For a comprehensive guide on just such hygiene, look no further than Linda Berry's _Internal Cleaning_. A chiropractor and clinical nutritionist, Ms. Berry has over 25 years experience in the practice of cleansing/detoxification, and a fast perusal of the topics covered and the clear, concise writing style show that she really knows what's up in the nether regions. Berry begins with a section detailing the myriad toxins that we ingest on a day-to-day basis, some knowingly, others not: from obvious culprits like MSG flavoring and hydronized oils, to all those mysterious additives intended on extending the shelf-life; from animal steroids in the bulk of beef to the minerals and metals lurking in that clear glass of water; Berry details an astonishing amount of chemicals and carcinogenics that most probably have a detrimental effect on our health and happiness. This section contains a breakdown of how the digestive system works, explaining what substances pass through easily and what clogs up the pipes. Also included: environmental toxins, household toxins, pesticides and plastics, hormones and drugs. After a simple test designed to find out the individual's current level of stress, Berry outlines a variety of cleansing programs, from simple juice fasts to powder-supplements targeting certain organs (liver, kidneys, lymph etc). A long discourse on diet comes next, complete with a guide of healthy alternative recipes. Berry completes the book with a section on practices that compliment these diet/cleansing techniques; an essential conclusion, but I wish she had gone in more detail about the importance of mastication, exercise, and positive thinking. An important book for anyone concerned with keeping the body healthy & whole.
The first part of the book could have been a more informed overview, thus more understandable for people not attuned to the aspects of inner cleansing. My biggest problem with this book, and it is a very big one, is that it recommends a few company's products, which are not necessarily the best on the market. Some are powdered nutrients that aren't totally accessible to constipated systems and some are fiber capsules that can be self defeating, even harmful for some people. The formulas suggested from different companies and Multi-level Marketing organizations, are not balanced, and throw together herbs for different body systems ( we can't just throw together some wonderful herbs and expect them to work in a balanced manner for that specific body system, which just confuses the body's natural cleansing function), laxative or stimulating herbs (which should never be taken for any length of time), and not relating to consumers that need to effectively and safely cleanse the body. We must gently, but totally cleanse each body system (or organ) separately. Other than 'the fiber capsules', the colon cleansing recommendations is adequate, but the information and products on the other organs or problems (liver, kidneys, arteries, lungs, parasites) is not up to date or very informative. If this book was more objective (without selling products), it would be much more credible. ... Read more

Book Description is highly recommended for those studying to be board certified by the American Naturopathic Medical Certification and Accreditation Board. has been adopted as a text book by several naturopathic schools. includes works by J.H. Kellogg, M.V. Kulkarni, Royal Lee, G.J. Drews, J.H. Tilden and other early naturopathic pioneers. explains what modalities are used by naturopaths. answer the questions, "Why do people get sick?", "What is the cause of disease?" and "How do people get well?" Reviews (1)
Dr. Thiel is well-qualified to author such a book. In addition to his Ph.D. in Nutrition Science from the Union Institute and his doctor of Naturopathy from the International College of Naturopathy, Dr. Thiel is current president of the California State Naturopathic Medical Association. Thiel has also had a number of papers published in various alternative medical journals (including the Townsend Letter) and currently has a paper in press with the prestigious British journal Medical Hypotheses. The book begins with an overview and definition of just what naturopathy is. Drawing from the writings of Drs. Bendict Lust and John Schnell, as well as the defining Congressional Act of 1931, Thiel presents naturopathy as a drugless, non-invasive, non-surgical, non-medical discipline that should only use natural interventions to correct bodily and mental imbalances. In chapter two, titled "Naturopathic Philosophy," Thiel draws from early naturopathic writings to demonstrate the basic foundations of the art: Premum no nocere ("First, do no harm"), Vis medcatrix naturae ("the healing power of nature"), and Tolle causum ("all causes," or what makes people get sick). Peculiar to this chapter is the presentation of the nine naturopathic standards adopted by the profession at the Golden Jubilee meeting in 1947. Something Thiel repeatedly draws attention to in this chapter is the importance of approaching the person in their totality and not just their symptoms. Thiel accurately points out that alternative therapists sometimes commit the same error of allopaths: they treat the disease and not the patient. Proper attention to correcting the causes of disease are paramount to the naturopathic approach to health. What makes this book unique is the effective and thorough "round-up" of early writings on a variety of naturopathic modalities such as heliotherapy, hydrotherapy, herbalism, homeopathy, massage, exercise, rest and sleep, fasting, etc. Thiel has done an outstanding job of finding and organizing assorted excerpts from the profession's founders to define what those modalities are and what their possibilities are in helping others. Thiel then makes conclusions as to how these modalities are still effective today, often reporting on recent studies or research that validate naturopathic techniques. Most striking, however, is Thiel's stance on synthetic and natural vitamins and minerals. Citing the Golden Jubilee's Standards of 1947, Thiel argues that synthetic supplements have no place in naturopathic practice and devotes considerable space in the book to demonstrating that natural, food-complexed nutrients are superior to synthetic ones. Several of Thiel's published papers on fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other subjects fill out the book's appendices. Thiel concludes the book with a warning to the naturopathic profession: "If naturopaths embrace allopathic medications as part of their modalities, not only will they betray their naturopathic foundation, they will cease to be naturopaths. Naturopaths who prescribe medications are telling their clients that they do not feel they can be helped through naturopathic methods. Naturopaths who routinely prescribe medicines are not, in my opinion, being true to this profession." In these days where some naturopaths feel that they should have the legal right to dispense drugs as allopaths do, Thiel's words are quite pertinent and should be heeded. Naturopathy for the 21st Century should be required reading of all present and future Nds, as well as the lay public who are interested in natural health. In its masterful combining of old and current writings and research on the art and science of naturopathy, the book offers readers invaluable insights into the healing power of nature. ... Book Description Food is the original medicine. Food is the best medicine. From Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, acclaimed author of the national bestseller Meditation as Medicine, comes Food as Medicine -- a remarkable book that balances both of Dr. Khalsa's specialties by advising readers on how to achieve maximum health from simply eating responsibly and well. Grounded in medical science, Food as Medicine is a pragmatic and accessible reference for anyone seeking guidance on healthy eating or simple food remedies. Dr. Khalsa begins by setting readers on the right nutritional path -- regardless of their current eating habits -- and explains how to go organic, how to use natural organic juices and foods as medicine, and how special-food diets can help reverse the progress or diminish the symptoms of certain diseases, such as Alzheimer's or Hepatitis C. The book is filled with interesting food facts: Blueberries can increase brain longevity through their ability to help release dopamine in the brain. Kiwi fruit, because of its high levels of disease-fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients, is said to be an excellent source in battling cancer and heart disease. Pears, with their high content of certain minerals and fibers, can help prevent fibroid tumors. Drawing on Dr. Khalsa's own life experience as well as patient case histories, Food as Medicine outlines the seven principles of "The Khalsa Plan," details information on his other nutritional plans designed to target specific ailments, and lays out dozens of delicious, time-tested recipes that promote overall health and well-being. Reviews (4)
FOOD AS MEDICINE is a must-read for all, particularly those who dislike fruits and/or vegetables but want to be healthy and prevent diseases because the doctor explains clearly and succinctly what each food can do for your body. He also has a chapter about each common illness and what he recommends eating to overcome the illness. He reminds us that by cutting down on total calories consumed while eating nutritionally dense food, we can increase our life span by as much as thirty percent. My favorite part is the valuable information about each food (chapter 5) as well as the anti-aging in chapter 18. I've eaten blueberries every day since I've read this book because "blueberrries contain the highest antioxidant capability...comes from a class of flavonoids called anthocyanins...blueberries protect against brain aging, heart disease and cancer. The most astounding aspect of research on blueberries has been in the area of brain longevity." Soar into healthy eating! Just adding one fruit or vegetable a day is a good habit to start. Do it!

All I can say is - "meh". Not really the pinnacle of human achievement, unstructured, and they all say the same! I chose to write a review of this one because I felt it contained the most valuable information (breathing!). PROTIP: Go to http://www.bragg.com/ where you can purchase their books for about $4 as instantly downloadable pdf-files. Just get one and see how you feel about it. Rated 5 Stars to lure others in and also because at least one of these books are really must-reads, if only for the entertainment factor.
Do not be confused by the low price on this book. Health Science prints in such large quantities, they can afford to keep their prices low. This is a very popular book. Sixteenth printing, now enlarged and revised. Paul Bragg started the health food movement over eighty years ago. His Daughter, the Amazing Patricia Bragg, is accelerating their tradition of promoting the healthy lifestyle. She publishes a number of health-nutrition books and markets her own brand of apple cider vinegar, olive oil and aminos. See her picture on the bottles. I have known Health Science and Patricia Bragg and have followed her healthy lifestyle program for over 20 years. As the author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I highly recommend Health Science books to anyone not tired of living. Book Description Now, let's imagine that you too are a spiritual being -- which you are! -- what would you feed yourself?" --from If the Buddha Came to Dinner Many people don't realize that the simple daily act of eating can be a profound catalyst for spiritual growth, from experiencing a renewed sense of vitality to living a richer and more satisfying life. That's because each time we eat we have the opportunity to pay attention, care for ourselves, and feed the real source of our hunger: our spirit. Nourishment isn't a fad diet but a lifelong journey, and Hale Sofia Schatz is the ideal guide. Gentle, wise, and humorous, she shows us how to feed our Buddha within. A perfect blend of inspirational guidance and practical suggestions, If the Buddha Came to Dinner includes guidelines for selecting vital foods, tips for keeping your energy balanced throughout the day, a cleansing program, and recipes to awaken your palate. Reviews (6)
The book takes you through a very manageable cleanse with many great healthy happy and delicious recipes. Looking at food in this manner has guided me to more clarity, energy, focus, and curiosity in ways to eat refreshingly. I am grateful to Hale for pointing out a simple and fun way to understand the importance of to whom we feed and how we feed it. This has shown us a way to access a stronger and vivid connection just by looking into what we eat to make us thrive. I hope there will be more books by this author to come.
She gives specific suggestions without pushing the line into dogma. She knows the subtlety of her subject, and she approaches it with a gentle, graceful, but sure hand. I am greatly inspired by her chapter on Transformational Nourishment. Even the title says it all. We stand with our arms outstretched, reaching for the horizon yet it comes down to the simple day-to-day act of feeding our bodies, hearts, minds and souls. I have had years of experience trying different diets and I am pleased to say that this book takes all that I know to be true and puts it in clear, useful and inspirational form. It is subtle: you feed yourself in everything you do and think and say and feel. Each breath you take provides further nourishment. Now, which aspect of yourself do you choose to feed, to support, to give life to? I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a realization.

Dr. Fulton really makes the reader consider Osteopathy as a medical alternative.
This book is interwoven with touching stories of patients he's helped throughout his practice. As he aged, he found that he could only work with an increasingly younger population, as those patients fed his energy. Whereas adults seemed to be so entangled in their own web of stress and disease, that they seemed to zap his energy as he tried to treat them with his hands. The book ends with a call to live healthier, more meaningful lives. I recommend this book for everyone, but particularly for osteopathic medical school applicants and their M.D. counterparts. It gives a good narrative explanation of the philosophical expectations of osteopathic medicine. But as a strong believer in osteopathic medicine, and as a future osteopathic medical student, I believe this book poignantly elicits the direction in which medical care should be heading.
Dr. Fulford truly lived and breathed what he taught...he was for real. My father was an M.D. in Indianapolis, IN and met Bob Fulford in, I believe, Cleveland, in the early 1950s at an organic food meeting. Their lifelong friendship was forged at that time and lasted until my father's death in 1980. We would visit him and his family in Cincinnati where he had his practice many, many times through the 1950s, 60s, and into the mid 70s. He worked on all of us, especially my mother, and taught Dad what he could, as best an M.D. could learn from a D.O.. I have my Dad's hammer for those of you who knew Dr. Fulford well, you know what I mean. Few learned how to use it though. Dr. Fulford taught me in the 70s how to use it and I still use it once in a while on myself or my family. Dad was a little lost when Dr. Fulford moved to Tucson, AZ due to his own problems with gout. I understand he did a great work out there. He visited each time he came back east. After my father passed away, Dr. Fulford would still come to visit with Mom for days at a time between speaking engagements. He even came once to my home in Pennsylvania with her to work on my family in the mid 1980s. What I witnessed and learned myself from Dr. Fulford was awesome throughout the 60s and 70s as a teenager and young adult. There are so many stories of what he did for my family and patients of my Dad's I could probably write a short article myself. He was a truly incredible healer and maintaind a commanding presence. Though, he was very humble as well. Very humble. I highly recommend reading his book and perform any of the preventive maintenance activities you can. You will be in better health. May God Bless Dr. Fulford, his wife Glenna and sons Rich and David. ... Read more

Book Description For thousands of years -- indeed, for all of human history except for the past 50 to 70 years in Western societies -- plants have been our chief source of medicine. The fascinating story that unfolds in the pages of this book is much more than a catalog of natural cures. Equal parts scientific inquiry and cultural history, it's nothing less than a chronicle of the healer's art as it evolved from folk remedies to modern science. It's also an account of humanity's continuing quest to discover new medicines and to unravel the complex and often deeply mysterious interactions between the biochemistry of plants and the human body. From the doctor-philosophers of classical antiquity to the shamans of today's rain forests, healers have prescribed a multitude of cures culled from the flora around them, and in many societies these ancient treatments are still in everyday use. In India, for example, Ayurvedic physicians continue a tradition first codified in written form many centuries before the birth of Christ. The origins of Chinese medicine are similarly shrouded in myth, but its effectiveness has been proved time and time again although the reasons why frequently remain elusive. And in many cases, Western medicine has been too quick to reject as "old wives' tales" the lessons learned and refined over countless generations. In Nature's Medicine you'll learn how a malaria-stricken Spanish countess was cured by the bark of a Peruvian tree, the source of what we now call quinine, and how 18th-century doctors used digitalis for all sorts of ills -- but, ironically, not for heart disease. You'll discover that few natural compounds have been used as the basis for modern pharmaceutical drugs but that many have served as molecular templates for proprietary synthetic formulas. And you'll see how ancient theories based on different views of the human body can lead to surprisingly effective medicines. Featuring some 200 full-color photographs, period illustrations from old medical texts, and watercolors illustrating a catalog of 102 healing herbs, Nature's Medicine is at once a vivid historical chronicle, a valuable compendiu
