5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide to organize medical curriculum change
Six step approach systematically guides the process of problem identification, needs assessment, writing goals and objectives, educational strategies, implementation process, and getting worthwhile evaluation and feedback. Based upon Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine model but substantial utility for all medical disciplines. I will use it in redesigning curriculum at my institution. Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but some bad errors
On page 17, the two formulas for creatinine clearance are wrong. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, on page 18, the reticulocyte index formula isn't accurate because it doesn't factor in the maturation factor. Other than that, this is a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must for the new Intern
This book was a lifesaver for me on many occasions and now as a PGY2 I recommend it to all new incoming PGY1 and even sub-i's. The book covers all of the major "fires" you will encounter and need to "put out" (usually on your own). With this book I found that even though I could call for backup, I rarely needed to because all I needed was right there in the book. The most important advice I can give, though, is to read the book from beginning to end the week just before you start Internship. That is the key! Then just carry it with you as a refresher.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Washington Manual Internship Survival Guide
I highly recommend this book to interns. it covers most of the topics that you may encounter on your internship oncall. it cover the subjects stepwise and you will know what to do next. it is very helpfull if you are alone and nobody around to tell you what to ask or what to order or how to handle the case. it is very easy to use and not time consuming to find a topic fast when you are oncall and time is short.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book
This is one of the best books you will buy as a medical student or intern. It is a requirement for your pocket. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital they give this to all the interns in July. If you know read it a couple times it will make internship easy...except for the 100 hours a week you will put into the job...Honestly...BUY IT- I would have bought it in medical school if I knew about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Internship Must Own

Book Description

While supervising a small group of interns at a major New York medical center, Dr. Robert Marion asked three of them to keep a careful diary over the course of a year. Andy, Mark, and Amy vividly describe their real-life lessons in treating very sick children; confronting child abuse and the awful human impact of the AIDS epidemic; skirting the indifference of the hospital bureaucracy; and overcoming their own fears, insecurities, and constant fatigue. Their stories are harrowing and often funny; their personal triumph is unforgettable.

This updated edition of The Intern Blues includes a new preface from the author discussing the status of medical training in America today and a new afterword updating the reader on the lives of the three young interns who first shared their stories with readers more than a decade ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hauntingly accurate representation of internship
During medical school I was given "The Intern Blues" by a friend (we were both interested in pediatrics). I could not believe that what was in the book really happened, because the problems and stresses appeared to be impossible for anyone to undertake. During my internship in pediatrics, however, I reread the book and was amazed to find that it was 100% factual, from the patient AND physician standpoint. As a Chief Resident in pediatrics as a teaching hospital I have recommended it to the interns, to let them know that what they are experiencing is not unusual, and that they are not alone. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in medicine (especially pediatrics), and for the families of medical students and residents, as it can help them understand the many personality and life style changes that accompany internship and residency. This book is a MUST READ for anyone contemplating pediatric residency.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can it be this bad?
This was the third medical education book I read this spring as part of a medical school course (2nd year). For some reason, I liked this book much more than "Becoming a Doctor" by Melvin Konner (too analytical and removed) and "House of God" by Samuel Shem (too much shock for the sake of shock). The Intern Blues introduced three interns who were probably typical. As a parent, I empathized with Amy and felt she was getting screwed for being a parent and a woman- but somehow she was still so unlikeable- I can't imagine she can still be practicing medicine with such an anti-everything attitude. Andy seemed like a great intern, but by the fifth time he broke down in tears during the first few chapters I was ready to see him jump off a building. Mark was great- I am a firm believer in using sarcasm to keep you sane. Prior to reading this book I told people I was trying to do well in classes so I didn't end up in the Bronx for my residency. Since this sounds like a high powered and competetive program, I'm tempted to tank my boards just so I DON'T end up in the Bronx. I must say, that my impression from people I've talked to is that things may be slightly better these days than they were in 1985. Let's hope so.

4-0 out of 5 stars 20 years old but still a great read
If you're entering medicine now you won't have to deal with 36 hour shift (thank goodness!) but it is very interesting to read about three interns who did in the mid-80's. One even had a two month baby going and was three months pregnant by the time she finished!

This isn't an uplifting book by an stretch, but if you're interested in medicine you won't get bored.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good course material
I first read Intern Blues as a graduate student in a course on health communication. I am now using it as required reading in an undergraduate course I teach on health communication. A number of my students are pre-med or plan to go into health related fields. They have expressed overwhelming interest in this book. It serves as a great supplement to a health communication textbook. Issues related to medical ethics, patient-provider communication, medical training, death and dying, and even health policy permeate this book. This book has influenced the way I work with and relate to physicians. It has also transformed the attitudes of many of my students. I strongly recommend it for personal reading and/or for college course adoption.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Everyone
I'll preface this review by saying my knowledge of the medical profession is minimal at best. However, Marion's book was among the best I've read in a long time. The story of how three interns struggle to make it throught a year is emotionally draining and exhilarating at the same time. Marion does an excellent job of describing all medical terms and summarizing the stress that the interns are going through. After having read this book I have a greater respect and understanding of what current doctors go through to get to their positions. "The Intern Blues" is well worth reading for doctors and non-doctors alike. ... Read more

Will you be a winner on Match Day?

In late March, a life-changing day occurs for students at medical schools across the United States. On Match Day, students learn where they will be pursuing their residency training. For some, it is a time to rejoice. For others, however, there is bitter disappointment when the match does not turn out as expected.

Every year there are medical students who do not match at any residency program. There are many others who do match but are disappointed to learn that they did not match at one of their top programs. These outcomes often leave students wondering what went wrong along the way.

During every step of the residency application process, mistakes can be made that prevent you from matching with the residency program of your choice.Although these errors have been well known to those involved in the resident selection process, they are not well recognized by students applying for residency.

This book identifies the 101 all-too-common mistakes students make during the residency application process. It shows you how to avoid them so you don't fall into the same traps. Here are some of the mistakes you'll learn to avoid:

Mistakes made
On the CV
On the personal statement
When interviewing
When ranking residency programs
And much more

Take charge of the residency application process, instead of letting it take charge of you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book that saves you time
The fourth year of medical school can be a stressful, demanding time. This books cuts down on the amount of necessary reading that you must do in order to match well. The book is a fast read that highlights the most important mistakes that others have made during the match process. It lets you in on tips on all subjects - from forming your CV to obtaining your letters of recommendation to developing your personal statement and preparing for interviews.
I found the sections about the CV and personal statement very helpful and much easier to read than those same sections in a larger book about the match. The section on letters of recommendation was important because it directed me on the proper way to ask for and to attain the best letters of recommendation. The interview section contains good reminders of things that seem common sense but which you don't necessarily think about. It also has several tips about subjects I had not thought about (for example, you should have a case ready to present your interviewer), as well as questions you will be asked in interviews and questions you should ask the interviewer.
Overall, this is an easy to read book that I would definitely recommend because it contains all the essentials to matching in your ideal residency spot. ... Read more

Book Description

The Making of a Surgeon in the 21st Century is a highly personalized description of one individual's experiences during a five-year residency in general surgery at a major university hospital. It describes the personal challenges and rewards, the drama of triumph and tragedy, the agony of indecision and the thrill of success. Residency is the most profoundly life-altering sequence of events in a surgeon's life.

What does it take to make a surgeon?

It takes a college degree and a medical school education, followed by a residency. And it takes a willingness to subordinate one's personal life to acquiring the skills and knowledge which a surgeon must possess. This sacrifice takes its toll - on families, on mental health, on life-style. A surgical trainee may not get out on his own until well in his thirties - living, in the meantime, a meager existence at best.

Post-graduate training in surgery is longer than that of any other medical specialty, five years at least. Tortuous on-call schedules often demand exceedingly long work hours - 100-hour work weeks being the norm. Compounding the problem are very high stress levels, the burdens shouldered by the resident's family in his frequent absence and often an enormous educational debt.

Nevertheless, every year hundreds of fresh medical school graduates compete for the few available positions. They are consistently the very best of their classes.

Why would otherwise intelligent, highly motivated individuals actively seek such a miserable existence?

Surgeons have, of course, been glorified in the mass media as the swaggering, brilliant, fiercely independent cowboys of the medical profession. Their compensation has also been great. But beyond this is a personal quality best defined as decisiveness. They want to make the difference, in no uncertain terms. In surgery, when the patient enters the operating room he is suffering from disease. Thanks to the surgeon, he may be wheeled out cured. It doesn't happen every time, of course, but the possibility is there (in other disciplines of medicine "cure" is, unfortunately, an unusual event). Who wouldn't want to be such a healer, making a palpable, tangible difference? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone seeking to better understand the world of surgery
The Making Of A Surgeon In The 21st Century is the memoir of medical research award-winning career surgeon Craig A. Miller, M.D., and presents the unvarnished true story of what it is like to train as an extreme specialist. Presenting a world of gruelling 100-hour work weeks, gallows humor, harsh realities, and severe pressure at every turn with human lives literally hanging in the balance, The Making Of A Surgeon In The 21st Century is an absolute "must-read" for anyone seeking to better understand the world of surgery and the people who perform it, as well as a taste advised for those considering this demanding career path - so that they can better know the challenges they will confront.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best "inside the world of medicine" book I've ever read
Amazing, is all I can say. It's like a diary of hell, that makes you laugh. I'm in the medical field, and everything in this book is absolutely real. I genuinely couldn't put it down. If you want to know what REALLY goes on inside a hospital, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
A nicely written mélange of exceptional egotism and abuse; astounding resolve and will that has no mercy for oneself; memorable characters; compassion; the inevitable, perhaps secret, humility of human limits; hilarity; and no apology. All of it cradled in the final authority of nature and the inconceivable habit of challenging death.
Miller entertainingly depicts the grueling culture of medicine and the making of a surgeon in our society.
I recommend highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important read for todays medical student or applicant
As an applicant and medical student, I was instructed to read "Gifted Hands" (Ben Carson) and "House of God." This is much better. As the author is churned through the residency machinery, he meets a seemingly endless number of extreme personalities and situations. His experiences reminded me about the difficult choices in medicine and the humanity behind them.

It is a poignant and up-to-date book with lots of entertaining stories and valuable medical information. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will probably decrease your MCAT score!
PLease, do not make the same mistake I did, that is, buying this book 3 weeks before the MCAT to study. This book is inaccurate in many areas at best and insulting to one's intellegence at worst. It only covers about 75-80% of the material you need to know! Unacceptable if you are relying on this for a comprehensive study. Stay away from this one!

1-0 out of 5 stars An Embarrassment to Princeton Review

At first I thought it was just accidental deletions and sloppy editing, but the outright conceptual mistakes in the subject matter make me wonder about who was writing some of it. It's truly hard to believe that Princeton Review would put out something of this quality but it looks like I'll have to shell out another 60 bucks on a different book. I want my money back!

2-0 out of 5 stars Decent but not great.
This book explains materials very well and the multiple choice questions are good. However, there are many mistakes especially in orgo. I also found that some topics were completely omitted(like blood groups in Biology)and many other things. The verbal questions were too easy and insufficient

2-0 out of 5 stars Appalling mistakes in organic chemistry section
I am a Ph.D. graduate student in organic chemistry looking to apply to medical schools next year. I came upon a question on p. 739 of this edition that is incorrect in several aspects.

First, the reaction stated in the problem: 1-ethoxy-1-methoxy ethanol + bromide -----> 1-ethoxy-1-methoxy ethyl bromide + water, will not proceed at all. 1-ethoxy-1-methoxy ethanol does not exist as a stable species -- it will decompose rapidly. Say, hypothetically, that the reaction DOES proceed: the product, 1-ethoxy-1-methoxy ethyl bromide, will rapidly decompose as well.

Secondly, of the four multiple choice answers offered, none is applicable to the stated problem.

Lastly, the authors' explanation of the problem is wholly incorrect. The starting material is NOT a primary alcohol and cannot undergo any type of substitution (SN1 or SN2), especially in light of the poor nucleophile (bromide). Again, hypothetically, if the authors had incorrectly named the structure! ,(the only other logical possibility being 2-ethoxy-2-methoxy ethanol, a primary alcohol) the reaction would still not proceed, because the alcohol functionality is a poor leaving group.

I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for organic chemistry aids for the MCAT, as this book contradicts many fundamental organic chemistry concepts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Princeton Review needs to reevaluate this edition!
I am preparing for the August MCAT and can no longer continue to use this book. There are indeed errors throughout the 4th edition. And the paper that it is printed on is weak and low quality. As you study about blood pressure, you might feel yours rise dangerously due to this book's inability to present the material as clear as it is advertised. ... Read more
