    Book Description

Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases brings a pioneering interactive approach to the teaching of neuroanatomy, using over 100 actual Clinical Cases and high-quality radiologic images to bring the subject to life. This approach allows students to appreciate the clinical relevance of structural details as they are being learned, and to integrate knowledge of disparate functional systems, since a single lesion may affect several different neural structures and pathways.

Most of the book comprises chapters that explain the major neuroanatomical systems. Each chapter first presents background material including an overview of relevant neuroanatomical structures and pathways, and a brief discussion of related clinical disorders. The second half of each chapter is devoted to clinical cases. The cases begin with a narrative of how the patient developed symptoms, and what deficits were found upon neurological examination. Boldface type highlights important symptoms and signs. A series of questions challenges the reader to deduce the neuroanatomical location of the patient's lesion, and the diagnosis. Discussion and answers follow, and an epilogue reveals the actual outcome.

One of the book's most innovative features is the inclusion of CT and MRI scans that depict each patient's lesion. These radiographs help the reader develop skills in interpreting the same kinds of diagnostic images employed in clinical practice.

The book is intended primarily for first- or second-year medical students enrolled in a basic neuroanatomy, neurobiology or neuroscience course. It is also a valuable resource for advanced medical students and residents, as well as students of other health professions, notably physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, dentistry, speech therapy, and neuropsychology. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too Verbose and Unorganized for Medical School
The book is disjointed and doesn't do a good job explaining the pathways- especially when you get to the Cranial Nerves. I agree with the other medical student reviewing this book- too verbose and way too confusing for most medical students. I think professors like to believe it's a good book b/c it goes into laborious details. However, neuro is hard enough without. I wouldn't waste my time b/c you will get more confused simply trying to read the book! Stick woth the notes and a concise study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing style
This was a great source, not as a formal neuroanatomy text, but for an understanding of clinical cases. It has great illustrations, is extremely well-organized, and the writing is not cluttered with anatomical connections. Lastly, the details of the neurological and mental status exams were helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Neuroanatomy through clinical cases
I have used this book for the clinical medicine portion of my Neuroscience course. It is excellently written and provides explicit memorable clinical examples and casefindings useful for the medical student or resident. A companion web site guides the student though all aspects of the neurological exam by media presentations and examples. I highly recommend the use of this text for Neuroanatomy and Neurology review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Organized and Illustrated. Simply An Exceptional Text.
Every once in a while a special textbook comes along that makes a subject an utter delight to learn; "Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases" is most definitely such a text. The merits of this book are just too many to enumerate but I will provide some specific examples of its strengths.

The book has great detail but the strength of its organization is what makes this aspect an asset rather than a liability. Most chapters have a 'Brief Anatomical Study Guide' at the beginning that rivals the content of most traditional Neuroanatomy texts. These sections are well illustrated with great descriptions. Furthermore this traditional approach is clearly delineated from the clinical content in the chapter which is marked with 'KCC' (Key Clinical Concept). Every clinical point in my Neuroscience course was covered in this book making it an invaluable resource for clarification. Sure there is WAY more clinical content in the book than in my course but because the sections are marked clearly it's easy to find specific vignettes. Each chapter ends with specific clinical problems that are discussed in full with ample radiographic images. The clinical cases for me served to test, clarify and reinforce the material presented in the brief anatomical study guide. They are no doubt the most 'fun' part of the book (thinking in Med School...OMG!!).

Overall, rather than read through the same material trying to memorize (ala syllabus), going through the brief guide then the clinical concepts and finally the problems provided the necessary repetition yet also allowed for an innovative and engaging approach to learning.

The author should really be applauded for his diligence and enthusiasm, it truly is infectious. The presence of numerous mnemonics and analogies (eg/ The Putamen-Globus Palladus ice cream cone analogy) show the type of effort and commitment to teaching that students crave. Also I really liked the bold highlighting of certain key words and phrases, it makes it so much easier to review. Simply by reading the bold terms and the surrounding text much of the key material can be assimilated (good for the Boards).

Our assigned text was Nolte which is a great ATLAS (not much more) but this is an exemplary TEXT. The many illustrations in Blumenfeld's book emphasized concepts and were structured to be high yield. Nolte had more gross specimens and slides. So I used Blumenfeld exclusively for the written and the Nolte atlas (not the text!) for lab.

This book is going to be on my shelf for many years to come. Bravo Dr. Blumenfeld!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! FINALLY THE TRUTH IS TOLD!
Dr. Blaylock, in his book reviews countless studies that prove the dangers of excitotoxins. The powerful food industry and others are implicated in trying to cover up this truth.

I have read this book and am very grateful that an M.D. went against the grain and helped a nation understand the truth. The truth that excitotoxins are dangerous, they kill neurons and are in practically everything.

In science today there exists ubiquitous politics. Those who fund studies wish a certain outcome, and usually get it with the help of exclusionary interpretation. If science is the study of truth through empirical studies, and political power covers this truth, then today's science is largely a matter of power and politics, and not truth. This is how the large part of society is deceived. This is the case with the FDA's widespread approval of aspartame (and aspartate/aspartic acid for that matter).

Because of their widespread use and acceptance in America; it begs the question, what's the agenda here? If you wanted to dumb down (make docile) a large population of people how would you do it?

"The truth is obvious, everything else is questionable"

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear evidence of the dangers of MSG & Aspartame to children
Blaylock writes a story of brain damage and betrayal worthy of wide attention, especially among women of child-bearing age and parents. He presents clear evidence of severe damage to the hypothalamus, the regulator of most hormone systems, when glutamates and aspartates are ingested by pregnant and nursing women or by children. The relationship between low blood sugar levels and enhanced damage should be a wakeup call for diabetics and hypoglycemics, as well. This book is a bit of a slow read at first, but you have to understand some of the basic enzyme/neuron processes to grasp the tremendous potential for damage. Every parent should read this and take it to heart. The future of our children is truly endangered!

4-0 out of 5 stars good to know
I'm thinking of that song by Joe Jackson with the line "Everything causes cancer, everything..."

While I do not subscribe to the usual alarmist perspectives on what causes us harm (for there are truly so many things in modern society practically unavoidable, that it would make one insane to dwell on it), it is refreshing to experience a work that intelligently places blame on the not so usual suspects.

Governments that have profited for years on tobacco and foods that are engineered with questionable tactics are still pushing forward this notion that it is only illegal drugs and foods (and not the FDA variety) that are harmful.

Just as preaching about the so-called evils of marijuana only made more kids go out and do a variety of drugs - because they knew they were being lied to - it is "high time" to start learning the facts about the products commonly accepted as "safe." This way, you can once again circumvent the propaganda and make decisions for yourself.

    You are what you eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars scary
This book is excellent and should be read by anyone who cares about their health, but especially (future)parents who care about their children's brain health. Before I read this book I was one of the many people within this and other societies that had no clue that a lot of our food contains msg. Not only that, but this book also showed me how serious msg is and that although it is dangerous and trials have shown this dangers, nothing has been done about banning the substance from the food market. This book is very shocking, at least it was to me. The most shocking thing I learned is that msg is even used in babyfood, even though they are especially suceptable, because their brain has still a lot of growing to do. This book also tied in with one of my college research papers and so I got the chance to research the topic further and the most important information I came across, was that all trials that were done independately found somekind of a healthconcern, whereas trials done by the FDA and corporations didn't find any health concerns. So even if you don't buy this book, look out for aspartame and glutamates (for example: monosodium glutamate)or it might cost you your memory later on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useful although narrow
This book is mostly about links between MSG and Alzheimers/Parkinson's. It goes into a lot of scientific detail about prior studies, brain function, etc.

Unfortunately, I was already sold onto the idea that MSG etc are bad substances, so most of the book was irrelevant to me. I was looking for ways to find foods that are MSG free. In that pursuit, only the last 2 pages of the book help: list of common names of MSG or MSG-containing substances on food labels. The book was not practically useless, therefore.

While reading this book, please realize that MSG and NutraSweet are not the only problematic food additives. There are preservatives like BHT etc added to foods esp meats, and those are also suspected to have negative health effects. Yet this book does not discuss them (maybe they are not exactly neuro-exciters).

Overall, could be good reading for some, but I found minimal use of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting insights!
This book explains to us that, unfortunately we are not in our relationships just for the sake of "love". There is a lot more that explains why we are together with the people we are together with. It tells us about he "Hows" and "Whys" of ourselves and our relationships. It is painful to learn these things, but learning these things is the only way we can shed our next layer of skin and more on with our personal development. If you are in tune with your real self, many of these things the authors says in this book will click inside. If you'd like another great book on this topic, I suggest you read "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It is even better in the way it explains the patterns we develop both in our minds and in our relationships. I'm sure you will love it if you like to really learn about relationships.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but lacks the "punch" of CODEPENDENT NO MORE
This is Melody Beattie's second book and is the sequel to the hugely successful CODEPENDENT NO MORE. If it was the job of the first book to introduce that word - "codependent" - then it is the job of this book to elaborate on the condition and what we are supposed to do with our lives once we are no longer afflicted by it. The result, of course, is that this book does not have quite the "sway" that the first book does. But it is still worth reading if you are a fan of Beattie or are interested in this topic.

A lot of insults have been hurled at the concept of "codependent" over the last several years, and I suspect that most of it has to do with the fuzzy definition of the word itself, and the somewhat "vague" nature of recovery from this condition. In other words, you know an alcoholic has "recovered" when they stop drinking, a drug addict has recovered when they stop taking drugs, a kleptomaniac has recovered when they stop stealing, and so on. . . . But what exactly is a codependent and how do you know when you have recovered from it? What *observable affects* can be measured? Basically, a "codependent" is a person who believes their happiness lies in another person and then becomes obsessed with controlling that other person. That is the definition Beattie provides in her first book, and if you weren't satisfied with that definition or explanation, then you won't be satisfied with this book either. BEYOND CODEPENDENCY is geared toward people who have accepted the author's premise, and who are ready to follow her toward her description of what recovery means. The author indicates that one knows they have recovered from codependency when they stop seeking for approval in others and are content with their own appraisals of their self-worth.

Suffice it to say that this is not exactly "scientific" in that it cannot be observed and replicated in a lab, and even I, a lover of Beattie's work for years, still find the whole category a little fuzzy and am not sure if it is the main problem to be focused on (I believe "codependency" is only one aspect of other more vital issues, and is not the main issue itself). But this book is uplifting and I find Melody Beattie inspiring. If you enjoyed her first book, and you enjoy books that feel supportive in a rhetorical sense, then you will probably enjoy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The narrator absolutely ruins this book
The woman who narrates this book is terrible. The author's actual writing is good, poignant, therapeutic, and comforting, but I had to constantly try to tune out the narrator's obnoxious and melodramatic rendition of the text. Her voice changes from a condescending, cloying and excessively pitying tone during most of the text to an inappropriate and downright nasty one for most quotes the author has included from "real stories" she has encountered. I started dreading the real-life quotes because I knew the narrator would switch to the rude, mocking voice she used for the quotes. It's really a shame, because much of what is written in this book is valuable information, even if it probably should be common sense (common sense, after all, isn't so common). I recommend the BOOK, but avoid the audio version if you possibly can - or spare yourself and get the abridged one because hearing this woman's melodrama is truly a trial all by itself.

2-0 out of 5 stars rule your own life
"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."
    "Ooops, better take an inventory..."
    "Ooops, better own my worth..."
    "Ooops, I made a mistake, but that's...okay."

This book will succeed only in attaching a myriad of labels to your persona which will only further one's irrational beliefs that something is "wrong" with them.
Personal strength is only found within your self, not any book, not this one.
The only question I would ever ask Ms. Beatty is if she's actually CONTROLLING people by making suggestions and giving unsolicited advice in her books. Of course, if she didn't have a ton of labels to slap on you, she'd sell no more books.

Caring is not a disease. Find other who care also, and avoid this codependency noise.

5-0 out of 5 stars This saved my sanity...
Wonderful book. It pointed out so many things that I wasn't aware were co-dependant issues that I have. Helped put the answers of why I do the things I do that for so long I lacked. She helps you no longer feel alone. Good book for anyone who is ready to face this and stop it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
It is in 250 pages, with margins to take and make your own notes (a feature I used and enjoyed). It is in two parts and 18 chapters. The first Neuro Presentations (coma, headache, dizzy, dementia, ataxia). The second is Neuro Disease (vascular, infectious, trauma, demyelinating, metabolic/systemic, movement, Neoplastic, epilepsy, sleep, spinal cord, neuromuscular, pain, pediatric). Each chapter has 4-7 cases. Each case is about 2-3 pages in length. Cases are very interactive and provoking; the questions are followed by the answers/explanations. The case is built in the following manner: history and exam, summarize it, localize (not all), differential diagnosis, obtain further info, narrow the differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis.
In addition, there are informative concise reviews related to the case, for example Status protocol.
I used this book during my oral board preparation, and I found it very helpful. I agree with the two previous reviewers from June 2004.

    Book Description

She was a beautiful doelike child, with an intense, graceful fragility. In her first year, she picked up words, smiled and laughed, and learned to walk. But then Anne-Marie began to turn inward. And when her little girl lost some of the words she had acquired, cried inconsolably, and showed no interest in anyone around her, Catherine Maurice took her to doctors who gave her a devastating diagnosis: autism.
In their desperate struggle to save their daughter, the Maurices plunged into a medical nightmare of false hopes, "miracle cures," and infuriating suggestions that Anne-Marie's autism was somehow their fault. Finally, Anne-Marie was saved by an intensive behavioral therapy.
Let Me Hear Your Voice is a mother's illuminating account of how one family triumphed over autism. It is an absolutely unforgettable book, as beautifully written as it is informative.

2-0 out of 5 stars Autism is not a "fate worse than death"
This is a well-written and interesting book. Catherine Maurice's devastating criticisms of the fraudulent therapies which attempt to make mothers feel guilty for their children's autism would alone make the book worth reading.

However, I have three very major concerns about the book.

The first is that Maurice presents Lovaas's version of ABA as the only possible option, ignoring the fact that there are other educational methods (such as TEACCH, Greenspan, or the various other techniques within the behavioural field such as the Koegels' modifications of ABA), which also have solid scientific evidence backing them.

Secondly, she also ignores the experts who have raised doubts about Lovaas's claim to have effected complete "recoveries" from autism, and who have pointed out that greatly improving a child's level of functioning, while vitally important, is not the same as a "cure". I've seen too many parents who read Maurice's book and immediately start to plan on the basis that after a few years of Lovaas treatment, their child will be completely normal. The overwhelming balance of evidence is that as a rule autistic children grow up to be autistic adults. We (I have high-functioning autism) may grow up to be independent, happy and successful adults, such as Dr. Temple Grandin, but we remain "different", and often experience great stress from the constant pressure placed on us by families and society to be more "normal".

Thirdly, I was worried by the way in which she constantly treats autism as a tragedy and a fate worse than death, and speaks of dragging her children kicking and screaming out of autism, forcing them to be "normal". Autism certainly doesn't make life easy (and I work with kids with severe autism combined with severe mental retardation, so I know just how difficult it can be), but nonetheless it's also part of who I am, not a "shell" in which there is a normal person hidden away. How would you feel if you found out that your parents viewed who you are as a tragedy to be cured at all costs?

ABA can be a very useful way of teaching, but I'm worried about people who use it not to teach children but to try to "force" them to be normal. There's a big difference between trying to help someone learn and function better and trying to "fix" them by turning them into someone else completely.

I'd recommend that people who read this should not make it their only book on autism - they should also read a more general account of autism giving information on the condition itself and on various methods of educating autistic children, and also a first-person account such as those written by Dr. Grandin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional and Intellectual Introduction to Life with Autism
I found this book heart-rending, inspiring and informative. Maurice describes vividly the pain, terror, hope and confusion that a diagnosis of autism precipitates. She also presents in a clear-eyed way the difficulties of dealing with doctors, the seduction of fake miracle cures, and the continuing difficulties of parenting an autistic child when everyone's suddenly an expert on your kid and how to raise him or her. Maurice is a devout Catholic and described beautifully how religion affected her journey: I found these sections gutsy and inspiring. She does an excellent job providing an introduction to the best-documented treatment for autism, applied behavioral analysis. She also provides resources at the back for setting up programs, getting them paid for etc. Maurice does not make herself out to be perfect in this book: at times she is hot-headed, impatient and a bit of a know-it-all who has to bite back sharp comments. However, this is real life and I am glad she showed her strengths and weaknesses. If the book has any negative, it is that in one chapter Maurice spends a chunk preaching about how people today are not disciplining their kids. Since her oldest kid is only 7 when this book ends, it seems a bit premature to give others advice on the best way to raise children who will lead productive, responsible lives. However, she may be right. In any case, I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Offers hope
I found this book gave me much hope for what would otherwise have been a very devastating diagnosis for my 3 yr old son. I only wish the drills were described in more detail and that there was less religion and preaching. A good first read, but very sentimental and at times condescending.

2-0 out of 5 stars Positive plot, negative attitude
I have never lived with an autistic child. I can not speak for those parents who have to somehow cope with their child's disability. I am sure that this book provides some much-needed hope and inspiration to these parents, some of whom have also reviewed this book. However, it bears mentioning that although the plot is positive, the attitudes towards children with autism are not. I believe it is important to note that acceptance of a child no matter how they are is just important as trying to "fix" or "cure" them. This is a point regretfully absent from this book. Although many of the points made in this book are good ones, they are overshadowed by this absence. I thank the author for writing this book that seems to give hope to those who need hope most, but I warn against drawing all of your thoughts and opinions from the words of one other person.

    5-0 out of 5 stars I felt like I wasn't alone
I am a mother of an autistic daughter who was diagnosed a few months ago. This book really inspired me not to give up hope! While reading this book, I would be in tears as to how realistic it truely is. How you preceive your own child. How you go through all the stages of defeat, over and over again! and to reading about the most uplifting little spirits who overcome HUGE obsticals over and over again! This book both breaks your heart and heals it. Great book to give as a gift to those who are an important part in a little persons autistic life who just "don't get it" or want to know hands on what you are going through as a parent. I would recommend to anyone who has autism in their life. Be prepared with a tissue box. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love, love, love this book and CD!!!
Before this book I always had a hard time with Neuro. I just got by when I took the class and I did below average on the subject on step one. Before I took a rotation in Neuro I read this book and it changed everything for me. Now I love to get neuro questions and I'm much more secure about patients with neuro presentations. Although it does not provide the detail as you would get from a comprehensive book, it makes the basics and the most common problems very clear. The CD is helpful and fun! It should be used along with the book; not just at the end. The CD has many pictures (gross and drawings) that help to visualize the neuro layout of the CNS. The great thing about this book is that you can read and understand it in a couple days if you're motivated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Goldberg just hit a home run with this book and anatomy made ridic simple. Neuro combined with the high yield fix book complement each other so well. Together they should be your primary board review. They are also great to read for you med school course also. Beautiful books

3-0 out of 5 stars Superficial explanations, too small in size, disorganized.
Well the thing about this book is that it really is not organized very well. So if you think that you're going to feel like your reading microbiology MRS book and getting that feeling like your really learning easily from it forget it. That is what I thought.
They book can get you frustrated at many pages and areas as you're reading it because it only explains crucial stuff superficially. I really liked the CD that came with it tho.
Although over simplistic; but builds up your confidence; so I really use the CD, I liked the CD even more then the book itself; you should read the book first to get the most out of the CD that comes with it. You need a nice atlas of neuroanatomy when reading this book....
Once you get to the end of this book and use the CD you feel better about it, you're feeling a little better by then but it's so weird the side of the book its so small does not give you enough room to add notes to it. The drawings are too small and not really enough to be considered good for the reader; you really get a little lost easily here and there when trying to follow the stuff that it tells you to look at in the text.
The pictures that it tells you to follow are misplaced in the pages...
    They could be better positioned.
And also it does not explain stuff very well I mean if he just stretched out more when he's already explaining something it would be great, like when he talked about the brown sequad syndrome I had to read it elsewhere because I did not get the picture from reading his book alone of what that was.
Although the author tries to convey the message in an easy way, that makes it undemanding for you to understand it, the disorganization and the lack of explanations on some areas don't make this book thorough...
That's why the FA book rates it as a B book and not as an A book like it does for HY neuroanatomy.
I prefer this book's format tho then HY neuroanatomy but the quality of this book in several aspects could be so much improved.
The author should for his 4th edition pay a little more attention to the overall shape of the book and break down all the stuff that he's trying to explain; like really talk to the students; don't mind it's size that it might get to be, the important thing should be that then you can easily follow a very hard subject, such as neuroanatomy. In order to make its ratings go up, the size of the book should increase in size.
It will make it easier for us to follow and add notes, y?know graphs and all?
Meaning that this book has some flaws right that could be fixed very easily, overall you need a really nice neuroanatomy atlas to get the most out of this book.
It really stresses you out trying to read through those small letterings and the small drawings and so forth and so on.
It's already got its way cutout for to being an A+ rated book...
Just needs a little more shaping in place especially with the length of its explanations too and the size of the book which I think should be about the size of the same book from the series microbiology made ridiculously simple for in that way it would be easier to look at the hand made drawings plus the fact that we could add notes to it.

As a medical student, I suggest that this is the first place you go to learn about neuroanatomy. It gives you the basics and builds a foundation that you can build on. After a few hours with this book, I was weeks ahead of my classmates!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a kind of magic
I'm a emergency physician. In my junior residency,i had a hard time approaching the neurology patients, so needed neuroscience knowledge urgently. However most books i had met were tomes and time-consuming for me, also i had to get more back of neuroanatomy for understanding big books. Accidentally i started this book. it's took only three days even in busy resident period. OH!!! It's a magical experience. This book prevented me from being burned out and saved my day and also gave me self-confidence on the neurology. At last,I could understand - the notorious - "one and a half syndrome" which even Adam's neurology failed to teach me. So fantastic. I couldn't forget that feeling. I highly recommend this book for all beginner stuck by neurology. ... Read more

    Book Description

This unique text, which fills the gap between shorter texts containing little explanatory material and the advanced compendia for those with a good working knowledge of neurological disorders, is intended for the novice and those physicians who require an update on the diagnosis of neurological disorders. To understand the symptoms and signs requires a good knowledge of the gross anatomy of the central nervous system and supporting tissues. This is achieved by the liberal use of the author's own detailed diagrams backed up with concise and practical guidance on diagnosis and treatment as well as appropriate case studies. This long awaited second edition of a highly popular guide reflects recent advances in the subject such as computed tomography and MRI which have replaced more invasive examination techniques. The tutorial approach will present readers with an authoritative view of the fundamentals of neurology in practice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations and a pleasure to read
I am a 3rd-year neurology resident, and I don't have the time nor the energy to plow through thousands of pages of densely written neurology textbooks. This book has wonderful illustrations that make it easy to remember the complexities of the nervous system so that you can put them to use for localization at the bedside. The text is clear but not verbose. I highly recommend this book for neurology residents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best illustrations around
Not the most complete book on neurological differential diagnosis (I do not know what book that would be), but is is a treasure simply for its amazing illustrations. You can actually see things only described about in other texts. It almost seems like one is at the neuroanatomy lab! The short vignettes are a nice touch and may be helpful to some. They serve to break up the text and reinforce the pathology just described. I think this book is best used by residents.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little known masterpiece
This beautifully written textbook is a one author tour de force on sorting out neurological differential diagnoses on the basis of the neurological exam and history.

The author, John Philip Patten, is a British neurologist whose classical training is evident in the thoroughness with which he discusses most of the problems. The artwork in the book is an especially attractive feature, having been produced by the author's son to very carefully illustrate the concepts his father expounds. The book is suitable for the neurological and neurosurgical resident keen on understanding how the clinical examination can help with diagnosis.

My only criticism is that the differential diagnoses offered are in no way comprehensive. If the author produced tables of differentials for each problem, along with the frequencies of each differential and explanations as to how to sort through them, the book would be much better. I sincerely hope this suggestion will be considered when the time comes for a new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Neuroanatomy for the Student and Practitioner
John Patton's Neurological Differential Diagnosis was the first text of neurology I purchased, at the suggestion of my chief resident Dr. John Stiller while doing my required 3-month clerkship during my medical training inthe 1980's. I still own the original 1977 Edition, and still make use of it's insightful diagrams and concise, to-the-point clinical discussions. Although I am not a neurologist, (I am a clincial anaesthesiologist specialized in the diagnosis and treatment ofchronic pain disorders, and an assistant professor of neuroscience at a university), I still find Patton's ingenious illustrations very helpful in mastering the neuroanatomy and pathophysiology of neurological diseases I see in the pain clinic setting. I also use the illustrations from this text in my graduate course on Clinical Neuroscince and Chronic Pain at my university. This is one of those textbooks whose information I really trust. The Second Edition''s table of contents looks much the same as the Firsts'. I would assume the Second Edition has retained the author's text and illustrations and has added some plates and discussions of neuroimaging. Overall, a very worthwhile investment for a medical student's, doctor's, or neuroscientist's library.

    Book Description

Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's HEAL YOUR HEADACHE puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program: Step 1: Avoid the "Quick Fix." Too often painkillers only make matters worse because of the crippling complication known as rebound. Step 2: Reduce Your Triggers. The crux of the program: a migraine diet that eliminates the foods that push headache sufferers over the top. Step 3: Raise Your Threshold. When diet and other lifestyle changes aren't enough, preventive medication can help stay the course.

That's it: in three steps turn your headache problems around. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally Headache Relief!!!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who suffers with migraine headaches occasionally or constantly and to anyone who has a loved one that suffers with migraine headaches.

I had headache discomfort ranging from irritating to excruciating everyday for four months. I saw my primary care doctor; his partner, several ER doctors and two neurologists and none of them could help very much in my constant struggle. After spending 3 ½ months on constant narcotics (the wrong thing to do) and 3 days in the hospital with little relief, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

A friend of mine researched doctors specializing in migraine headaches and found Dr. Buchholz. Of course it is a six-month waiting list to get into his office and I decided to read his book in the meantime. I will admit, I read it with much skepticism. I figured I would follow his guidelines and then when I had my appointment I would say, "I followed this advice and it did not work. Now What?" Instead, I found that his 3-step program was just what I needed. 7 months later, I have very few headaches and they go away with simple Tylenol.

I strongly recommend that the migraine sufferer and those close to them read this book and stick to its advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Anyone with Migraine Symptoms
David Buchholz condenses approximately 40,000 hours of clinical practice with headache suffers at one of the best teaching hospitals in the world, Johns Hopkins Hospitals, into a book that can, in less that 40 hours, transform your life. This book is the best information available if you suffer from headaches and other related facial, eye, ear, and balance problems that keep you from enjoying your life. That is my own experience. It worked for me. It can work for you if you want to take control of your migraine symptoms.

The book is not to be read once, but read again, and again, thought about, and studied. The book describes Buchholz's program for preventing migraine symptoms, but the process he describes is just as important for achieving results. That process discusses how to take control of your own treatment, working along side your treating physician rather than acting as the passive patient complaining of symptoms that the doctor is supposed to make go away. That is what took the time for me working with Dr. Buchholz's book. I had to teach myself a new way of interacting with my doctors where I took responsibility for my own symptoms and the outcomes of treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars belief in life after migraines
if you still believe in miracles, Santa Claus, the basic goodness of people, and physicians who can be "user friendly", you have to buy this book!

it's written as if the author were a member of your own family, he speaks to OUR level, not more and for once, not less. He anticipates your very next question or response, almost to the point of having a "sixth sense". The book can change your life, but only if you're willing to make the effort to take the first step. He can chase the monsters away, and renew your belief in miracles, Santa, pain-free days and the hope of a brand new tomorrow. Your life can be changed and saved for yourself, and your loved ones. I cannot express it more highly than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get back your life
I have suffered from migraines most of my life. Over the past six years they have become much more frequent and severe. I have tried every natural remedy and prevention I could find. Finally I saw a neurologist who prescribed one of the new migraine medications. I began taking them 2x week. My headaches became more frequent over a four year period as many as 3-5 times a week. Then I found Dr. David Buchholz's book, "Heal Your Headache, The 1-2-3 Program." I stopped taking the prescription drugs, began a headache diet he outlines. I have my life back !! I can not tell you what a remarkable difference this program has made in my life !!

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for my mom after over 30 years of other methods!!!
I bought this book for my mom. It is an easy read and the solutions offered very easy to follow. All it takes is someone that is willing. She was very willing after having headaches all of her adult life with nothing that worked. She read it and began following the steps completely...six months later her headaches have dramatically improved! Our sincerest thanks to Dr. David Buchholz. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Senneff offers HOPE for those suffering from neuropathy
This book is easy to read, well written and chockful of helpful information. I purchased it at a diabetes seminar, raced home and quickly read it. I was thrilled to find so much well-researched info on neuropathy in one book especially since my efforts at finding info on this painful, debilitating disease had previously yielded nothing helpful. I'm reading it again with my marker in hand as I will continue to use this book as an important reference in my search for help.

If you suffer from neuropathy, do yourself a favor and get this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Numb Toes and Aching Soles by John Senneff
A self-help book for people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy is very necessary, and this book is an excellent beginning, but there are some unfortunate holes in its coverage. Since doctors rarely volunteer information, it is important to know what questions to ask, and in this disease there are many questions to ask, since what works for one person might not work for another. There is apparently a great deal of ongoing medical research activity that might produce significant results in the near future; a strength of the book is the pointers that it gives to discussion groups and other sources of the latest information.

On the negative side (perhaps a revised edition is in the works?): 1) thyroid deficiency should really be added to the list of the notable (and treatable) causes (see, for example, American Family Physician, 1998, 57(4):755-766); 2) The section on alpha-lipoic acid has this vitamin-like molecule (C8H14O2S2, found in greatest abundance in meat) totally confounded with the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (C18H30O2, for which flax oil is a popular supplement). Another small section that would improve the book is a discussion of the probable causes of B-vitamin deficiency, for example antiulcer medications (Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, 2001, 54(5):531-534).

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading title
Numb Toes. That's what I wanted to learn about. I Read the book, tons of information on Peripheral Neuropathy but very little about toe numbness. Index only lists numbness on page 17. There in one paragraph I found numbness mentioned twice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
One reviwer had written: "It is very much like what you might find if you searched every issue of Prevention magazine looking for cures for a desease -- one would find everything from herbal cures to surgery and would have little idea of what, if anything might work for you."

This is true, but I don't have the time or the inclination to go out and locate every single issue, read them all from cover to cover, ask the opinion of various doctors about what I read, and also get the opinions of those who have actually tried using the various treatments.

That is what this book did. for me. I found it to be invaluable, and I learned a lot and picked up quite a few things to try.

5-0 out of 5 stars rated the best by my colleagues
I purchased this book in hopes of understanding why the addict does what he or she does. I work with many HIV/AIDS patients, and many of them are addicts. This book was amazing not only to me but to most of the colleagues who have been around this behavior many years. We were actually fighting over this book after everyone was taking about. It was very easy, quick reading, and very clearly stated. I just can't say enough about it. If you read it I can assure you that you will want to share the information and stories you read. Currently my copy is MIA so I am buying another few copies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent For The Professional or The Layman
Being a psychyology major in college specializing in addiction, as well as overcoming my own personal addictions, I found Twerski's book was excellent. I bought it simply as a text book supplement for a college course, and ended up reading it a few times. He gives a great insight into the mind of the addict, and nice overview of life AFTER addiction and the logical, spiritual, and emotional hurdles forever in front of the affected individual and those around him. I read this just after my third year of abstinence and pulled so much from it in my personal life. Whether you are an addict or just know or have been affected by one, have been through the twelve-step meetings or struggled alone, give it a try. It still sits in my library and is a book I often recommend to those I meet and are dealing with an aspect of addiciton, treatment, and sobriety.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book - but Rabbi Twerski has a better one
A very good book with the basics on addiction. I especially enjoyed the chapter on spirituality and the addict, although I would have liked to have seen a little more on this subject.

Twerski's book "The Spiritual Self" has what I was looking for and much more. I think it is a must read for ANYONE on the road to recovery. He explains how the role of the human spirit is essential in the addict's new life and how one does not even need to be religious (although it certainly helps!).

4-0 out of 5 stars A guide to understanding how the addict thinks
Finally, in plain English, this book explains how the addict thinks and why he treats himself and others the way he does. It doesn't solve the problem, but it does offer comfort in knowing that you are not to blame. I only wish the book went one step farther in offering some advice as to how to deal sanely with addictive behavior, how to react and perhaps what to expect when you do react. Overall, well worth reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
I was very impressed with the 3rd edition of this book back when I was in graduate student, and the 4th edition seems to have kept up the high standards. I highly recommend this book for anyone approaching advanced studies in any behavioral or neuroscientific field.

This textbook covers human neuropsychology from a more scientific, as opposed to clinical, viewpoint than many other graduate-level textbooks. Perhaps this is due to the authors' own research experiences, which have been conducted primarily with animal models. Personally, I think that this is a great strength, since the authors very effectively tie together the findings from human and animal work, and fill in the gaps which would remain speculative if one had to rely solely upon research with human subjects and clinical cases.

What this means is that there is very limited discussion of assessment and diagnosis, but a thorough review of the anatomical and neurochemical organization of the brain, and well as a thorough review of brain function broken down by behavioral domain (sensory, motor, language, memory, etc.) and by cortical region (frontal, temporal, parietal etc.).

Although published in 1996, this book still remains fundamentally state of the art, and a fine textbook in the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a PreGraduate Student of Neuroscience
Very conceptual with alot of research cases and physiological aspects, but perfect for anyone who is preparing for neurosciences and want a NO NONSENSE textbook to have and to keep referring to. It is definately fundamental

5-0 out of 5 stars A good text
This book intergrades different brain structures into holistic pictures that make people easier to understand how the brain works. I had enjoyed reading it! It had solved my puzzle about structures and functions of the brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I Understand
If you are encountering a person with an addictive personality for the first time in your life and find them perplexing and confusing to you, this book will shed insight as to why they act they way they do, what motivates them, and what causes them to become addictive. I was prompted to find out more about the addictive personality because of my future mother-in-law's behavior and attitude toward me. She has been an addictive personality for decades, using a multitude of different substances and events all at once. Though she is across the country and not in our daily lives, the effects of her addiction are felt and impact upon me and her son. I could not comprehend her behavior until now---the book was that helpful at explaining the 'mystery' of her addictive personality.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Was the Key that Opened Up My Life
No exaggeration. I'm considered to be a good person and a success, but have been deeply alone for years. I was trying to resolve an eating disorder when I came across this book. It explained exactly what was wrong, why, and how to heal and recover from not just the symptomatic eating disorder - but from the larger disease of addiction, which I now see has been at play in damaging so many aspects of my life. I wish I'd had this book 25 years ago. Everything finally makes sense. I'm so grateful for finding it.

4-0 out of 5 stars HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD
Currently I am experiencing a new way of recovering because I now know pretty much of what I need to deal with my addiction. My addictive personality ( AP) has shown me out right how she can do whatever she pleases without my permission, today, I have an understanding with (AP) and through reading and re-reading this book by Craig I have been able to establish ways of taking back my life without such a dramtic struggle with AP. I appreciate the person that gave me the book to read because it truly has enhance my way of thinking with my recovery, I can say from my heart that if it wasn't for the grace of my Lord Jesus I probably would not ever have received the opportunity to meet the person who gave me the book to read nor would I have had the opportunity to send these few words to the author or whom ever. Thanks Craig, it does work if you choose to work with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An important book for understanding society and addiction
Craig Nakken is a family therapist and addictions counsellor at the Family Therapy Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota. He describes the addictive personality as "the most important idea expressed in this book". Nakken believes that some people are more prone to addiction than others. He examines various causes of this including influences in childhood. He does not rule out agenetic element saying that, "In all likelihood, it will be found to be a combination of the two" (environmental and genetic influences). An addictive personality may express itself in any addiction. This has important consequences for treatment. As Nakken observes:- Recovery is not just about breaking off one's relationship with an object or event, though this is of great importance. Recovery is primarily about coming to know one's addictive personality and taking the necessary steps to rid oneself of addictive attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviours. An example of the effect of this is given:- "People in a recovery program for alcohol addiction need to clearly understand thatthey are prone to form a possible addictive relationship with another object or event - food for example. For these people, sobriety acquires a new dimension; instead of only monitoring their relationship with alcohol, they also need to learn how to monitor the addictive part of themselves." Craig Nakken believes that Society "can push a person with addictive tendencies toward addiction". In his book he outlines some values in modern society which are similar to addictive values. For those who are politically conscious this section provides an interesting slant on one effect of a consumer society. The section of the book devoted to the topic of recovery is perhaps the weakest section. This section would have benefited considerably from case studies and more detailed advice. -Reviewed by Patrick Harrington

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone born after 1945
This book, written in clear easily understood terms, is a MUST for anyone who thinks or feels they are family, friends or co-workers with someone prone to compulsive behaviour. Those of us who have not been through de-tox and/or a 12 step programme are so deficient in awareness of the illness of addiction as to be unable to understand the effect close proximity to this illness can have upon their own lives. Nakken explains the causes of addictive behaviour and the common theme between all forms of addiction. Whether you work with or for a 'Control Freak' live with an alchoholic or a gambler/shoplifter/over-eater, or have a child who is on drugs/shoplifting, this book is for you. An excellent first step to understanding the 'illness of the 20th Century'.Although revised for the 2nd edition (1996), it lacks a section on 'Further recommended reading', but anyone getting this far should contact the publisher for advice on books on more specific topics arising. ... "...an essential requirement for the library of any individual who works in the field...if you buy only one atlas, this is the one to by." (Journal of Neurosurgery, Vol. 98, June 2003)

"I will certainly use [The Brain Atlas] to teach our residents in neuroanatomy and will encourage them to purchase the book as well." --Volker K.H. Sonntag, M.D., Barrow Neurosurgical Associates, Ltd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Student Opinion
The photographs are excellent, but the index sucks. It is poorly organized and incomplete. Take my advice and buy this book for Neuroanatomy just for the pictures. The paperback edition is very afforadable. Just put lots of little flags on the pages or sections you use most. It will save you much brain-ache.

    4-0 out of 5 stars It's best!!
Hanaway's brain atlas is best neuroanatomy atlas for medical students in pre-clinical level. Its photos and illustrations are very clear and easy to understand. And it is good for self study. ... Read more
