5-0 out of 5 stars The best book avialable for the subject at this time.
Dr. Goldman covers the topic from A-Z. He cover both the smaller (spider) and larger verins in his book which is not a large volume despite its price. He provides the young physician with a concise, orderly manner with whihc to approach the problems in his practice, the tools, medications, methodology and and the forms both for record keeping and legal implications. It is a "turn key" program that if done with attention to detail will serve the new pracitcioner of this medical discipline well, whether dermatologist or plastic surgeon ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple. Easy.
This is a useful textbook to have as a handy, quick reference. Not optimal for studying or new learning, but a helpful review. The material is thoroughly researched & easily accessible. I give it a "B".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a short-hand, easy to reference version of the full sized Rosen's. It is incredibly useful and easy to use. Great for use in the ED while on a shift or for reading quickly on a subject that you want to learn more about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best if used in the ED
Treatment and diagnostic suggestions are catered for a fully-equipped ED. Less useful in an urgent care or similar environment. Otherwise an excellent resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars concise and easy guide
As a nurse practitioner in an urgent care setting, I have found this book a valuable tool. It is quick and easy to use, yet there is detailed information at my fingertips. It is one of the first books I pull out when I have a question regarding care. ... Read more

Book Description

This textbook provides a true introduction to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which has become the dominant research technique in cognitive neuroscience. Although there is extraordinary interest in fMRI among researchers, instructors, and students alike, its instruction has faced a set of challenges. Existing texts are targeted toward practicing scientists in the field, and assume a level of expertise not possessed by most students. Furthermore, most students do not have access to fMRI equipment and data, so they have no opportunity to gain hands-on experience. This textbook overcomes these limitations by presenting a comprehensive overview of all aspects of fMRI, designed with undergraduate students, graduate students, and beginning researchers in mind.

The book progresses through 15 chapters. It begins with an introduction to fMRI and its history, principles, and technical requirements. The following several chapters cover the physics of fMRI, with careful attention devoted toward relating abstract concepts to research applications. Subsequent chapters cover the basic biological properties of the fMRI signal, including its spatial and temporal properties and its variability. Systematic discussions of research design and experimental analysis are included, and will be of particular interest to the many students with graduate or medical school aspirations. The book ends with discussions of future directions for fMRI, not only in terms of advances in understanding the brain and methodological improvements, but also in the integration of fMRI with other research techniques.

Included with every copy of the book is a comprehensive CD-ROM containing study questions for each chapter of the book, suggested lab exercises, fMRI data sets including both functional and anatomical data, a tools section, and compete glossary.

The authors' goal was to create a book that is sufficiently scientifically rigorous for researchers in the field, but also accessible enough to be easily read and understood by beginning students. All chapters are copiously illustrated, with key terms described in a marginal glossary, and have annotated lists of references. The book can be used as the primary text for classes in fMRI, or as a secondary text for cognitive neuroscience, research methods, or other courses. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic text but...
This remains an excellent textbook on neuroradiology. I think it should still be an essential read for a neuroradiology fellow. It is probably a little too much for a resident to "read through" during his/her neurorad rotations. The pictures are of high quality. But, the text book has one big drawback in that it is becoming more and more outdated. There is no significant mention of Diffusion/perfusion/PET imaging. I found this book to be a valuable read to gain knowlegde of the basics of neuroradiology. It bridges the gap between less detailed books such as the Mosby Handbook Series (also by A. Osborn) and a more complete reference text like Atlas' MRI of the Brain and Spine. This is still an excellent book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars No new edition is forthcoming
I agree that this book is awesome. Those of us waiting for an update are doomed to disappointment, however. Dr. Osborne has been teaching at AFIP regularly, and has stated many times that her literary efforts will henceforth be dedicated to electronic-based media (eg Palm-Pilot), and that she is not planning any new editions of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated....
This is a very good neuroradiology text. It is useful for those studying radiology as well as neurology. Illustrations and tables are wonderful. The brief pathophysiology of diseases is very useful. However, it is a bit incomplete because it has not been revised. It does not have PET or MR SPECT.

5-0 out of 5 stars But:
To quote a reviewr below: "I hope that Anne Osborne will come up with a new edition after more than 7 years".

No kidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! Wish the new edition comes out!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship
This is a concise book, perfect for MSIIIs starting their IM Clerkship; it is also great for Step 2 review and the Medicine Shelf. MSIIIs can use this as an IM starting point and fill in the details concerning their own patients using Harrison's, Up to Date, or Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but not by itself
First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book that gives you the key facts about many diseases. This is information that will help you answer questions during rounds and on exams. It's very well done, with nice illustrations. It's easy to get through, which is important since there's so much to learn during the Internal Medicine rotation (and not enough time!). I also recommend:

1) Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient by Ferri because you need something to help you take care of patients. First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship isn't great for managing patients or working them up

2) Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia because you need something for drug information (if you have epocrates, then you don't necessarily need this). First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship doesn't have much about drugs. Another plus is it's fairly cheap.

3) Internal Medicine Clerkship: 150 Biggest Mistakes because you need something that gives you the nuts and bolts of the rotation. This book tells you how to preround, give great oral case presentations, prepare complete write-ups, and impress during attending rounds. A lot of tips on how to get great evaluations. Not much of this is is in First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship.

4) Access to uptodate or some other medicine reference to help you work up patients.

5) Pretest book - you need to do questions before the shelf exam.

Bottom line is First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book but you need other things to help you do well during the rotation. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine clerkship
The best book I have used in medical so far. Questions I was pimped on during rounds, issues relevent to patient management, weird physical exam findings, strange syndromes (Felty's anyone?)were all covered in this book. I pretty much memorized the whole book, and all my attendings and residents during my medicine clerkship commented that my fund of knowledge was excellent. Everyone gave me honors, and it was literally all because of this book. Probably not adequate enough for the NBME shelf exam however, but combine it with some old kaplan step 2 questions and honoring that should be no sweat either. GET THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Maybe only book you need for this clerkship.
Great book. It's like a potent offering of what you need to know for your Medicine clerkship. It is highly distilled, has quick easy-to-read facts/pearls, and leaves out the crud. I lost mine but I am constantly wanting to go back and review it. I may just buy it again, even though I am done with my Medicine rotation and I am pursuing Surgery as a career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review is Just a Review
I am a military flight surgeon applying to Orthopaedic Surgery residencies this fall. I bought this book to help give me an overview of current practice. The book covers basic sciences and all of the subspecialties comprehensively and concisely in outline format. Diagrams are minimal and crude but they do adequately support to text.

Because it is a REVIEW book, it does not try to teach basic information to the reader; it is assumed that you are a knowledgeable orthopaedic practitioner. I found that, even as a practicing physician, I needed to review my anatomy and orthopaedics at a more basic level in order to get the most out of this book.

I was able to quickly identify some of my weaknesses and, more importantly, become more fluent with orthopaedic jargon. I no longer rely on this book for my basic source material. Instead, I am concentrating on reading the classic orthopaedic texts for my primary education -- I will rely on this book as a REVIEW only. In that capacity it earns its five star review.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice way to keep up-date(and up-grade) in the wide field..
This is a very true and clear way to keep up-date in the wide field of the orthopaedics. Iam a Orthopaedist and these kind of books help me a lot, and make my textbooks alive (I mean Campbell's, Watson-Jones, Apley's , Mercer's and others). Is not a book for junior surgeons its more easier for senior orthopaedist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review text, poor proofreading by the editors
Miller and co. have the unenviable task of compressing all of orthopaedics into a concise text for review. Remarkably so, they have improved on an already invaluable resource for residents and practicing orthopods alike. Given the number of syntax errors and content inconsistencies (see hand section) it appears that they may have rushed this edition to print, thus the "4 stars" ranking. This text still remains the standard to which other review books are compared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Orthopaedics (Miller 4th ed)
Absolutely outstanding!!! An indispensible review of a very broad and detail oriented topic. Absolutely crucial for the upcoming boards. The updated Sports Medicine chapter was a complete bonus with exquisite attention paid to sports injuries of the upper extremity (an often ignored topic). Congrats to Miller on assembling an excellent team of authors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I am a chief resident in orthopaedic surgery currently studying for my written board exam. As I have read through this text I have been consistently surprised by the number of blantant mistakes and inaccuracies, especially since this is the SECOND edition. Example: anatomy of ulnar nerve at the wrist p. 544--absosutely wrong; several of the anatomy diagrams have no lables (which were included in the 1st edition); many non-sense sentences such as under discussion of the patella: "Somewhat triangular in shape, the apex of the patella gives rise to the patella, and they fuse sometime between the second and sixth year of life." It reads as though is was written by a medical student instead of "the most reliable experts in the field" as touted on the cover. Not worth the [money]. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief, to the point but complete
As a med student this book is a great intro text to understanding EKG's. Its written simple and to the point, and re-highlights key points, such as the 5 key malignancies in PVC's to detect. I doubt it would be sufficient for a cardiologist, but for med student/basic IM residency should suffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title doesn't lie!
A colleague recommended this book to me after I lamented that Dubin's competing text was amusing and easy to understand, but didn't really foster any permanent functional understanding of EKGs. Like Dubin's text, Thaler's EKG Book takes a leisurely approach to deconstructing the EKG. However, Thaler's text is a much more functional guide, offering better explanations in a more comprehensive approach to interpreting EKGs. Thaler's text works not only because it is easy to understand, but also because it provides more clinical scenarios, and has a more complete discussion of a wide variety of abnormal EKGs. This book is far superior to Dubin's. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
As a resident with many years of medical training behind me, I've used my share of ECG textbooks. The two best books for the beginner medical student/intern to use when learning the ECG are Thaler's book (this one) and Dubin's Rapid Interpretation. Both explain the EKG very well, but in my opinion the clarity and simplicity of the physiological and EKG explanations in Thaler's book are unsurpassed.

Despite being a rather slim volume, it is remarkably comprehensive. There is even a chapter towards the end on rare, non cardiac diseases with EKG manifestations. With due respect, the reviewer who said Thaler's book lacks sufficient information doesn't have a clue. Its really very complete, for everyone except Cardiologists and Cardiac fellows, who will definitely prefer Marriot's.

For everyone else, The Only Ekg Book You'll Ever Need is the only Ekg book you'll ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRODUCTION TO EKG'S
This book was awesome!! I started with Dubin's, which was okay, but it just wasn't giving me the basics. This book was very helpful in understanding the basics of EKG's and really helped me on my exams. Easy to read- I read a few chapters between study sessions and I found it is a great reference book to supplement classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too superficiel for people, who wants to master ECG's
I have read this book, its not the worst book on the market, but is most definitely not the best!
It merely gives you a first hand approach to basic ECG interpretation!
But it's ok as an introduction to ECG's, but don't expect that you are a ECG wiz after you read it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject, for what it is
This is a very comprehensive book on the subject of neurology. Unfortunately, I was only interested in about 25% of the book's contents---those dealing with mental illness. Maybe I should have bought Neurology for Psychiatrists, but that book is smaller, so this one probably has almost as much psychiatric information anyway. Unlike many of the other reviewers, I actually LIKE the amount of detail in this book, although since I don't have an M.D. or a Ph.D. I could not understand all of it. I did also notice from the other reviews that there is a demand for a for user-friendly book dealing with Neurology, that parents can read to help understand their child's neurological deficits. Well, I have the solution! My book, The Failures of American Medicine (available at Amazon for [price]), contains five chapters on mental illness, and is both technical and relatively easy to read. I hope I have provided an answer for the parents who are struggling to find understandable information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Among the best....
This text is not easy to read, but it packs a lot of information. You can almost guarantee that this book will provide useful info on any neurological disease. It is one of the best reference books for general neurology. I also find its end-chapter references to be fairly complete. One criticism is that it does not offer too many tables or illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment on the review from Orleans
The sentiments expressed by the father are admirable, if somewhat inaccurate in areas. But I don't think parents should be asked to read *this* book - it's a specialist medical textbook! By all means, laypersons should read up on medical issues affectin their lives. But I think more efficient methods would be to read patient summaries etc - literature written speciffically so laypeople can *understand* what they are reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ENDURING CLASSIC
This text, one of the finest works ever written on nervous pathology and the varied clinical manifestations they evoke, continues to occupy its eminent position in the field. A work by legends, it has become one on its own - no other textbook in existence elucidates neurological disease with such clarity and honesty.

Magnificent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many parents should read this
This is a standard medical textbook written for med students and residents; for laypeople it is not easy reading. However, millions of parents should read it, even if it's difficult.

The human brain is so complex that no two of us have identical capabilities or limitations; but we all have limitations. Most of us are fortunate to have limitations slight enough so that we learn just with the usual help of parents, friends, teachers and community to transcend or work around our limitations and lead full, productive lives as adults. However, a significant fraction of children have limitations severe enough to need extra help. There's where the trouble starts.

The problems usually get noticed in nursery school, kindergarten or first grade. Unfortunately, most such children's problems get pigeonholed into one of a small number of descriptive phrases, such as "hyperactive", "dyslexic", "autistic", "attention deficit disorder", "adacemically challenged", or some such. By and large, these descriptions are usually grossly correct descriptions of observed behavior, but they are frequently incomplete, and distressingly often they are wrong. For example, it is essentially impossible for a neurologist working with a psychiatrist to determine whether a child less than six years old is actually autistic, but four- and five-year olds are routinely labelled "autistic." And once these labels are applied, they tend to stick; this can lead to incomplete help, or help of the wrong kind.

These failures are not the fault of teachers, social workers, psychologists or physicians. They come about because accurate differential diagnosis of the hundreds of different neurological and biochemical problems that can cause behavioral problems is extraordinarily difficult, requiring more extended observation, and in many cases more psychological and neurological testing, than can be made available to all the children with problems. But if the problem is misdiagnosed or incompletely diagnosed, the help that's given to the child is unlikely to be as effective as if an accurate diagnosis were known.

Parents cannot replace professionals, but they can and should supplement professionals in these situations. Parents observe their children in a wider variety of circumstances, and for more of the time, than any professional can hope to do. By propiding accurate descriptions of the variations in a child's behavior depending on the circumstances in which the child is placed, parents can greatly assist neurologists and psychologists in making an accurate diagnosis.

But what's relevant? Every professional is used to being deluged with irrelevancies from his or her clients. To be able to provide information that's relevant and helpful, the parents need to have some idea of how the brain works, the ways in which brain function can be impaired, the extent to which children compensate for such impairments on their own, and what behaviors may indicate a problem that falls partly or completely outside the conventional pigeonholes. For parents whose young children are said to have intellectual or emotional problems of any sort, this book is *MUST* reading, even if it takes a year to read it. The basic knowledge of neurology given in this book is enough to let parents decide whether the behaviors they see are fully consistent with the label that's being pinned on the child, or whether further exploration, and perhaps different treatment or assistance, may be called for.

This still leaves the problem of where such parents can go for more advice and help; that I can't provide an answer to. But at least the parents in such cases can search for additional professional advice.

In short, if your young child has a problem in school, read this book, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes you! ... Read more

Book Description

This definitive reference work replaces Konigsmark and Gorlin's Genetic and Metabolic Deafness (1976). Whereas the earlier volume covered 151 genetic conditions related to hearing loss, this work covers 435. As before, the authors first discuss isolated hereditary hearing loss and then present hearing loss syndromes such as those involving the nervous system, eye, external ear and musculoskeletal system. The discussions are authoritative, practical and well-illustrated, and those of the most important syndromes are very detailed. Introductory chapters deal with the history of the field, clinical approach, embryology of the ear, tooth anomalies and hearing loss, and related endocrine and metabolic disorders. 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book.
This is a nice overview of urology. The chapters are a quick read and well put together. This is a good intro to the diagnosis, and treatment of urologic diseases. While this is a good book for people at all levels of medical education, I think it is best for upper level medical students and interns.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not a best book to read
Compare the costs paid and benefits gained from reading, I am sure that there are other books better than this. Most contents in this book were described in very long sentences, although they actually need only 30% of all words. Some good points are to the pictures illustrated in some chapters. My recommendation to those with limited paying capacity, you should buy Heineken's book instead. Trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Text
When it comes to textbooks, the section I usually use most often is the index so I don't have to plod through pages of material to find the information I need. This is one of the few textbooks I've ever read cover to cover and actually enjoyed. The text is very readable with many examples to demonstrate the concepts discussed. There are also plenty of illustrations and charts to reinforce the information. Also, this isn't just one more book taking up space on my bookshelf -- I still use it as a reference to clarify questions that come up.Epidemiology is a clearly written, methodologically presented introduction to the most important concepts in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Thorough
Within a short time of receiving this book, I found a number of very helpful references that contributed useful information to a doctoral research paper. The book is written well and offers easy access to specific epidemiological issues via the detailed index at the back.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best beginning epidemiology text
This is the best beginning text on epidemiology available--no other text comes close. The writing is clear and concise, a rare event in science texts. The style, content and layout are extraordinary. Dr. Gordis creates friendly understandable explanations from potentially confusing topics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goal Achieved!
A Case Manager's Study Guide: Preparing for Certification works well for the motivated self learner. The information contained in the book is thorough and concise. I felt prepared for the test after I completed my studies. The test questions, with the added benefit of having them on a CD-ROM, provide the learner with an excellent opportunity to prepare for the certification test environment, especially if you have test anxiety! I just received notice that I met the qualifications and passed the examination to be qualified as a Certified Case Manager(CCM).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Concise Review for the CCM examination
The Case Manager's Study Guide with CD-ROM was the only reference book I used to prepare for the CCM exam. It is a very informative and concise manual which, unlike many books on the subject of Case Management currently on the market, is very easy to read and understand. The CD-ROM was especially helpful in preparing for the certification exam. And, I passed the examination with flying colors! Even now, I keep the manual in the office to use as a reference guide when I need clarification on certain issues.

Book Description

Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's HEAL YOUR HEADACHE puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program: Step 1: Avoid the "Quick Fix." Too often painkillers only make matters worse because of the crippling complication known as rebound. Step 2: Reduce Your Triggers. The crux of the program: a migraine diet that eliminates the foods that push headache sufferers over the top. Step 3: Raise Your Threshold. When diet and other lifestyle changes aren't enough, preventive medication can help stay the course.

That's it: in three steps turn your headache problems around. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Headache Relief!!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers with migraine headaches occasionally or constantly and to anyone who has a loved one that suffers with migraine headaches.

I had headache discomfort ranging from irritating to excruciating everyday for four months. I saw my primary care doctor; his partner, several ER doctors and two neurologists and none of them could help very much in my constant struggle. After spending 3 ½ months on constant narcotics (the wrong thing to do) and 3 days in the hospital with little relief, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

A friend of mine researched doctors specializing in migraine headaches and found Dr. Buchholz. Of course it is a six-month waiting list to get into his office and I decided to read his book in the meantime. I will admit, I read it with much skepticism. I figured I would follow his guidelines and then when I had my appointment I would say, "I followed this advice and it did not work. Now What?" Instead, I found that his 3-step program was just what I needed. 7 months later, I have very few headaches and they go away with simple Tylenol.

I strongly recommend that the migraine sufferer and those close to them read this book and stick to its advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Anyone with Migraine Symptoms
David Buchholz condenses approximately 40,000 hours of clinical practice with headache suffers at one of the best teaching hospitals in the world, Johns Hopkins Hospitals, into a book that can, in less that 40 hours, transform your life. This book is the best information available if you suffer from headaches and other related facial, eye, ear, and balance problems that keep you from enjoying your life. That is my own experience. It worked for me. It can work for you if you want to take control of your migraine symptoms.

The book is not to be read once, but read again, and again, thought about, and studied. The book describes Buchholz's program for preventing migraine symptoms, but the process he describes is just as important for achieving results. That process discusses how to take control of your own treatment, working along side your treating physician rather than acting as the passive patient complaining of symptoms that the doctor is supposed to make go away. That is what took the time for me working with Dr. Buchholz's book. I had to teach myself a new way of interacting with my doctors where I took responsibility for my own symptoms and the outcomes of treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars belief in life after migraines
if you still believe in miracles, Santa Claus, the basic goodness of people, and physicians who can be "user friendly", you have to buy this book!

it's written as if the author were a member of your own family, he speaks to OUR level, not more and for once, not less. He anticipates your very next question or response, almost to the point of having a "sixth sense". The book can change your life, but only if you're willing to make the effort to take the first step. He can chase the monsters away, and renew your belief in miracles, Santa, pain-free days and the hope of a brand new tomorrow. Your life can be changed and saved for yourself, and your loved ones. I cannot express it more highly than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get back your life
I have suffered from migraines most of my life. Over the past six years they have become much more frequent and severe. I have tried every natural remedy and prevention I could find. Finally I saw a neurologist who prescribed one of the new migraine medications. I began taking them 2x week. My headaches became more frequent over a four year period as many as 3-5 times a week. Then I found Dr. David Buchholz's book, "Heal Your Headache, The 1-2-3 Program." I stopped taking the prescription drugs, began a headache diet he outlines. I have my life back !! I can not tell you what a remarkable difference this program has made in my life !!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for my mom after over 30 years of other methods!!!
I bought this book for my mom. It is an easy read and the solutions offered very easy to follow. All it takes is someone that is willing. She was very willing after having headaches all of her adult life with nothing that worked. She read it and began following the steps completely...six months later her headaches have dramatically improved! Our sincerest thanks to Dr. David Buchholz. ... Read more
