5-0 out of 5 stars Great atlas for histology
I found this book to be a great resource for my medical histology class. The pictures helped me to remember key concepts for on my histology lab. The difference between squamous and transitional epithelium can really only be appreciated with the help of this atlas since it is harder to describe it in words. If you really want to know the type of medical histology questions asked on histology medical exams, get the following which is on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me to know what type of questions to prepare for on my exams. I give both books 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for medical students
Excellent photomicrographs with explanations of each. Good review of each subject at each chapter. Can be used alone as a review book.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent atlas
The atlas was excellent and easy to refer to. The text, while usable, is brief and has much more information than was necessary at my undergraduate medical level. I recommend using this as an atlas and using a different text (such as Wheater) for accompanying explanations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Theory and Practice of Histotechnology
An excellent book for someone who is starting to learn about histology. It includes basic information that is helpful and may be used as a guideline for personal lab work. In addition, one of the chapters includes the commonly used medical terminology and lab mathematics, so if you're new in business, this is an extremely helpful chapter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to put down!
I agree with the Nobel Laurate quoted on the back of this book, - It's hard to put down! Interesting, well structured, highly readable book on general pathology with focus on the basic unit; the cell. I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in pathology, and especially the curious student who wants to know more than what't needed to pass an exam! Best medical text book I've read so far!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Intelligent Guide to Morbid Human Biology
Due in part to television, pathology holds a curious fascination for laymen and physicians alike. In medicine, pathologists always have the last word and frequently the first word. This humanistic treatment of pathology is appropriate reading for physicians, students, and broadly educated persons. It is immensely readable and with a gracious style that avoids the usual ghastly technical jargon of even the "best" pathology textbooks. It could be titled, "Pathologic Epistemology" or a "Thinking Man's Guide to the Human Species". Majno and his wife have returned to Virchow's maxim that disease happens in cells, the cells in tissues, the tissues in organs and the organs in people. If you think of yourself as literate this book will teach you about the inner you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for general pathology !
This is absolutely a great book. It has a lot of positive aspects: 1. easy to read 2. enough details 3. nice anecdotes which are written in smaller letters 4. easy to find what your looking for by bold, italic and underlined words 5. good table contents 6. good diagrams as well 7. at the end of each chapter a good summery

You may ask "If it's so good why 4 stars instead of 5?". Well, the pictures are in black and white. I like coloured books myself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas
I'm a med student and found this atlas to be a great source for studying for the my class exams. The pictures are great and it makes the facts easier to learn. Squamous cell epithelium never looked so good. I also used the following:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me with test preparation because it showed me what to focus on and the type of questions that were asked on my tests. I highly recommend both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent atlas.
I found the color atlas to be extremely helpful. The images are very clear and structures are labeled. It's a useful guide for medical students new to histology.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a the name says just an atlas
You need to know from other sources to understand the pictures.
Quality of the paper and pictures are good but unfortunately there is hardly any explanation what they are, what the functions are. It is not just because they run out of space, one side of the page is generally empty. I guess it is the concept that needs to be changed. Yes pictures are worth tousands of words but it would be much nices with some talk.Book is divided into systems. Book is also missing a short introduction that could have been very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Atlas Available
I've done a lot of searching into histo atlases. This one has the best photographs of all I saw. They are untouched by artwork like other atlases. They are the real thing, which I think is important for future practice with the microscope. There are two problems with this atlas. First, although the photographs are organized quite logically, there is no boldface title above each one. It is annoying when you are browsing the book. I remedied this by writing in my own titles, but it would be SO much nicer. The second thing is there is no histological information contained with the photos. There are only small description boxes next to each. Unfortunately to my knowledge there is no such thing as a histology atlas that has high-yield histo information included. I think if the company who made this atlas adds high-yield info the resulting book would be used by every medical student in the country. What's ironic is there is so much white space in this atlas. It's as if the publisher intended to add in info boxes, but never got around to it. All we need are small bites of info like exists in the High-Yield series with the beautiful photos in this atlas.

If you are the publishers of this book, heed my advice and you'll make a fortune. Medical students like to have everything wrapped up in neat little packages instead of cross-references several sources. It makes studying so much easier. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Text, Needs more diagrams
This is a good histology text to read and understand. It has not only structural descriptions, but has related physiology and this makes the book interesting to read. With mastering histology in the first year of the medical school, pathology would be easy to learn in the future. This book makes histology a more interesting subject.
Advantages:
1.Lucid style in writing
2.Sentence type headings makes the essence of the following text very clear.
3.Most of the details that you need in the histology course could be found in this single volume.
4.Atlas is separately included in the end of every chapter other than the regular diagrams between the texts.
Disadvantages:
1.Lack of line diagrams- without a good number of line diagrams it would be difficult to grasp the material for a normal student like me.
2.No clear chapter outline in the beginning of each chapter. The Wheater's histology has an edge over this in this aspect.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I really felt that this text could have given a little more. You will need to buy an atlas to supplement the text, but I do like the explanations given with the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for my medical histology class
I found this book very helpful and packed with good info on histology. This book is quite thorough and is essential for any medical student taking a class in histology. The pictures are quite helpful because it was easier to identify simple epithelia verses squamous epithelia as one example. If you want a great study guide for the type of questions teachers ask get the following: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN; 0971999686)
The last book helped me to focus on the type of questions asked on my exams. I was recommended this book from a few friends who have already taken the class. They said it helped them get good grades. I guess they were right. With the help of these two books I did wonderfully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I liked the book very much for it has Histology with some Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology included. Of course these text takes space from the book and reduces the amount of slides but each slide is given similar information and not just identification. Time to time comparative information. I found this book very useful when compared to simple Histology Atlases. You may need another Histology Atlas for more pictures if you are interested but this book is very simple and to the point all encompassing

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Text, Poor Atlas
This book was one of two required for a graduate course in Histology. If you must take a Histology course in graduate school or medical school, I would recommend purchasing a separtate atlas, especially if you are a novice or have limited availability to quality slides. I personally recommend diFiore because it has multiple atlas plates for each tissue with different magnifications and stains. It is also reasonably priced. The text in Ross is very well written and presents the material in a compact, to the point style. This allows the student to learn the material without searching for what is and is not important. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding atlas for histology students
I'm a med student and found this study guide just awesome. The pictures make histology much easier to learn and helped me of course with my histology lab. For class exams, I used the following which was also awesome: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi, which is also on amazon. This last study guide was quite thorough with the type of questions to look out for on my medical histology exams. It proved very valuable since it helped me get very good grades. Both books are very valuable and should help any med student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Di Fiore's : A Med student's savior
This Atlas is perfect for a first year medical student who has not taken histology before. It is truly better than all the rest since it presents both illustrations and as well as photos. The illustrations in particular are what allow a new student to grasp the major ideas behind a particular slide.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference work for Histology students
I am a senior physiology/neurobiology major taking a course in histology who is fortunate enough to have a copy of Di Fiore's atlas. In fact, I have all but substituted the atlas for the course textbook. Here's why... According to Aristotle, art captures the universal essence of things. In few places have I seen the truth of this claim as clearly as in Di Fiore's Atlas. The illustrations in this remarkable atlas truly present the structural features of tissues and organs in an idealized, universal way that has helped me identify actual, imperfect samples time after time. Not only are the images of the atlas of superb quality; the text ("functional correlations") are also top-class. In fact, Eroschenko's text is what every student dreams of: a streamlined presentation of only the most relevant information, without the choppy feel of an outline. So if you are looking for a histology atlas with excellent illustrations that show the universal features of tissues and organs and a very economical, no-nonsense text, then Di Fiore's Atlas is for you! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great quick reference for the pics!
As a Pathology resident, I love this book. When I'm reading in Robbins and a picture isn't given for an entity, or I want to see more, and bigger, examples of something, I just flip this book open. It isn't meant to be a stand alone text, but the pics are awesome and are a great supplement to any text.

3-0 out of 5 stars plenty images, too clearly text
Milikowski et Berman's Atlas has a lot of full-coloured images(over 1000 images!), taken at microscopic level. Although every image has text for explanation, it is so simply written(20-30 words) that it is not easy for me, a beginner at histo-pathology, to understand well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Of Standards
The decision to buy this book is one of the most apt I have ever made in the medical school. Paulsen gives the rather abstract histology a vivid approach, that engulfs just what is required.

However , illustrations are lacking and because of its compactness, no sentence is to be ignored. Consequently , progress is not very significant and thus inappropriate to rush through the day before the exam. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars life saver
This book is what saved my life in the pathology, microbiology and immunology course at my med school. The book put all the histopathology which was very dense and made unnecessarily complicated by the lecturers and the Robbins PBOD book in a very logical way. It has great micrographs with thorough text accompanying them and is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer of pathology
If you agree that seeing is believing, then this book is for you. Microscopic images with accompanying texts illustrate important concepts and salient features of common diseases. The language is clear and facts are presented concisely. I particularly loved the part on general pathology : it contains one of the most beautifully written summaries of the recurring themes in pathology...i.e. cell injury, necrosis, adative response, neoplasia, inflammation, thrombosis etc. Read, re-read and re-read the first few chapters of this book, so that those concepts get stuck in your brain. Once that's mastered, you'll have little difficulty facing systems pathology.
Unfortuantely, no book is perfect... this one has no gross/macro pictures, and the texts while perfectly summarised, are not enough to get you thru the boards or other path exams. If you're looking for uncommon or esoteric stuff, search elsewhere.
Nevertheless, I would call this the perfect primer of pathology, and an essential companion to the bigger textbooks.
Buy it if you really want to UNDERSTAND and APPRECIATE pathology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy, outstanding textbook
This book is simply excellent. It has great pictures and it helped my with my histology class in med school. It is easy to read and it makes histology a lot more interesting and fun to learn. It also cut some of my study time since it is not filled with unnecessay information---it gets right to the point. My study group and I also used the following that is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686
The second book was quite revealing with the kind of questions we saw on our histology exams. We all got B's and A's after using both these books. In addition, both these books helped me on the USLME 1. I would definietly get these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars This has the potential to be a fine book....
...just as soon as it comes out in the 3rd edition, assuming that the authors get a substantial amount of in-depth reviewing help in getting the bugs ironed out of it before then.

I've been using this book for a Microanatomy course in medical school. I liked this book initially, but there have been more than a couple of occasions where I've had to go to other sources for explanations of material that should have been clearer in the text. Also, based on errors and contradictions with other sources I've found so far, I've since come to believe that one can believe maybe 96-98% of the information printed in it. Perhaps the authors just 'winged it' now and then or maybe one or the other had senior moments (Hiatt is retired) and 'remembered' a few too many details to be true which unfortunately aren't. Regardless, if you're not already conversant with the subject and aren't comparing what you read here to what you glean elsewhere, good luck in figuring out what's accurate and what isn't.

It's still too early for me to have a really strong opinion of the competition, but based on G&H's relatively poor treatment of odontogenesis (tooth development), I was inspired to pick up the excellent-looking new (4th) edition of Ross, Kaye, and Pawlina's "Histology - A Text And Atlas". Their diagrams and coverage (for this subject area at least) are also not only more readable, but also more comprehensive. (This is particularly ironic, given that Gartner and Hiatt both hail from a school of dentistry.) Also, unlike G&H's text, Ross et al's latest effort *is* usable as a histology atlas (in my non-expert opinion at least), which helps greatly when one needs to know not only how things work but also what they look like. Given that the Ross book is also well written, G&H's effort is left with precious little to recommend it. Admittedly this is but one subject area among many so it's too early to say for sure, but for now at least Ross et al seem to have produced the clear winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Text for Beginners
Coming from a social science background rather than one in biology, I found this book a lifesaver first year. The photos are great and the diagrams extremely helpful. I replaced the required Junquira, which I found unreadable, with Gartner and Hiatt!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Textbook of Histology
This book is really one of the best textbooks of Histology I have ever seen and if you exclude (NMS Histology, concise and not well illustrated ) ,you won't find (as a medical student) such a comprehensive, organised, well illustrated textbook of Histology. However, you will need to buy a good atlas of Histology along with the book simply because the book is not an atlas. One of the features that I liked very much in the book is the simple coloured hand-drawn pictures which simplify the real microscopic slides very much and make easier to understand and draw. Another feature is that the book along with the histology text has also physiology, gross anatomy notes as well as clinical correlations in an integrated way so that you do not need to refer to other textbooks in Anatomy and physiology to correlate it with histology text. During my histology course , I did not need to refer any other book in histology (except to NMS Histology to some bits which I did not find detailed info about it in the book). It is really good book and I recommend to you as a textbook and reference (Especially if your course involves detailed knowledge about the material).

2-0 out of 5 stars A horrible beginner's text.
The micrographs and illustrations are lush and colorful but do not correlate with the text at all. It's as if Gartner and Hiatt have adapted the better illustrations from previously used textbooks. The information is dense but only useful if you've already been introduced to the subject. If you are new to histology, you will be hopelessly confused. Furthermore, the figures will be useless because they are not labelled and not explained in the text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice pace, easy to follow
I found this book very helpful for my veterinary histology course. It has wonderful illustrations and pictures; all of the references to the photographs are on the same page so there is no flipping between pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars not all it's made out to be
I've somewhat changed my view of this book over the last few months. Although what I said below is correct, my overall judgement was too harsh, so I've increased my rating from 3 to 4 stars. It's not that this is a great book, it's just that medical courses these days have slimmed down the Histology component so much that books like these are more than adequate. In fact, you can do extremely well in theory exams by just studying prac books like this.

Now of all *prac* books, this is certainly the best! And having completed my first year Histology course, I am certain Wheater's would have had more than enough detail - and would have saved me a lot of time. Get this book if you're a medical student, but if you're a histology major or need something more advanced, you will be disappointed by this book.

----- ----- ----- ----- -----

Many of the reviews here are full of praise for Wheaters, and they aren't all wrong in my opinion. Wheaters is one of the best "prac"/lab books for histology. However, the people who give it 5 out-of 5 are either biased or filled with elation from passing their courses that they neglect the weaknesses of this book.

Like any book, this has weaknesses. Glaring ones at that: the diagrams are sometimes too dark (contrast too high) or too pale (contrast to low), most of the pictures are much too small to discern and analyse the detail, the text is certainly what you need to know for 1st year med ... lab, it is not going to get you through the theory exam with flying colours.

As I said, though, this book is one of the best "prac"/lab books, because it doubles as a decent text and a decent atlas. But, it is neither the best text or the best atlas. Di Fiore's long running atlas has excellent drawings with many photomicrographs and deserves a browse. I haven't seen Gartner and Hiatt's Atlas, but I hear it is competitive. Then there is Kerr's Atlas, which lacks quantity but has some good quality.

As for texts, Ross, Romrell and Kaye is a popular choice (it has a good, but not overwhelming level of detail for Medicine). Junquiera's Basic Histology is also popular. For a simpler book, or simpler course, Cormack's Essential Histology is an excellent choice.

So, if you're looking for a book to bring to practical classes/labs: you can't really go wrong with Wheater's. But, don't rely on this book to carry you through the theory exams. You'll often be frustrated that some of the things you need can't be found in this atlas, or that the pictures are too darn small. Overall, a fair buy ... but, the best advice is to, shop around a bit before deciding.

2-0 out of 5 stars !!!!
This book is good but not for beginers or medical students. it's complicated and packed with information, that might not be so important for students.
doesn't have any clinical correlations. i'd suggest the Basic histology book:text and atlas, rather than this one

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for my histology class
I am a medical student and found this textbook very helpful because it was well-organized and full of important information. It's very thorough and complete with great pictures. Also, this book will always serve as a great reference in years to come. My study group and I also used the following which is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (isbn: 0971999686) The questions in the second book were of similar type to the tests in our medical histology class. In fact, we were recommended the second book from our friends at another med school and they found it quite helpful. It goes to show they were right, we all got A's and B's by using these two books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good textbook for my medical histology class
I found this book very helpful for understanding the concepts of histology. It's well-written and quite thorough and gave me a good foundation in understanding histology. ... ... Read more
