5-0 out of 5 stars Will probably increase your chances of getting in!
I carefully followed this book's recommendations throughout the entire application process. I applied to eleven APA accredited doctoral programs in clinical psychology and was accepted at EIGHT of them! The book's detailed suggestions were tremendously helpful and probably contributed to this remarkable outcome. However, I found it important to use other sources of information as well, since some data in the book is inaccurate. Inadequate information on how to select the "best-fit" school from among multiple offers was the book's greatest shortcoming. P.S. Don't worry about typing the application forms - just use very neat printing or handwriting. Type everything else, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Got In!
Although I was a highly qualified applicant a year ago, I didn't know the real "tricks" to getting into a Ph.D. program. Therefore, I was rejected by all 10 programs to which I applied. After finding this book (thank you, thank you, thank you to the authors!) and following its instructions, I have received 3 offers and will begin attending Columbia's clinical psychology program this fall. Hooray!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive guide to APA approved psych programs
Everything you'd want to know about grad school is all in this one source. This book includes everthing you'd want to know about applying to graduate schools (overall acceptance rates, whether an advanced degree helps, what graduate schools consider to be important). However, rather than presenting the author's advice and opinions, the information is compiled from empirical research studies which adds much credibility to the information provided. Very helpful, is also the comprehensive guide of all APA approved combined, clinical and counselling psych programs. Provided are such things as scales indicating how clinically or research oriented a program is, the theoretical orientations of the faculty, what percentage of students are accepted into APA internships, the GPA and GRE cutoffs, number of applications received and number admitted, percentage of students receiving financial aid, percentage who hold advanced degrees, percentage of women and minorities, average years to completion of the program as well as research and clinical oppurtunities available. This book is very helpful in providing you with a general idea of what programs you may want to look into further, however the information doesn't always seem to be 100% accurate, therefore you may want to investigate further rather than accept all the information as factual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This to Get In
For anyone interested in clincal or counseling graduate study, this book is essential. These areas are extremely competitive and one cannot go into the process "blind." The general APA guide can be useful, but it covers many areas and mainly gives the basic facts on all programs. On the other hand, this book is very specialized. It gives information on the programs, but also includes invaluable information relevant to clinical and counseling psychology training. It has information on the programs, but also tells you how to prepare yourself, so you get in to those programs.

I am interested in clinical health psychology and this book was a great help. It has a useful index of programs by subject area. It also has a self-rating from programs about how strongly they emphasize research or clinical practice. It is essential to find schools that will provide you with the experiences you are looking for.

Overall, this book will help you find programs that suit your needs and maximize your potential for getting accepted to them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book has been my savior I reccommend it to anyone even remotely interested in a PHd or a PsyD in clinical psychology you wont be dissapointed ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for USMLE Step 1
This was a great book. I got it during second year of medical school. It has a lot of good cases and with Step 1 becoming case based, this was very useful. There are quesions and explanations after each case. I highly recommend it if you like to study by a case based method or if you are preparing for the boards Step I and/or II.

3-0 out of 5 stars Question sets by organ system
This is a good book to review for the Step 1 of the USMLE. It is divided into 8 Organ system sections and each subsection consists of clinical scenarios describing a common disease that affects the specific organ system followed by 3 questions regarding the anatomy/physiology/normal processes involved plus one question about the pathophysiology. The explanations are OK. This books would be excellent if they had included at least 6 questions per case and if the explanations section had some diagrams. ... Read more

Admission to medical school is highly competitive, with only about one out of three applicants gaining acceptance. 5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book for nontraditional students
This is the only book I could find that dealt directly with issues that the nontraditional applicant would face in applying to medical school. I highly recommend it for applicants who are older, have a non-science degree or have other obstacles to overcome in applying to medical school. One chapter is devoted to success stories of applicants who had huge obstacles to overcome and still were able to do the impossible - getting accepted into medical school despite these barriers. Very inspiring!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good and suitable
This book contains a reasonably large amount of useful information. Finding one book or even one source of all your med school information should not be anyone's goal. It is an easy read with a vast range of topics which are all applicable. One of the most important parts of the book includes a listing and run down of almost every med school in the country, including gpa and mcat statistics, and tuition.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless
All the information contained in this book is available online, free. Being someone with a love of science, I hated his tone. He concentrates too much on the non-traditional applicant, he who didn't major in science. I should have started reading this book before I bought it, I wasted my money.
If you are an non-tradional applicant, you might like the book. If you are majoring in any science or engineering, don't dare buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for a college pre med
I found this book to be fairly useless for a regular premed. It features mostly non traditional students who "beat the odds" and make it in. If you're a normal pre med in college, you're not going to glean anything from this except that maybe you should study harder so you can avoid some of these problems. Examcrackers has a great forum for real premed advice for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars worth the read, worth the bucks
I read one of the first editions of this book and found it encouraging, especially since I was a non traditional student. The end result: I did get into medical school. ... Read more

Book Description

__________

This review is aimed at practicing internists and residents of INTERNAL MEDICINE who have surely been searching for a concise, outlined, and one-of-a-kind review of internal medicine in all of its subspecialties for the INTERNAL MEDICINE CERTIFICATION AND RECERTIFICATION EXAMS administered through the American Board of Internal Medicine. This book is concise, thorough, and fully-outlined, so you will clearly see the relationships between the concepts you’ll have to know.It also features tons of great MNEMONICS you’ll thank your lucky stars for.Speaking of stars, we know you’ll appreciate our ample use of formatting, especially the use of*** STARRED ITEMS ***to help call attention to particularly important material. Over the years, we’ve been blessed with tons of questions and answers from the boards that have been voluntarily submitted by physicians who have gone on to pass their boards, in their effort to help those "soldiers left behind"!You should know, then,!that this book is an excellent companion to the Frontrunners’ Internal Medicine 2004 Q&A REVIEW: Self-Assessment & Board Review, which features over 1200 Q&A to prepare you for battle.

We run promotions throughout the year, where you can actually get the Q&A book half-off with your Frontrunners’ syllabus when you call directly at: 866-MDBOARDS (866-632-6273) or 866-IMREVIEW (866-467-3843) and refer to promotional code #amznQ1/2off.Equally important, we offer a number of packages featuring all our T.O.P. (Take Out Package) board review books (includes these: Syllabus, 1200 Q&A book, Mnemonics book, and HIV and Blood Gas booklets for the boards--which are ALL of our printed board review materials), as well as our even more popular Audio Visuals CD packages for the Boards. Make sure you know all of our latest offerings and promotions. Call to find out about our various packages and ways to save OR for the most recent brochure featuring all of our offerings. We can even email it to you within minutes for your convenience or send it via snail mail. Currently, all AudioVisual packages automatically include all the TOP books (Syllabus, Q&A, Memory Aids, HIV and!ABGs for the Boards), and represent huge savings when you order directly. They're also ideal if you just can't make it out to our Weekend Marathon Reviews in California each August. If you’re a mnemonics fan (and who isn’t?), or you love the ones here, then you’ll definitely want to check out TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS! : Over 400 MEMORY AIDS to the Most Commonly Asked CLINICAL Material on the Medicine Boards! It features 100s of mnemonics that, we promise, will make your life a whole lot easier. At the same time these resources are outstanding study aids for medical students, residents, internists, and other health care professionals who simply want the best no-nonsense review of internal medicine. The course has been widely and enthusiastically received for its unconventional, no-nonsense approach to the review of internal medicine.Unfortunately, thousands of physicians, wanting to be board-certified, are simply unable to attend a formal board review course due to!time or geographic constraints. For those physicians especially this book will be a welcome review.

All major subsections of the exam have beenrepresented with each section bearing its own chapter. Aren’tyou tired ofreading and rereading (or even falling asleep!) amid long-winded paragraphs from standard textbooks that never make it clear what’s important to know for the exam?So were we, and that’s how this syllabus came into being. This book is completely outlined, so that the relationship between concepts is crystal clear—no more guessing! You’ll also find tons of key mnemonics you’ll definitely be using on your exam, along with contributive formatting through the use of bolds, underlining, italics, boxed-in points, and of course, the *** STARREDITEMS *** to help call your attention to particularly important material, that the boards like to ask--an outstanding way to capitalize on those last few hours before your exam.A thorough and realistically designedIndex section makes those look-ups, whether throughout your studies or just before your boards, a cinch!

Having said all this, we also realize that there are individuals who have, over the years, grown weary of tedious self-study and who want to take advantage of a sit-down, "feed-me" style of board review, with all the same core material, slides, cases, and more, even if the syllabus can come to them. For this reason we continue to offer our formal / sit-down board review course each year. This is an intensive, 18-hour, HIGH-YIELD-ITEMS-ONLY WEEKEND MARATHON REVIEW, offered each year in early August—ideal for most physicians who can’t break away during the week. For upcoming dates or to register for any of theseWEEKEND MARATHON REVIEWS, or to order 1) TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS, featuring > 400 anagrams and other mnemonics to markedly improve the efficiency of your board review studying; or 2) the Q&A REVIEW, featuringover 1200 realistic Q&A, see the "Quick Order Form" at the very end of this book or just call866-MDBOARDs (866-632-6273) NOW to order or find out more. Why make your studying any harder than it actually has to be?If you can’t make that weekend, the Audio CD Syllabus & Slide Shows for the Boards can be shipped out.You get the whole weekend, only without the added expense of hotel + airfair + tuition.

We’re confident that you’llfind this an outstanding resource for your upcoming board exam (as well as your day-to-day practice of Internal Medicine). Our greatest hope, however, is that we’ve shown you an easier way to passing your boards!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE
I couldn't make it out to Frontrunners' Weekend Marathon Review course, so got the syllabus instead. It was really outstanding. The syllabus went through all the key stuff you have to know for your I.M. cert boards and things that were all over the exam. The cherry on top was that, like the other reviewers, I got my Q&A book free when I called Frontrunners for my syllabus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb I.M. Review Syllabus
I truly felt this was a superb review for the medicine boards, and my scores agree. I went thru everything once, then hit all the boxed-in points and starred items the 2nd and 3rd times. The starred items are all the key stuff that you gotta know and that were EVERYWHERE on my exam. Superb resource for the ABIM /internal medicine certification exam. My partner used it for her I.M. recert and also did extremely well. She had also attended the Frontrunners' Weekend Marathon Review and loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SYLLABUS! LOVED THE COURSE!
Very thorough, concise, well-organized. Great for the internal medicine I.M. boards. While I didn't get my Q&A for free, like some of the other reviewers, I did get my syllabus for free when I made it out to the review, which was a high-yield, dynamic review like nothing I'd seen before. Great slides. Dynamic lectures. Great memory aids. A major recommend from me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding. WishI'd known about it earlier.
Great syllabus! I got my copy 1 week before the exam after my partner recommended it. I'm sure I got at least 30 points from the STARRED (*) items alone, which I scanned the day before. That's a must. The Q&A book was also truly excellent. Even better, my Q&A book was free when I called Frontrunners for my syllabus. Excellent resources if you're aiming to pass your I.M. boards. I only wish I'd known about it earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars HIGH YIELD FROM START TO FINISH
I thought the Syllabus was high yield throughout. I got at least 30 points on my IM boards from this source alone and another 20 or so from the Q&A companion. Even better, my partner and I got the Q&A book FREE when we ordered our syllabus through Frontrunners 866-mdboard number. So a definite recommend for all these reasons. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This First Aid series fizzles out at match time
The First Aid books are a pretty good series (Step 1, Step 2, Wards) until you get to this book. It is noticeably thinner than the others, and there is a reason. Too little information. There are some good points, such as the Program Evaluation Worksheets and analysis on trends in the match process on each specialty. However, I would suggest Iserson's instead of or in addition to this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Which book should you get to help you match successfully?
I am about two months away from starting my internship and I'd like to offer those who are about to start the residency application process some advice. At my medical school, I am a member of a committee that provides guidance to students through the match process. Other members of the committee include residency program directors, interns/residents, deans, and clerkship directors. Our mission is to help students match successfully. Here are the books we reviewed:

FIRST AID FOR THE WARDS BY VIKAS BHUSHAN - It was the committee's feeling that this book is not as strong as some of the other books in the First Aid Series. It contains a lot of information about the different specialties in terms of spots available and competitiveness. But after reading through the various sections (personal statements, letters of recommendation, interview), most of our students didn't feel like they had a strategy for developing a great personal statement, securing a strong letter of recommendation, and knocking the socks off the interviewer. One of its strengths were the many examples of CVs and personal statements that if offers.

ISERSON'S GETTING INTO RESIDENCY - This book, which is now in its 6th edition, has an amazing amount of information. This is a book that clearly should be bought on day #1 of med school because it has info that is helpful in years 1, 2, 3, and 4. It's organized better than First Aid for the Wards.

THE RESIDENCY MATCH: 101 BIGGEST MISTAKES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM BY SAMIR DESAI - This is a new book that wasn't available when I was applying for residency last summer. It's a different perspective on the whole process, with the author focusing on the mistakes students make. After looking it over, the members of our committee felt that these were indeed some of the major errors made during the way. In many cases, these errors can hurt your chances of matching with your top program. I recall making some of these mistakes myself and would have found this book useful had it been available. It's probably better to use Iserson's book along with this book rather than either one alone.

And finally, none of these books can take the place of a good advisor. That's the last piece of advice I will leave you with. Best of luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars great condition and great price
This book is in real good condition and surprisingly low price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so Hot
I really liked the First Aids for USMLE 1 and USMLE 2 and found this book a much weaker cousin and very expensive for the content. There's nothing here that you can't get from JAMA or your Dean's office. The Iserson's Getting Into a Residency gives you a lot more info for about the same price. There's almost nothing to help out the IMG (who I suspect are frequent buyers) and (again) nothing for anyone with special circumstances, such as older age, second careers, disability, couples match, gay and lesbian issues, etc. Borrow a copy from the library instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars First Aid comes to the rescue again!
I am using First Aid to study for the boards, and in glancing at this book, it seems to be very helpful. I think they really did a good job with all of the books in this series. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mosby USMLE step 3 review
this is a good book and very well written for the step 2 USMLE. I rank it 5 STAR for the step 2. but it is insufficent for the step three. it can be use as a source for the fast refreeshment of your memory but not for preparation to sit for the step 3.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much detail
I think this book has too much detail with the topics it includes and it misses many pathologic diseases that are included in other reviews. I would definitely not use only this book for review.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
This book lacks any depth to help you study. Would not use as a sole study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
this book can be a very good supplement for step 3 preperation. I would recommend reading it. It can be reviewed sveral times due to its special format in a short period.

This is the first comprehensive study guide covering all aspects of Critical Care Medicine. The condensed format of coverage is unique; it supplies a heavily-illustrated text with self-assessment questions and answers. This approach will help the reader to determine the correct answer. The text is supported by case studies, tables, and illustrations which will describe important procedures. Also, the selected readings and references will focus on the field's leading major references so this book will be the ideal complement to previously published literature. 4-0 out of 5 stars excelent
This book is full of illustrations and pictures. I would be surprised if anybody gives it less than 4 stars. I think its too big to be soft cover though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great: But can get a bit wordy
As a fourth year medical student, I found this book to be a great reference during my ICU rotations. That being said, this book should not replace "The ICU book" as a standard operating manual. This book contains much more Information than the ICU book, but is better left for reading at night after you have finished your day.
For example, the Chapter on Mechanical Ventilation, is a terrific, very thorough explanation of Vents and vent management, but is very detailed. A little more detailed than a medical student needs. This book will serve me very well during residency.
This along with "The ICU book" are must haves for your Critical Care library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars if you are thinking about leaving the bench, buy this book!
This book was originally loaned to me by an administrator at my graduate school. I borrowed it twice, for several months each! I finally bought the book because it is such a great reference. It gives overveiws of broad areas, such as law, business, writing and publishing, scientific journalism and education, both formal and informal. For each section, there are bios and interviews with people holding various positions within the field. And there are great tips for how to prepare yourself for the change, as well as things to expect after the leap (for example, many of these careers are a one-way change, meaning the door to research closes). However, the most valuable part of the book (and the reason I purchased it) is the contacts with trade organizations. For each area, there is a list of several organizations, listing who they are, what the mission is, what they offer and how to contact them. Bottom line, if a lifetime of benchwork and grantwriting doesn't seem like you, but this book. You might find yourself identifying with a career you never would have thought about otherwise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must for patients and family members.
As the daughter of an 83 yr old mother who is developing more and more PD symptoms, I found this to be an invaluable resource. I have looked at other newer resources and this is by far, the one I prefer due to the information found within and its readability. My mother is now reading it for the third or fourth time, highlighting as she goes. It has helped both of us understand and deal more efficiently with the many symptoms, as they develop.

5-0 out of 5 stars First good information I found on the Parkinson's condition
My aunt picked this up in a continuing education class she took to better understand this disease has been affecting her sister, my mother. It does an excellent job of presenting the evolution of our limited understanding of the causes of the Parkinson's condition. Case studies are used to expand on this basic understanding by illustrating the utility of the insights in dealing with the disease in actual patients.

If you are interested in understanding this disease, this little book is a great place to start. It will provide an excellent base to build on with more recent literature, as well providing an understanding of how and why different treatments succeed or fail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just write a thoughtful and sincere essay!
The best lesson from this book is actually the step-by-step process described in the beginning. The essays are just there for you to get an idea of how unique you can get. By following their process and getting the most of what I have learned from my own life experiences, I ended up with a great essay - something that I am proud of submitting. How did I do it? Just read and completed all of their practical exercises. Otherwise, some of the essays are inspiring and they give you some ideas that may be relevant to your application. Don't listen to the post about this book being all for Ivies. I came from a state school and I still ended up interviewing at the very top schools. What gets past the admissions is your true character and sincere expression of why you want to be a doctor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting essays with some useful pointers
I found this book not as useful as it claims to be. The essays feature here are usually too unique to be used as "model essays". Most of these candiates are best of the best students with tons of great experiences or personal accounts. I still enjoy reading through many of these essays and the pointers the book provides. However DO NOT expect to use these essays as model for your personal statements. This is not what this book is for.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay but there are better books out there
This book was great when it initially came out. However, nowadays, you need some new stuff in order to make it in. Considering the fact that a zillion people bought this book and wrote based on it, admissions are on to it. I suggest From High School to Med school by Raju and Yanofski for some fresh essays. It's written for accelerated medical programs, but they have some good essays in there.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for PreMeds
After applying to medical school once and not getting in, I started looking for a different approach to my second application. This book really turned my essay around. The book takes you through all the steps to put together a good essay that will catch the admission committee's attention. The example essays I found helpful also. Your essay will be what you put into it, but this book will help a lot if you will put the work into it. I would definately recommend it as a must have for anyone applying to medical school. It must have worked, because I will be starting medical school in the fall.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and effective
This is a good book that covers one of the more important and often neglected areas of medical school admissions. Kaufman does a good job of giving readers examples of how to write essays that admissions committee members will find both interesting and honest. However, I would recommend Dr. Goliszek's "Complete Medical School Preparation and Admissions Guide" for an overall guide to getting into medical school. ... Read more
