Now that the popularity of alternative medicine has made justabout everyone aware of the health connection between mind and body, itseems like a fine time to bring back this book, originally written bythe late psychiatrist Caprio and newly revised by Caroline Miller, deanof academic studies at the American Institute of Hypnotherapy. To theauthors, self-hypnosis is an ideal way to reach a state of relaxationand concentration that will allow you to send healing messages to yourbody and really get it to listen. The easy-to-follow text includesseveral methods of hypnotic induction, and instructs readers on usingthe process to lose weight, sleep better, overcome depression, improvetheir sex lives, slow the aging process, and conquer other healthdifficulties that are now widely acknowledged to depend quite a bit onsubconscious mental states. The authors acknowledge that hypnosis isoften misunderstood, and they devote quite a bit of effort toovercoming misconceptions and getting readers to take it seriously as ahealing force. --Ben Kallen, Personal Growth editor ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read yet very effective
This book was an easier read than many hypnosis books on the market. There are also many relaxation scripts to help get beginners started. I have been exposed to many types of hypnosis practices and I must say that I like self-hypnosis the best, but I do feel that some exposure to a professional can be very beneficial. I have been using this book as an aid for about 4 months and I must say the changes are indescribable. I have lost weight (a lot!), become more disciplined in my studies and have a more rewarding relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years. Also, since the suggestions are my own that I am giving, then I am not as prone to accept suggestions from others and as result, I am more aware of negative energy amongst other people and don't take it on. This is a great book and in conjuction with other tools such as relaxation, some exposure to personal therapy, it can/will have amazing effects and the that is the truth!

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing yourself with self-hypnosis
If you care about yourself and well being, this book is for you! The book is easy to read and enjoyable. You can apply self-hypnosis to almost anything in your daily life. There's no magic in hypnosis, it's all about the positive attitude and response. The book in general has very good tips on how to relax and have a better way to live. ... Read more

Book Description

Reissued by Brunner/Mazel Publishers, this universally acclaimed volume ? based on both experimental studies and clinical practice ? provides a remarkably well?rounded examination of the application of hypnosis to pain relief. Written by a psychologist and a psychiatrist noted for their expertise as both practitioners and researchers, the book illustrates how hypnosis can significantly alleviate the pain of childbirth, medical or dental surgery, burns or other accidental injuries, cancer, and chronic syndromes. With over 600 references covering the field of modern research into the mechanisms of pain, the authors convey a thorough understanding of findings and limitations of available empirical studies. Yet the book remains exceptionally clear and non?technical and will appeal not only to professionals involved with pain reduction but to lay people as well. The Hilgards address a broad spectrum of topics relating to hypnosis and pain, ranging from an historical review to a consideration of future areas for investigation. They thoughtfully tackle the controversy still surrounding the nature of hypnosis ? is it an altered state of consciousness or a pattern of behaviour adopted by both subject and hypnotist? The concluding section presents the Hilgards' neo?dissociation theory of hypnosis as well as a highly useful technique for assessing susceptibility in clinical situations. Pain has been called the greatest unsolved problem in medicine. Hypnosis in the Relief of Pain, with its honest and complete appraisal of the role of hypnosis on pain reduction, will contribute significantly to the understanding and broader use of this noninvasive and natural healing phenomenon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars by the Editor of Become the Dream
Become The Dream is a powerful and practical teaching tool for professionals in any of the health and counseling fields, and an inspiring and provocative book for anyone seeking self-knowledge and actualization. Randal Churchill is Director of the Hypnotherapy Training Institute and originator of Hypnotic Dreamwork™. In this book he introduces a revolutionary combination of therapies that brings Gestalt dreamwork together with hypnosis. The vast majority of dreamwork methods rely on analysis and interpretation. By contrast, Gestalt dreamwork brings the dreamer into a deeper experience of the dream itself and allows the individual to find the unique relationship of the dream to his or her own existential experience. The addition of a wealth of hypnotic techniques takes the dreamer much further, with a variety of effective options such as hypnotic deepening, ideomotor methods, regression and positive suggestions for further insight and integration. Actual transcripts from a wide range of fascinating dreamwork sessions draw the reader into an intimate look at therapy from the inside. With great sensitivity and skill, the author demonstrates the remarkable potential of this unique work to tap into the receptivity and wisdom inherent in the subconscious mind and the potential for profound change.

Different than any other "dream" book I know. Highly recommended to anyone interested in knowing more about their dreams, discovering a consistent technique to do it, and then using that information to make positive changes in one's life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful clinical guide
This is a readable book on using hypnosis as an adjunct to cognitive, behavioral, or interpersonal therapy of depression. The author's views are sensible, balanced, and clinically relevant. He references the clinical and research literature to butress his arguments. The book is a bit skimpy for the price. The author refers the reader to his other books, CDs, and tapes for futher information, making this a bit like an infomercial. In addition, the author sometimes sets up a straw man to make his points. For example, he writes about therapists who tell their clients to "get their anger out" by pounding a chair with a bat. This example sounds like a caricature of therapy and I can't believe anyone but the most incompetent novice therapist would take such a stance -- but living on the East Coast, I may be ignorant of how therapy is practiced in California where the author resides. Nonetheless, the book contains valuable insights for clinicians who treat depression. It is also one of the few books that deals with the use of hypnosis in depression, which used to be a strict "no-no" according to traditional schools of hypnosis. In that sense this book is a breath of fresh air in the often dogmatic and opinionated world of hypnosis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Double Pleasure
Marilyn Gordon is a marvelous healer and her books reflect her beautiful healing Light! Extraordinary Healing is a double pleasure, two books in one really. First she takes you on an inspirational journey of healing and then she shows you how to overcome common problems on your own using the miracle technique, EFT. She shows you how a very simple "tapping" technique can free you from fears, anxieties, and move you into healing.

Thank you Marilyn for this very practical and wonderful book. I will continue to order them by the case lots so that I can offer them to our students at The Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services. You and your book are the best at teaching this technique.

Book Description

Research shows that many people react very differently to different kinds of hypnotic induction yet many hypnotherapists are confined to using only one technique. This book makes three radically different and important types of hypnosis easy to use in daily hypnosis work, as it examines in detail the techniques of Erickson, Estabrooks and Elman. Exploring methods that employ Direct Authoritarian and Indirect Permissive approaches, Hypnosis progresses beyond these methods to describe a new breed of induction pioneered by Dave Elman: a technique that places responsibility for hypnosis on the client. Offering a remarkable insight into the operation of the unconscious mind, this book discusses methods of hypnosis rarely taught to trainers, demystifying each hypnotic technique, and making each as accessible and useable as possible. Incorporating scripts for the various types of hypnotic induction, and including inductions for producing deep-trance phenomena, Hypnosis is simply an invaluable resource for all trainers and therapists wishing to incorporate these new ideas. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars General Information - Little Depth
The reviews I had read led me to expect great things. Perhaps that is why I was so disappointed. This book is "comprehensive" only in the sense that it briefly mentions many aspects of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. With regard to these mentions, however, I found it to be quite superficial. With only 176 pages prior to the Appendix, not much depth should be expected on any particular topic.

I found the sections on Erickson to be a good introduction to his work. There are only 9 printed pages devoted to Estabrooks, so you won't find much here. I also found the sections on Elman to be a gook introduction to him. It may inspire someone to further research on these people and their contributions. Unfortunately, I did not find much that I could use in the way of practical application. There is some of that in the book, however I think it would be most useful to someone who is completely new to the subject of hypnosis.

I was a bit bothered by the repetative commercials for Time Line Therapy. I was even more troubled by New Age religion being passed off as therapy. As a hypnotherapist, I think it is important to respect each individual's beliefs and to not impose a particular spiritual belief system onto a client. The chapter on Ericksonian Interventions has little to do with Erickson (who put faith in an individual's life experiences), and a lot to do with New Age beliefs. "Unconscious Mind" is always capitalized as if referring to deity. It is asked to make contact with "Higher Self" to get answers, and then to go ahead and "heal" the client. This was not Milton's way.

I would summarize this book as an introduction to hypnosis and a few New Age concepts. OK if that is all you want.

[I apologize for the anonymity. I have seen the attacks on reviewers who did not praise a work, and would rather avoid them.]

3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable Modern Book, but contains errors.
This is a fairly good representation of some modern techniques of hypnotherapy, many taken from NLP. It is certainly and by no means a "comprehensive guide" however. It is actually quite a short book. I have identified several factual errors in the book, mainly in the second chapter, the historical section. There are many questionable claims in this part of the book, they are not supported by a single historical reference or quotation. There are also straightforward errors in the account of linguistic terminology contained later in the book. Nevertheless, it is an interesting read and probably worth buying. It is not a great book on the subject, nor is it anywhere near being a comprehensive one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best

Until this book came out I'd have recommended anyone interested in hypnosis/hypnotherapy to start with 'Training Trances' by Overdurf and Silverthorn.
But not any more.

Whilst I still rate 'Training Trances' very highly, I'd say this book is significantly better. Firstly because 'Hypnosis' manages to cover so much material in a relatively small space - yet without seeming to miss anything of importance. Secondly, because it teaches by demonstrating three different approaches rather than just the one.

When I started out working with hypnosis it was very much in the Estabrooks "You are going to sleep ... you are going into a deep sleep" style.
Since discovering the Ericksonian style, some ten years ago, I've found the experience is much more 'harmonious' (for want of a better word) both for myself and for my clients. I believe I am also more effective before.
What this book did *for me* was both extend my knowledge and help me to understand why I personally prefer working in the Ericksonian style.

Having said that, the book has also given me a better appreciation of the benefits of other styles of hypnosis. So, whilst I thought I detected a slight, but undeniable bias towards the Ericksonian approach, I believe that the book is sufficiently even-handed to be of interest and value to readers coming from almost *any* other form of hypnotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force
A "TOUR DE FORCE" by Tad James. Few manuals on any subject can have been so lucidly written. Clear, concise, relevant and to the point. I would recommend this book to any student of hypnotherapy. Even more experienced hypnotherapists will learn something new and exciting from this book. A must for any hypnotherapist's bookshelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive book on hypnosis
The author presents an easy to read, interesting and usefull book on hypnosis. I was able to use the historical section for my lectures at various universities. The applications of hypnosis were simple to understand, yet advanced enough to meet the needs of professionals. I was very happy with the way Ms. Hadley explained the cognative approaches to smoking cessation, weight reduction and stress management. I am happy to recommend this book to my students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brett K. Steier (Master Clinical Hypnotherapist)

In this book it gives you information on exactly what to do with each situation it talks about. It gives you inductiona as well. Book Description

The field of hypnotism has greatly evolved in recent years. Since the publication of the successful award-winning first edition of this book, some 1,200 research and clinical articles on hypnotism have been published in American journals alone and a multitude of related books have been written. With so many important contributions in this field occurring in such a short time, there is great need for a resource that reflects the current thinking and incorporates the latest techniques.

The Practice of Hypnotism, Second Edition is that resource, providing the most up-to-date information available on hypnotism and hypnotherapy. Written by André Weitzenhoffer, PhD, a leading expert in the field for over forty-five years, the book examines the past and present thinking about hypnotic phenomena in an objective fashion. It provides valuable background information, ideas for future research, and a wealth of detailed, practical instruction for the production of hypnotic phenomena and the treatment of a large variety of health-related problems.

Like the first edition, this book aims to present hypnotism from a scientific perspective. It also includes the bases upon which the author and others in the field have made their judgments, enabling the reader to make independent determinations based on the most complete information.

The Practice of Hypnotism has evolved from the original two-volume set to a single, comprehensive volume in two parts: Foundations of Suggestion and Hypnosis; Clinical Hypnotism and Other Applications. Each chapter presents basic material at a relatively elementary level, gradually moving into the more advanced material at a comfortable pace.

This Second Edition features a wealth of new information that reflects the latest findings of research and clinical experience in using hypnotism, including:

  • Complete rewrites of chapters on measurements relevant to and on the state of hypnosis
  • New chapters on suggestion and suggestibility and the treatment of anxiety
  • A revised chapter on self-hypnosis, includ ing a detailed training procedure
  • Expanded and reorganized material on the Ericksonian approach<
  • Major revisions regarding the socio-cognitive and the cognitive-behavioral positions on hypnotic phenomena
  • Suggestions for future research

For the effective, safe, and well-informed practice of hypnotism, The Practice of Hypnotism, Second Edition is the definitive resource. It addresses the special interests and needs of practicing health care professionals, researchers, and other professionals; those new to hypnotism; and seasoned readers looking for accurate facts and a different scientific viewpoint on the subject. Like the first edition, this edition will also serve well as a textbook for self-study or to complement courses.

A newly revised, thoroughly updated edition of the most complete resource on hypnotism and hypnotherapy.

Designed to help researchers, health care providers, and other professionals safely and confidently produce and use hypnosis, The Practice of Hypnotism, Second Edition is filled with the most up-to-date information available on hypnotism and its techniques.

Offering the same comprehensive coverage as the very successful two-volume set of the first edition, it provides highly practical instruction on producing hypnotic effects and treating a wide variety of health and behavioral problems, and examines current thinking on these subjects. Written by a leading expert in the field, this book reports on the latest research findings and clinical experience, and includes many sections that have been extensively revised and expanded to cover recent developments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive reference in the field of clinical hypnosis
Hartland's book on hypnosis is a staple in the field. It has gone through many editions, this being the most recent and up-to-date. The information is scholarly, well presented, and clinically very useful. The authors do seem to have an academic bent and a bit of an anti-American bias. They question the importance of Milton Erickson's work and poo poo the NLP literature, while at the same time borrowing many clinical techniques from Erickson and NLP without giving due credit. That minor objection aside, I found this book to be richly clinically relevant and I would recommend it to anyone who uses hypnosis in clincial practice. It is one of the "Bibles" in the hypnotherapeutic literature.

2-0 out of 5 stars Average Book, Very Poor in Places
I consider the fact that this book was recommended to me as an authoritative tome at the start of my training to be one of the greatest hindrances of my career as a therapist. It contains a wide selection of stuff, Hartland thought you could cure 70% of problems with direct suggestions of ego-strength -oh really..! The pointlessly superficial material on Elman and Erickson's approaches is not worth reading. The techniques Hartland recommends are basically bog standard eye fixation and progressive relaxation scripts which you can get for free on the net. His recommendations on specific conditions are also very superficial and unhelpful. There is nothing here to inspire, or to expand our understanding of the mechanisms of induction or therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know and more!
Very well written and easy to follow. Much more than I expected on topics that therapists encounter. Great book for those that are interested in hypnosis and want to learn how it is applied. Excellent for those that are already practicing. Many scripts alone and how to use them make this book well worth the price. No steps left out. I have to keep this in the office and often return to it for it's valuable information. For start to finish this is worth it's weight for what you can learn and apply. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotherapy - A Client-Centered Approach
When I first studied for my hypnotherapists license several years ago the field was very practitioner driven - you took the client where you wanted them to go. Ms. LaBay's book turns this process around 180 degrees and instructs the reader how to create a client-driven session. This produces remarkable results because the client takes themselves to precisely where they need to go to deal with their issue.

The book itself is written in a clear and logical format with the different techniques explained in detail and then through analogy and case studies. Very helpful depending on your learning style - and guess what? NO SCRIPTS!

After reading Ms. LaBay's book I was so intrigued that I took her certification class in Seattle a week ago and am already applying her techniques in my practice with great results!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is THE handbook for learning the fundamentals of Hypnotherapy, setting up a practice, and keeping your sessions completely client centered. This book is clear, concise, easy and interesting to read. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning or expanding their skills as a hypnotherapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, well organized, and user friendly!

Mary Lee's client-centered approach makes the practice of Hypnotherapy easy and effective. I never do a hypnotherapy session without this book by my side! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A doubtful value :(
Such a carelessly written and edited title... too bad, since this is such an important specialty issue: how to harness patients' own potential to contribute to their own recovery and comfort. I had been hoping for some new insights to either hypnotic or counseling for patients with ongoing health issues.

There are so many other significant titles out there that I'm going to have to protest by returning this to Amazon.com and use the credit on two or three(!) that actually have some innovative ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent and articulate study
Hypnosis & Counselling In The Treatment Of Chronic Illness is a serious and thoughtful discussion of the healing benefits of hypnosis in the treatment of life-threatening and chronic diseases. Written by leading figures in the British Association for the Person Centered Approach David Frank and Bernard Mooney, Hypnosis & Counselling In The Treatment Of Chronic Illness carefully and considerately examines therapeutic hypnosis for matters such as childbirth, pain relief, stammering, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, emotional health, and more. Hypnosis & Counselling In The Treatment Of Chronic Illness is an intelligent and articulate study of this branch of alternative medicine that is suitable for professionals in the field as well as interested non-specialist general readers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Basic, logical, nuts & bolts explaination of hypnosis ever!
This is the most basic, logical nuts & bolts explaination of hypnosis ever written in a humorous style that allows the information IN without the High Drama or boring you to death. Dr. Stockwell really knows her stuff. I hope she gives personal trainings or classe in hypnosis as she sounds like she would be a kick to learn from. How wonderfully she presented her facts, especially of the brain, in a way that I could relate to the information. I finally realize that I have been doing self-hypnosis all of my life...now I have the ability to focus and do it with purpose. Thanks for writting this book, I look for more. Great gift item!

1-0 out of 5 stars quackery 101
I agree with the various other reviews I've seen. Like every other type of therapist out there, Shelley Stockwell is a QUACK!!! I'm not paying $100/hour to lie down thinking that my life will improve. The only practical long-term way to lose weight is to do gastric bypass surgery. All the other ways lead to regain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written. Misleading title.
This book contains some good information, but is is poorly written and poorly organized. There are lots of spelling and grammatical mistakes, making me wonder if the author is not a native English speaker. She also channeled some of the book from her spirit guides, so maybe they don't spell so good in the spirit world. In any case, she should have had a good editor. There are much better books on hypnosis available, so I would look elsewhere rather than buying this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I am not even sure this book deserves it's title
This is one of the worst books ever written. I am not even sure it can be described as a book on hypnosis. If I have to put a title to this book, it would be "An anthology of an unassuming human being". Please do not buy this book if you want to learn anything about hypnosis. It has nothing to do with hypnosis, except part you with your money. I have read virtually all the major texts on hypnosis. Stick to Ormond McGill's books on the subject if you want to learn anything. Anyone giving more than one star to this book is basically being untruthful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misled
This book isn't very practical. The information it provides is very airy-fairy and not very rooted. My biggest gripe about the book is that it teaches religious undertones to what I believe to be a purely scientific subject. I don't really want to know about my spiritual guides - I'm not the type to buy into that stuff. That being said, the book does cover the physiology related to hypnosis quite well. I suppose I bought the book with the wrong idea in mind - the title conveys to me a book detailing how to make money and become happy practicing hypnosis as a profession, whereas the book is actually about making money and being happy through the use of hypnosis on yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the pile!
These authors are perhaps best known for their book entitled 'Principles of Self Hypnosis' (now out of print) which for many years was the most regularly recommended primer on this subject. This academic work completely updates the former book and adds much new research to the subject area. It is very extensive in nature and written in a style that facilitates access to both the professional and the lay person wishing to use self hypnosis for their own benefit. The book is accompanied by an excellent audiotape which clearly demonstrates many of the techniques described in the book. Whilst appearing a little expensive when compared with other self hypnosis books, this book and audiotape (Available separately as Steps to Self Hypnosis) can definitely claim to be 'top of the pile' in quality of content, research and writing style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I found this a helpful, clear guide to self hypnosis. After reading it and following the instructions in the exercises I was able to enter hypnosis and make positive changes. The tape was helpful too. I heartily recommend this to anyone who is interested in experiencing self hypnosis for themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars above the rest
Much better than most self hypnosis books - this gives you step by step instructions on how to do it yourself without the need for a tape recorder. Its changed publishers- got a new cover and is definitely worth owning. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Antiquated
This book is from the turn of the 20th century. It is antiquated and irrelevant, except for those interested in the history of hypnosis. If you want a historical relic, this book is for you. If you want to learn modern hypnosis, don't bother.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hypnosis: Theory, Practice and Application
I obtained this book from the local library. The copyright date is 1950! That may explain why it seems so dated. It is! On the other hand, that very fact made the book interesting. While I don't intend to purchase this book, it was worth a quick scan--especially for the inductions-- to see how hypnosis was viewed over fifty years ago compared to today.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped.
I was really looking forward to reading this book and didn't even finish it all the way. I don't know very much about the author and I am not sure where he gets his information but it seems very outdated and not some of the information seems wrong. I am glad I didn't pay full price for this book. I am sure there is a better book on hypnois then this one. My advice is to not waste your money on this book. ... Read more
