Comprehensive and easy-to-use, Herbal Healing for Women explains how to create remedies -- including teas, tinctures, salves and ointments--for the common disorders that arise in the different cycles of a woman's life. A complete women's health-care manual, this book discusses:

  • common disorders and the herbs that are effective for treating them
  • how to select and store herbs
  • preparation of hundreds of herbal remedies
  • an alphabetical listing of herbs, including a brief description of the herb, the general medicinal usage, and when necessary, warnings about potential side effects.
It is this emphasis upon safe herbology that impressed me most about this book; for example, Gladstar very carefully distinguishes between the safe external applications of Pennyroyal herb and potentially lethal internal misuse of Pennyroyal oil. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasure!
This book is a pleasure to read and a gem for every woman concerned for her health. As an acupressure practitioner I find Rosemary Gladstar's advice invaluable, and her recipes and herbal suggestions complement nicely my books on Chinese herbs. The teas, tinctures and salves are easy to make, and the explanations are clear and knowledgeable. The Materia Medica at the end of the book is extremely useful. I particularly enjoyed Ms. Goldstar's suggestions for younger women's skin problems, have made - without any problems and with common kitchen appliances - the range of facial prducts described in the book, and am enjoying them immensely. Not only are they better than any commercial brand of skin care (because they only contain the best and purest products) but one has the satisfaction of taking an active role in caring for her own health and beauty. Even if you already own several herbal books, do not miss this one. It will become your favorite!

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to women of every age
I wish I'd known about this book 10 years ago, when my interest in herbal healing and nutrition took off. I am SO glad I bought it. Ms. Gladstar's personality, compassion and expertise are almost palpable in this book. You almost feel that she is right there beside you, gently guiding you as you move on your healing journey. I found, within the pages of this book, more understanding of my womanhood and its challenges and transitions and pains/discomforts those entailed, than I ever found in any gynecologist's office. It's clear from her books that Ms. Gladstar is not only a healer, but a gifted teacher as well. She is able to transmit the philosophy that using herbs is a way of life and not simply emergency medicine. I noticed that many of the herbs and recipes in the book (and every last one of her recipes is a therapeutic masterpiece!) use herbs that are fairly easy to find. No exotic weeds here! Her years of experience are evident in how well her herbal blends work. I'm thankful that a herbalist of her caliber is generous enough to share so much knowledge that has been refined and proven over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all women who use herbal remedies
Rosemary Gladstar is a highly respected herbalist. Here she has provided a very useful book that will be enjoyed by any woman interested in herbal remedies. Unlike similar books, this one is appropriate for the novice and the experienced herbalist. Well written and beautiful, this will be a welcome addition to your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensable, and a great bargain!
this is the best [price] you can spend on your health! I own a herb store and have been working with herbs for years but periodically pull this book out and learn something new every time. I've told dozens of people to buy this book, for themselves and others. The recipes are simple and really effective. As both a beginners guide and for an experienced herbalist it just can't be beat. buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book LITERALLY Changed My Life!
I've had Interstitial Cystitis (I.C.) for nearly 8 years now. I was scheduled for my second hydrodistention (bladder stretching....just as uncomfortable as it sounds!), and I received a call from my mom, who had read an article about this book. I cancelled my surgery, read the book in 2 days, and have been practicing many of the ideas that Catherine listed in her book ever since. I thought I had researched I.C. about as much as I could. I've been to several doctors, read a couple of books, and have been involved in support groups. Although I thought I was very knowledgeable about I.C., I had never heard of most of the suggestions listed in Catherine's book to heal and soothe the bladder. She lists many alternative treatments, including herbs (how they can help you, and also who may be at risk of taking them), cleansing remedies, essential oils, and more. She also talks about what things may be causing your I.C., additional illnesses you may have, and how to release toxins out of your body in the best way possible for a painful bladder. Since reading her book in April 2004, I've started many of the ideas mentioned, and have already begun to feel better. I recently was at a doctor's appointment for a physical, and for the first time since diagnosed with I.C., there was no trace of blood in my urine, which proved to me that my bladder is actually beginning to heal after 8 long years of horrible pain. Healing isn't going to happen overnight, but if you read Catherine's book and put into practice at least some of the things mentioned in her book, I believe you will begin to feel better, and the healing can begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE........
This book is a must have for anyone suffering from IC. It can stand alone or as a companion to Catherine's other 2 books. It has alot of great information for IC pateints (and anyone really) looking for the road back to health. I really think anyone suffering from IC and wanting to try alternative or natural approaches to healing needs to read this book. It gives good and clear explanations why natural approaches may not have worked in the past or my have caused you to feel worse and how to 'feel'your way thru the healing process and choose the best treatments appropriate for 'you' and 'your' IC. I'll keep this book close at hand for th rest of my life..not only to help with my IC but as a reference for any future health problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent IC Recovery Guide
This book, as well as Catherine Simone's first book, is a must-have for anyone who is serious about taking charge of their own health and recovering from IC. A year ago, I read Cath's first book and began trying the suggestions she made. A year later, I am MUCH improved. I read her second book recently and found more useful information that I have already begun to put into practice. The suggestions she makes are self-help based and easy to do at home. She offers a very compelling theory for what causes IC and a practical approach to overcome it, always with the patient's comfort and safety in mind. She also encourages individual choice and research, rather than dictating some rigid program to follow. Her compassion and understanding of fellow IC sufferers really comes through. Finding Catherine's first book changed my life last year and her new book is prompting further changes. There's lots of hope and inspiration here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Along The Healing Path,Recovering from Interstitial Cystitis
Catherine Simone has hit the mark again with her new book.Besides going into more detail about natural healing modalities she encourages IC patients to "find their own healing path" regardless if they have a medical doctor or alternative practioner. This is the message that I came away with personally, that we all have the power to heal ourselves and to trust your gut feelings. Although western medicine has offered IC patients some treatments and medicinces for this dreaded disease, they don't work for all IC patients and some are very invasive. Alternative medicine may not have all the answers either but Catherine Simone,a former IC sufferer herself,is living proof that alternative methods work and many others are finding this out as well.A must read for anyone with IC and wants to get well."The road less traveled" might be a longer road and not a familliar one,but it will get you to where you want to be....a better life in terms of health for the IC patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars I consider this one my "IC BIBLE"
This book is definitely a "must have" for anyone suffering from Interstitial Cystitis, especially those not having much luck with conventional medicine. The author makes you feel as though she is right there with you, guiding you through each and every herb she found that helped her. She goes into great detail about each herb, what it is used for, and any known side effects or warnings. There is a wealth of information in this book written by a recovered IC patient who has put years and years of research into this disease. Her focus is what can and will make the IC body healthier. Thank you Catherine for another great book for those with IC. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Skeptics . . . put this to the test
This is one simple, yet powerful technique. All you have to do is put it to the test. Somehow the process cuts quickly to the core negative thoughts and can eliminate self sabotaging behavior that is the result of imprisoning beliefs. We all have internalized some misbeliefs along the way, this quickly frees one from those bonds. This is one book that should be in every library.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works, it really works!!!
I wish this book would have come out years ago. Gloria Arenson's approach to healing is fantastic. It is fast, easy and you don't have to wait for days or weeks to feel better. It's truly amazing that you can feel better now. The content is thoughtfully laid out and easy to read. Arenson's approach makes me think that this really could be the last self-help book I ever need!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I found this book to be extremely helpful both personally and professionally. It is written clearly so that busy people, such as myself, can use the technique easily. It is down to earth and basic and at the same time explains in a readable fashion, how and why this method works. I am a psychotherapist and teacher and have taught the technique to students and clients, both adult and children. But most of all, I use it on myself often. It has helped me to cut down on my obsession with chocolate. It has helped reduce pain in my back. It has helped me feel much better over a loss I recently suffered. I could go on and on. It almost seems to easy and simple to be true--but it really does work!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gargantuan 5 Stars!
Okay, so this shouldn't work. It makes no sense. Meridians? Tapping? Where's the logic? At least, that's what I used to think. I've suffered from agoraphobia and found public speaking impossibly painful. But part of my work requires me to occasionally get up in front of huge groups and either give a talk or sit on a panel. I'd reached the point where I couldn't talk or breathe. I was turning down events, which hurt my business and worried me that I was going to end up so agoraphobic that eventually I wouldn't be able to leave the house. Desperation drove me to try Dr. Arenson's method. I used it in advance for a month, practicing just as she says in the book, imagining my getting up in front of the big audience I was scheduled (terrifyingly) to speak at recently. By the time I got there, I was worried but okay. By the time it was my turn to give the talk, I was still okay (when you're agoraphobic, "okay" is wonderful). When I actually opened my mouth, words came out. I could breathe. Even more amazingly, I actually discovered that I was enjoying myself. What a marvelous feeling. And that's the point. So, I give this book a gargantuan 5 stars. If you want help, it's right here.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really is simple
This technique really works! Don't let the cover fool you this is a great book for both women and men. The book is so easy to understand. The text flows in a logical progression. There are great examples of situations in which people were able to resolve their issue or problem with this technique. I enjoyed reading this book and the technique I learned so much, that I bought several more copies to give to friends. This is one of those "self help" books that actually works! Go ahead make your life better, check out this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars User-Friendly and Empowering Book of Healing
I discovered this book as it was part of my curriculum in Holistic Massage Therapy School. But it is applicable to anyone who is looking to learn about holistic health self-care. Based on the Chinese 5-Element theory, Staying Healthy With The Seasons explores the particular energies, meridians, organs, moods, strongpoints and pitfalls of each season. It is easy to read, and pick and choose which ideas you like and would like to incorporate into new habits to try. There are so many ideas for each season, ranging from dietary cleansing, to mental patterns, to holistic bodywork recommended for the season, that you are bound to find some ideas that really appeal to you where you are now, and others you may like to try later.

This book really helped me to grow in ways I hadn't expected, and to release some difficulties and toxins I'd been holding onto on an emotional as well as physical level for several years. I felt very empowered using it to cleanse and refresh myself, inside and out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tried and true
This book is fabulous! I've done the elimination cleanse twice to astounding results. I'm about to do it again. It takes effort and about a month, but it's worth it for the absolute well-being you feel as a result. I've recommended this book to many people and all of them sing its praises! You will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Chinese Elements for Body Health All Year
I have owned and read this book for well over fifteen years. It is the first book I consult when self diagnosing any ill health for myself, family and friends. It had accidently fallen behind my other health books on my book shelf and I truly panicked. My very first thought was where can I get another copy. Having searched the entire shelf and joyfully locating it once more, I was determined to order another for back-up. It is the only book I have ever read that succinctly and clearly explains the five elements in the body, how they each are prominent in their own season and how best to cure any ailment during each season. Wisdom of the ages for our modern era.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellant guide to living within nature's boundaries.
I have used this book for the last ten years, and gone through two different copies. Every season I refer to the guidelines and always find that I do much better healthwise if I follow the path indicated. I also taught martial arts for a time and the children that I worked with all understood the concepts therein, when presented properly. They are that basic. I cannot say enough for this book. It has become a part of my life and a way of life for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Chinese medicine.
In this well-written book, Elson Haas gives an excellent overview of Chinese medicine and how the human body and spirit change with the seasons. He explains how to facilitate and enhance these natural processes through subtle changes in diet, exercise, and rest habits, with additional tips for periodic internal cleansing and spiritual nurturing. Charts and diagrams make it easy to understand, and his clear, positive writing style helps inspire the reader to follow his recommendations. This book will help you be more in tune with the world around you as well as your body's own natural rhythms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, clear and easy to use!!!!
If you are going to buy only one book on health, it has to be this one. This book is very complete and easy to use. This book explains conventional and natural treatments and has a wide list of common problems or illnesses. First they describe the problem thoroughly and then describe the treatments for it, it allows you to compare the conventional and natural treatments and decide what's best for you. I am very interested in health issues and disease prevention and I read a lot about it, I have bought various books on the subject and this one is by far my favorite!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher and Mother
I am a teacher as well as a mother. I like the simplicity and organization of the book. Under each topic a good explaination and variety of treatments are listed. You can pick the book up and quickly and easily find your information. I would definitely give this book as a gift to new parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on Natural Medicine, this is it!
We have both this book and the Healthier Child book. They are now dog eared from being used so much. Very well written in a format that is easy to use. I recommend this to everyone. It has saved us a lot of money on doctor visits!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around resource
I'm a fan of books about health, and have quite a large collection. This has quickly become one of my favorites, due to its well-balanced combination of traditional (allopathic) and alternative medical advice. It's unique in this way-most other health books are either all alternative, or all traditional (despite the fact that the majority of Americans are combining the two approaches). I consider this book an information integrator that helps me see all our choices for health and wellness, to weigh the merits of very different approaches and make informed decisions. It will be under the Christmas tree for many of my friends and loved ones this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A "Must-Own"
This book is superior to all other nutrition books I have read. It addresses the most modern health issues, the newest scientific studies, and the "hottest" nutrition crazes in a clear and concise manner. Other books tend to ignore these topics or are simply too outdated to rely on. If you're interested in health (which everyone should be) then this book will be your bible. ... Read more

Book Description

Not science fiction, but a scientific fact! This book is the first common sense scientific explanation of the aging process and "how to" reverse it.The nutrients that we deliver to our cells burn with oxygen and become acidic wastes after giving energy to our body. The body tries its best to get rid of these acidic wastes through urine and perspiration.Unfortunately, our lifestyle, diet and environment prevent our body to get rid of all the wastes that it generates.Gradually, these leftover acidic wastes accumulate somewhere within our body.Since acid coagulates blood, the blood circulation near the waste areas becomes poor, causing all kinds of degenerative diseases to develop. The author defines the aging process as the accumulation of non-disposed acidic wastes within the body.According to this theory, the reduction of accumulated wastes is re verse aging. This book explains how some of the adult degenerative diseases are caused by too much acidic wastes, and describes the various scientific devices and methods to reduce these wastes without any harmful side effects. These devices and methods are being wid ely used in Japan.Alkaline water makers (water ionizers) have been in existence in Japan for more than 40 years. Many in the alternative health industry of water ionizers, magnet and far-infrared devices regard this book as the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference book of its kind in the English language. It is a "must read" for all who are health-conscious. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Acid/Alkaline Hype will die down soon enough
Sorry to disappoint all of you who are pumped about about the acid/alkaline theory. The author of this book makes it seem as if we will all become champions by drinking water with a high pH. This just isn't true, for several reasons.

The authors research is based on nothing. It's based on his opinion, which is foolish. He throws in a whole bunch of scientific jargon, as if its going to win us all over. The fact is, drinking water with a high pH can be detrimental to your health, not positive. Putting those drops in your water "clusters" the water, making the molecules smaller, thereby hydrating the body more than regular water. This is bad because it tricks the body into overhydrating, and can wreak havoc in your stomach. Dr. David Wheeler points this out on his site thoroughly.

Again, don't want to disappoint the fans of this theory, but there's a lot more to it than drinking alkaline water to become healthy. Half the people who drink this water will become too alkaline, and could do some serious damage, like not producing stomach acid anymore. It's happened to thousands.

I urge you all to do natural things. Not use medication, like Alkaline water. It IS indeed medicine. The body WILL try to reject it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reverse Aging
Dr Sang Whang Gets It!...Daily Wellness- and So Simple! This is not rocket science, but a straight forward explanation of how our bodies change from alkaline to acid over the years by what we consume and breathe daily and why we suffer from the diseases and illnesses that we do, chronic or just annoying. It is Reverse Aging simple put, but also a way to daily wellness. It is so simple, but we seem to like "complicated". The ease of adding a few alkaline drops to your daily liquids that you prepare, drink, eat makes such a big difference in the balance of our body's PH. 4-0 out of 5 stars A very valuable book
Forward-thinking health theorists stress the need for our bodies to be less acidic. Civilization and laziness have led most of us to detrimental eating habits, one result being acidic bodies. If you want to test your acidity all you need is ph testing paper from the health food store. Test your urine. Then try to get more alkaline. It isn't easy.

Dr Whang safely assumes that most of us will not easily change our behavior. His recommendation is to use ionized water which is indeed very effective at impacting acid conditions. He has several other interesting theories as well.

I have been using ionized water for two months and see many internal improvements that reach beyond an increasingly better acid balance. Some of the true believers in ionized water consider the alkalinity to be only one potential benefit of the water. Do some web searching for further information.

If you read all of the reviews of this book you will find some that are cautionary. The reasoning and backup for these opinions is somewhat thin, but this is true of information in general on ionized water. I have read much of what I can on this matter and suggest that you do the same. For myself I believe the material in the book to be very valuable. For the immediate future I will use ionized water as a health supplement. Based on what I have seen and read I hope that it will be an ongoing aid in the effort to find balanced health...

A recommendation for an inexpensive batch ionizer to get started (no affiliation whatsoever)...hiddencures.com

1-0 out of 5 stars Recipe for stomach pain!
I read this book and was thoroughly convinced that the author was onto something big. I purchased his special product that alters the PH of water to help alkalize your system. I began to experience strange stomach pains. It took me many months to ferret out that it was his product that was causing it! I tried another bottle: same problem. It didn't matter when I took it or whether I took it with or without food and/or other supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Who would have thought it so simple...
I think this is an important and essential addition to all self-help libraries. Mr. Whang explains very simply the workings of the body. I have been interested in nutrition for some time and have learned over the years to eat "basic," that is, emphasizing foods that balance the body's pH... lemons, for instance, I learned, although acid in taste actually have a basic effect on the body. Most foods used in their natural form do also.

But good heavens with the introduction of modern, refined and processed foods as well as the various prevalent pollutants that we spill into our environment, the aging process has sped up while degenerative diseases have increased. Now I wouldn't recommend this water as a plethora. Rather it is good to use while making some other corrections to one's diet as well, beginnning with cutting back on the carbonated drinks and other various highly sugar-laced and/or overly processed food stuffs!

I think he has a very original idea with the ionizer and the drops! In France there is the Dr. Kousmine who has also thought and taught along those lines, advising patients to take alkalizing salts when urine pH is too acidic.

I especially appreciated his middle-of-the-road-no-excess philosophy, so important in matters of health, MODERATION being the key word. Let's face it, we wouldn't even be needing this water if we hadn't already broken a few of the rules along the way... But even too much of a good thing can be bad. With that in mind, don't over do it with the basic water... BALANCE being the main goal!

Thanks Mr. Whang for this great and very simple-to-use idea! ... Read more

Book Description

Reading THE NATURAL PREGNANCY BOOK is like having your own personal herbalist and midwife at your side. Expertly written by Aviva Jill Romm, who has been providing family-centered natural health care for almost 20 years, it was one of the first books to explore botanical medicine and pregnancy. In this revised and updated edition, Ms. Romm thoughtfully follows the woman’s journey from conception to birth, focusing on natural health. She describes herbs that can promote and maintain a healthy pregnancy (along with those you should avoid during your term) and the basics of a healthy diet, with an emphasis on natural foods. THE NATURAL PREGNANCY BOOK is a complete guide for the woman who envisions a safe pregnancy without technological intervention, as nature intended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for Herbs!
I enjoyed this book and it was a great help. From wondering what was going on, if it was normal to how to treat constipation and other pregnancy ills naturally. Also very informative to know which herbs are helpful and which to avoid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book for expectant mothers!
This book has served us well for our past two pregnancies. The suggestions work great! It really is like having a wise woman around to ask questions and advice of while with child. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful book
Has been very helpful and a wonderful resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the "Expecting" book
After having read the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book, and hating it, a friend gave this book to me during my fourth month of pregnancy (with my first baby). I really like this book, even though Ms. Romm is kind of corny and extreme in some of her ideas. (What if I don't want to "wear my stretch marks like silver jewelry"?)

The book has great suggestions for alternative ways to deal with the discomforts of pregnancy. It also teaches you to love yourself, and to value yourself for what your body is able to do.

It doesn't have a detailed month-by-month account of what to expect. Rather, it lets you say what you're experiencing now, rather than on someone else's timeline, and gives you suggestions for dealing with it positively. I credit this book with helping me to find non-medication ways of dealing with depression, so I can actually enjoy being pregnant during my last trimester.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're only going to buy one pregnancy book, buy this one
This book is *much* more helpful than many others on the market, in my not always so humble opinion. Very sound advice, suggestions, great tone/approach overall. Because when it comes right down to it, nutrition is THE biggest thing we have control of, while pregnant. Even if one does not want to invest in or "do" all the herbs she suggests throughout the text, the basic pregnancy and nutritional advice is very sound, and ultimately, helpful throughout a woman's life. Funny... another reviewer mentioned pagan content. I've owned, referred to and personally used this book for two years, and have never noticed anything "pagan" about it. Does merely recognizing the spiritual aspects of birth count as pagan? If so, I guess I must be a pagan, too. Modern obstetrics would have us ignore the spiritual/emotional aspects of birth, seemingly entirely, but... the food we eat nourishes not only our unborn children, but our own souls, as well. Check out this wonderful book/approach to pregnancy, birth and life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbs for Hepatitis C and the Liver
This is an essential book for Hep C. I have used the herbal protocol for 8 months and brought my viral load down to 69,000 and it is still dropping. Before I read this book, I had almost convinced myself that traditional treatment was the only way, even with its horrible side effects. Now, I am so glad that I found this book, contacted Dry Creek Herb Farm (referenced in the book) and started my daily herb treatments. The only side effect of the herb is that they don't taste very good, but with the results I have had they are starting to taste pretty good. The cost is very affordable also. Thank you Stephen Harrod Buhrner and Dry Creek Herb Farm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable knowledge for those with HCV

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, important book. Highly recommend it.
This book is turning out to be a valuable tool for me in practice and teaching. I recommend it for students, teachers and health practitioners who want to use essential oils to enhance patient care. It is well-written, objective, practical and has extensive references, summary tables, appendices and index. As a physician, I appreciate its integrative approach. It is a good synthesis of history, chemistry, safety issues, experience, basic science, some of the most current clinical research, clinical applications and more. I especially liked the section on infection. In my opinion, it is an important work, which could well influence future research and clinical use of essential oils in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
This is a great book for any health professional wishing to enhance patient care with aromatherapy. As a nurse, I find it to be an outstanding resource full of scientifically based information related to essential oils and their uses. Dr Buckle has included an easy to use index to guide the reader to information on a variety of diseases and conditions which respond to aromatherapy intervention. This is a "must read" for anyone incorporating aromatherapy into a clinical or community setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice
Sick of all those superficial and almost identical books about aromatherapy?
If you are tired of aromatherapy recipe books and want some solid, research-backed (yes over 1,500 references!) information about how to REALLY help people with chronical pain, depression, Alzheimer's disease, pressure sores, insomnia, nasty infections, nausea or just to understand how essential oils work, don't hesitate to get this precious packed advice from former nurse and now PhD Jane Buckle. I have more than fifteen years of experience with essential oils but I found much useful news and lots of inspiration in this unique treasure box. The chemistry section is outstanding as is the section on side-effects or interactions with common drugs (in case you work with essential oils as recommended in some of the above mentioned books...)

3-0 out of 5 stars not as useful as others
I found this book to deal less with the practice of Clinical Aromatherapy than the politics of the use of essential oils clinically. I'm already convinced that the use of essential oils can be helpful in the healing of ourselves and others. I found the books by Kurt Schnaubelt to be more useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book
There are those who will see this book as a 2nd editon to Jane's first book, 'Clinical Aromatherapy in Nursing' but to suggest such a link would be similar to saying that Concorde was just a step up from the Wright Brothers.

This book meets the needs of health professionals and educators, as well as being a vital tool for those who work with essential oils. It is an important contribution to the creation of healthcare packages that embrace the very best of orthodox and complementary medicine. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars simple, comprehensive book (on a SICK SUBJECT)
strong points: i'm a therapist who has many patients taking psychiatric meds, and while i don't prescribe them myself (nor have any desire to), i do need to know at least a thumbnail sketch about most of them. this book does the trick for me. it avoids the irrelevant and obscure detail of the Physician's Desk Reference and hits on the necessary basics (dosages, side effects, dangers, potential "benefits", brand versus generic names - and it has a good index!).

that said: this book, like all others of its ilk, almost completely avoids touching on the notion that medication in most cases can be terribly anti-therapeutic, and is prescribed by doctors for much the same reason drug addicts prescribe themselves the assortment of illicit drugs - symptom relief. these drugs cure no one, just keep people happily numb and in check, and are basically prescribed to help people improve their level of functioning IN THE SHORT TERM. if it were up to me, i'd restructure the whole system and do away with most of these meds entirely.

there's a funny thing i've noticed: when a patient comes to me and wants both therapy and medication (say, Zoloft), i can almost certainly surmise that he or she has less motivation for doing deep inner work (which produces the long-term gain) than someone who wants therapy alone and is resistant to taking medication. doing therapy (learning to know oneself at one's deepest level of being) is a painful process. medication takes away pain. you do the math.

and as for that idea that being on psych meds gives someone a "platform from which to do deep inner work"? as for evidence, i haven't seen it. but i do think it's a great rationalization!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information
For the person who is contemplating phsychiatric treatment, "medication" can have an intimidating impression especially if it is a foreign subject. The book will help you make you this important decision by giving you updated information on the newest prescription drugs. For those who are uncomfortable, alternatives and non-drug options are discussed as well. A wide range of psychiatric syndromes are covered: Anxiety disorders, ADD, Bipolar, Depression, Developmental disorders, Drug dependence, Eating disorders, Insomnia, Pshychosis, and even Alzheimer's Disease. A wide range is covered.. ... Read more

Book Description

"My belief is that we can all find the rhythms and harmonics of our celestial music, and that our efforts will enable us to live extraordinary lives filled with peace, passion, health, and a sense of unity with the universe."

We are all familiar with the tremendous power of sound to energize our bodies and soothe our spirits, whether we experience it in the form of rousing music or in the hushed noise of waves on a beach at night. A pioneer in the revolutionary new field of sound medicine, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a leading oncologist and director of integrative medicine at the Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center, has been using sound as complementary therapy in the form of chanting, music, and quartz crystal bowls to treat patients since 1991 with remarkable results. In Sounds of Healing, he shares his philosophy and sound-based techniques for self-healing, which can be used by anyone, whether faced with a life-threatening disease or simply seeking relief from the stresses of daily life.

Sound, voice, and music are potent tools for restoring the inner balance of the body and awakening the spirit. Dr. Gaynor explores the science behind how and why sound and vibration affect us on a physiological level and outlines the sound traditions and practices that promote relaxation and body-mind healing. Rooted in the musical principles of entrainment, resonance, toning, and harmonics, his methods help us achieve overall wellness, greater energy, and the realization of our highest spiritual potential.

His easy-to-follow exercises include:

  • Life Songs--Discover your personal, mantra-like song that resonates with your own particular essence and use it as a means to healing and self-discovery
  • Essence Sound Meditation--Use your voice or another instrument to help you rise above everyday worries, relieve stress, and begin the healing process
  • Energetic Re-creation--Give voice to your emotional conflicts and create new blends of sound to help you resolve them

Dr. Gaynor also describes his unique vision for a holistic approach to medicine that treats the whole person and creates the conditions for a higher quality of life. An extraordinary blend of science, music, and spirituality, Sounds of Healing is an enlightening, inspiring guide to fostering inner harmony and tuning in to the music of our own souls. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Gaynor Evidences His Own Growth and Acceptance
Healing Essence was highly touted and I purachased it; however, I had a feeling that it was missing something - or I was. Now with this book, Dr. Gaynor, like Chopra, seems to be finding the niche of his essence, and he give the reader the right to find their's. That is HEALING! As a nurse, it was amazing what a sachet of dried lavender attached to a pillow,& backrub would do, or a little music box I carried in my pocket to help neuro patients calm down. That was the 60s. This book shows the expanse of sound, and that one's body responds to that which it particularly needs. Having had chemo, the horrors of the traditional rows of chairs and people 'yapping,' vs what privacy and sound may have done for me brings tears. Just recently, with a new water 'garden,' I placed it in the living room - discomfort overcame me. It took a week to realize I wanted it in my office near to me. I do not work such long spells any longer. I integrate sounds, and relax! There are so many more options I've yet to try thanks to Dr. Gaynor. And, so many practices I'm going to try to change here in Austin, Texas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Gaynor brings medicine out of the dark ages
Dr. Gaynor integrates sound and emotion as powerful tools in his medical arsenal leading his patients back to health. His use of the healing power of sound compliments the use of conventional medicine. Dr. Gaynor's guided meditations have helped achieve living miralces in "terminal" patients. This book reaffirms anything is possible when we discover what made us ill and how we can rebuild our lives during and after illness. This book is a priceless road map to self discovery and joy. I wish I could give it six stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars a celestial journey
Sounds of Healing is an extraordinary publication. Like a journey within a journey, it is an odyssey along the path of spiritual wisdom, healing and self fulfillment. Like a compass, it directs as it informs-it encourages the reader to meander throughout its pages, enjoying the self direction and spontaneous discovery that are the essence of the spiritual quest. The book together with the Sounds of Healing compact disk moved me towards celestial realms that I have never before experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and beautiful book.
This is a brilliant and beautiful book superbly written with elegance and gracefulness. It is the most powerful and illuminating source of the role that sound can play in the healing process that I have ever read. Dr. Gaynor has an outstanding grasp of various sounds, techniques, and terms-the "grammatical" elements that make you fluent in the "language" of sound. But he goes far beyond that. He understands and transmits an unbelievable amount of expressive, historical, and even philosophical information. In keeping with that insight, he illuminates the varying circumstances and contexts that have shaped sound down thru the ages. He guides us thru the sounds that are capable of speaking to and from the human soul, and tells us something central about the human condition in each of us. This is a dazzling book which tells us not only about our distant past but also about how that past is able to shape our present and our future. ... Read more
