, it is very clear and basic, but still covers a lot of information, and has a good balance between the weird trivial information that probably comes up occasionally, but is good to know about when it does, and the basic stuff. Also, some of the doctors who write chapters actually have a sense of humor, which makes the book interesting to read. Check out the chapter about bites and stings by Lee Shockley, which is particularly entertaining.
