4-0 out of 5 stars Alright
Basic Arrhythmias, I found, difficult to first grasp. The formal in which the text is laid out in is tough to read. The ECG strips were very detailed and easy to read. I have never seen any other ECG books with as many practice strips as this one. I found this book complemented what I had learned from other "paramedic" textbooks such as Sanders' book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, simple, and simple!
I have to say that this is the best college text book I have ever used. Clear, concise explanations of semi-complicated topics. I could not ask any more out of a book, except maybe lowering the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars How "Basic Arrhythmias" helped me in paramedic school.
I was an basic and intermediate EMT for years. Intimidated by learning how to interpret and analyze EKG's, it was, by far, one of the most frustrating topic for me in paramedic class. My instructor recommended the "Basic Arrhythmias" book by Gail Walraven and in no time at all interpreting and analyzing EKG's became easy and soon after I was doing it like a second nature.

Now, as an EMT instructor, I recommend "Basic Arrhythmias" to my students and I am confident that they will find peace of mind in learning EKG's, just as I did.

Thank you Gail Walraven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for programmed instruction.
I teach a Basic EKG Course in staff development and I highly recommend this book for all levels of health care providers from unit coordinators to nurse managers. The arrythmia practice strips are excellent and having the correct answers in the back of the book allows the adult learner to verify their interpertations or seek further learning in an area. The explaination of a difficult subject is made easy. I have used this book for several years and look forward to the new editions to see what else Gail Walraven has included.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most helpful medical books I have ever purchased
I learned disrhythmia interpretation in a weekend with the help of this book, and still pull the book off the shelf ten years later to brush up on my skills. I recommend this book for anyone needing to learn and understand how to read a cardiac monitor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A FINE VIROLOGY YARDSTICK
There is hardly any significant fact about viruses that missed-out in this edition of "Fields Virology". Page after page, this sound all-inclusive reference doles out authoritative information on both viruses and viral syndromes. From taxonomy to etiology, metamorphosis to replication; the analyses of this text is grand. The same applies to its attached CD-ROM. Its practical outlook was intended to benefit both microbiologists and pathologists. Bernard Fields and his colleagues made their mark with this book. It is a great effort.
However, most botanist may not be pleased to know that little attention was paid to plant viruses. Again, many potential buyers may be demoralized by the rather high price that this virology-set demands.

Book Description

Exploring Medical Language provides students in health care educational programs with the basic knowledge of medical language they need to communicate clearly and understand communication from other health care team members. LaFleur's strength has always been its clear presentation of not only medical terms built from word parts, but also those not built from word parts, which are sometimes omitted from other texts. The text also reviews anatomic terminology. Another popular feature of the book is its wealth of exercises that help the student memorize the word parts and their meanings, so that they can combine the parts to form medical terms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THANKS FOR THE "A" MYRNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I bought "Exploring Medical Language" I knew absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing about Medical Terminology.
And to tell you the truth, when I first opened this huge, intimidating, monster of a book, It scared... me... I mean, wouldn't "rhabdomyosarcoma" or "esophagogastroduodenoscopy"
frighten you (just a bit) I thought, nooooo way.

But I opened it, read it, did the cool excersises, listen the the audio tapes, played a bit with the CD-R.

She begins at the beginning.....Little baby steps.

All of a sudden... I was like, I get it! I really get it!
Not only that, but I was beginning to enjoy it.

The prefix, suffix, and word roots suddenely become beautiful, flowing words that make sense.
Myrna LaFleur Brooks made this book come alive, interesting, and allowed medical language to become a little bit like music.
Well, a little!!!! Thanx for the "A" Myrna! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source for Therapists Working with VPI
This book gave our therapist a clear set of instructions for working with my daughter, who has VPI and a submucus cleft palate. Using these techniques, after over a year of traditional therapy, within six months of three sessions a week this therapist had my daughter saying most of her sounds. It gave my baby her voice so she could tell me with words what she had, up until then, been telling me with gestures and tone of voice.

If your child has any leakage of air into his or her nose when speaking, this book is a must read. Read it yourself and pass it to your speech therapist. My daughter is now in a position where they can evaluate what, if any, surgical intervention will help with her speech.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for all parents of children with cleft palate!
As a mother with a child who has a cleft palate, I was absolutely thrilled with this book. I have recommended it as a "must read" to all the parents of children with cleft palates that I know and to our healthcare professionals. It answered all the questions I have had, but could never find answers to, about my child's developing speech and how to manage his care. It contains easy to follow, useable techniques for improving speech production that are simple to apply and yield unbelievably fast results. Some of the topics of interest to me include: the basic mechanics of speech production, how to encourage early speech, how to recognize all the different types of cleft palate speech errors and how and when to correct them, how to make the most of Early Intervention and school district provided services, and, most importantly, specific exercises to encourage production of new sounds. The speech pathologist we work with, while excellent, does not have extensive experience in cleft palate speech. This book enabled her to design an exercise program tailored to my child's current needs and we plan to use it as a guide for each step of his speech development. After reading it I feel confident that I can actively and intelligently participate in my child's therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stupendous achievement
This book is simply the definitive volume on the implementation for speech therapy in individuals with cleft palate, hypernasal speech, and genetic syndromes that result in these conditions with particular emphasis on velo-cardio-facial syndrome. This book was a collaborative effort supported by The Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome Educational Foundation, an organization committed to spreading state-of-the-art knowledge to both professionals and lay people. The techniques described are so cutting edge that many who would apply more traditional (and less effective) speech therapy procedures will probably feel threatened. The price of this volume is small compared the potential thousands of dollars that might otherwise be wasted on ineffective procedures. Speaking from a position of over 30 years of experience in this field, I could not be more thrilled that this volume has reached print. It is a stupendous achievement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Golding Kushner book less than helpful
I purchased this book because it was highly recommended by the Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome (VCFS) Foundation. I was told that it was "the bible" for helping develop speech in VCFS kids. There were only a few pages on VCFS and the thrust of those pages was an argument against the use of sign. On a personal level I am the mother of a VCFS child, and am acquanted with 100's of other VCFS parents, nearly all of whom use sign WITH GREAT SUCCESS with our children.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who is a layperson in speech pathology. I would not recommend it to anyone who has a child that is non verbal as a result of anything other than a cleft palate. The book only appropriate for Speech Language Pathologists or Developmental Pediatricians. I can't imagine anyone else finding it helpful. For that matter our Speech Language Pathologist didn't find it helpful either. ... Read more

Book Description

Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses integrates current thinking and research regarding the learning of undergraduate students with principles of best practice in assessment and teaching. The book will help readers see the connection among three powerful trends in higher education today: the focus on learning and learners, the emphasis on the assessment of learning, and the need to continually improve what those in higher education do. Grounded in principles of constructivist learning theory and continuous improvement, the book provides opportunities for readers to make connections with what they already know about assessment, integrate new information with their current knowledge, and try new approaches to enhance the learning of their students. Readers will consider what it means to shift from a teacher-centered paradigm of instruction to a learner-centered paradigm. The book offers practical approaches to help formulate intended learning outcomes, gather feedback from students to guide instruction, and develop scoring criteria for guiding and evaluating student work. Readers will learn how to assess students' ability to think critically, address enduring and emerging issues and problems in their disciplines, and use portfolios to promote and evaluate student learning. Numerous questions to guide implementation, as well as examples from a variety of disciplines and institutions are provided. For higher education administrators or those in faculty development. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great surprise
As a faculty developer and instructional designer I am constantly on the lookout for good resources. Every once in a while, a jewel turns up. I must say that this is a pure jewel. I have had my copy for about six eeks and have read it once and am in the process of rereading it a second time.

For faculty who really want a good understanding of student-centered instruction as well as assessment, I higly recommend this book.

It is replete with examples and the section on developing and using rubrics is exceptional.

I consider this book a must have for faculty member's professional library.

3-0 out of 5 stars A letdown....
Any large 2 volume reference text certainly looks impressive. But, unfortunately, NICP is only superficially attractive. I have used this as a reference many times and have closed the book without gaining any satisfactory answers. Considering it's size and price, NICP is a huge letdown. The online subscription service is costly, but at least it gets continuously updated and has videos to boot.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Regrets Overall
...
Last year I read pretty much the whole 3rd edition cover to cover, so I feel qualified to comment. When I started, the appeal of this book for me was: (1) it looked fairly comprehensive, (2) it was well written, and (3) a lot of time was devoted to teaching ways of thinking and defining what, say, a neuro-urologist does, in addition to facts about diseases.

In regards to (1), I still think it is one of the most comprehensive books out there. But it is also the most verbose. The editors should mandate that contributors are not allowed to say anything that is self-evident, especially anything along the lines of "a multi-disciplinary approach is best" or "the likelihood ranges from 0-70%" or "starts with a thorough history and physical examination". Whole sections, even whole chapters are devoted to this kind of blather.

I agree ... that volume 1 is much better than volume 2. Volume 2 has some really really long and tedious chapters that could easily be (mediocre) textbooks unto themselves. Overall a book like Merritt's looks better for the neurological diseases than volume 2 at this point. I hope the editors take this to heart in the next edition and radically revise this volume.

In regards to (2) it is very well written and you'd be surprised what a difference that makes in terms of how enjoyable it is to read. Kudos to the editors on this.

In regards to (3) I continue to think the "more than just facts" approach make this an attractive book for residents looking for an introduction to the discipline. But as I said before, there are better books when it comes to concise and usable presentation of the neurological diseases.

There a few outright errors, but some serious omissions particuarly in the area of treatment, ...

A couple of other points are worth mentioning: (1) The question book is excellent. The questions are intelligent, and there are only a few mistakes in the entire book. Hats of to Misulis on this one. (2) The website is not as useful as you might think. It isn't updated all that much, and it is structured to thwart would-be copyright violators more than to facilitate easy use. Count on not being able to read more than a few paragraphs without jumping to a new link. In the next edition, I hope you can opt out of web access in exchange for a discount. ...

All in all I don't regret reading this book. I don't think there's another book out there that offers all that this book does, and if they can continue to improve it, it will become the standard text of neurology.

4-0 out of 5 stars .
This book is too highly priced, and fails to live up to expectations. A book this expensive should be a superb reference, with a comprehensiveness second to none. Nothing of the sort may be said about NICP. Diagnosis and treatment sections need serious expanding.

The best part of the book is Volume I. First rate chapters on the clinical approach, some of the best written, save the book from publishing purgatory.

3-0 out of 5 stars More expensive than its worth
The book has some good chapters but overall, it cannot serve as a reference text. Bakers Neurology on CD ROM is almost half the price and packs much more information with excellent references.

4-0 out of 5 stars About the comment below.
I agree that the book is certainly (too?) expensive, but as to the remarks that it's incomplete in even essential details- I beg to differ. Incompleteness is not among NCP's pertinent characteristics. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs
The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.

I found the CD-ROM included was very buggy in my computer. While it was helpful to see everything happening at once, the videos' content should have been more closely watched, since during a chapter about mechanical ventilation saying bag at around a rate of 40, will clearly show the person at the head ventilating at a rate of closer to 70 or 80.

5-0 out of 5 stars best so far
I'm going to make it short. I just passed my neo resuscitation recertification because of this book. What makes this book so special is its illustrations (each illustration is worth 1000 words or so)and its flowing text.If you need this type of book, than I believe this one is the best so far on American market; there is one better in Europe and Australia, but they have slightly diferent guidelines which may be better than ours, but hey, maybe one they we get to the point where we have world guidelines. Believe me, I have researched alot to find the best book on this topic, and this book is it. I recommend it to all MDs, critical RNs, neonatal respiratory therapists(RRT-NPS)and other medical staff that is often in contact with little bambinos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy
NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

Dont make a mistake. Unless you have money to throw away and dont care about quality then go ahead and buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be the last on your list for resp. care knowledge
I am an RT student and this was one of our required texts. We were the first class to have this book inflicted on us. Numerous mistakes have been found, by the students! Some of the answers to the review questions at the end of each chapter are nowhere to be found. We are all having a book burning party at the end of the semester. (That is not a joke) Please do not subject yourself to this book! Egans rules!

2-0 out of 5 stars stay away
I really hate to say it , but this book is just not worth 1/20th of any other major respiratory care book (for example Egan's fundamentals of RC or Dean Hess et al, RC: principles and practice) I feel bad saying it since I know how much hard work it takes to get a book to be printed. The whole design, bad fonts, cheap paper, and organization of the book is really bad. You could gather 2 or 3 chapters that are decent, but we all know that for the book to be successful it must have at least 3/4 of its material acceptable to read and enjoy. I doubt this book will make it into 2nd ed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the money!
I'm an Advanced Practitioner of Massage Therapy and find this book VERY helpful. The Muscle Energy Techniques (M.E.T.s) are explained very thoroughly, and the accompanying drawings, and or pictures, are very helpful. While familiar with the M.E.T.s, having this book as a reference for all the upper body muscles, and their positioning for the best M.E.T. applications, is very rewarding. I'd recommend this book highly to anyone that has a basic understanding of the therapeutic aspects of massage and M.E.T.s.
Mr. Chiatow and Ms. Delany, PLEASE!!! I can't wait for the next volume! I'm sure the Lower Body will be as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques - Vol. I
This is a really clearly written, concise book, with drawings and pictures of muscle positions, trigger points, etc. I bought the Jane Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Books before this one came out, and for the money wish I had bought the Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Tech. Book. Unless you are a Physician, who wants to inject the patient's trigger points with a saline solution, and then you better be very exact in your aim with the needle, I think the Clinical Application of Neurom. Tech. Book is a much more practical, useful, hands on, straight forward book that addresses all the trigger points, origins and insertions of the muscles in a very user friendly way. Until this book came out, Jane Travell's was the only great reference guide; but what patient really likes injections? Now this book surpasses Dr. Travells, in that all the material in it is useful and usable. Can't wait for Vol. II, Lower Body, to come out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
As a small field as medical physics, it is hard to find a nice book as KHAN¡¯s book. Its previous versions already serve as standard textbooks for readers from introductory to medium level. This new updated version covers all the fundamental topics in this field as all the two previous versions, and will definitely add more credits on its reputation not only because all the core materials have been better tailored, but also all those new chapters in PART III have covered almost all of the cutting edge technology. Several chapters, like Chapter 9, and Chapter 10 is the best materials you can find for the basic concepts, but as a textbook the figure legend seems to be too concise. The chapters for IMRT and HDR, etc., are also the best review on those topics, which save me lots of time in the library for searching related reviews in journals. It is really enjoyable to read it.

This is such an amazing book, which reminds me all the best textbook in my medical school and graduate school. I¡¯d like to give five star to show my respect and gratitude for the author and editor team. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious in-depth coverage of important field
This book is a veritable tour de force from leading researchers in the area of neuroscience. It is comprehensive in scope going from modern molecular and cellular neuroscience to cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. Includes strong sections on developmental neuroscience, sensory and motor neuroscience, and regulatory systems. The book is extremely well and attractively produced; the graphics are superb. Exceptional value for money. It has been written by leading scholars involved in teaching neuroscience at the graduate level (although it may be suited to advanced undergraduates and academic medical students). Definitely the leading book in the area; required reading for professional neuroscientists and academic clinicians.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful review of neuroscience.
To me as bibliophiliac and a cognitive psychologist interested in neurobiology, this is the textbook of choice and an object of desire. It is very up-to-date and well-written. Although some people have detected some lack of coherence in this work, I find it refreshing that the sections recognizably come from different research teams with somewhat different points of emphasis, but without anyone pushing his own scientific interests on the expense of those of the readers. This also guarantees that it is not only an accumulation of facts but has also interesting theoretical discussions by leading researchers. It is optimal for readers having at least some laypeople knowledge about biology, medicine, or neuroscience, and just want to know more (possibly everything), or who require a thorough and citable review of a certain topic. Readers completely new to the field may find it difficult to pick out the information suited for a beginner level - a less voluminous book would be more helpful for them. I would rather not recommend it for undergraduates courses. I would also prefer a somewhat stronger emphasis on cognitive neuroscience - after all, a few hundred pages more would do no harm...!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too detailed
This text is not appropiate for any for introductory class to neuroscience at any level (whether grad or undergrad). The depth and detail leaves the reader confused at best. Perhaps it is suitable for an advanced gradute seeking to remedy any detail oriented holes. For all others, it is a precursor to a headache.
The smart money would go with the Kandel who clearly defines
his purpose at the outset of his classic book.
(I notice that the reviewer ,who bestowed the text 4 stars, and the author both call San Diego their home.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Fundamental!
I was rather lucky to take my chances and go-for-a-buy for this title instead of the much more cited "Kandel-Fourth Edition"... The book is really awesome, well-written and edited, with many good first-time-seen illustrations. It spans the whole field of contemporary Neuroscience (from biochemical to cognitive and clinical) with extreme efficacy and reference. The authors did a great job integrating the contents of each section with clarifying examples and extensive references, making it ideal even for new-comers. As a medical student with research interests in this vast field, I was very pleased with my decision to buy this textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must in any med-school
This book can make any person understand the basic aspects of Pathology, it requires a good level of Histology knowledge ( not more than a good approach of the previous course ). Excellent images and explanations make this issue a good purchase.

The only drawback I've found is the fancy words the authors use to define something it's easy to understand, but after all I think it's a vey good choice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Serious ASL Students!
I'll admit that when I purchased this book, I was doing it more for an addition to my library than for actual use. Being a Deaf American Sign Language teacher, I'd often used several other basic ASL books and thought them sufficient, to a point. However, when I got my hands on this book, I was thrilled with the extra mile the writers and illustrators went when producing it.

This book is similar to "A Basic Course in ASL," and some may find it hard to dicern between the two. However, this book has many more practice sentences and conversation. Many more opportunities to use your new-found skills. Many more illustrations. There is use of slang and idiomatic language that isn't found often in other resources.

You can purchase a videotape to accompany this book. If you are learning on your own, that really is a must-have. Otherwise, this book offers a full course in beginning your trip to understanding true American Sign Language (versus Signed English or Contact Sign). Highly recommended by this deafie! :v)

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Vocab...too bad most of it is localized
This was a text I used in Beginning ASL II. There is a supplemental video that goes along with the book as well.

While there is tons of vocabulary used in this text, most of it is used the the Pacific Northwest area. This is not a great book if you're taking classes in the midwest or even the south. I was really glad that I had a professor that could show me local signs in my State/City/neighborhood.

There is some examples of ASL grammar included, but nothing hard and fast. As I've learned, the grammar has been easier to pick up.

The video I mentioned is very helpful since most of the exercises revolve around certain scenes that are acted out. There are some werid camera angles during a few black and white "intermissions".

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book.... Not recomended for self-study.
Good textbook for an ASL course.
Written by experts teaching the ASL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Textbook
I have taught sign language courses for 10 years and find this book to be a good resource for beginners. However, in the midst of teaching this course, my "video" was lifted from my classroom. I would like to purchase the video without having to purchase the book again. Aaaah! What does one do?

3-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons
I used this text for my ASL 1 and ASL 2 courses in college, and I think this text was better organized compared to some other texts for learning sign. However, some of the pictures are a bit difficult to decifer and some of the signs are repeated throughout the text. I would like to see the video and the text as a package deal for fifty one dollars, perhaps that would be more worth one's money. ... Read more
