Book Description

Fifty years before Resident Life became a reality television show on The Learning Channel, Clifton Meador lived, breathed, and sometimes slept the life of a med student at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Meador recalls those days in a fascinating and entertaining memoir, packed with stories, vignettes, and experiences that capture a time and place gone by. Med School celebrates the joy of learning, the excitement of medical discovery, and the adverture of caring for patients in a setting that helped shape modern medicine. While Med School will resonate with medical practitioners, its sheer charm will appeal to anyone who enjoys a wonderfully told story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Med School Tells it Like it Was
I love this little book. Of course the fact that I was in med school in Birmingham, AL about the same time author Meador was in med school in Nashville, TN, probably has a lot to do with that. Although some of the content is historical, and some frankly hysterically funny, this is how the American doctors of the past 50 years were trained. It behooves patients to try to understand this as they work on their own patient-physician relationships. Yes, medicine has changed a lot, but Meador's tales suggest that med school, in essence, may not have changed much. We have published an excerpt chapter of Med School at www.medscape.com/viewarticle/473668, if the Amazon reader wants to taste before buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Insight into Life and Education of a Medical Student
In reading this enthralling book, one is taken step by step through the education and life of a medical student and young doctor. You will laugh and you will cry. This is an exciting and entertaining memoir. It is filled with true stories, vignettes and experiences that will make you understand how doctors are created and why they are like they are. He pays tribute to his patients, as well as, his professors as eminent teachers. Dr. Meador's compassion and extraordinary sense of humor combine to give him an inimitable voice...one that leads you rapidly through the book... When you finish you wish it had not ended so soon..... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars If it is not required for your class, don't buy it.
I bought this book because it was listed as an additional text book for my pediatric nursing class. I never even used it. My instructor didn't really teach from the subjects in the workbook, and since the reason I bought it was to help me pass the class, I really had no use for it.

Book Description

Why should psychiatrists become certified? Board certification today is not just a mark of excellence that qualifies psychiatrists for more pay; it also has become a necessity—required by hospitals, managed care providers, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The third edition of this eminently practical volume offers a proven roadmap for successfully navigating one of the most stressful events of the psychiatrist's professional life—Part II of the ABPN examination, the live patient interview. During this ordeal, candidates must put away their accustomed mantle of authority and, within a rigid time limit and under the spotlight's glare, obtain a body of information, formulate and defend a diagnosis, and discuss etiology, prognosis, and therapy.

Because the ABPN serves the public and is evaluative rather than educational, it is not prepared to offer the assistance candidates require. Instead, candidates look to individuals, psychiatric training programs, organizations such as the APA—and now, the third edition of this meticulously detailed and, above all, proven guide to passing this often-traumatic exam.

The authors have called on virtually every available resource in updating this new edition, including interviews with dozens of candidates and examiners. An important inclusion is the ten most common reasons why candidates fail, and the authors explain in detail how to overcome these pitfalls:

1. Inadequate mock board experience
2. Low level of concern for patient's feelings and well-being
3. Poor follow-up on cues
4. Insufficiently broad differential diagnosis
5. Lack of broad-based treatment plan (biopsychosocial)
6. Poor time management (so data isn't obtained for some areas )
7. Inadequate case formulation
8. Examination anxiety
9. Allowing patient to control the interview
10. Inadequate familiarity with diagnostic criteria

Meticulously referenced and indexed, with 13 chapters (one of them an actual recorded MBE) and 5 appendixes, this indispensable guide will be welcomed by ABPN candidates everywhere as an invaluable aid to passing this most rigorous of examinations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars made me love biochemistry
throughout my stay in med school, I never understood why I must be subjected to all those biochemical details. I was aware, of course, that I needed to understand the basic chemical processes that affected the human body, but I couldn't find any reason why my professors would treat medical students as if they were biochem majors. Boy, was I glad when the biochemistry class was over, and I passed the darn course!
I was to meet this same course a few years ago, when I had to sit for the USMLE I. Like a sick child who must swallow a bitter tablet, I reluctantly began to study biochem. Again.
It was a very pleasant surprise that the course was really interesting. I mean, I enjoyed it as much as I did physiology (and I always loved physiology!).
I realized that I came to love biochem because of this book. The authors knew how to give you solid biochemical reasons for those familiar clinical conditions. Contrary to my previous experiences in med school, I found out that biochemistry is indeed a very interesting vourse.
The only (small) problem that you may find with this book is, it could be too detailed at times. However, it covers the USMLE topics quite well. If you have read Kaplan's materials, you'd agree that there are very many similarities. I read both.
If you want to use it for the USMLE I exam, I suggest you first read the specific topics required for the exam. Afterwards, you may then the other areas that are not vital for the exam, if you are interested, and you have the extra time.
I wish I had this book much earlier. It's really nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good biochemistry review in outline form
This is a good review book for medical school. It offers great depth and details to the subject of biochemistry albeit it lacks the illustration and color of textbooks. The book is written in an outline form, so reading a chapter of Davidson's Biochemistry can be tedious; but then, there are those who like to study that way ... Read more

The 5 books in this series were incredibly helpful for blowing away the USMLE. If you want to barely pass, get First Aid and hope that is enough (it's not). 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book for medical students!
I am a 3rd year medical student, curious and nervous (as we all are) about the match process. This is a very helpful guide to getting started on your residency search. It details how to choose a specialty, with detailed information on a very long list of specialties (even obscure subspecialties and fellowships!), instructs you on how to make yourself as attractive a candidate as possible, and gives you helping hints on every step of the way, from writing your CV to interviews to making your rank list to match day to moving! Very comprehensive, very useful. While it is a long book, it's an easy read (I read half of it in a few hours one night). I highly recommend this book to all medical students (one last piece of advice: even if you don't know what specialty you want, don't wait until your 4th year to start reading up on the match!!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!
If you are in the process of matching for residency, you're too late to read this book. As a third year student, I found it extremely helpful. Iserson explains the match process and offers helpful strategies on how to get the residency you want!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for an IMG
I am a IMG and found this book extrememly useful . This book explains in step by step about the entire process of the Residency application and the Match process.

The first part of the book deals with the various specialities and their pros and cons. The second part of the book deals with various process of residency application including on how to work on your personal statement , clerkship and reference letters etc.

There is a specific chapter on IMG and it deals with issues specific to IMG's .

The latter part of the book deals with Interviewing process and on how to deal with post match scramble.

Overall I was extremely satisfied with this book and would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is planning to go through the Residency process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this one!
The new, 6th edition is scheduled to release from the presses on April 15, 2003. Check out Galenpress.com or here after that time to get the updated version.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Guide of all Guides
Let me start by first saying that if you don't have this blue book, you're missing on an important piece of the pie of getting into a residency in the US. This book has it all and it starts from the very beginning.

The first part helps students pick out their specialty. An extensive text explaining each and every specialty with its pros, cons and fellowships are written in minute details. From how many people are accepted per year to how much money these guys make in the end. It even goes to what personality may fit a specific specialty and not the othe. The book is the most widely used text for students who have still yet to find their calling in a medical specialty. After reading the chapter, you will definitely know where you want to go and you will actually have your reasons for making such a decision.

The second part takes you on an overview of all th exams that a person has to complete and what they actually mean when a person does them. A section on the IMG exams of CSA and TOEFL are also highlghted.

The third part talked about the application process. Everything is covered. From what you have to wear for your interview, how you get there, and how you even pack your suitcase is shown in diagrams and illustrations. Iserson goes into the details of the interview extensively and actually gives out a detailed array of what are the major areas of questioning applicants maybe asked in their interview. As a person who has gone through this gruelling process recently, a lot of what has been written gets actually asked.

IMGs are covered in some chapters of the book and there is one whole chapter that talks exclusively about them. Though, the chapters are good, there are better texts that have been written for IMGs. This book, however, can be used to cover everything else in that matter.

Though it's an extensive read, it's really worth it and since the book is moving on to its sixth edition (last edition, 5th, was in 2000), it means further demand is making this book as popular as ever and still the number one reference to a great number of medical students. ... Read more

Book Description

Already the recipient of extraordinary critical acclaim, this magisterial book provides a landmark account of American medical education in the twentieth century, concluding with a call for the reformation of a system currently handicapped by managed care and by narrow, self-centered professional interests.

Kenneth M. Ludmerer describes the evolution of American medical education from 1910, when a muck-raking report on medical diploma mills spurred the reform and expansion of medical schools, to the current era of managed care, when commercial interests once more have come to the fore, compromising the training of the nation's future doctors. Ludmerer portrays the experience of learning medicine from the perspective of students, house officers, faculty, administrators, and patients, and he traces the immense impact on academic medical centers of outside factors such asWorld War II, the National Institutes of Health, private medical insurance, and Medicare and Medicaid. Most notably, the book explores the very real threats to medical education in the current environment of managed care, viewing these developments not as a catastrophe but as a challenge to make many long overdue changes in medical education and medical practice.

Panoramic in scope, meticulously researched, brilliantly argued, and engagingly written, Time to Heal is both a stunning work of scholarship and a courageous critique of modern medical education. The definitive book on the subject, it provides an indispensable framework for making informed choices about the future of medical education and health care in America. ... Read more

Book Description

Since the publication of the first edition of this book in 1983, A Handbook for Medical Teachers has established itself as an ideal resource for new and established teachers who frequently still have little opportunities for education training. Its popularity relates to the successful combination of sound educational principles, a how-to-do-it approach and an entertaining easy-to-read style. It is supported by numerous illustrations, examples, and pertinent cartoons.

This fourth edition has been extensively revised to reflect the major changes that continue to occur in both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Many academic staff are coming under external and internal review to demonstrate their teaching competence and the quality of their courses and assessments. This book gives valuable help and advice to those having to respond to such pressures.

The illustrations are by Zig Kapelis, formerly Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Adelaide. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Hot for Doctors....
While I must admit I did not READ the entire book, I did give it a fairly thorough skimming. As a physician preparing to start my job search I found this book to be minimally useful. The cover boldly proclaims that the book contains model resumes for DOCTORS, etc. Truth is there is not a single model resume for a physician/doctor to be found in this book. The false advertising on the cover really burns that part of me next to where I usually keep my wallet. M.D.'s and D.O.'s look elsewhere!
