5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for introductory mental health nursing
We used this in my psych/mental health theory class. I really liked this book. It's written on a level that was easy enough to follow but still gave me a strong base to draw from in clinical. Also, because it had little vignettes throughout each chapter, I found that it didn't bore me to death like nursing textbooks often do. I also like how It included great info on both older meds (i.e. the ones that they will still be testing on for NCLEX) as well as newer meds that I actually saw on the floor.

The only thing that could have been better, was the index. When using this text as a reference I occasionally had a tough time locating information that I knew was in there, but couldn't seem to locate using the index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CGFNS - a breeze thru this tough exam
This book has a massive collection of questions covering a broad range of topics needed to answer the cgfns exam.
The CD which is part of this book has a nice program which has a random question generator from the various topics. Extremely helpful to evaluate your performance on the test.
If you can consistently get over 80% on these practice tests, you've cleared your cgfns test.
Note: In addition to this book you need to have supplemental study material too. The more the material the better your preparation for this exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars I pass the NCLEX the first time
I highly recommend this book esp. if you're out of college for more than 5 years because it would refresh all the knowledge you have learn in school. It really helped me analyze the questions and choose the correct answer. The CD rom was helpful too since it was similar with the actual CAT exam and it would give you alot of practice on how to take the NCLEX under pressure.Good Luck and I hope this book would also be your next bestfriend.

2-0 out of 5 stars Helpful practice book, but watch for a few things...
I used this book to study for my finals in nursing school. I noticed that on my final i came across a question very similiar(actually, identicle) to this book. My professor used 5 questions from this review book on the exam.

My problem with this book was a few things. The wording of questions were ackward. For example, "Impending hypoglycemia" measurement. If anyone knows the meaning to "impending" and what the value range is for hypoglycemia is would understand why there is a flaw in how the question and answer do not match up. If anyone thinks differently, let me know. I think the answer given is incorrect or in the least misleading--needlessly.
I recommend Mosby's NCLEX- RN made incredibly easy and Kaplan's NCLEX review instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Watch out!
I purchased this book to prepare myself for the NCLEX-RN and was very disappointed with the results. I took MANY of the practice tests on the CDROM and after completing them I would review the questions the computer said I had "missed" only to find that the computer was marking them as the correct answers when I reviewed them. The book says you must score 75% on their practice tests in order to pass boards, and all my results were in the 74-76% range, but with many of the "incorrect" answers ending up being "correct" it did not help me do anything except be very stressed out! I took the Mosby's online practice and scored in the 94th percentile--a more true reflexion of my abilities--I passed boards without any problem, but no thanks to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reviewer!
this book is not for nclex only. this book can be used by any nursing student to review important topic discussed in school.

the cd is great!!! but why not put more of those questions in the book on the cd? ... Read more

Nurse as Educator: Principles of teaching and learning for nursing practice 2nd ed. by Susan B. Bastable
Fifteen chapters are divided into three parts: 1. perspectives on teaching and learning, 2. characteristics of the learner, and 3. techniques and strategies for teaching and learning. The book deals with theory and application. The second edition has an increased emphasis on the teacher as facilitator, shift from teaching the ill to promotion of health and prevention of disease. A chapter about technology has been added. Each chapter starts with chapter highlights, key terms, and objectives and ends with a summary, review questions, and references. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
I am also a first year nursing student and the first fundamentals book we used was so useless and hard to read I hated doing my homework. However, this book is so easy to understand and use, especially with the study guide which is also wonderful. I would not trade using any other book for this one. Trust me, you'll really understand what is being talked about.

3-0 out of 5 stars Content good...Format sucks
As a first year nursing student I thought this book was informative. I also thought this book tried too hard to present the info. in a concise manner. There were charts everywhere! I found the "helpful" charts to be distracting and drew attention away from the important information. I disliked having to look for the case study answers on line. It was difficult to login to their website and annoying to have to do so. Good Luck to future students who have to use this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good text for allied health and nursing students.
This is an excellent introduction to health care ethics. Covers theory and principles and ethical decision-making in the first several chapters and the major issues in health care in the remaining chapters. The writers don't bog down in discussing these issues as do some current texts in bioethics. Very readable. Does not have cases so if one uses this for instruction a book with a collection of cases is needed (i.e. Cases Studies in Allied Health Ethics by Veatch and Flack). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best I've seen
I'm a medical student whose school uses Bates' guide... I must say that this book FAR surpasses Bates. Not only is the information complete, but the pictures and "jewels" it presents are wonderful. This is also better than the Schwartz (which I own also). If I could choose all over which book to buy of the three, I would DEFINITELY buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
Excellent book, superior picture and graphic, good explanations, If you want to buy an excellent book of semiology...here it is. The CD bring usefull information, and friendly interface for students. A recomendation for the Authors could be insert video of each maneuver and sign, as well as clinical interviews of each capital syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Legendary Text in Physical Examination
More explanations, more detail, even more color than its rival (Bates). However, lacking in the area of psychiatric diagnosis, which would have been immensely useful in the evaluation of "Robin of Lockslay"...

5-0 out of 5 stars An adequate book of semiology for the North American reality
It is a great guide for physical examination for students and physicians. It presents a great deal of knowledge of the diseases existing in the developed american countries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Drug Guide!
I am a 3rd semester nursing student and I absolutely love this drug guide. I have used others before, but this one is the best. It has the best IV drug administration info. It has side effects listed as the most life threatening in bold, and the most frequent in underlines. That makes it easy to wade through all of the possible side effects to the most likely and the most threatening that you may need to know for patient care and, of course, when getting quized by clinical instructors :) When my friends can't find a drug or a detail about administration they always ask for my book or my PDA (i have this version on my PDA also). This is the best drug book I have seen; it also has nursing diagnoses and great patient teaching instructions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Davis's Drug guide report from the field
Im currently a RN student and many of the students in my class including myself use this book. I've actually used 3 different brands but this book stands above all. It lets the reader know important points about the drugs and does not confuse as some of the other books have done w/elaborate terminology. Davis keeps it simple and its well designed. Software isn't bad as well but I find myself using the book more often when I look up the drugs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting out of date every day - Not a Mac CD
I use this in nursing school and am finding a new edition is needed. Many new drugs commonly used are not in this eighth edition. I also am disappointed that they advertise the CD rom as Windows or Mac - clearly not usable in the Macintosh. :(

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the only drug book you will need
I have bought four different drug books since I began nursing school ...I sold the other three after I started using this one.
The disc is great for finding information for clinicals....and plan on keeping it after I graduate....well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this with you while administering meds to clients.
I teach nursing, and this DAVIS Drug Guide for Nurses is a must-have for all my students as they learn how to professionally administer medications to their clients.
All nurses should have a convenient system to use when the occasion arises that a nurse gives a medication that they are unfamilair with...I found that this DAVIS Guide is a quick and easy way to investigate the medication, it's indications, contraindications, nursing considerations and idiosyncrasies. Adverse reactions and normal dosing ranges are included for all medications .....
There is also caution advised to prevent medication errors....near misses are always preferred over real errors any day. How the heart skips a beat whenever that happens!
Nurses NEVER intend to make errors, and this book gives a cautionary tale in the beginning - to help professionals understand the grave seriousness of it all.
It's never too late to buy an informative drug guide, and here I recommend this book to ALL --- professional or not.
It's cruicial that all people who give medications or take them understand the actions of the medications comprehensively.
The more one knows the more choices they posses.
Before you pass the meds,
pass the DAVIS Drug Guide! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Never has so much said so little
This thing is a beast! It's difficult to read - the space between lines is so short, you feel like you're reading the same line over and over. The material repeats itself quite often - so much that the book could use some editing. I guess the authors get paid by the word. As a nursing student in an ADN program with absolutely no interest in the field of Pediatric Nursing, I resented having to lug this turkey around. I'm sure it's treasured by pediatric nurses and educators world wide, but if you've got to buy it, get a used one or an older edition. No need in breaking your bank account and your back!

5-0 out of 5 stars 7th Edition worth its weight in gold
Whaley and Wongs updated bible for paediatric nurses is essential reading now it has gone in to its seventh edition, Those who had the 1995 version will already be familiar with the fully comprehensive care plans and evidence based practice rigorously detailed within the book, but 2002's new edition not only updates knowledge but also improves clarity using excellent illustrations, and also includes an entire new chapter regarding community care- an issue at the forefront of modern nursing. This is a core text for all students and qualified nurses alike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but a bit basic
Mager's book provides some great foundational information on performance problems in the workplace. However, it seems a bit basic and common sensical when compared to the new books being written on the subject. I looked to this third edition thinking it would have more up-to-date information and revisions and was disappointed when I found that it did not.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you are into carrots and sticks... this is for you
This book has some wonderful ideas contained between its covers. The underlying assumption is that people are either motivated by rewards or punishment. There is a flowchart that helps you understand how to influence (read manipulate) people into behaving as you want them to.

The author gives many examples that make it seem as though his method of dealing with people is the most effective one. There are more aspects to leadership and management than he describes, and I can just picture in my mind's eye a person with no people skills trying to apply these techniques to his work. Then I get scared.

I would suggest reading books by more principle centered authors first - such as the various Covey books or other ones. If you are just looking for a new perspective, buy it. If you are frustrated because nobody seems to listen to you and you want to manipulate them all to do your bidding - please quit your job. This book wont help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for trainers
This book will change how you deal with performance problems of all sorts. Mager's step-by-step approach can be used in a broad range of situations, including team environments, manager/employee relationships, production situations, and even with your children! He makes it easy to see the logical solution that may currently be evading you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Sure That Training Is Your Number One Solution
Before you begin your discussion of performance problems by talking about training, you need to read this common sense book by Robert F. Mager and Peter Pipe. Following a systematic algorithm, you will learn to identify your performance problem, decide how critical the problem is, and identify the underlying reasons for the existence of your problem. Problems can be a result of invisible expectations (you didn't tell me how) or what the book calls "upside-down consequences" (doing it right is not as rewarding as doing it wrong).

Using many common sense examples, this book demonstrates that solutions other than training can solve your performance problems. In fact, you will discover that training may be a useless solution that will not solve your problem. Until you take apart the expected performance, look at the component parts, and identify why the performer chooses the wrong action, you cannot correct the performance deficiency.

Training as a possible solution does not appear until the middle of the book. Training is needed because a person has never performed as required and does not know how to perform as required. Training can also help when skills have decayed over time and training is needed to refresh them.

When you look at human performance, you need to remember that people will usually follow the path of least resistance. They do not choose wrong performance because they want to be wrong. They choose the wrong performance because it is the best solution for them. Mager and Pipe uncover why people make these choices and offer you a way to achieve the correct performance you seek.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic in performance analysis by the guru himself.
Bob Mager's lucid and practical book is a joy to read and use. I've required it for some time in my university courses on human performance in the workplace. My students even like the pricetag. No better value on the market! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly boring!
This entire series of "Incredibly Easy" books should be called "Incredibly Boring"! I've found all of them to be useless in keeping my attention or in helping me to remember. There is nothing memorable about anything in these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!!!!
This book helped me get through Pathophysiology. When you are learning about Fluids and Electrolytes, it really breaks it down into an easier to understand format. The quizzes and questions at the end of the book are also helpful. They do not only give you the correct answer but also tell you why it is correct. I would reccommend it to any nursing student, even if your program does not require Patho!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for nursing students!
This book is a must have for nursing students! Makes fluid and electrolytes easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Nursing Students!
I read this book over my summer break from nursing school and found it very helpful. It is easy to follow and you will be amazed at how interesting fluids and electrolytes can be! It made everything "click"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I am an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and ACLS Experienced Provider (ACLS-EP) Instructor and use this book in my classes. It is a great book to teach electrolytes, and is very clear. I am also an Excelsior student, and this book was essential for Nursing Concepts 2 test. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this book if you plan on taking NC2 or ACLS-EP. If you are ever confused about why you have electrolytes infusing, this book is clear and to the point. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic model in use world-wide
I'm surprised that there are not more reviews of this classic. From Novice to Expert is now THE model used to describe development in nursing and is the basis for probably 99% of all the clinical ladders in existence. Benner deserves our undying gratitude for finding a way to describe what it is that nurses really DO. Her following books based on this one are also excellent. In the late '80s and '90s she used her model to describe critical care nursing, and is now using her model to describe expert nursing practice in long term care. In graduate school, so many of the models I was required to learn had nothing to do with actual nursing practice--because they were created by PhD nurse educators who had not practiced for years or decades. For her work, Benner went to bedside nurses actually doing nursing, and built her model upon what she discovered there and from them. As a clinical nurse specialist, I use this model everyday when working with other nurses and with patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic work worth revisiting often.
Published in 1984 and still in print! Many of us knew from first reading that this book was destined to be a classic. The work provides two valuable contributions. Actual patient care experiences reported by 1200 respected nurses were described and analyzed. What nurses actually do is presented in clear discussion using commonly understood language. The Dreyfus Model of Skill Acquisistion is then applied to this analysis of expert nursing practice. This view into the "mystery"of nursing contributes to understanding and appreciation of the unique role of this essential healthcare discipline. It is likely to be valuable to physicians, administrators and others whose work is interdependent with that of nurses as well as speaking directly to nurses. Understanding a skill acquisition process as it applies to the profession of nursing has direct relevancy both for basic educational preparation and for practice models and work assignments. Many applications, articles and books have and continue to grow from this original work. However, I still find repeated reasons to return to this primary source and the book continues to hold a special place on my desk top. ... Read more

This book is different from other NP review books in that it blends information with sample questions. A great way to organize study and help you to pass!

3-0 out of 5 stars Different from the other review books
The book's layout provides a uniquely different way of studying for the exam compared to most other review books and courses.I would not recommend this book as the primary source of review, because it does not provide indepth content review as I had expected.
