4-0 out of 5 stars good book for phelbotomy students
I think this is a pretty good book for phelbotomy students. The book goes into great depth about various blood tests and the equipment used. The language used was simple enough for laypersons to understand. This book also prepares you for the National exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am not a medical professional, terrific book!
As a layperson who wants to help people type thier blood with home blood typing kits, but be responsible about disposal, this books is a gem of information. The surprise for me is how much marvelous information is contaianed beyond responsible bloodletting. This book contains some anatomy, and describes the body systems. I would like to take a course on this subject, but they are available only to students of nursing, etc. With free shipping, and Amazon.com convenience and availibility, you can't beat this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very useful
my professor recommended this book to the class. though this book refers to human urinalysis, it is helpful to us veterinary students. there is little differnce between animal and human urinalysis, and there are no veterinary urinalysis books on the market

5-0 out of 5 stars photographs are clear and helpful in my work.
Iam a student of medical technology presently doing my clinical practicum at a local hospital. the first time i sam this book was by my instructor who uses it extensively as a reference book. It is also used at the hospital where i am doing my internship and is presently helping me as i explore the different variety of microscopic sediment and substence. The book is complete and offers additional reference illustrations the is esential in the diagnosing of urinary conditons. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not for Mac users!
I purchased this book mainly for the CD test. Too bad for me that nowhere in the reviews does it mention that it can't be used in a Mac! I don't really care for the format of the questions, either - I've purchased much better review guides; especially the CLS Review by Harr (of course, you can't use it's floppy in a Mac, either - that's why I wasted my money on another book) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars clinical lab scientist
good source of information,helps alot in taking the board exam for clinical lab scientist,it's a must to have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Review Book....But No CD-ROM :(
This is a really great book to review for the Registry. There are well over 1000+ questions in this book. It covers the seven majors areas of Clinical Science. Those areas are Hematology, Immunology, Immunohematology, Clinical Chemistry, Body Fluids, and Microbiology. The thing I found really neat about this book was that it gave detailed explanations at the end of each review section. So you got the opportunity to learn a little something extra even if you did got the question right.

My only complaint about this book is the disk. I could'nt use it because I have a CD-ROM drive. Don't they know that the majority of computers that are coming out today have CD-ROM drives? I hope that the latest version of this book comes with a CD-ROM....because disks are just so late 20th century! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Laboratory Science Review
This is a great book for review purposes. It covered each topic completely. The only thing I was disappointed in was the disk that came with it. It was 100 questions and didn't give you the answers till you completed the enire thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Laboratory Science
I think this is an excellent resource for MLS majors. The expinations given with the answers help in understanding any cloudy areas within the subject of the questions. I was a bit disappointed in the CD. I was hoping it would be more like the book in giving explinations for questions, but it only provides a 100 question mock exam. Don't get me wrong, this was definately worth the price paid for such a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and preparation guide for Registry !
I just finished my MLT program this year. I purchased this guide in preparation for my national registry exam this summer. The format was easy to follow with its answers and explanations for those answers. After reviewing this material, I feel more prepared to PASS registry. 5-0 out of 5 stars An essential introduction to nursing informatics
The third and latest edition of Saba and McCormick's text is almost completely unrecognisable to those familiar with the second edition, published only five years previously, and perhaps rightly so. This reflects, at least in part, the advances within nursing informatics over that time, one aspect of which is the increasing difficulty of any one or two individuals being able to cover, with the necessary degree of detail and expertise, all of the field. If any two people could cover the whole of the field, it is probably the editors of this volume, but they have adopted a sensible and pragmatic approach and brought in additional contributors to provide address many of the specialist subsets within the domain that is nursing informatics.

With over 500 pages, and 46 contributing authors, the contents page reads like a veritable who's who of nursing informatics, or at least, of US interpretations of nursing informatics. The book does, however, as befits the international involvement of the editors, draw on expertise from around the world, and includes contributions from all parts of the world, particularly in addressing the international perspectives.

The book is divided into 11 sections, and begins with an overview of the development of nurses' use of computers and of nursing informatics. It then covers informatics theory, practice, administrative, research and educational applications, as well as some of the international perspectives and emerging areas such as consumer health informatics.

I would recommend this book to all who have an interest in nursing informatics. It provides a valuable introduction to the field as a whole, and to specific applications, and good references to further reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Personal or Professional Library
Computers have revolutionized the workplace in many industries. However, healthcare is just beginning to grapple with the many opportunities that integrated computer systems can provide. With the quickening pace of computer innovation, many clinical healthcare workers cannot and do not have the time to sift through all the various aspects of how computers and medicine interact. Essentials of Computers for Nurses provides a strong foundation for busy professionals, researchers, and administrators in health care organizaitons. I found the book fascinating with each individual contributing author having insightful comments valuable information in their area of expertise. The overview of how medical informatics is used throughout the world was particulary helpful where we are and where we are going. The last chapter was especially welcome and has enhanced my view of how computers will impact the every day delivery of healthcare. Overall, Essentials of Computers for Nurses is an excellent book and should be a part of a professional library for not only nurses but also informatics specialists throughout the healthcare industry. ... When I first saw this book I got scared because of the size and weight of it, but when I finally got the courage to open it and start reading it, it surprised me! I found this book to be really good and the pictures are great and help out a lot. The case studies at the end of each chapter are really great and got me to understand more and think about the content of the chapter, which by doing that helped me to remember!! Also the last part of the book: Laboratory methods, was a great help to me both in preparing for class and when it came to writing the report, the book tells you step by step how the procedures are done. I will always keep this book for reference as I know it will help in during my career as a lab technongist. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars very small book
A useful book but at times will leave you wondering -- paid a stupid expensive price for the one at the campus bookstore ($70) but for the price of this the same content is present in the Dana Oakes book on mechanical ventilation, and more.

If you're not actually planning on spinning the knobs on the ventilator, it's not a bad little book, but if you're more involved in the upkeep of the machine, it'll leave you wanting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rapid interpretations of Ventilator Waveforms
A must for the general internist seeking a better understanding of mechanical ventilation or anyone new to the critical care field. This along, with "Guide to Mechanical Ventilation and Intensive Respiratory Care" by Pierce, is a great, and painless, way to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent little book jammed packed with information!
"Rapid Interpretation of Ventilator Waveforms" is a 132 page introductory text on ventilator waveforms by three well known professors from Georgia State University, Jonathan Waugh, Vijay Deshpande, and Robert Harwood. They have put together a systematic presentation of waveform analysis starting from simple flow, pressure, and volume changes all the way to flow volume loops and troubleshooting problems in the clinical setting. This is an excellent little book jammed packed with information that can be carried around in your lab coat when doing clinicals or when analyzing ventilator waveforms on the job. The book has hundreds of waveform examples with clear and easy to understand explanations. This is one of the few complete books available on ventilator waveform analysis and at only $29.00 it is definitely a must have book! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, questionable printing quality
Good explanation of traditional work measurement techniques and does discuss their application to support the "trendy" lean manufacturing techniques. As such, will help practioners of lean techniques to use a sound engineered/quantified approach. At times, seems like a commercial for author's consulting business. Page paper quality, photocopy pictures and illustrations are not professional quality. Price is questionable given printing quality.

3-0 out of 5 stars Motion & Time Study for FAT Manufacturing
Although this book has valuable information regarding traditional time and motion techniques, it does a poor job of addressing the lean manufacturing aspect. In today's dynamic manufacturing environment, the Industrial Engineer is forever pressed to increase throughput and reduce inventories rather than study time standards in infinite detail. Given these constraints, the fusion of more contemporary lean manufacturing techniques with traditional time and motion studies was severely lacking in this textbook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Manufacturing revolution

4-0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, Useful Handbook
Biomedical applications of light are expanding dynamically. This handbook does a good job of organizing a mass of information on dozens of cutting-edge technologies. The articles by leading experts are aimed at professionals but do not, in most cases, require specialized knowledge to understand. The clear graphics appropriately support the text, while the chapter bibliographies are extensive.
So this handbook can be recommended to any scientist, medical doctor, engineer, or graduate student in this or related fields.
However, this book suffers from certain flaws that it shares with many other English-language books in this field. Scientists in Russia and other East European countries are very competitive in certain areas of biomedical photonics. They lead the world in the centrally important field of low-intensity laser therapy (LILT). Yet the book's discussion of biophotonics and its almost totally monoglot bibliographies do not come close to incorporating their findings.
Even the sole article on LILT states that it will not discuss whole body responses to this therapy. Why not? They are very relevant in a handbook of this sort.
What's more, this article omits any mention of Biophotonic Therapy (Photoluminescence, Quantum Hemotherapy), the treatment of the blood with a low-intensity laser via an intravenous waveguide or, in extracorporeal mode, with UV and visible light. The reader would never learn from this handbook that thousands of practitioners throughout the world use Biophotonic Therapy every day for a wide range of indications. The mechanisms of BT are well characterized, and more than 400 scientific articles and a dozen books are devoted to BT's clinical track record.
These are unfortunate omissions in an otherwise admirable handbook. ... Read more

Book Description

An authoritative assessment of the problems and applications of biomedical signals, rooted in practical case studies
The development of techniques to analyze biomedical signals, such as electro-cardiograms, has dramatically affected countless lives by making possible improved noninvasive diagnosis, online monitoring of critically ill patients, and rehabilitation and sensory aids for the handicapped. Rangaraj Rangayyan supplies a practical, hands-on field guide to this constantly evolving technology in Biomedical Signal Analysis, focusing on the diagnostic challenges that medical professionals continue to face. Dr. Rangayyan applies a problem-solving approach to his study. Each chapter begins with the statement of a different biomedical signal problem, followed by a selection of real-life case studies and the associated signals. Signal processing, modeling, or analysis techniques are then presented, starting with relatively simple "textbook" methods, followed by more sophisticated research approaches. The chapter concludes with one or more application solutions; illustrations of real-life biomedical signals and their derivatives are included throughout. Among the topics addressed are:
* Concurrent, coupled, and correlated processes
* Filtering for removal of artifacts
* Event detection and characterization
* Frequency-domain characterization
* Modeling biomedical systems
* Analysis of nonstationary signals
* Pattern classification and diagnostic decision
The chapters also present a number of laboratory exercises, study questions, and problems to facilitate preparation for class examinations and practical applications. Biomedical Signal Analysis provides a definitive resource for upper-level under-graduate and graduate engineering students, as well as for practicing engineers, computer scientists, information technologists, medical physicists, and data processing specialists.
