1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
My roommates and I bought this book together looking for a comprehensive overview of each specialty-- typical practice settings, level of competitiveness (for residency spots, fellowship spots, and beyond), income, and future prospects/directions for each field. We wanted numbers with an objective interpretation. We couldn't find such information anywhere else, and, unfortunately, we didn't find it here either.

This book is a hodgepodge of trite quotes and whatever the author found during a 15-minute search on Medline-- I know because I tried it myself, and I got the same handful of articles that she cites. The information she presents is often outdated or taken out of context, and is generally too vague and/or superficial to be of use in any case.

I cannot imagine how anyone other than the author herself would rate this book highly. Save your money.

I wish I could recommend some more useful resource, but I still haven't found it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I decided to give this book a chance, even though I was skeptical that someone who never went to medical school could give advice on choosing a specialty. Her book didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. I wanted to learn about what really makes each medical specialty unique, but the "question and answer" format made each chapter almost identical. The answers were so vague and non-specific that you could apply them to almost any specialty. I finished each specialty chapter wondering "I forget - what specialty was I reading about again?" Definitely an over-rated book, but perhaps because there are no other books out there on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have to every medical student !
Most medical students are hesitant to choose their medical specialty. No book until now has solved this dilemma in a proper way except this one! I was asking myself this question before graduation, and I saw this book at the Toronto Bookstore 2 years ago, but didn't want to buy it cuz one of my friends told me that there were many web sites which will help you choose your future specialty. Unfortunately, I didn't find a comprehensive book or at an article or a website about that. Then after graduation, I had the chance to visit Toronto Bookstore again and decided this time to buy it!

Part I: The Challenge of Specialty Choice including (Planning your specialty choice, Finding a speciality that is right for you, Considering your options, Career planning in an uncertain world).

Part II: The Specialties and Subspecialties including: Allergy and immunology, Anesthesiology, Colon and rectal surgery, Dermatology, Emergency medicine, Family medicine, Internal medicine (Cardiology, Endocrinology and metabolism, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Infectious diseases, Medical oncology, Nephrology, Pulmonary disease, Rheumatology), Medical genetics, Neurological surgery, Neurology, Nuclear medicine, Obstetric and gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic surgery, Otolaryngology - Head and nech surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics, Physical medicine and rehabilitation, Plastic surgery, Preventive medicine, Psychiatry, Radiation oncology, Diagnostic radiology, Thoracic surgery, Urology.

A composite picture of each specialty is drawn in terms of (General information, Residency information, American Board of medical specialties certification, Supply and projections, Economic status and types of practice, Further information, Why choose this specialty, What do you like most about this specialty, What do you like least about this specialty, What is your typical daily schedule, What abilities and talents are important in this specialty, what personality traits best characterize this specialty, what advice would you give to medical students interested in this specialty, what are the future challenges to this specialty, Job values of this specialty)

Part III: Emerging Specialty Areas including: (Addiction medicine, Administrative medicine, Adolescent medicine, Critical care medicine, Geriatric medicine, Hospice and palliative medicine, Sports medicine, Women's health).

Part IV: Practice Options inlcuding (Clinical pathways, Non-clinical pathways, Geographic location).

Part V: After You Have Chosen a Specialty including (Planning for residency, Military programs, The couples match, Shared-schedule residencies, What happens if you don't match, Changing specialties during residency and afterwards).

Appendix which contains: Quesionnaire, First-year postgraduate positions offered through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), Residency competitiveness tables, Summary profile scores, Selected web sites.

This book comes in 331 pages. I hope there will be an update for it since its last 3rd edition (1999). However, it is the MOST comprehensive and useful book for medical students. I sincerely advise every med student to buy it.

Great work Dr. Anita Taylor. Keep up the good work!

5-0 out of 5 stars A VERY helpful and thorough book!!
This book is filled with answers to the common questions a prospective medical student might ask a practicing physician. Every specialty is reviewed with the same general and specific questions: "How much do they make?"; "How long is the residency?"; What is your typical day like?"; and "What do you like the least and best in your field?" Ms Taylor also reviews emerging specialties. This book was EXTREMELY helpful and I recommend it to all newly accepted and attending medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
I will be beginning Med School this fall, and I was still questioning what field would make me most happy. This book was able to solve that mystery for me. This edition is new, and updated, and all of her data are recent. She guides you through every field of medicine, including new fields like Medical Genetics, and Radiation Oncology. This is a must read for any Med student (or Premed) who is unsure of their future goals. This book will remain usefull throughout Med School, as it also contains important information about the residency match program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! Great place to start!
Every single person considering medical school needs to read this book. It has great tips for medical students at all walks of the game, from high school students to the nontraditional student (like me). It has tips I haven't seen anywhere else... like buying the MSAR when you're a freshman at the latest and working backwards from what schools want, and making yourself that person. This book would be an especially wonderful gift for the student who "thinks" they want to be a doctor, but doesn't yet know what the journey will be like. It covers pre-college preparations, college requirements and tips, the admissions process, choosing a school, the MCAT, financial aid, and what medical school will be like once you're there. More in-depth references will be needed for the MCAT, but this is a great get-started book.

My only complaint is Appendix A (of schools)... some info is incorrect, and some medical schools are completely missing from the list. But, that's information readily available elsewhere. The book is worth the price for the tips alone!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not 4 Everyone
This book provides an easy to read and follow game plan for those seeking to enter the medical field. However, the book is not for the "non-traditional" student (those looking at medical school durring or after their Pre-Graduate years). It would be best to read it, as the book sugests itself, as a High School Student. But hey, if you've ever wondered about what it takes to become a Dr or your just a big ER fan, the books actually a pretty good read. ... Read more

Book Description

Winner of the prestigious AJN Book of the Year award, Teaching in Nursing is a key resource in the dynamic structure and function of preparing the nurses of the future for teaching careers. Faculty must be conditioned to look forward and teach in new ways; diversity of students, curriculum development, redesigning of health care systems, and information and technology advances are just a few of the growing challenges that facing those who choose to instruct. This result is largely due to the editors' standing in the nursing community and their ability to secure only the very best contributors. This is only 3-in-1 nursing education resource available! While most other texts address only one component of teaching, Teaching in Nursing covers three-teaching, curriculum, and evaluation. It provides comprehensive, contemporary guidelines to help instructors meet the day-to-day challenges of teaching. Instructors will also find the guidance they need to ensure that their teaching practices reflect the evolving health care environment. The authors reference current literature in nursing education, as well as the classics in nursing, education, and other fields.Judy Halstead chairs the task force on "Development of Nurse Educator Competencies" for the National League for Nursing, and is on the front line of influencing the trends in teaching education. Dr. Halstead is also the program evaluator for the CCNE. Both Drs. Halstead and Billings serve on the NLN Think Tank for Nursing Education and are frequently sought as educational consultants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review
This book has a lot of important information that anyone taking the USLME should know. It has pretty good questions and answers and I like how the book explains the various USMLE topics. It's much easier reading through this book then some long textbooks. However, I also used the following which is also available on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This questions were on target with the type of questions asked on the microbiology section of the boards. Get both books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helps to review small importand details
I have just passed Step 1 and I do believe that this book helped me to get a good score. Despite the fact that the questions in this book do not mimic the exam's questions they highlight many details, which may be missed even in good review books. If you use only one book to study one subject, you will definitely miss some important facts. To cover those facts I did the following. First, I studied the subject using the main review book and answered questions in it. Than I answered questions in this book and always found missed important details, which were not mentioned in my main textbooks but were covered here. In other words, I would advise to read this book before the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to date
This review book is not up to date, specifically the questions are in a format nowhere near USMLE's exam. Memorize the newest edition of First Aid.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have time, but better exist
I like this book. I really do. However, there are better books out there (Princeton Review and J&S, for example). The tests are hard, a bit too detailed in their demands, and not as applicable to the new testing format. Still, it's a good way to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent question and answer content.
The book gives you tremendous amount of practice with questions covering an organized amount of subject matter while giving complete and easy to understand answers. The intergration of the answers into multiple subject matter is one of the books best aspects. If you are preparing for the USMLE this book is a must ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review for the Boards
Outstanding supplement to other review materials. Easy to carry with you and read between patients, classes, or while 'taking a break' from heavy written materials.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to date
These cards contain a fair amount of outdated information, especially in the internal medicine section. Some cover way too broad an area to really be useful in flashcard format; on the other hand, some cards are extremely brief. The lack of consistent format is also frustrating. I was quite disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal quick review material
I have found this flash fact "book" very useful prepartion material for step 3.The facts presented as questions on the front with answers on the back are ideal for quick review.I especially found it useful in a metro ride. Of the five stars ,3 are for comprehensiveness and 2 are for being succinct.

3-0 out of 5 stars good facts
these cards are very helpful in your study for usmle step 2 but you need other sources for your preperation

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding supplement to studying for the USMLE Boards
This is a comprehensive, yet concise overview of clinical medicine as needed for the USMLE National Boards. The best feature is the question-answer format which challenge the reader and simultaneously allow for outstanding comprehension of high-yield information which shows up on the exams. ... Read more

How much is Patrick Leonardi paying you to say good things about his Microbiology book?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great study tool
This is a great study aid because it helps in retaining information for exams. It does this because it is easy to understand and written in an organized fashion. I also would recommend the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
by Patrick Leonardi
(ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book was very thorough and showed me the kind of questions to be ready for on my exams in medical microbiology class in my med school. Both proved quite helpful. Both are must buys. In fact, I have a friend in a different med school and she used these same books and also got good grades in her medical microbiology class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thank god I'm not the only one!!!
I worked through the 6 biological sections and found multiple mistakes. Eventhough my copy is from 96, they still haven't changed the test format in the 2000 revision. In fact all of the incorrect answers are still in the new book.

A few caveats; 1. the review sections aren't the worst. I read through them for a general level of understanding. For any in depth information refer to a textbook. 2. The physical science section is difficult. However, if you can work through the tests it will help..

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not as good as it promises to be.
Although this book does have six full exams as promised, they are not in proper mcat format and do not match the difficulty level of the real exam. It is an O.K. book if you want to reinforce the basics, but your performance on these exams would be a poor indicator on how you would do on the actual test.

1-0 out of 5 stars what a waste
this is a really terrible book! The verbal section has only 7 passages. It really messes your timing up when you are really taking the test. Plus, the questions are a joke. The physical sciences and bio. sections are filled with errors, which required way too many calculations in a timed test. The mcat is about timing, strategy, and intelligence.
