Book Description

"This is a useful text for the seasoned practitioner seeking a greater understanding of nursing philosophies. If other volumes in the series also summarize the contributions of key theorists and/or present the basis of nursing theory, the rationale for gaining an understanding of the professional theories, and the relationship of the theories to practice, the series as a whole would be very beneficial to the student nurse and the practitioner in professional nursing."

--Health Values

"This book presents in detail 12 leading nursing theories. Complex material is presented in interesting ways, usually contextualized within both the theorist’s background and related theoretical material. With allegiant reference to the original works of the theorists, the book informs with a forthright presentation that is concise, substantive, and thorough. . . . This is a commendably useful and usable presentation of nursing theory. It condenses the most relevant aspects of each theoretical approach, related research, and clinical and nonclinical applications. Often with pithy conciseness, it helps fill a need for ready access to diverse and complex material."

--Doody’s Nursing and Allied Health Book Review

Addressing many of the primary conceptual frameworks and theories in nursing, Foundations of Nursing Theory offers concise, informative descriptions of nursing’s philosophical origins. This compilation of works from the acclaimed series Notes on Nursing Theories not only covers the development, assumptions, and broad applications of each doctrine but provides specific examples of how it pertains to both practice and research. In addition, each of the 12 chapters concludes with a glossary of terms and a bibliography of the classic works, critiques, and research related to that theory and its author.

Invaluable to both students and professionals, this encompassing volume will foster a greater understanding--and utilization--of these essential nursing philosophies.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd edition
I found Carolyn Buppert's second edition of Business Practice and Legal Guide to be very helpful. The additional chapters are useful for my practice and for research on a state wide level. I would recommend this book to nurse practitioners and students of the profession. It is proving to be a valuable resource for improving NP practice in Alabama. Be sure to get the second edition (2003/2004)as the first was published in 1995.

1-0 out of 5 stars Information is outdated
As a grad student interested in starting my own practice upon graduation, I found this book to be useless. It has been reprinted by another publishing company and its original copyright date is 1999. Between then and now - 2004 - a lot of things have changed. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who requires current information should look elsewhere. This is a very expensive book as is not helpful at all!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for any nurse practitioner
I had the pleasure of reading this book while finishing my last year in nurse practitioner school.

Ms. Buppert is a master in defining how to negotiate business contracts.

I met the author at a nurse practioner conference in Nashville Tn and she was very down to earth and truly magnificent in her knowledge of laws affecting nurse practioners.

I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, helpful
This book is a great way to access state-by-state information related to NP practice. I do recommend that readers not solely rely on its information. They should still contact each state's board of nursing. I found discrepancies between Ms. Buppert's requirements for practice in Ohio and actual law.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to both NP students and clinicians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Theory Construction
As a beginning researcher in medicine, I was quite surprised to find that medicine is considered an atheoretical science. Perhaps I missed a few classes along the way, but as a family physician, I thought I understood theory and theory development. That was until I really started thinking about it. After asking several researchers, mentors, and general queries to other physicians about theory development, I was left with the following: "This is very, very important, but I can't tell you how to start."

Strategies for Theory Construction in Nursing is a well written, easy to read book that gives a basic underpinning to theory development. It is the first book on this topic that I could easily understand. Concepts, statements and theories are developed through analysis, synthesis and derivation. This book, with examples, offers a step-by-step approach to development. It is well worth your time. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but...
I quickly grew tired with the author's leftist political views, which she felt compelled to insert in nearly every chapter. And unions? She's all for them, and doesn't seem to understand that there are those that want nothing to do with them. Also, she completely negates those with ASN nursing degrees, relagating them to being slightly above NA's on the nursing food chain. No mention of LPN's at all.

Which is disappointing, since I am enrolled in an LPN program, with a goal of becoming a PRN - the care I received at two Spokane hospitals (during the birth of my children) was the turning point of my interest in nursing.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for those thinking about nursing
This book was great reading material. I've already made up my mind to become a nurse. The book is directed to those who are considering a career in nursing. However, I enjoyed reading it just the same and the ideas presented reinforced my commitment to nursing.

One interesting point is that Janet Katz drives home the need for leadership within nursing and how nursing can be as versatile as you want it to be. This really helped me because I now realize how I can make nursing fit in my life.

One captivating chapter is named "You don't have to like blood to be a nurse" or something like that. For a brief moment, I thought that not liking blood would be detrimental to my nursing career. In her book, Janet demonstrates why this doesn't have to be the case.

Another point covered is a comparison of associate's, diploma and BSN programs and Janet does a good job doing this. She also describes education beyond the RN degree which opened up my mind to countless possibilities. I read it in a day!

5-0 out of 5 stars Majoring in Nursing
An excellent book for anyone looking into a nurisng career. Very informative and easy to read. Ms. Katz works hard to give her readers an accurate description of the profession.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Information Source
Majoring in Nursing helped me with deciding the steps to take to see if nursing would be a good career for me. I am currently trying to decide if I should change careers and the book covers nursing as a second career and the advantages and disadvantages to starting nursing at an older age. It also discusses steps to take before putting in all the time on a degree (such as volunteer work) to see if nursing is the kind of job you thought it would be. Details of the different educational paths to an RN are clearly discussed as well as the various types of jobs available in nursing and of course the many problems (insurance, etc).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview For Career Research
This book is great for those considering nursing as a career. It gives an overview of many aspects of the profession from school requirements to dealing with problems. The best part of the book is the appendix which contains references to books and organizations. ... Read more

In today's era of high-technology medicine, Suzanne Gordon, editor of books such as Caregiving: Readings in Knowledge, Practice, Ethics, and Politics, brings us the story of three nurses who work to humanize the experience of receiving medical care. We meet Nancy Rumplik, an outpatient nurse in an ambulatory clinic, as she prevents a nearly fatal allergic reaction to a course of chemotherapy. We meet nurse practitioner Ellen Kitchen, who provides home care to an 88-year-old man who does not want surgery for his prostate cancer. And we meet Jeannie Chaisson, a medical clinical nurse specialist, whose work continues after her shift ends as she helps a husband and daughter come to terms with a loved one's desire to stop treatment and succumb to death. Through their accounts Gordon tells us much about the health care system and about the nursing attention that allows people to tolerate the painful treatments and difficult choices that accompany high-technology medicine.

While Life Support draws attention to the often invisible work of nurses, it also highlights their plight in a health care system that increasingly focuses on the bottom line. Gordon painstakingly makes the point that it is not just surgery, ventilators, and dialysis machines that offer life support in the health care system. She shows how these nurses create an environment in which high-technology medicine can thrive, but that is not devoid of human care and concern. We learn how experienced nurses teach their colleagues, smooth over insensitive treatment by doctors, tend to illness, and bring dignity to death when treatment no longer works--all of which are roles that could not necessarily be filled by lower-paid, less-experienced personnel. In chronicling the work of Rumplik, Kitchen, and Chaisson, Gordon brings a story of the soul of America's health care system. --Amy Sessler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Summarizes nursing's role in the current health care arena.
A must read for all those working IN or WITH the profession of nursing. Gordon discusses how the changes in our health care system have affected both the nurses role and quality patient care issues. The essential need for collaboration of all health care personnel is woven throughout the content. I required this book for a senior nursing course I just taught at Wayne State University in Detroit and the students were most impressed with the book and its approach to nursing, medicine and health care. A must read for nurses, physicians, hospital administration, potential students and the general public. Afterall, we are all potential patients and we should be aware of what is happening to the largest population of health care providers, the nurses!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for all health care consumers .
The most under rated people in our society are nurses, this is an introduction to the ever present caregivers in healthcare today. The most varied role and most significant in all aspects of health care is the nurse. This was a wonderful read for all of those who may ever be the receiver of any aspect of their care from nurses in our country, basically everyone,a must have. For those considering the profession as a career, and the family members who would like an overview of "all in a days work", this will invoke serious thought.Yes, I am a nurse and for me to recommend a book written on nursing....kudos to all involved in the creation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for EVERYONE
I've been a nurse for several years, and I got the book on recommendation from another nurse friend of mine. I was, and continue to be, amazed at the power of this book. It highlighted in stark words and numbers, problems facing health care today, while at the same time brightening the work with the all too human touch of nurses, patients and doctors. Once you read this book, you will understand why legislation such as The Patient Safety Act came to be, and why it is needed. It describes why nursing is so necessary, why even bathing or feeding a patient are not always within the realm of tasks to be assigned to unlicensed personnel. I urge everyone to read this book, and be touched by Gordon's powerful writing. Diana Katseyeanis, RN

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for anyone who cares about health care
"I work with nurses every day but it took Suzanne Gordon to open my eyes to see all they do and how important-and under-appreciated-their work is. She shows the folly of the current trend toward de-emphasizing the skilled, multifaceted caregiving of registered nurses. Life Support should be required reading for all doctors, health policy decision-makers and anyone else who cares about the future of our healthcare system. It's well-written, moving and vitally important." -Timothy McCall, M.D., Author of Examining Your Doctor

5-0 out of 5 stars Physician Recommends Life Support for Peers & Patients
This is a very moving and important book, which should be required reading for all medical students and doctors. Ms. Gordon who spent three years following three extra-ordinary nurses learned (and in the book presents) more knowledge and insights about sickness, pain, caring, and the health care system than my medicial residents learn during their three year (internal medicine) residency. Each of the three nurses covers a different part of the health care map (oncology chemotherapy nurse, home health nurse, and inpatient nurse) and illustrates the critical and often invisible role nurses play in health care. What the book does so ably is to highlight these special caring roles, and then place them in the context of what is happening in the U.S. health care system today. Ms. Gordon, an advocate for universal health insurance and consumer accoutablity starkly contrasts the bright light these and thousands of other of the quiet heros in nursing, with the dark side of market driven health care that threatens these values and heroism. If for nothing else, the book is worth reading for a useful and interesting history of the practice of nursing, which is interwoven with the stories of these three nurses. Nurses are the essence of quality and this book is a high quality look at their important and endangered role. Book Description

We are on the verge of the nation’s worst nursing shortage in history. Dedicated nurses are leaving hospitals in droves, and there are not enough new recruits to the profession to meet demand. Even hospitals that were once very highly regarded for the quality of their nursing care, such as Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, now struggle to fill vacant positions. What happened? Dana Beth Weinberg argues that hospital restructuring in the 1990s is to blame.

In their attempts to retain profit margins or even just to stay afloat, hospitals adopted a common set of practices to cut costs and increase revenues. Many strategies squeezed greater productivity out of nurses and other hospital workers. Nurses’ workloads increased to the point that even the most skilled nurses questioned whether they could provide minimal, safe care to patients. As hospitals hemorrhaged money, it seemed that no one—not hospital administrators, not doctors—felt they could afford to listen to nurses.

Through a careful look at the effects of the restructuring strategies chosen and implemented by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the author examines management’s efforts to balance service and survival. By showing the effects of hospital restructuring on nurses’ ability to plan, evaluate, and deliver excellent care, Weinberg provides a stinging indictment of standard industry practices that underestimate the contribution nurses make both to hospitals and to patient care. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Code Green: Money-Driven Hospitals and the Dismantling of Nu
Weinberg (Brandeis Univ.) provides an incredible account of her observations of the state of nursing at the newly merged Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center. Her goal was "to find out why the nurses are crying." Each chapter thoroughly examines current issues faced by the professional nursing staff as seen through their eyes. These issues are similar to those faced by nurses nationally as financial goals take precedence to quality patient care. Issues that Weinberg examines include a shift from primary nursing to team nursing, replacement of licensed personnel with nonlicensed technicians, overwhelming workloads, increasing nursing shortage, restructuring of nursing leadership, lack of administrative support, and deterioration of the physician-nurse relationship. Dialogue from focus groups provides a revealing account of how frustrated nurses were at this institution. Hospital administration often interpreted complaints from nurses as simply an effort to resist change. Weinberg also presents data indicating how ineffective these changes were at reducing financial debt, and the detrimental impact they have had on nursing care. An excellent account of challenges faced by nurses today. ... Read more
