Book Description

Along with increasing life expectancy comes the knowledge that manyAmericans will one day enter nursing homes. Who are the people who will care forus or for our relatives? Nancy Foner provides a major study of institutionalcare that focuses on nursing aides, who are the backbone of American nursinghomes. She examines the strains and paradoxes facing nursing aidesasked, on theone hand, to provide compassionate care and, on the other, to cope with thepressures of the workplace and the institution. Aides are expected to look after patients, who are predominantly older women, with kindness and consideration, but nursing home regulations and bureaucraticforces often hinder even the best efforts to offer consistently supportive care.Positioned at the bottom of the nursing hierarchy, aides must cope with theneeds of frail, dependent residents, pressures from patients' relatives and fromtheir own families, and demands of supervisors and coworkers. Foner's detailed description and analysis of caregiving dilemmas, based onintensive field research in a New York facility, brings the perspective of thenursing aides to the fore. This is a timely contribution to the study of work, bureaucracy, and the future of an aging American population. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Assisting in Long-Term Care third edition
The authors seem to out do themselves with each new edition that comes to press. Most text books are out of date before they go to press and certainly before the instructors can make their lesson plans for the students. By the instructor using the work book and the guide with this text you will have an unbeatable combination. Simple language and the technical blend and the student is able to comprehend with minimum difficulty. The previous editions have retired to become reference texts and so will the Third Edition when the Fourth Edition becomes available for this Instructor of a Certified Nursing Assistant Class at our local Technical College.

5-0 out of 5 stars ASSISTING IN LONG-TERM CARE
I am using this textbook for a CNA course. I looked it over before registering for the class and the textbook attracted me to the course. It is colorful, well-organized, and thorough. I was impressed with the range of topics covered and variety of ways material is presented and re-enforced. The study aides and headings are easy to use and it is easy to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who will be working with the elderly in a long-term care setting. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Long Term Care
I found this book to be useless. If you have attended any investment seminars like USAA, John Hancock, Fidelity etc. you get the same information. Medicare and AARP free booklets likewise give the same information. I was terribly disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A high-quality, complete book
I am a consumer who is thinking of buying long-term care insurance. I've read a number of books, and this is the best in terms of completeness. I would especially recommend it to people who have already read one or more books covering the basics of long-term care insurance and elder care.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 3rd edition is comprehensive and exact
Updated resources for agents and consumers

The third edition of Long-Term Care, by Jason Goetze, is now available. Published by Dearborn Financial Publishing, this book is intended as the bible for the continuing education of the serious LTC agent. It is common knowledge that many CE courses in LTC are not worth the money or the time spent on them. At best they sometimes rehash the same old cliches. At worst they provide misleading and inaccurate information about LTC. CE instructors

would do themselves and their students a service by studying Goetze's book, which is comprehensive and exact. Agents may not be able to get satisfaction from their formal CE classes, but by reading this publication they can rest assured that they have done right by themselves and their clients. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for making an extremely important decision
For those about to make the important decision of placing a loved one in a skilled nursing facility, this is an important tool. As a nursing home administrator, I know how tough it is to maintain a quality nursing home. Some succeed and some do not. As part of your preparations for this major move, read this book.

Wayne D. Ford, Ph.D., author of "Nursing Home Leadership" docwifford@msn.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it at CareScout.com
This book was an invaluable resource to help me with the difficult task of finding the best care for my mother with Alzheimer's. I was even able to read it for free, online at CareScout.com! Cuts through the clutter, gives you insider industry information that helps you separate the good from the bad in terms you can understand. There's also info on long term care insurance, and helpful checklists for finding the best care.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource!
As a financial consultant, I am faced with an increasing demand from clients to assist them, or their aging parents, with long-term care planning. When you deal with the emotional issues of admitting a loved one to a nursing home, where do you start your research? Right here! Wouldn't it be nice to know, ahead of time, if a home has ever been cited for any violations? Wouldn't you like to know what those violations were and whether or not they had been addressed and rectified? This guide provides you with much of that information. Furthermore, the crash course on long-term care planning, at the beginning of the book, is excellent. This guide proves to be particularly valuable for the children of aging parents who are geographically distanced from their parents and they don't have a first-hand knowledge of their parents' city or the homes within that area. An absolute must for anyone who is struggling with the issue of admitting a loved one into, or caring for a loved one who is already in a long-term care facility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only place I have ever seen Nursing Homes rated and ranked!
Great book. Mr. Bua seems to be the only person willing to tell us which nursing homes are better than others, and back up his rankings with facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Bua's book puts an end to relying upon hearsay.
The process of selecting a nursing home amongst the hundreds and perhaps thousands in a region is beyond the ability of any one person. In the past most people would rely on the good or bad things that they had hear about various facilities as the basis for their decision making. Mr. Bua's book gives the readers an idea about how to evaluate nursing homes as well as a starting point from which to begin an educated search. Philip Johnson ... Read more

It is an excellent resource for new Administrators and new Directors of Nursing to help them understand their role and responsibilities in Long Term Care.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great compliance ideas
This is a very good compliance book. Gives lots of ideas, a few forms. Would be very good for a new DON or a new QA employee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas; easy-reading format.
I found this book helpful in its practical suggestions on preparing for survey, as well as keeping our facility "surveyor ready." I gave "Nuts and Bolts" four stars because of its easy and friendly reading. However, two things kept interrupting my involvement with this book. Was Carolyn Casey Frazier referring only to long-term care compliance in Texas? I had to crosscheck several statements with my own state's regulations. Indeed, they did not all apply. The other problem I had with this text -and which took away from its credibility - were the number of spelling errors, incorrect use of acronyms and grammatical bloopers. Good grief. I get embarrassed for our profession at times. One example revealed the word "heal" used several times in reference to the anatomical part of the foot. I feel the publisher, editors and proofreaders did the author an injustice.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Everyone Needs to Know About Nursing Homes
This book is fantastic! I am an assistant superintendent of schools and I can see that Mrs. Frazier understands the meaning of a state compliance visit. We have the same kinds of compliance visits in the field of education. This book would really help a family know what to look for when trying to make the difficult decision of placing a loved one in a nursing home. It would also be very helpful for nursing students to read and comprehend this text. ... Read more
