5-0 out of 5 stars More than a basic health care reference.
I have had this book in the house for 23 years. It was the best choice I could have made as the mother of a sick child. I needed somthing a lot better than a general health book because I needed better quality information on a moments notice to help me keep this child alive. It helped me understand things quicker so I could work more efficiently with the health care professionals that helped us. This worked for me because the information was quick, concise, and accurate. My child is very healthy today and is asking for his own copy. That's why I'm out here shopping today...for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lippincott Manual of Nursing Practice
This book could literally be "a student nurses' bible for writing diagnosis and intervention". It is concise and very practical. I would be totally lost without one. It is a self taught manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun-to-read, Easy-to-understand Format!!
This book is very helpful when reviewing specific areas of weakness and for nursing knowledge in general. It helps you to make the most of your precious time when reviewing. It has quick cheat sheets to review areas that aren't as weak and it also has chapters for more detailed reviews of areas of weakness. There are plenty of questions to practice on in written format and on the CD-Rom with rationalizations included. The illustrations and neat little memory joggers, make reviewing for the NCLEX-RN more fun. I also think nursing students will find this helpful for the exams while in school, because it helps break down the information in an easy-to-understand and better to remember format.

The only downfall is that it doesn't have as much information on test taking strategies, it has some, but not as much as I think is necessary for making the critical-thinking decisions that are required when taking the NCLEX-RN test. Therefore, I highly recommend that you also get the Kaplan NCLEX-RN book, which covers all the test taking stratgies needed to make the critical decisions, which are on the NCLEX-RN test. The two books in combination helped me to pass the NCLEX-RN exam the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up For NCLEX-RN Review
This is a really useful and informative book which covers all aspects of subjects needed to pass the NCLEX-RN. It is user friendly, well formatted and the CD-ROM with +++ practice questions is a bonus!

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome review!!

4-0 out of 5 stars medical- Surgical review book
I have used this book all semester and plan to use it for next semester also. It is very well written. It is alot easier to understand then a textbook. I found it easier to study from this book, along with my notes, then reading a text book. It breaks down everything for you into a outline. Good book I've already ordered another review book for Pediatrics

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth their weight in gold!
This book and the rest in the series(they have all you need for BSN program) were irreplacable to me in my BSN studies. I just graduated one of the hardest programs in the state with a 3.642 GPA. The Lippincott series really made a difference. I didn't have them my first semester, but second semester with the books my grades jumped! The professors were not familiar with the books but I followed along in class with them page by page. A great investment and now a perfect reference tool ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars So-So Text
As an RN with 28 years experience, I was disappointed with the quality of Ms. Friedman's writing. She is overly repetitive with descriptive materials, tends to ramble on, uses slang terms occassionally, and reveals personal bias. There is no place in nursing for unprofessional terms or bias against groups based on religious differences or lack of religious orientation. Positive qualities of this book include adaptation stategies for use in applying nursing theories to families and making appropriate NANDA diagnoses. The Friedman Model is included and well illustrated. Several tables are included and are helpful to clarify wordy text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Drink More Coffee!
I am a fourth year BSN student. This book was our assigned text for our family class. I felt the book was to wordy on explanations. Points were not clearly established. They were merely tossed around comparing and contrasting one research study versus another. I would get so lost in the theoretical views from numerous positions that I would literally fall asleep reading this book. Surely, there is a more palatable undergraduate book on family theory?

This comprehensive and up-to-date handbook offers clinically-relevant information on laboratory and diagnostic tests. Test entries are organized alphabetically for quick reference and are presented in a consistent format, which allows for concise, yet detailed coverage. Each test entry includes: alternate or abbreviated test names; type of test; normal findings; possible critical values; test explanation and related physiology; contraindications; potential complications; interfering factors; procedure and patient care (before, during, and after); and abnormal findings. 5-0 out of 5 stars Picky Book buyer loves it!!
I felt that this was the most complete and EASY to use Lab book for nursing students, such as I. It even suggests what abnormals can mean clinically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
Honestly, I don't give many books 5 stars, nor do I give many glowing reviews, but Mosby really did an outstanding job putting this book together. The format is friendly, the data is accurate, and the tests are all relevant in hospital or clinical settings. Great book and an invaluable reference for nurses and laboratorians alike!

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Handy Reference
This is a reference we use on our psych unit because it provides information in a quick and easy-to-use format for nurses who do not deal with medical issues on a regular basis. It has logical cross references and recommendations for further investigation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST own!
I'm a 6th year medical student and I was looking for a book that could give me a quick, easy, yet complete method of evaluating laboratory exams right on the spot. With this book I got that and much, much more. Right from the book's size and weight to the complete and easy to read information, this book is done just right (it even comes with a waterproof cover to prevent the book from being easily damaged). It includes basic stuff like blood test and urinalysis to more advanced stuff including arthroscopy and mediastinoscopy. The book has it all. For each entry you get: type of test, normal findings (includes values), test explanation and related physiology, interfering factors, procedure and patient care, abnormal findings (lists the diseases that must be suspected); and in the cases that apply gives contraindications, and home care considerations. It has your basic index, plus a list of tests by type (eg. urine tests) and another list of tests by body system (eg. nervous system). All in all, the decision is a no-brainer, this book is a MUST for any medical student or physician. A 5-star rating is an understatement. Highly recommended! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I have found this book very valuable. I am a medical student and my Spanish is intermediate. I can communicate well on a conversational level, but medical terms are a whole different story. This book is excellent. Not only do I use it to look up the proper medical terms, but it also provides examples of more common terms used to describe conditions that are easier for patients to understand. What has been very helpful is a systems-based guide to interview questions. For example it provides you with a list of common questions you would ask a patient who complains of abdominal pain. It also provides a concise review of verb tenses and noun declension. My copy of this book is very well loved. It has seen me through four years of employment in the ER and four years of medical school. Perhaps the mentally challenged reviewers who gave this book poor reviews should learn to read before attempting to learn a different language :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Medical Spanish Dictionary I've Used
In the past 10 years, as a medical interpreter and health care professional, I've tried at least half a dozen medical Spanish dictionaries and this is by far the best, most accurate, and most comprehensive. It has much more of the technical vocabulary one would use in conversation with other health care providers than any other, yet still has the words that patients understand. I highly recommend it, though it may be a bit overwhelming for beginners -- it's not as useful as a "quick reference" for someone who doesn't speak a lot of Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say what?!
I have to wonder which book the negative reviewers are reviewing.

As to the complaint that there is no pronunciation guide to English or Spanish, for example, the first page of the Spanish side starts with a description of the Spanish alphabet followed by a pronunciation guide to Spanish; corresponding features appear on the very first page of the English side, too.

I am a professional Spanish translator, and I refer to this book for specialized medical terms when I translate. I also make use of the abbreviation conversion table (which, unfortunately, is alphabetized only in English alphabetical order, making it hard to go from a Spanish abbreviation to an English one), and the helpful conversion tables for roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

The main fault with this book is that there could be more. If you are looking for diseases, conditions, or symptoms, or even sample examination interview questions (organized by topic in an appendix), it's great! But if you are looking for the translations for medicines, you can pretty much forget about finding them (acetaminophen? amoxicillin? pseudoephedrine? hardly uncommon medicines, but not in here), but perhaps that is a subject worthy of its own separate volume. Still, if you are wanting help talking to your Spanish-speaking patients about their illnesses, conditions, and treatments--and assuming that you have no reason to use the Spanish words for the medicines anyway--this is an excellent resource to buy, to get familiar with, and to have on hand. I always recommend it to any doctor, nurse, or paramedic who asks me for a good Spanish medical reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Translators
The contents of the dictionary are very inadequate for translators who need to know the English term for the Spanish one and only serves as a mediocre tool for Health Care Professionals who want to learn a few Spanish words here and there. It is not at all comprehensive. I give it one star because the design of the book cover is attractive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding caused by book description
This dictionary does not include any guide for pronunciation of English or Spanish words. A proper dictionary should include some phoenetic guide to the pronunciation. The review incorrectly implies this is included ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars In defense of victimhood...
I straddle the fence between faith in allopathic (Western) medicine and a more wholistic approach. So I bought this book eagerly. I have been both intrigued and disappointed.

I appreciate the hard scientific information: how our bodies work, how various procedures and substances affect them, the latest developments in health care. I also appreciated reading that things that I have long considered normal, like pregnancy, are indeed natural processes and not diseases or disabilities. But I didn't appreciate hearing that most medical problems are rooted in dysfunctional emotional states. While I think that there are some conditions that are amenable to a psychotherapeutic approach, I KNOW that the hideous cramps I suffered all through my young girlhood, from age 11 to about 27, were a lot more than merely a function of my ambivalence toward my burgeoning womanhood. And while this isn't my problem, the idea that an enlightened female doctor would tell an infertile woman that her infertility is caused by her own psychological state vis a vis parenthood is absolutely horrifying. As is the idea that grapefruit-sized ovarian cysts can be reduced by changing the way we regard ourselves in a patriarchal society. And the idea that most of our plumbing problems are rooted in our victimhood reverses all the gains in strength and self-confidence we've made in the past 30 years. And the less said about her friend the "medical intuitive," the better!

I recommend this book only to women who are grounded, strong in their sense of self as non-victims, and well-versed enough in medical knowledge to winnow through the junk and glean the good medical information. For the rest, I think it could be quite damaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars at last, a book focused on all aspects of women's health
what a brilliant, sensitive, informed, and thoughtful way to approach health issues particular to women. (Dartmouth Medical School-educated, if I recall correctly) Dr. Northrup truly combines the "Western" with the more "Eastern" approach to health, and she does it in a very balanced way.

this book covers quite a bit of ground: from the special relationship between the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle to birth/miscarriage to menopause. it is not a book advocating one way or another, but rather explores and considers how a woman's health is affected by many things, both from within and without the body. she also talks about many things a woman can do to improve her health, in accessible and realistic terms.

I found especially useful the chapter on birth stories. Her discussion of labor and delivery allowed me to understand birthing on a deeper level, beyond the "pain," and provided me with more confidence and trust in my body and in the process of giving birth (which I was able to do without any medication). I loved the "wave" metaphor, that each contraction can be experienced as a wave that one dives under (mentally) to avoid being thrashed around.

lastly, this is one of a very few number of books that celebrates women and womanhood. just the title itself tells you so much. i think every woman would do well to have it on her shelf or next to her bed to consult from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for every woman
I got this book as a gift 2 years ago and it has been an amazing discovery of so many things about me!
This book speaks to me as I am sure it will for every woman.
A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book will teach you to think of your health and your whole self in a new way. Revolutionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Edged Sword
This is the first major book to look at women's health systematically from a holistic perspective. My sister, an ND, gave this to me many years ago. I have referred to it many times since I first read it and my friends always want to borrow it. It's a great reference.

If you are looking purely for an objective scientific book on women's health then don't bother with this. There is a lot of scientific info but there's a lot of "non-science" as well. Read the lowest reviews first which fairly summarise the weaknesses of this text. I agree that this book comes across as flaky in places however it is a breakthrough work in terms of systematically exploring the integration of mind and body and the effect of this balance on health.

While I applaud the effort to make people realise how their mental state can impact their health, the other side of that sword is that women feel they are to blame for having the "wrong state of mind" which leads to poor health.

For instance in one story a woman became infertile because, in the author's opinion, she didn't feel her husband was the right person to have children with. If you're pragmatic you can hear this story, consider if it applies to you and discard it if it doesn't fit. But some women could develop a guilt complex over something that is upsetting on its own without the added blame.

Ultimately, the problem with this kind of thinking is that it leads to a vicious worry cycle: you worry that you might not have the right state of mind for good health... and then you worry that your worrying risks your health further! But to ignore this altogether also poses risk. Stress does cause disease and an integrated approach to health cannot exist without considering a person's state of mind.

Because this book provides significant medical information, the reader could be lead into taking all the author's opinions as fact. Take the opinions as just that and you will find the book enjoyable. It is informative and thought provoking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathophysiology Made EASIER!
The title is a lie. I don't think pathophysiology could ever be incredibly easy, and if it could be this book falls short of the mark. But for the sake of this review, I'm going to lower the mark. Pathophysiology will always require hard work to master, but oftentimes mastery is hindered by the presentation of information. It is in the presentation of pertinent information that Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy! excels.
The book contains 13 chapters. Each one focuses on a body system and the disorders affecting that system with additional chapters affecting systemic problems and issues like genetics, immunological disorders, infections, and cancer. The book cannot be and is not exhaustive, but that is not its purpose. The book covers the most often seen and most often discussed diseases. Each, for the most part, is presented in an easy-to-digest manner. Rather than use paragraphs, bullet points, summary graphics, and short sentences highlight the pertinent information. Finally the disease sections end with summaries of the test results that would indicate a particluar malady along with the current common treatments of that disease. There are also many case studies provided to reinforce learning in a practical way.
On the downside, I felt that the some of the cartoons were distracting and irreverent, especially in the context of some of the diseases being discussed. I understand the desire to make learning the diseases fun, but personally I think that irreverence to disease and the diseased may tend to make for unsympathetic care givers. Nevertheless, the book is useful for students of pathophysiology, especially those being exposed to the field for the first time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What a help!
WOW this book has everything. I love how it gives a condensed yet comprehensive review of each area of nursing. I've been a LPN for 16 yrs and am now back in college to get my RN. This book is a perfect refresher and learning source and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best NCLEX Review and Question book
I am part of a study group and we have 9 different NCLEX Review books between us.

This DelMar book is the best NCLEX review book of the 9 that we have.

Some features that make this book better than others are:

1. The book is broken down into sections with review and summary information, then questions specific to that section. Most other books just have practice tests with questions from all the different areas and you have to crawl through them to find the ones relevant to the subject you're studying.

2. This book also has comprehensive tests

3. This book has excellent test taking advice

4. This book has outstanding rationale for the questions offered. Some other books only list the correct answer and why that's the correct answer, but this book also explains why the incorrect answers are not correct. (Sounds confusing, but basically it tells you not only why answer "3" is correct, but tells you why "1", "2", and "4" are not correct.)

5. This book has a guarantee that you will pass the NCLEX after using their book and practice tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed
I purchased this book along with the Kaplan NCLEX-RN review and thought both were great. This is the best book that I have found for content. I felt so prepared to take the NCLEX that I took it two weeks after I graduated and passed with the minimum number of questions. I recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book that helps me to pass RN Exam
I read this book twice, and it was really helpful for me, especially:
-Drug and nursing implications unit
-Very good easy reading materials
-8 very good review tests.

I recommend it to everybody.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Students, But.......
This is very nice for Nursing students (I am a student so I can't say if an RN working would like it or not) but.....if you buy the Med/Surg book from this company, a CD comes with it and the CD contains the info in this book. My suggestion, if you need both, would be to get the Med/Surg book.

Also, the edition comes with a Disk not a CD and it is not as nice as the CD. ... Read more
