Quite Interesting
An interseting book, but I much prefer the work of Ed McCabe, the real master of Oxygen Therapies. His latest book Flood Your Body with Oxygen which I could not put down, gets to grip with the subject in a fascinating way and style that Altman does not have. Overall it is a fair book.

The most informative practical book
The presentation is clear and one really appreciates the therapy avaialable regarding it.However more information is
required regarding the techniques used in developing ozone generators.

Some good ideas, some bad science
When I studied genetics in college, the professor walked into class at the end of the semester, and announced that he was going to lecture on the last chapter after all.

"I was going to skip this chapter," he said, "but the way in which it was written was SO irritating to me, that I decided to cover it anyway."

I feel a little like that at the moment.

This book covers an interesting and important area of alternative medical therapy. There's a lot of good in this area, and there's much less potential for harm than in many such areas.

But there's also some very bad science. For example -- and I choose this one because you can look it up in the sample pages -- the author wants to you believe that there is proportionally three times as much Oxygen in dirt than in the air.

The author further claims that approximately two-thirds of your body is Oxygen. (In fact, there are more than twice as many Hydrogen atoms in your body than Oxygen -- I did mention that I'm a biologist, didn't I?)

And did you know that all cancer cells are anaerobic? (NOBODY can make human cells of any kind live or grow without oxygen -- not even Nobel prize winners from the 1960s.)

And so on, throughout much of the book.

But that doesn't mean that every recommendation is wrong -- there are a few things that I wouldn't touch if you paid me, but there are others that are helpful and more that are at least harmless -- but the theoretical basis is really quite inaccurate.

So if you will promise not to believe the theoretical underpinnings, then you might get some useful information out of this book. In short, you should use your common sense with this book -- just like you would for anything else related to your health.

P.S. Ozone, by the way, is NOT "energized oxygen"; it's three Oxygen molecules unstably and briefly linked together (O3 for short). Your cells CAN NOT use O3 for metabolic purposes. You MUST have O2 (normal oxygen gas) for that purpose.

But don't worry: O3 readily degrades into normal/useful O2, plus a single Oxygen free radical (but not usually enough of it to do you any real harm before it reacts with something else into a stable state).

Oxygen Healing Therapies
Major oxygen therapies are referenced in this easy-to-read text.
The author covers major applications across a wide area of disease processes. There are some interesting applications
for heart defects with infectious endocarditis, AIDS and the
arthritic diseases. Heart baths in ozonated cardio-solutions
utilizing a heart-lung machine showed a reduction in death rate
complications according to the author's citations.
The use of autohomologous immunotherapy is described for
cancer treatments. Injections into the rectal tip provide
a direct mechanism for introducing ozone into the bloodstream
with positive results cited by Dr.Donsbach. An antioxidant
protocol is provided so that beta carotene, vitamins B,C and E
can be introduced utilizing organic foods. A raw food diet
is described from writings of the late Ms Wigmore DD, ND.
Her protocol is a radical departure from the standard junk-food
diet containing processed foods, sugar, gluten and animal
products/ bi-products. The Wigmore protocol is designed to
complement other medicinal protocols to accelerate the healing
process. Intestinal cleansing protocols are referenced to
discharge toxic matter and mucoid from the colon and small
intestine in order to promote natural healing. Some practitioners
favor combining this protocol with enzyme therapies aimed at
optimizing food digestion.A very positive experience is described
for gastroenteritis . It utilizes rectal insufflation to
introduce oxygen and ozone into the body with a cited cure rate
of 95% for children having had ozone therapy. The benefits
for hepatitis were more significant in hepatitis A patients;
whereas, the experience with hepatitis B remissions was more
problematic. The work is a good supplement to conventional
and alternative medicinal therapies. It may help where other
protocols have failed or require significant supplementation
in order to be effective maximally.

New Dimensions in Healing
This revised and expanded edition includes all the new research, information and developments in oxygen healing therapies since the first edition in 1995. It is a well-written consumer guide to bio-oxidative therapies that highlights the therapeutic benefits of hydrogen peroxide and ozone and the methods in which they are used. The good news is that these therapies promise to bring relief to millions because the substances are inexpensive and affordable. What's more, they have very few adverse effects when correctly administered. The difference between oxidation (free radical activity) and oxygenation (increase in oxygen molecules) is made clear at the start. The clinical use of ozone and hydrogen peroxide has been amply documented in medical literature, yet ignored by the medical mainstream. At last its value is being discovered by a growing number of health-wise consumers. These two substances hold great promise for the treatment of some of the major diseases confronting humanity and they form part of a new healing paradigm involving safe, effective, inexpensive and natural forms of therapy. The chapter on herbs and supplements includes interesting information on inter alia Beta Carotene, the vitamins, Coenzyme Q10, trace elements, minerals, Echinacea, garlic, Gingko Biloba and green tea. Under Mind-Body Healing the author discusses psycho-neuro-immunology, how to nurture the emotions, mind and spirit and the use of creative visualization. This excellent book certainly makes a point: that the proven safety, effectiveness and medical applications of hp and oxygen warrant far more attention than they have been receiving from the press and the medical and scientific communities. Fortunately these therapies are in use in clinics and hospitals in certain countries like Germany and this knowledge is spreading. In an age of increasing medical costs and complex medical procedures, many health-care consumers are looking for safe and effective therapies that will naturally enhance their innate healing powers. The author has done an excellent job of stimulating discussion by presenting the facts of these therapies, thereby giving consumers the necessary information to make informed and intelligent decisions regarding health-care options. Excellent book for health care professionals and lawyers!
This book was wonderful! A must for medical students, law students and both lawyers/doctors. Puts the reality of the true duty of a "professional" into perspective. Truly a delight. not very practical
Everyone seems to buy this book as a reflex, but I hardly have used it in the last year I've had it as a PMR resident. It can be helpful sometimes when preparing a brief topical discussion, but it is not specific enough in terms of what should be done clinically. It's so big it's difficult to take it anywhere with you if you need to study for the boards.

Faith Building, Faith Inspiring, Faithfully True
Coming from a Fundamental Baptist background, I was extremely skeptical about this book and the ideas in it. I must admit though when I reasoned with my spirit and not my mind, I could truly understand the Biblical relevance of healing and miracles for today! After applying the principles taught in this book, my husband's legs have grown to be even, his spine was straightened, my arms are now the same length, my spine has straightened, and my husband has administered healing to others as well. Excellent, excellent book.

Even if you don't agree with everything in the book, as I did not, you will see the love of Jesus in the authors and the fruit of their absolutely child-like faith.

It works in Brazil, too!
In 1996, I was invited to teach in a Spiritual Warfare Bible College in Goiania, Brazil. During that year I was given one of Charles and Frances Hunter's books entitled, "How to Heal the Sick". That little book made such an impact in my life as I began to pray for the sick everywhere and they were getting healed. I recall studying and applying the principles described in the book, and teaching and encouraging my students to do the same. Some of the students got healed during the classes after experiencing God's power, then they themselves began to pray for people outside the classroom: in their homes, in churches, in hospitals, and on the streets. People were getting healed on a daily basis! They were being healed from all kinds of sicknesses and diseases as well as delivered from Satan's bondage.

An inspiring collection
In the past, Dr. Diamond has on the whole confined himself to one major area of interest in each of his books. In the Life Energy in Music series he focuses on various aspects of music, The Healer: Heart and Hearth is concerned mainly with the role of the therapist or healer, Re-Mothering and its Experience examines the importance of our relationships with our mothers, and so on. In Facets of a Diamond, however, Dr. Diamond draws together all the aspects of his life and the experiences that make him the therapist that he is. But, more than being just an auto-biography, this book introduces us to the possibility that we are all therapists, whatever our profession or station in life. After reading this book I felt inspired to consider how my choices and decisions are determining the pattern of my own life, and how I can best develop and manifest my own philosophy day by day.

I think that this is one of the most remarkable traits of Dr. Diamond's writing: that, instead of claiming to have found the one true path to enlightenment, he presents his own ideas and thought in such a way as to be a springboard for the reader's.

Dr. Diamond has written a book which covers a wide range of the areas to which he has turned his attention over many years. One of the most intriguing aspects of Dr. Diamond's writing is his focus on how insights and information are presented. A treasure trove of inspiration
I find this book a great inspiration - worth returning to repeatedly to stimulate my thoughts and uplift my spirit. It is as truly "multi-faceted" as its title implies - a reflection of the many-faceted author, Dr. John Diamond. In it, I find parts that apply to my personal, professional, artistic and inner lives. I can open it to any section and find a gem - and then I find myself engrossed by the wonderful stories, quotations, poems and aphorisms. It is full of humor and heart. I highly recommend it.

An Absolutely Brilliant Book
As the title suggests, this book shows facets-many facets-of the healing work of Dr. John Diamond. It is, however, far from being just another self-help book. Diamond obviously knows what he's talking about, but what makes this book so great is that he talks about the essence of life in such a clear, direct, friendly, and sometimes even humorous way. It's very hard not to be touched by the many little poems, aphorisms, and stories in the book.

Diamond discusses various aspects of healing: the "true therapist," the "patient" (but much better if the patient is a "student" who wants to learn what to do himself, rather than to be passive and let the healer do the work), creativity, aspiration, and many others. He offers deep insight in the human spirit, much of it new, although often based on centuries-old philosophies.

The most wonderful part of the book to me as a musician and music teacher are the many pages (thankfully!) where Diamond speaks about music. He explains how music is such a beautiful metaphor for life, and also how music-much, much more than being mere entertainment-can really help people: "If only we all were singing-always."

Healing Really Does Make Our Hearts Happy
Healing Makes Our Hearts Happy is a beautifully written and photographed book of the Jul'hoansi people of the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Not only does the book give an excellent description of the history and culture of this society but also gives strong support to anyone who is striving to live as their hearts direct. I appreciated the style of intimacy with which this book is written. It is easy to find a level of familiarity with the members of this society as the authors weave their stories into a whole picture of a culture. The complex healing rituals performed by these healers were made understandable through their stories and photographs. The threat of extinction of this important part of the culture of the African people and all people is well presented by this example of the Jul'hoansi. We are all effected positively and negatively by the rapid, deep influences of technology. Healing Makes Our Hearts Happy is a work that leads us once again to a place of sensitivity concerning this inevitable struggle of conscousness. Helping physicians recapture their focus
I bought a copy for myself, and now I am trying to give a copy to everybody I know who is involved in patient care. Most of us went into the medical field with noble aspirations to take care of others and in doing so, to grow ourselves as human beings. The process of going through a medical education debases in many respects our initial aspirations. I read this book and found myself recentered. Dr. Lown approaches medicine as an opportunity to glean from the people for whom he cares. The book is filled with anecdotes gathered from decades of doctoring. The stories lead the reader along the same journey that the author has taken in coming to a sense of himself as a healer. The characters whom have filled his life are interesting and the story of Dr. Lown's personal journey from medical student, to researcher to teacher and master clinician, is fascinating. I highly recommend this book. It has changed the way that I approach my work and given me a zest for opportunities to grow in this profession.

An Inspirational work for Aspiring Medical Students
In a profession dominated increasingly by science and technology, it is heartening to hear a courageous voice who spoke forcefully and emphatically against the dehumanization of medicine and for the urgent need to return to the traditional ethos of medicine. This coming no less from a physician of Dr Lown's stature and credentials, a technological wizard who had given the world the first cardioverter and DC defribillator. and yet managed to stay aloof and above the lure of medical scientific and technical sophistry which had captured the awe and fantasy of many of today's medical students and doctors alike. Debunking the myth of the omnipotence of clinical medicine, Dr Lown sought to reconcile the divide between the art and science of medicine, advocating a more humane approach towards the management of patients. He is both a philosopher and a healer, equipped with an open mind and divergent mindset extending beyond the normal confines of medical practice. Outstanding medical humanism
This is an incredible book. Written by the cardiologist who helped bring us DC cardioversion, and lidocaine for arrhythmias, it surprisingly focuses on the human aspects of medicine.

He makes several critical points: the most important task for us as physicians is to first listen to our patients. He encourages us to make our diagnoses and prognoses on the basis of careful history taking and examination, rather than by laboratory testing. He also exhorts us to take the responsibility of appropriately reassuring and encouraging our patients, rather than just always hedging our bets to cover our malpractice worries.

The book is very well written and edited, and contains dozens of fascinating doctor/patient vignettes. He explores the boundaries of the patient/doctor relationship, and is well aware of the times it leads him astray.

He is not afraid to interject his personal religious philosophy (as an agnostic from a Jewish background) but respects those with other opinions.

This text contains far more valuable information for physicians than any biochemistry or histology text. Hopefully wise Deans will make it required reading for their medical school

Promising, but not yet there
What "Children with Starving Brains" gives is an up-to-date (2002) review of possible bio-medical causes of autism, and for each cause, a relevant course of treatment. The book gives an overview of such causal theories such as leaky-gut, viral infection, heavy metal poisoning, and more. This is the first book I've seen that lists specific and mostly common medical diagnostic tests of blood, urine, stool, and how these tests can suggest a possible bio-medical cause and thus a relevant course of treatment. This is certainly a more reasoned approach to treatment than the older "just try everything until something works".

There are several red flags, though. The author's 14th granddaughter was diagnosed in 1996, and from that time she switched her medical specialty to autism. The book is largely based on her own reading, discussions and clinical experience over the last six years. Somehow, six years doesn't seem long enough to be sufficiently expert on autism treatment to write a book. Her conviction that most cases of autism have a bio-medical cause, and that these autism will be reversed when the cause is removed seems more dogmatic than factual. She cites statistics like "90% of autism has some bio-medical cause" and "bio-medical treatments are more effective before age 5", but she doesn't include the source of these facts, leading me to believe she is relying more on her own observations than on studies. Without any evidence she includes ADD, ADHD and dyslexia in the autism spectrum throughout the book, suggesting the same root causes and treatments for these disorders. The tone of the book alternately reflects the title, then the subtitle: sometimes leaning towards the sensational and emotional, other times the clinical and factual. Strangely, an appendix presents the argument to just accept individuals with autism as they are, and not treat their condition. Overall, however, the book keeps perspective and balance, which keeps it credible.

The only mention of ABA (which I personally advocate for) I could find in the book was in the foreword. The author thanks numerous people at length. Second on the list the author thanks Dr. Lovaas, noting that her granddaughter greatly benefited from ABA treatment. I wish the author had emphasized this point a little more strongly throughout the book. Removing the cause of autism is important, but these children still need intervention to help them adapt around any neurological damage caused before being cured, and to help them catch up to their peers.

Overall, the proponents of the bio-medical causes of autism need to keep working on the theory and treatment of autism. Broadly, this book indicates that bio-medical theories of autism have developed a great deal and will continue to do so. A few more years, and maybe some of these causality theories will be conclusively proven right, and the corresponding treatments shown to be wonderfully effective. Until then, parents should be aware of such options, but continue to make their treatment decisions carefully.

a must for parents of autistic children
As a parent of an autistic child, I cannot reccommend this book enough. I have read more books than I care to remember on autism. This is the BEST ever written. It has a consice, easy to follow format on all the cutting edge medical treatment that is helping my son and thousands of others.
If you are a parent of a newly diagnosed child, you will read this book, highlight it, reread it,and use it as a constant resource. I wish this book and all these treatments were around when my son was 2. He is 7, but continues to make improvements that never would happen without the medical interventions listed so clearly in this book. I hope Dr McCandless published a Part 2 for any new treatments that come along, and I know they will.

A MUST READ FOR PARENTS FIGHTING AUTISM
I have been fighting autism for over eight years. My daughter has made significant progress, but still has a way to go. I wish that this book had been available when we first started out. It is a concise guide to the current biomedical treatments that are being used successfully in fighting against autism today. It is absolutely the #1 book that I recommend to other parents to read, especially newcomers or people that are interested, but don't have loads of time to search for information. I have a deep and abiding respect for Dr. McCandless and her openness to share herself so unselfishly with all the parents that bombard her with questions. This book is a great resource for you, the parent AND for your doctor in understanding ways to treat autistic children. The American Academy of Pediatrics needs to read this book and put these medical tests and treatments in place for all doctors serving the autistic community. A must read for people struggling with Autistic SPECTRUM
This book is the answer for starting to cure your child who has an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. What is Autistic Spectrum Disorder? Think of any disease or syndrome that is caused by chemicals in the brain not working correctly. My 5 year old was diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, a lesser form of Autism) and ADHD, since doing the tests recommended in the book and beginning the usually very simple and safe treatments, our daughter has made huge leaps in development and displays much less autistic behavior than she used to. Inspirational

Thought-provoking - A book for the healer in all of us.
This book has changed the way I think about my home, myself and my life. The style is lovely and clear ... the poems concise and down-to-earth ... and the prose just as fine! REMARKABLE
This is a remarkable book on the 'divine' powers of healing inherent in each of us. I very strongly recommend it to anyone suffering from physical (including life-threatening) or emotional illness, and am ordering more copies to pass on to friends and others. In my opinion, it is much more practical and effective than another excellent book "You Cannot Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought" (which I gave to a friend who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer at a major cancer center, and told that she only had 'six months to live' - she is alive healthy 15 years later, with no trace of the cancer). ... Dr. Farber's Psychotherapy
A worthy effort for a non-writer. More of a work of catharsis than anything else. There is a lot of repetition in this book; some sentences are repeated verbatim a few paragraphs later. The poems are atrocious. As a fellow physician and Baylor grad, I applaud the fact that he has overcome some tremendous obstacles in his life (albeit self-inflicted). I wish him well.

Insightful and a good read
This is a wonderful book that explained my questions about the doctor/patient relationship. I think I am now a better patient and better understand the role of doctors in my life. I gave a copy to my cousin who is in medical school and she loved it as well.

A Look at the Heart of a Doctor's Life!
Behind the White Coat takes the reader into the heart and soul of a physician. Dr. Farber shares with us the trials and tribulations that come with being a doctor in today's world. He also highlights those life changing and wonderful events that make it all worthwhile. This is a very good read and is highly recomended.
