2-0 out of 5 stars There is a better choice!
I bought this book thinking it would be a bigger and better version of the spiral bound Handbook of Nursing Diagnosis. It really isn't! I feel that this book is hard to navigate through and never use it! I paid 45ish dollars for this book and think it was a HUGE WASTE OF MONEY. I do, on the other hand, LOVE the SPIRAL BOUND HANDBOOK OF NURSING DIAGNOSIS by the same author Carpenito-Moyet. I have discussed this topic with many of my classmates who also have these books and eveyone of my classmates have agreed.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Case Management Bible
I am not a case manager, however I work with them on a regular basis. I have found this book extremely helpful in understanding the field, the impact case management can and does have on the health care delivery process, and how it helps improve outcomes and contain costs, especially in critical and chronic care cases. This book is an invaluable tool for case managers and anyone who requires proven, nuts and bolts information on the process of case management and the role of case managers in health care. Lots of basic, hands-on, how-to information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of practical ideas for clinicians
Helping patients change health-related behavior is a universal challenge for health care providers. In this extremely practical book, Rollnick and colleagues present a method for helping patients change based on the principles and "spirit" of Motivational Interviewing.

After presenting the basic concepts, each chapter focuses on a different task in the consultation process, from building rapport and setting an agenda to increasing motivation for change while minimizing resistance. The techniques presented are intended for use in brief consultations, but may be adapted for more extended encounters. Numerous clinical examples illustrating applications in diverse settings (and even some showing how NOT to do it) bring each strategy to life. Always respectful of the busy practitioner, the authors suggest ways for you to benefit from the book even if you have just a few hours to spend with it, and they encourage "creative adaptation" rather than "slavish adoption" of their approach.

If you want to become better at helping people change health-related behavior, and are new to a Stages of Change or Motivational Interviewing-based approach, this is a great place to start. If you have some experience with Motivational Interviewing, you will find a simplified model, a fresh take on familiar strategies, and probably some new ideas too. Reviewed by Deborah Van Horn, originally posted 3/6/02.

2-0 out of 5 stars not that great, not much "guide"ance
This book gave helpful perspectives regarding doctor-patient communication, but was not very enlightening. The problem might be that it was written from the perspective that the doctor is always correct, and the patient is always some poor sap who needs to be enlightened and trained as you would a child. I don't see this book awakening the human within some budding physician and transforming the physician into some effective communicator. The worst part was how many pages it took to convey helpful information.

I gave it more than one star because it does have good strategies in it, and I believe reading it would be better than reading nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, indeed
A simple, easy, and yet deep, thought-provoking book. ONLY ONE of this kind.

I am tring hard to implement some of their methods in Japan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rollnick et all rock!
Health Behavior Change dramatically simplifies and expands the Motivational Interviewing counseling style techniques underlined in Motivational Interviewing by Miller and Rollnick (1991). Health Behavior Change is very easy to read and provides a practical menu of "tools" that could assist individuals thinking and/or committed to behavioral change. Although the authors' targets are medical professionals, the book is a must for everyone involve in health care promotion and/or counseling (prevention workers, outreach workers, treatment advocates, drug and alcohol counselors, psychotherapists). It is also a great book to pass along to family members and anyone concerned in assisting others to move in the direction of change. The most important message: when we are moving in the direction of behavioral change, we need helpers who care, remain non-judgmental and help us tip the balance towards healthier behaviors. Assisting people to set their own realistic goals --however small, is crucial to facilitate meaningful, long lasting change. Love this book!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and thought provoking
I am a nurse who has worked in the areas of AIDS Counseling and testing, Family Planning and now drug abuse prevention in a school. Sometimes I am called upon to talk to students and "get them worried" about their drug and alcohol use. Much of what I read felt too coercive with students and, in practice, evoked much resistance. This book contains readily applicable techniques for helping your hear your clients concerns better so that you do understand their behavior in the context of their real lives and allows you to help move them toward concern and possibly behavior change. This should be a book included in ALL nursing curricula because of it's readily hands-on use capacity. Surely, reading and applying the book has been a processs (and much like behavior change itself) not a quick fix application. Great stuff. ... Read more

Book Description

Contemporary health care often lacks generosity of spirit, even when treatment is most efficient. Too many patients are left unhappy with how they are treated, and too many medical professionals feel estranged from the calling that drew them to medicine. Arthur W. Frank tells the stories of ill people, doctors, and nurses who are restoring generosity to medicine--generosity toward others and to themselves.

The Renewal of Generosity evokes medicine as the face-to-face encounter that comes before and after diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and surgeries. Frank calls upon the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin to reflect on stories of ill people, doctors, and nurses who transform demoralized medicine into caring relationships. He presents their stories as a source of consolation for both ill and professional alike and as an impetus to changing medical systems. Frank shows how generosity is being renewed through dialogue that is more than the exchange of information. Dialogue is an ethic and an ideal for people on both sides of the medical encounter who want to offer more to those they meet and who want their own lives enriched in the process.

The Renewal of Generosity views illness and medical work with grace and compassion, making an invaluable contribution to expanding our vision of suffering and healing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Multiple inaccurate answers
This study guide definitely needed more attention before it was published. I also have the 5th edition study guide and there are many mistakes that appear to be a lack of proofreading before publishing this newer edition. Many incongruencies here. I would recommend the 5th edition if you want to be certain of the tool you are using.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Study Guide Has Incorrect Answers!!!
I have found many errors in this study guide. I thought I was crazy at first, then the rest of the nursing class had the same concern. The errors are in the answer section, it will give you the wrong letter for the multiple choice answer and the correct rationale. I have contacted the publisher and received no response. Nursing School is hard enough, don't add to it with a very frustrating study guide with the wrong answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
An excellent text for Med/Surg nursing course. One you will want to keep for future reference. Indispensible!

5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and well-rounded guidebook for Home Health Care
This book I've subtitled "holding the bag" -- it is basically a text book for nurses, telling them how to deal with the patient after the doctor has left the room. It includes how to live with a diagnosis, a disease, and deal with the side-effects of a cure. It not only provides precise medical information, but includes psychological and 'daily-life' information as well. As it is designed for nurses, the vocabulary is technical, and the illustrations are graphic; if you really want to understand what the doctors just told you, this is the place to go. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars medical- Surgical review book
I have used this book all semester and plan to use it for next semester also. It is very well written. It is alot easier to understand then a textbook. I found it easier to study from this book, along with my notes, then reading a text book. It breaks down everything for you into a outline. Good book I've already ordered another review book for Pediatrics

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth their weight in gold!
This book and the rest in the series(they have all you need for BSN program) were irreplacable to me in my BSN studies. I just graduated one of the hardest programs in the state with a 3.642 GPA. 3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much About Products
The sparse information in WOUND CARE about caring for wounds and preventing them is superb, but the manual is primarily a catalogue of products. The type of material provided in WOUND CARE can be found in the detail sheets packed with wound care products. I found the book a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wound Care, A Clinical Guide
This book is an excellent nursing resource for wound care. The opening provides a quick review of wounds and the healing process. It then moves on to proper wound assessment techniques, staging, and measurement. A section is dedicated to describing product types used for the prevention of decubitis ulcers. What I found most helpful in the nursing field was the wound care product descriptions. The book gives a general overview of product types and catagories then procedes to list specific brand name products. Each product is pictured for easier identification. The sizes of each product are listed along with the action, indications, contra-indications, and application/removal methods. This is excellent for product comparison as well as referral. I would suggest this for any nurse interested in wound care. It would also be a great reference book for nursing units that treat various wounds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much focus on products and not enough on wound care
Received this book as a CEU offering. It seemed 3/4 of the book was on products. In some ways this was helpful as a comparison reference, but in this day of managed care, I can't use all these products. Would have liked more information on wound healing

3-0 out of 5 stars a list of wound care products, not a text on doing woundcare
if you're looking for a comprehensive listing of wound care products (dressings, gels, etc.) then this book is a good resource. my only complaint is that it is misleadingly titled. only a brief, introductory section of the book actually discusses wound care, and it does it in such a short space that it is useless to the beginner (because it lacks detail and specificity) and useless to the experienced clinician (because it lacks in-depth analysis and meaningful references). it certainly does list just about every single wound product you can mention, though. it should have been titled "the wound care product PDR"

5-0 out of 5 stars Product information is wonderful
I am a wound care specialist, in the home care setting, this book has been very beneficial . I use this book as a PDR for wound care products. This book is also a wonderful teaching/ educational aide to those not familer w/ wound care products. ... Read more
