5-0 out of 5 stars Florence Nightingale brought to life
As a nurse and amateur Florence Nightingale historian, I was so excited to find this book. The content did not disappoint me. It offers the best coverage of the life of this extraordinary woman I've seen or read. This book is exciting, informative, and beautiful.

Nightingale transformed healthcare in the nineteenth century, and built a foundation for modern nursing. Dossey's clear writing, coupled with her extensive research, presents an enjoyable, comprehensive picture of the significance of Nightingale's life. The historical photographs and illustrations complemented the text and were a delight to view.

I recommend the book to anyone interested in nursing, history or the biography of an amazing woman. Thank you Barbara Dossey for bringing Florence Nightingale to life in this wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Florence Nightingale: Mystic, Visionary, Healer
This beautiful book is the most comprehensive and creative examintation I have ever read of the life of this remarkable woman. The book is profusely illustrated. Many of the images are in full color and have not been previously printed. Words and images combine to produce insights of incredible depth and beauty. The author's straightforward and readable writing style reminds readers of Nightingale's own writings. Clearly, Dossey has a connection with the fascinating Miss Nightingale that spans the boundaries of time and space. This is lucky for us, the readers of this sesntive portrait of one of the most amazing women in history. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone interested in feminist history, healing, the path of the mystic, leadership, or the history of nursing. It will surely become a classic in its genre!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Inspiring Book
I knew of Florence Nightingale's nursing activities before reading this book but had no idea of the extent of her self-discipline, dedication and accomplishments. She was a systems analyst, administrator, networker and mystic who devoted her life to doing God's work. She was also a prolific writer of books, lay reports, pamphlets and thousands of letters. The author provides a wealth of background material describing the historic times and places associated with Florence Nightingale. One of the things I appreciated about this book were the many maps and photographs appropriately placed near the text about the person or places.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding biography
This is unquestionably the best biography of Nightingale ever written. The author reminds us that Nightingale was one of the first statisticians -- one of the first members of the statistical society in the U.K. and for many years the only woman member. Nightingale collected and published voluminous statistics about health care (she proved that the rate of childbirth fever was lower among women cared for by midwives vs those cared for by physicians and surmised correctly that the difference was that the midwives washed their hands and established hygiene in the birth chamber. The physicians came to the birth room covered with blood from dissections.) The germ theory of disease had not been developed -- but she was able to reduce the death rate in the hospitals in Crimea by ensuring cleanliness, safe water and good food for the patients.) She was also a suffragist and one of the first signers of a petition in support of suffrage put forward by her
friends, the philosopher John Stuart Mill and his wife Harriet Taylor, who were prominent proponents of women's suffrage. Mill asked Nightingale to dedicate herself to the cause of female suffrage and she replied that there were others as qualified as she; she was needed to reform the British military, hospital and medical systems. Nightingale shook up the British military, hospital and medical establishments. She had many enemies because of her work -- and they became even more virulent when she was proved right. Unfortunately their calumnies persist to this day. While doing the work which first brought her to public attention she contracted Crimean Fever -- a common complaint of those who served in the Crimea War. Dossey points out that recent research indicates that Crimean Fever was probably brucellosis which was and is epidemic and endemic in the Crimea. (It occurs now, too, in the U.S. among persons who work with infected cattle.) Nightingale was a very devout Christian. At 17 she sought a direction for her life. She came to feel that she was called to serve the sick and took a vow of chastity when she was 17. Barbara Dossey is an R.N. with a Master's degree in nursing. She has written texts on intensive care nursing and on wholistic health. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing -- which signfies the high respect of her research peers for her work. This is the finest contribution she has made and that says a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars The original nursing textbook
Florence Nightingale was the first "modern" nurse. Her methods were revolutionary in her time, and they form the basis for the techniques of patient management that have been taught ever since. This volume is a great overview, in her own words, of her ideas on care, cleanliness, and the nursing process in general. Her directives are widely applicable today. Anyone interested in the healthcare process, nursing, or notable women in history would do well to read this little volume. Highly recommended.

Much of what Florence Nightengale is still pertinet today when you get back to the basics of nursing. Excellent commentaries by various authors at the beginning of the book provide insights on how Nightengale's thoughts and theories apply to modern nursing. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all it is cracked up to be
This book obviously rests on the laureates of Polit and Hungler who were once well known for their research texts. This is just a revision of the same old...same old. The chapter on qualitative research is incomplete, and the examples are outdated. There are many newer more up to date and creative texts that focus the students to CRITICALLY think about what they are reading as they read it. This text does not. Keep it on the shelf, or use it as a doorstop.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for any Legal Nurse Consultant
Marketing is, by far, the hardest and scariest part of starting a Legal Nurse Consulting business. This book takes all of the key ideas in marketing, and organizes them in a consise, basic, and reader-friendly format. Though the marketing strategies are not any big new revelations, the organization of the book itself and the flow of strategies makes it unique from any other marketing books I have read. While the context of the book is an invaluable resource, the text is light, humorous and very easy to follow and understand. It is, if it is used as it was written, a roadmap to a successful and profitable Legal Nurse Consultant business. I highly recommend this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for all LNCs regardless of business experience
Betty and John Joos have created THE BEST marketing book for Legal Nurse Consultants ever written! The book is an easy read packed with real-life answers to real-life marketing questions. It is a practical approach to what really works, coupled with humor. Unbeknownst to them, they have become my business partners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every LNC should have this book!!
Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant is the most valuable book in my library! The Joos' walk LNCs through the world of marketing with ease. I've been lucky enough to have met these fine people in person and attended their marketing seminars. Here again, this is a "must do" for the independent legal nurse consultant. My cards and brochures went through major overhauls with their help and my business has prospered! Thank you both, John and Betty, for all you do! I'm looking forward to purchasing your next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Answers to your LNC marketing questions
All the accolades that have been written about the Joos' book are true! This little jewel of a book is one I know I will keep referring back to in the years to come. The marketing plan and suggestions are aimed specifically at legal nurses which makes everything in this book usable and practical. "Marketing for the LNC" is an invaluable source of information not only for nurses at the early stages of setting up a new consulting business but also for those that have been at it for awhile and are wanting to expand. Betty writes as one who has an understanding of the fears that most nurses experience who are marketing themselves for the first time. This is one of those "must have" books for "newbies" and seasoned LNC's. It explains what is needed to promote yourself and explains how to effectively do so in a professional manner without spending a small fortune. After reading this book, marketing started to feel like less of a necessary evil; although it's still not my favorite way to spend my non-billable hours....I now have a much clearer idea of the message I want to send to my prospective attorney-clients and I have the tools to help me get my message across.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for the beginning LNC...
This book takes one of the most difficult parts of the LNC business and breaks it down into simple and concise steps. From the initial, terrifying (yet neccessary) phone calls, to keeping your clients long-term...this book is invaluable. It's an "easy read" and I find myself referring to it frequently as a resource because of all the helpful tips it contains. Great job Betty and John! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!
This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always helpfull
All informations which are needed to work at an neonatal intensive care unit are in this book.
The chapters are clearly organized and the text is structured strictly to ensure that information can be quickly found.
Hopefully there will be anew edition soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done concise reference for the on-call physician.
This is a nicely written, well organized quick reference text for the practicing physician, or resident in training. I was impressed by the amount of clearly presented practical information. Definitely a good book to check for a quick suggestion for response to a clinical situation. I wish there had been a book like this one when I was a resident.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's everything you ever wanted to know
And some things you didn't.

It's Respiratory For Dummies! Everything You Ever Wanted To Know And Were Afraid To Ask! Stuff to look up later that you're kicking yourself going "I remembered that when I was in school but ... now?" A little blue six-ring binder (much like the Mechanical Ventilation one).

Chapters include patient assessment, clinical assessment (CXR, ECG, labs, PFTs, ABGs,) physiologic dynamics (including some hemodynamic monitoring stuff), therapeutics (which includes procedures, a blurb on mechanical ventilation, diseases/disorders, pharmacology, CPR stuff and the adult ACLS algorithms.)

Diagrams are clear and concise -- the very very basics (like how many generations to the TB tree?) all the way down to the more vague stuff. Really the only thing it's missing is anything on basic hyperbaric oxygen. Though that's not very conspicuous.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Nutrition Book
I own other nutrition books, and this is my favorite! In nursing school, my nutrition instructor, who was a registered dietitician with many years of experience, said that this was the best nutrition book on the market. Compared to the other books I have seen, I would agree. It is a wealth of information and includes both American and Canadian guidelines. There is a wonderful food composition table appendix included in the book that is very thorough nutritionally. The book covers carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids, digestion and absorption, metabolism and energy balance, overweight, underweight, and weight control, vitamins, water and minerals, nutrition through lifespan: pregnancy and infancy, childhood and adolescence, later adulthood, and many chapters on nutrition for health care issues such as renal failure, and diabetes mellitus. If I were not a nurse, I would want to own this book just for my own personal reference. I would advise anyone, whether in health care or not, to pick up a copy of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
I'm not going to be too verbose here, but I've used this text for three years now, and it's an excellent reference for basic pathophysiology. I've used it at both the undergraduate and medical school level, and I've been very pleased with both the organization and the content. It's not a replacement for Robbins Pathology, but it's an excellent supplement, and somewhat easier to read/use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you always wanted to know about pathophys........
I have the first edition of Dr. Lorraine Wilson's pathophys. text and have just bought the fifth edition. It is an excellent resource for any nurse who wants to maintain a current knowledge base in pathophysiology. It is a great resource. It is obvious that the main editor, Dr. Wilson, takes great pride in the accuracy of the submissions and strives to produce a high quality text book. I understand that Dr. Wilson is completing the 6th edition but no word as to when it will be released.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the new ICU nurse!!!
I have been a fan of Sylvia Price's Pathophysiology text since I first studied for the CCRN exam in 1982. I have bought periodic updated versions since that time and recommend it to all my preceptees and CCRN study group members. The clarity of her authors' explanations makes understanding the pathophysiology of conditions commonly seen in ICU very easy. I do not have enough words to express how highly I recommend this book to any nurse beginning a critical care career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Medical Billing
This book is ... very good for new medical billers. It is thorough and very good. Only drawback is the disk in the back needs certain Medisoft software to make it work. It is misleading to have the disk and not be able to use it unless you have the software .... Otherwise if you just want to read through it or take classes you will spend lots of time in the computer lab to get the disk to work. The book is very good and very thorough so I gave it 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars excelent
To make it short: this is a very good book on Pediatric care. It includes most info that you will need to work succesfully on the PICU floor. Mainly for nurses, but majority of the text can be of use for neonatal/pediatric respiratory therapists. With a little improvement and a hardbound cover this book deserves a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Pediatric Critical Care
This book has been extremely helpful in my practice as a PCCU nurse. It gives detailed information in an easy to read format for quick reference. I carry it with me always when I go to work. I highly recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars truly disappointed
I recently began working in a pediatric ICU. Although I had 9 years of pedi experience as a floor nurse, I knew I would need a solid reference to help in my transition to the many new procedures and medications I would need to learn. After obtaining this book, I was disappointed by what little it had to offer. I searched for some information on some very basic critical care issues (i.e. CVP) and found it woefully lacking. My only assumption is this text is written with the understanding that you own the larger more detailed book. If you are new to the critical enviroment and need basic, clear information, you may be better served with the larger more informative text.
