4-0 out of 5 stars A nurse's review
As the shortage of nurses increase and the number of professional educators for nurses declines, one wonders what can be done to promote the nursing profession and reverse this trend. The impact that nursing education has on these two phenomena is seriously being investigated as a possible cause and cure to these problems. Nursing education, as the book points out, has always been teacher-centered. Nursing educators also act as the one to promote the nurse into the profession or stop the student's progression. This traditional role is spelled out clearly by Nancy Diekelmann and the other writers in their book, Teaching the practitioners of care: New pedagogies for the health professions. In a profession where curriculum is geared towards developing interpersonal skills and working in groups, students find themselves in an environment that is competitive and isolating. The student's relationships with facility are reported characterized with fear, anxiety and anger.

Interpretive pedagogies, individually known as critical, feminist, phenomenological, and postmodern pedagogies, are a particular approach to schooling, learning, and teaching where the focus is placed on students and teachers working to together to learn in community oriented activities. This book uses research and nursing stories to portray a learning climate where these varieties of interpretive pedagogies weave a smooth transition to a new landscape of learning and teaching in nursing. Interpretive pedagogies promote both student and teacher learning. In nursing, which is quickly changing, this method of education provides for a constant flow of valuable knowledge.

I believe the role of the teacher will become more general, helping students find, interpret, and apply information, instead of the traditional subject matter expert. The educators in the health care professions can look to books like this for valid guidance.

I found myself pondering new thoughts and questions regarding my history of having once been a student nurse. I have to agree with the description of the traditional nursing curriculum of being teacher-centered which fostered isolation, fear and anxiety. Reading this is an explorative journey for the nurse and for nurse educators. It leaves the reader with hope that nursing education can rise to the challenge to integrate new pedagogies. I would recommend this book for the serious reader of educational philosophies. ... Read more

We want to be able to share those ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS with you now and do it in a way that is both engaging and, most importantly, memorable!

All of us remember what a lifesaver mnemonics were during our basic sciences, particularly when it came time for exams and tensions were running high. Memory aids saved us tons of time and always improved performance. But there are astonishingly few such resources available in clinical medicine, particularly when it comes to board preparation, certainly not on this magnitude. Clinical mnemonics aren’t only important because they help you remember better and recall quicker! They serve two other very important roles. First, they function as TEMPLATES to help you efficiently sort out, process, and even filter through information you’ve either already acquired or will acquire post-Turbo Mnemonics. In their role as functional templates, you’ll also be able SIFT THROUGH THE JUNK and reach correct diagnoses much more quickly and with greater ease, particularly when faced with cases on the boards or the wards. Secondly, clinical mnemonics also provide a sound FRAMEWORK on which to build your ever-growing medical database. As you acquire new info, you’ll know EXACTLY WHERE TO HANG IT in on your framework and you’ll see exactly how it fits into the bigger picture! That may even be the biggest advantage of all.

Most all of us would agree that intelligence & performance don’t necessarily jive when it comes to standardized exams. Sure, brains matter. Of course, study time matters. Perhaps the most important element, however, is WHAT you study, that is, what MENTAL TOOLSyou take into the exam with you.

Speaking of having the right tools for the job, we highly recommend using Turbo Mnemonics in conjunction with NAIL THE BOARDS, an equally awesome and fully-outlined review of internal medicinefor board exams in approx 350 pages. FRONTRUNNERS’ INTERNAL MEDICINE Q&A REVIEW is the Q&A COMPANION to Nail the Boards, and features over 1200 quick, content-driven Q&A to supplement your own board review. See the last page of this book for more information on these excellent resources.

Here’s to you achieving all your goals in medicine. We’ll see you at the top!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Go with it !!!
I recommend it. This book helped me learn more about foreign medical schools. The book is well organized and worth the money you are paying for.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good place to start but lacks important information
Over the past year I have read everything I can get my hands on about going to medical school overseas. Most of this information I found on the internet. I read literature that I recieved from schools and I talked to members of the schools themselves. This book goes into great detail on a few schools, but only has basic information about most schools. Some of the time the author practically copies out of the school's information packet. A few schools were not even mentioned in this book.

This is an excellent book if you are interested in Ross, St. George, Sackler or AUC. The review on Guadalajara is all right, but all of the others are very marginal. They do provide contact information so that they can be reached for further information, however. The information on what to look for in a school, financial aid, and getting into a US residency is great. I have to say, however, that I have read 95% of this information on the internet many times. This is therefore a good book for someone begining to look into foreign medical school that hasn't yet decided on a school. You will find more detailed information in any medical school information packet than in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped me see the Light
This book was a great springboard for looking into foreign medical schools. With this book, I had actual names and addresses, so it was much easier to conduct a more detailed search on the internet and learn more about specific schools. It also helped me learn what types of characteristics to look for in foreign medical schools in order to be certain that it was an accredited school. Thanks to this book, I rekindled my dream of becoming a doctor, and will be attending one of the schools mentioned in the book! I strongly suggest that anyone thinking of med school abroad read this book; its worth the money!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if looking at the Caribean
This was an ok book if you are just starting to look at Car. schools. If you are just starting it is a for sure good buy. If you have received the school packet from any of these it isn't really worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you!
My thanks to the author for giving me an insight into med schools abroad. At least now I have a starting point from where I can start to research more about med schools outside the U.S. ... Read more

Book Description

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 3 is the final step of the USMLE examination series. The focus of the Step 3 examination is on the clinical sciences, physical examination, data interpretation, and appropriate management in different clinical settings. Review Questions for The USMLE Step 3 Examination contains over 400 'high yield' questions carefully written to cover the material typically found on the actual exam, allowing you to identify areas that need greater focus in your preparation. In addition, like the actual exam, this review book contains high quality color plates in a special section of the book. It is clearly not possible for any text to cover all the material encountered on the actual examination. However, there are certain topics, because of their clinical importance, that are examined year after year. Providing coverage of favorite USMLE topics and an easy-to-use layout, this book familiarizes you with the format of the examination and the areas that need further study in your overall preparation. You can work through this book piece by piece, focusing on the subjects in any order that is convenient for you. Or you may work through the book by simulating the examination and becoming familiar with the format and time limit. Review Questions for the USMLE Step 3 Examination helps you focus and plan the time you need to study, and the areas in which you should put most of your efforts. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor choice for Step 3 review
Not well-written, questions cover esoteric, low-yield points, and the book is way overpriced for the number of questions it contains. Also found several factual errors, making me question the reliability of the information. Look elsewhere for step 3 review, such as Swanson's Family Practice review questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I needed
I needed a question book that I could go through in a few days and feel as though I had covered the "major" areas and high-yield info that I had forgotten since medical school. This book has a lot of nit-picky stuff that isn't asked on the boards (at least not the ones I took a few weeks ago). Not very well-written either. Wish I had flipped thru the pages a little more carefully before I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practice
This book is good prep for step 3. The questions are well written and interesting to work through. Some of them are not as long as they are in the real exam but the format is similar. The clinical pictures are really good quality and the clinical examination tables are helpful for last minute review.

2-0 out of 5 stars yet another of those boring MCQ books.
There are a lot of books out there which overscore this one.The questions presented in the book are not at all up to the mark. After reading some of the questions i felt as if i can write better questions than these.Probably i should consider writing a review book for usmle step 3.The book is over priced too.The only good thing about the book is the very good quality of its pages and pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review Questions for USMLE step 3
Considering the Nature of the USMLE step 3 examination (Ability of a Physician to solve practical medical problem), I found this book extrememly useful. The authors approach to contents of the book is very specific and to the point. The answers are well explained with examples and directed to wards appropriate references. I think there should be more questions containing Case vignettes with tiple set items. This format is getting more popular in the USMLE exams. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, but not quite what the doctor ordered...
Let's just say that this book stated the obvious. If you are a minority, the title grabs you, but it does not give much advice that would differ from other books. It shows a list of the different types of doctors and their current salaries as well as how long the residency would last. Helpful, but I could've gotten that information from anywhere. They go on to categorize the medical schools by price. I fail to see what this has to do with minorities. However, I did enjoy reading the book and was grateful that such a book was available. ... Book Description

Few outsiders realize that student illness is frequently, and ironically, a by-product of medical training. This unique study by a medical doctor and trained anthropologist debunks popular myths of expertise and authority which surround the medical establishment and asks provoking questions about the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge within the field. In detailing all levels of basic training in a London medical school, the author describes students' 'official' activities (that is, what they need to do to qualify) as well as their 'unofficial' ones (such as their social life in the bar).

This insider's exposé should prompt a serious reconsideration of abuses in a profession which has a critical influence over untold lives. In particular, it suggests that the structures and discourses of power need to be re-examined in order to provide satisfactory answers to sensitive questions relating to gender and race, the dialogue between doctor and patient and the mental stability of students under severe stress.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great relief and a great read
In the fall I will begin my first semester as a medical school student. I find the prospect of gross anatomy terrifying, and this book did an excellent job of lessening my anxiety towards the course and towards the ordeal that is medical school itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Glimpse Into the 1st Year of Med School!
As a premedical student, I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of work...It examines the physical and emotional aspects of a first year med student quite well. A must-read for anyone contemplating a career in medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and insightful account of a unique experience
The author provides the reader with an opportunity to experience something unique and different -- human dissection. For those involved in medical education, the dissectioin experience is portrayed in a sensitive, insightful and accurate manner. The author's essays and illustrations of the dissections by Versalius provides a sensory of history and meaning that any health propfessions student about to take gross anatomy would find fscinating. This book is must reading for any first year medical student and should be on anyone's list who is concerned with the education of health professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all medical professionals!
First Cut provides an insider's view of what really happens in the "twilight zone" of the anatomy lab. Carter has followed a group of medical students through their initial fears, failures, and eventual triumphs as they learn to cope with the human aspects of cutting up cadavers. As they do so, they gain a quiet respect and admiration for the people that, through their deaths, have given the ultimate gift of learning. This book should be required reading for all in the medical profession!

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book on a Saturday. Straight through.
I read this book on a Saturday. Straight through. It was that interesting. You might find yourself slowly turning pages, afraid to see what is around the corner, like trying to time when to cover your eyes in the scary movies of your youth. You might find yourself studying the exquisitely detailed engravings from the 1400's. You might find yourself learning new words and new insights into words you already knew. You might look at yourself and others differently after reading this book. You will definitely learn something, but everyone will learn something different. One thing is certain, you will not be bored. Be prepared for a single sitting siege and choose your snack foods carefully--spaghetti, pudding, and the like are ill-advised. After reading this book, you'll probably start exercising again anyway. You'll have to read it to find out why. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars overrated
While this book definitly is funny, it is to pompus and arrogant. I really don't care that he never went to microbiology at 8:00am. Drayer puts down nurses and just about every else who works in the medical field, but Dermatologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ!
Just as you don't have to be a doctor to love "ER," you'll love Drayer's essays even if you've never been to medical school! Hilarious and insightful, these no-holds-barred accounts of life in the medical trenches give readers a realistic insiders view of medicine that none of the other sappy, ultra-PC, "I was so moved when I saw a baby being born" books do.

Like Woody Allen in scrubs, Drayer takes us on the kind of journey you love to watch, but are thankful that it's HIS experience, and not yours. (Although, med students will definitely recognize these experiences!) A book to check out!

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it!
It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars He's my kind of dermatologist!
Currently living with a medical student, I can truly attest that most of Dr. Drayer's book is 100% correct. If you think medical school is just like the brochure this is your reality check. This is the kind of medical book all patients should read to see that doctors are screwy humans just like them, not gods. Anyone who thought that this book was sub-par missed the entire point! I hope Dr. Drayer provides us with another look into his world soon.

1-0 out of 5 stars A typical surgeon: everything but surgery is beneath him.
This author's bitter portrayal of everything medical save surgery is a bit irritating. As a current 4th year medical student this book reminded me of most people at the end of their clinical rotations: irritated by everything. His rantings are repetitive, tiring, and uncreative. ... Read more
