5-0 out of 5 stars Pain: Clinical Manuel
Very helpful for pain stradgies for patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rates a 20 on the VAS!!
I found this book so helpful to me in my practice, that I bought a second copy - leave one in the office, and one at home so that whenver I need a reference, it is right there. Margo and Chris have provided those of us interested in pain managment with a jewel - this book just has it all. And they generously allow you to photocopy patient education materials.

It is the best thing out there. My only regret about this book is the quality of the paper - too thin, and when you use it all the time, it tears easily. I hope in the third edition the publisher will upgrade the paper. I would be willing to spend more for better quality paper.

So, on a scale of 0 - 10, with 0 being blah and 10 being SUPER, this book is a 20!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain: Clinical manual
Absolutely the most complete and best resource for pain management. A must for any clinician interested in pain management. McCaffery is a recognized and respected nursing expert in pain management and shares her knowledge and expertise in this manual with concise information and many reproducible materials that can be used in clinical practice. As a nurse educator and hospice nurse, this manual is my bible for teaching about pain management and managing pain in my patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain: Clinical Manual
It is not often one finds a text that is useful on a day to day basis. This text is truly a gem in providing information for physicians, nurses, technicians and other personnel who deal with people living with pain on a day to day basis. Numerous charts, diagrams, understandable explanations are attractive. The amount of reproducible information alone (patient education materials, pain evaluation assessment tools, etc.) make this book a MUST HAVE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain:Clinical Manual
This book is superbly written. It is an invaluable tool in my day-to-day interaction with patients in pain. The patient evaluation tools and charts alone make this an indispensible tool for anyone involved in the care of pain patients. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

This innovative new text is designed to help nursing students excel in the increasingly complex, multicultural health care workplace. The goal of this practical text is to help students overcome their cultural biases and develop the skills and techniques they will need to communicate effectively and compassionately with patients and health care providers from other cultures. Eliciting assessment data and cultural preferences and teaching about procedures, hospital policy, and home care to patients and families from other cultures are just a few of the valuable communication techniques covered in this invaluable text.(communication, multicultural, cultural, transcultural, minority, international, communication skills) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, well-organized and practice-oriented.
This is a comprehensive, well-organized, practical guide in transcultural communication. The special features such as the self-assessment exercises, self-evaluation exercises, diary, and end-of-chapter questions are particularly motivating and instructive to the beginner transcultural communication practitioner. Although the book is practice-oriented, mentioning the contribution of Leininger to transcultural nursing theory would have been appropriate.

Another special feature that I liked is the discussion of culturally appropriate nursing diagnoses. It explains why the NANDA taxonomy may be culturally biased and provides recommendations for writing more culturally appropriate nursing diagnoses.

Another feature is the chapter on working with interpreters. It provides guidelines for working with and without interpreters.. I think a section on sign-language or deaf-interpreters would have been a nice addition. There are also on-line translation resources that are now available.

I also liked the annotated list of books and films. I would suggest adding books such as by nurse-anthropologist Jody Glittenberg, "To the mountain and back", of her experiences as a nurse and anthropologist in Guatemala.

I reviewed the 1999 paperback edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this Series!! in fact I am Acing my Nursing Tests
Here is the lowdown. Medical-Surgical Nursing is alot of material. This book puts the Data in Outline Form and highlights critical and key points. It comes with a diskette, I find most helpful in verifying my level of understanding. I bought the Lipincott's series as well but this is the book I use. I rarely refer to my textbook, because the narrative sometimes gets to be too much, leaving me swimming in facts. This book will NOT do that to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, the only nursing book I refer to now!
Remember going through nursing school and the MOUNDS of reading to be done? This book is the best thing since sliced bread! Very to the point, great to do care plans by. A short sentence on patho, obj and subj signs and symptoms, tests related to illness; medical, pharm, and nursing care, I could go on and on. Great job on this one. I wouldn't do without it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for nursing students
This book and disk together form an invaluable aid to nursing students. The book is written in a clear, quick and easy to follow note type format. It includes teaching tips, nursing notes and nursing interventions as well as critical thinking questions. The disk has a series of NCLEX type questions that can be accessed in either study or test mode. One of a series of worth-the-effort to own books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was purchased for my hospital's medical library
I sat down looking at nursing books to help me clinically, as a nurse post-refresher course. With my nursing science not at the forefront of my remembrance, I found this book to be a wonderful source of information, scientific rationale and nursing implications in detail. Even the more experienced nurses could benefit from this book as people work in various areas that are very specific to pediatrics, maternal child, etc. When one decides to go back into nursing and winds up in med/surg, this book would be an excellent reminder of what we are looking for and what is to be done, in the R.N. role. After some reading in my library, I decided to make it one book in my own that will be well used. There are many books out there, but this is not only helpful but extremely user friendly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a beginner
This text offers a decent overview of coexixting conditions and how they affect nursing care. Good for the beginning nurse in a hospital setting-not strictly a 'critical care" text. ... Read more
