4-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A GREAT HELP TOOL
I AM IN THE FIRST STAGE OF NURSING SCHOOL AND FOUND THIS BOOK TO BE A TOTAL HELP TOOL. THIS BOOK IS VALUABLLE TO EVERY KIND OF NURSING STUDENT AND NEW GRADUATE. THIS BOOK TELLS YOU HOW TO CHOOSE A NURSING SCHOOL THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU, WHAT TO DO IF YOU BECOME SICK TO YOUR STOMACH,TIME MANAGEMENT,TEST TAKING SKILLS, STRESS MANAGEMENT, TIME MANGEMENT, ABOUT FINANCIAL AID, DIFFERENT TYPES OF NURSING DEGREES, ALL ABOUT THE NCLEX & HOW TO STUDY FOR IT AND HOW TO GET JOB INTERVIEWS, MAKE RESUMES AND JOB SEARCHES.THIS BOOK ALSO HAS A LOT OF LINKAGES TO INTERNET SITES WHICH ARE VERY HELPFUL. THE AURTHOR IS A NURSE AND HAS BEEN WHERE I AM AT AND HAS QUOTED ABOUT 300 OTHERS NURSES ON EACH AND EVERYTHING THAT CAN POSSIBLY HAPPEN TO YOU ,PLUS IT IS EASY & FUN TO READ. THIS IS MONEY WELL SPENT. I FEEL 100% BETTER SINCE I HAVE READ THIS BOOK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I am going into Nursing school this fall and I am glad that I got this book. It gave me an idea of what to expect while in nursing school. It also gave study tips how to manage your time, what to do if you feel sick at clinicals. Now that I read the book before i started college I will definitely be taking it with me when i start because it will be a great help. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars There is a newer edition!
I thought this book was amazing...it covered everything I needed to know and then some. One of my friends was ready to quit school until he got this book...he said it was like a (knowledgable) best friend sitting on the shelf!

Looking at the review below, there are some good concerns raised, but almost all of what the reader didn't like has been addressed in the second edition of this book which came out a few months or so ago. There are also some other cool features of the new book...like info on PDAs (my school requires 'em now)and all sorts of info on the nursing shortage.

It might be hard to find (because Amazon has the author's name messed up a bit!) but if you do a search by the title you can find the new edition.

Anyway, definitely purchase this book...the resources alone are worth the price!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but could be better
This book contained some useful information, but I feel that it just skimmed the surface and left some important questions unanswered. For example, in its discussion of the differences between the different types of degrees (diploma, AD, BSN), it would be nice to know: do nurses with BSN's make a lot more money? What is the average salary of a nurse with a bachelor's versus a nurse without one? Are BSN's better prepared to enter the workforce? Do community college nurses get more clinical experience than students in BSN programs? I'd also like to know: does an education at a prestigious, highly ranked nursing school pay off, or is nursing a field where a person would be just as well off attending an inexpensive local college? The book touched upon these questions, but really didn't provide any specific answers. I also feel that it would be helpful to know a bit more about what to expect academically in nursing school. The book emphasizes over and over again that there is a ton of work and it's all very hard, but what are the core nursing classes? What sort of material is studied in the classroom? Are there any books one can read before entering nursing school to prepare oneself (aside from books covered in prerequisite courses)? In terms of academics, what classes are part of a bachelor's program that are not included in an AD program? What specific procedures does a student need to know how to perform by the time he or she graduates? Are there any books available that describe these procedures?
I am left with many unanswered questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best career guide I've read
I picked up this book to read during Spring Break while waiting to hear if I was accepted into an accellerated RN program. It was a great quick read, and I got a lot of great tips out of it. I have been taking pre-reqs, and had already decided on a program, so a lot of the beginning of the book was just a confirmation of what I had already been through.
The web-site listings are really great, especially the humor ones. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but...
I agree with the other (all 5-star) ratings up to this point--the book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series.
3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.

Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes."

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the OB/Gyn clerkship
This is great for MSIIIs starting their OB/Gyn Clerkship--it covers all of the high points of the field in a very clear format and prepares students well for their Shelf exam at the end of the rotation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
If you don't want to plow through 600+ pages of Beckmann, or some other text (i.e. you aren't aiming to specialize in OB/Gyn), you'll love this book. Information is well organized and easy to get through if you enjoy the First Aid format. I never liked the texts...I loved the BRS outline style and First Aid books. I haven't taken the shelf exam yet, but as for my last 2 months on the wards, this book has been a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation
The authors have done an outstanding job. This book manages to simplify what is normally complex. A great tool for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful and Informative
I found this book extrememly helpful and informative. All of the information was presented in a logical and easy to follow manner. ... Read more

Book Description

Do you know what your doctor really thinks or how your doctor really feels about medicine and about you? The seeds lie in the critical first few years of a medical education, and Dr. Robert Marion, director of the Center for Congenital Disorders at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, draws from his own experiences as student, intern, and resident to provide some surprising -- and sobering -- answers. In the course of twenty gripping, illuminating, and extraordinarily candid stories, Dr. Marion reveals the dehumanizing, slightly insane, and often brutal process of medical training. You will experience not only the intense pressure and chronic exhaustion of the doctor-to-be, but also the price the patient must often pay. While each story stands alone as an adventure in medicine, taken together they are a call to change. With profound eloquence and compassion, Dr. Marion explores ways in which to assure that humanity and idealism survive the grueling and destructive path to technical competency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest book for all pre-med
There are only a few books that I enjoyed as much as this book. Dr. Marion is an amazing writer. He manages to keep readers interested without being unrealistic. I recommand this book for anyone interested in becoming a doctor or even dating someone that is thinking of becoming one. The book explores the shortcoming of modern day medical training and the emotional stress that students go through in the process. A must read for pre-med students!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why can't I write like this?
I'm going to keep it plain and simple. This is one of the few excellent medical books that are avialable. I have read many and I highly recommend this one. I just wish I could forget everything I have read so that I could read it again for the first time. I couldn't put the book down. In case you are interested some other great books are "When the air hits your brain", and "first do no harm, reflections on becoming a neurosurgeon". Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I really enjoyed this book! Dr. Marion is very honest about his experiences. The stories are sometimes disturbing and sad, but sometimes happy and they are well written. This book is much better than White Coat by Dr. Rothman because it is much more honest. When I read this book, I felt like I was right there with Dr. Marion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone interested in medicine
This book was absolutely the best true to life book I have read about the medical journey. I could not put it down. Marion is honest about his medical experiences, and although it is dated it is one of the best books I have ever read. If you are interested in becoming a doctor, read this first!

4-0 out of 5 stars The roots of arrogance
Many physicians seem less than human in their ability to connect with the sick and dying. The problem is traceable to how these men and women are trained. This story of one man's medical education in the US, illuminates the process whereby idealistic young people become doctors, often losing their compassion and empathy along the way. Marion's writing style is somewhat pedestrian but his message is important: revamp medical training so that those who earn the right to be called doctor, retain some measure of their humanity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for 3rd year med student!
As someone who just matched into dermatology, I can tell you that residency
program directors look closely at clerkship grades, especially for the more
competitive residencies. '101 Biggest Mistakes 3rd Year Medical Students Make
And How To Avoid Them' is a book that will help you get great clerkship grades.
When you first start rotations, it's tough. You're not always sure where you
fit in, what you should do, and how to handle yourself. That's where this book
comes in - it gives you great advice on what attendings and residents are
looking for in their students. It's done in the form of mistakes students make
year after year. The idea is if you know these mistakes beforehand, you won't
make them and you will come across as a better student. What many students
don't realize, however, is that a lot of the mistakes this book talks about are
REALLY easy to make. That's why I recommend referring to the book regularly
throughout the rotation (like on write-up or when giving talks) to train your
mind against making them. Otherwise, you'll find yourself unknowingly making
them and probably finding out you made them when your resident or attending
tells you so. By then, it may already hurt your evaluation. If you follow this
advice, work hard, and read, you will be in good shape for better evaluations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book!
Excellent book! It contained a tremendous amount of helpful information that went beyond the typical advice that I was given during rotations and that I had read. It had a great deal of information to make you become more efficient and struggle less.
One of the chapters that I gained a lot of information from was on presenting new patients. I think without these tips I would have ended up making those exact mistakes in my presentations.
The book did not go into a review of information for specific rotations like First Aid, however, by doing so this book focuses on its main purpose, doing daily work well and avoiding pitfalls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and full of crucial info
I am a med student who just started third year four months ago. My first rotation was Internal Medicine. During our clerkship orientation, the clerkship director recommended that we read this book. I had never heard of the book before then. He told us that if you follow the recs and tips, it will put you in line for great evals on all rotations. I can't speak for all rotations but it did the job for me during the Internal Med rotation. What was really helpful was the chapter on presenting newly admitted patients. I was really worried about presenting patients to my attending physician and resident but this book was a good guide, showing me where students have gotten into trouble before. It really helped me give good presentations from the get go. My attending physician even said that my presentation skills were better than most new students. I also liked the information on feedback (how to request it), how to set up meetings with the attending, tips to impress attendings, and suggestions for giving talks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read before starting third year but don't use it alone
As an attending physician who works with and advises a lot of third year medical students, I'd like to offer students my thoughts about this book and compare and contrast this book with other guides. Currently, there are really only three books that deal with the third year of medical school. In addition to this one, there's also "First Aid for the Wards" and "How to be a Truly Excellent Junior Medical Student". All three have their strengths and weaknesses. "101 Biggest Mistakes" is a book that I recommend all medical students read at the start of the third year. Not only is it a quick read, it is really the only one that focuses on mistakes that third years make. I agree with the author when he says that these mistakes often prevent students from earning the best possible evaluation.

I have a couple of copies of this book that I hand out to my students on the first day of the rotation. Since it is a quick read, it doesn't take them long to read it. When they are done reading it, they often say to me "this is common sense" and I agree that some of the mistakes are common sense. Despite reading it, most then go on to make some of the same mistakes that are in the book. At first, this surprised me. But then I figured out why. It's because these mistakes are so easy to make that you don't realize you're making them. Now, I encourage them to read it every week - since starting this policy, they are making less of these mistakes on their write-ups, oral case presentations, talks, and attending rounds. One student told me that he read the write-up chapter every single time he wrote a write-up to make sure he didn't make any of the mistakes.

Don't get me wrong - it's not a perfect book. For example, it doesn't offer rotation-specific advice like "First Aid" does nor does it show you how to write a progress note or admit note like "How to be a truly excellent junior medical student" does. But none of these three books are perfect and that's the big take home point, in my opinion. Until that perfect book comes along, I recommend using either "First Aid" or "How to be a truly excellent junior medical student" along with "101 biggest mistakes".

1-0 out of 5 stars 101 Biggest Mistakes 3rd Year Medical Students Make: And How
This book basically picks up certain points from the First Aid for the Wards. There are not 101 mistakes..some are repeats. As well, these mistakes are common sense. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!! It's a waste of money. The First Aid for the Wards goes into much more detail and it has high yield facts for each rotations. ... Read more

The Blueprints series in combination with UCV, first aid step 2, NMS question helped me ace step 2 and make a score in the high 90s. Must start with a sound step 1 base though. Highly recommended. Mastering the material is a must though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Series
I used Blueprints as my primary study guide during my third year of medical school for all rotations. They have all the information you need to know for shelf examinations. Really! I scored well above the 90th percentile on all shelf exams by diligently studying this series. A must have for clinical rotations.

5-0 out of 5 stars great series with a good overview
I really enjoyed reading the Blueprint series. These books are easy to read and give you a great overview over each topic. The more motivated student might feel that some subject is not very deeply covered. Still the essentials you need to know are there. In general USMLE don't ask beyond that. Illustration are excellent and extremly helpful. Also a quick summery with key points helps you to keep important things in mind. In addition the question section is very helpful to estimate your level of knowlege. Overall a series very concisely written, consistent and very good in terms of didactics. Recommended especially for foreign medical graduates. ... Read more

Book Description

Like many an exclusive club, the medical profession subjects its prospective members to rigorous indoctrination: medical students are overloaded with work, deprived of sleep and normal human contact, drilled and tested and scheduled down to the last minute. Difficult as the regimen may be, for those who don't fit the traditional mold--white, male, middle-to-upper class, and heterosexual--medical school can be that much more harrowing. This riveting book tells the tales of a new generation of medical students--students whose varied backgrounds are far from traditional. Their stories will forever alter the way we see tomorrow's doctors.

In these pages, a black teenage mother overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds, an observant Muslim dons the hijab during training, an alcoholic hides her addiction. We hear the stories of an Asian refugee, a Mexican immigrant, a closeted Christian, an oversized woman--these once unlikely students are among those who describe their medical school experiences with uncommon candor, giving a close-up look at the inflexible curriculum, the pervasive competitive culture, and the daunting obstacles that come with being "different" in medical school. Their tales of courage are by turns poignant, amusing, eye-opening--and altogether unforgettable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the big picture with this book...
This book excels in giving you the general flavor and background with respect to school curricula, strong and weak points, housing, entertainment, and other local info that would be difficult to find in any one source. I referred to it extensively and used it as a starting point for further research into schools I might be interested in. I have also found the descriptions to be mostly accurate, as far as the few schools I knew about in particular. Friends I knew, who were also trying to pick schools to apply to, got this book after flipping through my copy. Who exactly the student writers are, and their class standings are particularly irrelevant, as I would hope that you wouldn't base your application decision on any one source. As a general reference, and a peek into a particular school and it's local area, this book can't be beat! The few suggestions I would have would be to update this book every year or two (some of the info was slightly dated, as some schools have changed curriculum (e.g. going from traditional to organ-based, etc.)), and to standardize the descriptions a bit more if possible. Also, reading the great descriptions of schools that you're interested in, leaves you hungry for more, they could easily make this book twice as big, but then it would be a little less handy. *I haven't found any other book out there gives this broad a perspective, so I highly recommend it.*

1-0 out of 5 stars Correct the Correction
Sai Li's point was just what the "Correction" comment states: that current students did fill out the surveys. However, without any biographical information on them (sorry a list of names at the end of the book doesn't do a whole lot of good) and without knowing how those students were picked (i.e., whether they can be considered at all representative of their class and school), we are left not knowing how much weight, if any, should be given to their feedback. It appears as if the "Correction" review was simply an attempt by the author to increase the overall rating of the book by including an additional 5 star review. Pretty transparent, and I second Sai Li's recommendation to get your hands on the AAMC's MSAR book which is the only guide to medical schools officially sanctioned by the American Association of Medical Colleges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correction
Sai Li is certainly entitled to an opinion, however negative, of our book. However, there is a glaring error of fact in Sai's review. Every review, with just a few exceptions in which we could not find medical students at particular schools (fewer than 10 out of 126 schools), is written by a current medical student or recent graduate of the particular school. Their names are in fact listed in the back of the book. I'm not sure why Sai had this misperception, but I thought it was important to correct it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
True, each article was written by an actual med student, but how were those students chosen? Were they the top of the class, or the slackers? Why did they pick the school? Perhaps the editors could have supplemented the book with a short biography of each writer. Better yet, have a student unaffiliated with the school infiltrate the medical school and do the writing. Each article was overwhelmingly positive, and ended with the writer saying "great school," "high-quality education," etc, whether if it's Hopkins or the University of Southern Florida. Were they afraid that the schools would sue them for defamation if they pointed out the shortcomings? The descriptions of "Preclinical Years" and "Clinical Years" took up most the space, when I could have gotten more up-to-date information from brochures. Perhaps the Social Life sections could have been expanded, since this is the only thing that's not available elsewhere. This book will not help shorten the list of the schools you'll be considering, but make it longer. If you really need to buy a book about medical schools, get the Medical School Admissions Requirements from AAMC. It is updated annually and gives selection factors and prerequisites, and will save you a lot of money when it comes to deciding which schools to apply. If you're really interested in the school, go on a tour and ask around, or schedule a telephone interview with a med student over there. When it says on the introduction "Peterson's did not verify and cannot vouch for the accuracy of information contained within these profile," how can I trust anything I read?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide with insights unlike other similar books.
This is a fun book to read while you're deciding where to apply for medical school. It was light, but informative reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another question book...
This is a pretty good book, separated by topic (eg: DVT, CHF, Diabetes, cough, dyspnea, back pain... each with about 20 questions and THOROUGH explanations for each answer (and wrong answers). But the cool thing is that it comes with the exact same questions and explanations on the accompanying CD-ROM.
This book has no extra frills. It's not entertaining... but it does provide another source from which my professors liked to borrow (steal) questions for their in-house exams!

4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate for fourth-year clinical rotation
This book presents a series of clinical vignettes with questions. The standard major topics are covered. Mastery of these vignettes should ensure a good grade in a third-year rotation, but would require a fair amount of effort.

The level of question difficulty is more appropriate for fourth-year students, although this book does not discuss many of the "Zebras" which fourth-year students frequently are expected to know in order to get superior grades.

Best suited for the ambitious third-year student. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for telephone medicine
This practical and useful book is an excellent resource on training office staff on the art of telephone medicine. It will be a valuable teaching tool for students and clinicians at all levels to learn how (as Dr. Katz says) "to tame the telephone". After all, no clinician, whether MDs, NPs or PAs are able to escape using telephones in their practices. In addition, this edition is now available to the public to help patients use the phone more effectively when calling their doctor.

This revised edition expands upon its original pediatric focus to now include adult medicine. The most common symptoms of why pediatric and adult patients call their physician have been selected for the guidelines. All chapters follow the same format, thus being user-friendly for both office staff and clinicians. Practical guidelines for determining if and when a patient needs to be seen are presented clearly in all the clinical chapters.

Two other notable strengths of this well-written book are: its focus on quality improvement and its discussion on how to reduce risk of malpractice.

I showed this book to a nurse in my office, asking if she would find it useful for telephone triage. Her response was quite favorable. This is the kind of reaction that I expect would be typical for Dr. Katz's book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad
As a prospective possible accelerated medical school applicant next year, I found this book to be very helpful in finding out what programs were out there and information on how to contact each individual school or program. However, I wished that the authors went into more detail with regards to campus life on and off campus at each college or university. This type of information could have been helpful for me in narrowing down which schools I should consider applying for next year. Unfortunately, I had to find other books or resources to get this sort of information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It!
After reading this book and "Medical School from High School"(by A.M. Ilyas), Dr. Ilyas' book was, without a doubt, a better buy. Raju and Yanofski's book does not include enough details to lead any high school student in the right direction. Dr. Ilyas's book is more informative, straightforward and the thorough index of schools in the end is a priceless resource! "From High School to Medical School" is not worth your time or money. There are much better books to use if considering applying to any accelerated med. program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book! Must have for college apps.
I bought this book a few months back, and it's great. I heard about these fast track medical programs from my friends and they recommended this book. I especially liked the candidate profiles, application timeline, and easy to read format. It's definitely going to be my source when I apply to colleges next year. Though it says medical programs, much of the info in this book can be used for other stuff. One of my best academic investements.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks Detail
Although well written, this book didn't contain any of the specific information about accelerated medical programs that I was looking for. For example, do I have to take the MCAT at Brown University? How is the social life at Alabama? What are the minimum requirements for each program? Which programs accept out of state students? "The High School Doctor" by Koneru, Wang, and Arora answered all of these questions and more. However, I still recommend "From High School to Med School" to purchase as a supplementary source. It was well written.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
I am a junior in high school and when I found about the book From High School to Med. School I was really excited. I have been waiting for a book to come out like this for a long time. However I still needed more info to be fully informed. My counselor also presented me with The High School Doctor by Koneru,Wang, and Arora. This book helped me more on what I was looking for and helped me design a better plan for next few years left of school. I congratulate both books. ... Read more
