5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Approaches to Leadership Theory
I have reviewed many excellent texts on nursing leadership and management, but I have never found one that so clearly outlined the theory and then provided cutting edge practical tools for distinctive problems. I had utilized a more simplistic text for community college registered nurse students, but when I presented one of the practical tools described in this book to my students, they said now this is really worthwhile learning. They liked the decision making tool that I described to them. The book should be a must for the bachelor's prepared nurse. I personally feel managers can utilize this book to increase their leadership skills. I personally am buying my own copy for my current management job. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this book
This is an excellent care plan book. It takes you through the possible goals, interventions, and rationales for each diagnosis and even gives suggestions for assessment data to collect. It also has a small appendix with nursing diagnoses by illness. Every illness is not listed in this section, but a lot are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Goal Achieved!
A Case Manager's Study Guide: Preparing for Certification works well for the motivated self learner. The information contained in the book is thorough and concise. I felt prepared for the test after I completed my studies. The test questions, with the added benefit of having them on a CD-ROM, provide the learner with an excellent opportunity to prepare for the certification test environment, especially if you have test anxiety! I just received notice that I met the qualifications and passed the examination to be qualified as a Certified Case Manager(CCM).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Concise Review for the CCM examination
The Case Manager's Study Guide with CD-ROM was the only reference book I used to prepare for the CCM exam. It is a very informative and concise manual which, unlike many books on the subject of Case Management currently on the market, is very easy to read and understand. The CD-ROM was especially helpful in preparing for the certification exam. And, I passed the examination with flying colors! Even now, I keep the manual in the office to use as a reference guide when I need clarification on certain issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars CCM Study Guide
This book was my primary study guide and I passed the exam the first time I took it. I found the book helpful and would recommend it.

Designed to bring you from your current level of knowledge to a fully advanced ECG interpreter, this book features 200+ full-size, real- life ECGs accompanied by thorough explanations and analyses. Presented in a clear and casual writing style, the book's leveled approach takes a complex subject and makes it simple. Whether you are an EMT, nurse, medical student, or physician wanting to learn or brush up on your knowledge of electrocardiography, this text will meet your needs. Containing more than 200 ECG strips, 12-Lead ECG is designed to be accessed by three different levels of readers--beginner, intermediate, and advanced--and is designed to grow with you as your knowledge of electrocardiography progresses. The text has been created to be continuously useful during your development and is intended to be read and reread as you advance in your knowledge and comfort level with the material. By rereading the material at increasingly advanced levels, you will get more out of the material and retain it with greater use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent 12 Lead ECG Book for All Levels
This is by far the best book for learning and refining 12-lead ECG interpretation skills that I have read. The material is structured so that it can be used as a classroom text or as a self-guided teaching tool. Within the book, Garcia and Holtz divide the material into three clearly marked levels from a basic review of cardiac physiology through an advanced level of ECG interpretation. The text is written in an easy-to-read, conversational style and the graphics and ECG tracings are some of the best I've ever seen in this kind of book. On top of this, Garcia and Holtz have included plenty of useful diagnostic pearls throughout each chapter, making this a highly readable and educational book. I use levels one and two to teach my paramedic students the fundamentals of 12-lead ECG interpretation. I also recommend Garcia and Miller's "Arrhythmia Recognition: The Art of Interpretation" (ISBN 0763722464) as a rhythm interpretation reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide
This book is hands down the best book on EKG interpretation I've ever used. Garcia and Holtz start you from the basics and go no where but up to the top, all the while drilling in the concepts with repeat practice EKGs. This is what makes it extremely practical - you'll be able to put the information you learn to use right away. If you're just starting to learn about EKGs, this book is well worth the cost

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best!
I have been teaching 12 Lead ECGs and Acute Coronary Syndromes for several years now, and I have read just about every book available on the topic. I can tell you without a doubt that this is the most comprehensive 12 lead book I have ever owned. Garcia and Holtz have truly done a service to the medical communtiy by compiling this book.

I love the way this book is arranged. Part I of the book (about 70 pages) deals with anatomy, physiology, basic rhythm interpretation, and the nuts and bolts of electrocardiography. Part II of the book (the remaining 600 plus pages) deals with the art of interpretation. Garcia and Holtz are innovative. Explanations are color coded into various levels of difficulty. If you are new to 12 leads, you can stick to level 1 explanations (blue). If you're getting the hang of things, or have some experience already, you can take it to level 2 (green). Or, if you're at the physician level, you're sure to enjoy the level III commentary (orange). This makes _12-Lead ECG The Art of Interpretation_ the gift that keeps on giving as you become more proficient at 12 lead interpretation.

If you're only interested in identifying acute myocardial infarction, then you might want to consider Tim Phalen's book. It will tell you everything you need to know. However, if you really want to learn how to read a 12 lead ECG, then this book is definitely for you. Whether it's atrial enlargemt, a depolarization abnormality, drug effect, ischemia, or just about anything else you can think of, you're likely to find several outstanding examples in this book.

It's well worth the investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone
This is an excellent book. It is well laid out and easy to follow with enough information to satisfy most potential users, regardless of knowledge base.
I highly recommend this book if you are serious about learning 12 lead interpritation. If you are strictly looking for rhythm interpritation, there are better.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best EKG books available, esp for med students
This book is fantastic, and in my opinion is of a much better quality and more user-friendly than the Dubin text ("Rapid Interpretation of EKGs") that is so widely lauded. For a start, Dr. Garcia and Mr. Holtz have a wonderful, friendly, amusing, down-to-earth style of writing that is without the pretense so common among books geared to medical professionals. The three level system is great for prioritizing the material into what you absolutely must know versus things that are nice to know but can wait. Level 1 breaks down the basics into the true basics, assumes you know nothing (or almost nothing, which is a significant number of 3rd year med students like me! After cramming so much for so long, there's bound to be brain leakage...) Levels 2 and 3 are great, but are probably beyond the scope of anything a med student is likely to see on a shelf exam or even the USMLE Steps 1 and 2. Could be wrong, but that's the impression I have so far. If you have the time, it certainly can't hurt. At any rate, this book is a very easy read, full of nice big pictures and pretty colors (great for tired eyes and visual learners in general), and is perhaps the only book I've read on the subject thus far that has actually stuck with me! At the very least, make this a strongly recommended buy to your school's librarian, but you'll probably want a copy for yourself as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Handbook
The only reason this book is a four star and not a five is that you do have to learn to use it. It is especially beneficial when dealing with collaborative problems. The larger book was helpful in understanding the whole process of nursing diagnosis and what it is meant to convey; the handbook will suffice for most nursing care plans, rationale tends to be a student pre-occupation. The organization is alphabetic, very clear for me once you know the few nursing diagnoses that are NANDA approved. Carpenito gives clear assessment data that must be present to support the diagnosis and interventions that make sense to select from as appropriate to your patient. I have used the book since the 7th edition and own the eighth and ninth. The tenth is available and I look forward to seeing the changes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
The only GOOD thing about this is that its small. Its totally confusing to follow AND there isnt any rationals. Make sure you get something with rationals. Makes charting easier

2-0 out of 5 stars This tradition stinks...
I love being a nursing student. I hate that OSU requires Carpenito as a nursing diagnosis reference for every nursing student to pass through its doors. I find nursing diagnoses a pain anyway, but Carpenito seems to go out of her way to make an already difficult process even worse. Talk to your instructors; tell them that there are other references out there!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is frustrating and time consuming!
This book and it's larger ( more complete) version are just a big frustrating mess! The organization is lacking. I agree with the other reviewers, THIS IS NOT USER FRIENDLY. It is very time consuming to use these books. The spiral bound is lacking in info and the larger text is just confusing--- too many references to other places in the book without help given to find these places. Too much work! My school picked Carpenito as well, not sure why!~ Betty Ackley is much more helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book should win an award!!LOL!
This book REALLY should receive some recognition---for being probably the WORST nursing diagnosis book I have ever seen!As stated above, this book is REQUIRED by Excelsior College for the CPNE exam----much to the bewilderment and anguish of the Excelsior students who have to work with it.Is it possible that Excelsior is completely unaware that there are MANY better books of this kind out there?I think it would be virtually impossible to find one that was more confusing, less helpful and less user friendly. It seems like a cruel joke that this book is imposed on Excelsior students when superior books which would better meet students needs are available.Ms. Carpenito should do everyone a favor and stop writing these books---many students(myself included) would be eternally grateful!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
The new edition of the AWHONN Core Curriculum for Maternal Newborn Nursing is excellent. It allows the staff on the units to have the latest information on clinical practice, guidelines for care, and patient education. The only thing more would be to have an appendix of common OB/Newborn procedures and protocols/guidelines and much of the annual hospital activities revolving around the hospital manuals could be greatly eased. We have tabbed the Clinical Practice segments for easy reference on the units.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
Okay, maybe it's just because our nursing director helped write the book, but we all love it. The questions at the end of chapter are theory based questions that are very similar to the NCLEX. Our school has a 98% pass rate on the NCLEX and we owe a lot of it to the practice in answering questions in this book and the study guide for this book. I would highly recommend this book even if you don't need it for your school. At least get it from the library for the questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars required text for nursing class
The information in the book is scattered throughout, making studying difficult. Critical thinking was not encouraged and nursing diagnosis was not included in each discussion area.I would not recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Required text for New Zealand Nursing school
This book was actually a required text for my course. So far I am finding it really helpful in learning the basics of nursing such as taking Blood Pressures. However, as I am from New Zealand and the book is published in America, some of the terminology is different. Also, the illustrations in the book are old and are the same ones that were used in earlier editions - I felt as if more modern illustrations could have been included although the illustrations serve their purpose. Overall, a fairly good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars nursing book review
I found that this book was very helpful in my quest to become a nurse. There were many pictures and charts throughout the book to make the information easier to retain. Another good quality to this book was that there were directions to performing a particular nursing skill and rationales to why a step was necessary. Overall I thought that this was an easy book to read and understand. ... Read more

Going back to work after having a baby? You don't have to wean your little one. In Nursing Mother, Working Mother: The Essential Guide for Breastfeeding and Staying Close to Your Baby After You Return to Work, Gale Pryor has written a nuts-and-bolts guide for nursing and working at the same time. Pryor breast-fed each of her two children while working full-time outside the home, and her experience and voice of reassurance informs this book. She makes a strong case for breast-feeding: not only is it good for your baby, but many working women find that it is the easiest way to care for their child, and for themselves. Early chapters cover breast-feeding basics. Later chapters focus on preparing to go back to work, instructions on pumping (equipment and positioning), how to manage life at home and at work, and how to cope if you "fall apart" when your baby is six months old (common among new mothers who work outside the home). The book describes a typical day of pumping and nursing for babies of various ages, how to combine nursing and formula feeding, and how to stop leaking breasts (discreetly press on your nipples with the back of your forearms or with your elbows). Appendices include a list of resources for nursing, working mothers and a sample proposal for pumping space. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
I read this a few weeks before I had to return to work. It really made me feel better about things because it discussed all the ways a working mother could still bond with the baby (ex: cosleeping). It helped ease the guilt a bit for me because I really didn't want to work, but financially had to.

It also discussed how some babies will nurse more at night when mom works which was good to know since that is what my son ended up doing. Although it is tiring, I at least understand why this occurs and I can feel good about the added bonding time with my son.

It is worth the read. Also as a side note: I have been successfully pumping at work and continuing to breastfeed at home (son is almost a year). You CAN do it! It is worth it! Check out LLL's website where they have a bulletin board for working, breastfeeding mothers! Also, read The Womenly Art of Breastfeeding by LLL. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for the breastfeeding, working mom
i wish i'd read this book when i had my first baby, then maybe i wouldn't have had to supplement w/ formula! what i like the best is when the author says that continuing to breastfeed is one of the best things a working mother can do for her child, because it sustains the mother-infant bond despite times spent apart. the book is so reassuring and encouraging that i feel less guilty about having to work outside the home. this book has all the details you need to know to successfully breastfeed even while working. having read this book, i feel motivated to advocate breastfeeding to every mother i know. the author goes beyond giving tips for breastfeeding while working to write about the importance of bonding w/ your baby, being well-rested, and other aspects of being a mother.

4-0 out of 5 stars REALLY HELPFUL
I'm back at work, and I read and re read this book every few days. Usually to remind myself why I do this. I didn't feel like it was co-sleeping propaganda. It described many tools to bonding with your child, and one of them (and you don't have to use it) is co-sleeping. This book tells you that it's the bonding that's important, not the method you use. This book continually tells you that you can do this. Just the support I needed!

2-0 out of 5 stars Co-Sleeping Propaganda
I purchased this book after the birth of my son, hoping for some insight into combining work and motherhood. There was some useful information, but most of the book made me feel inadequate for not co-sleeping with my child. The general message is that you will not be able to bond and maintain closeness with your child if you choose not to co-sleep. My son is now 5 months old and I continue breastfeeding, pumping and working fulltime and feel very good about our relationship. I wish the other reviews I read had been more upfront about this issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for reluctant working mother!
This is a marvellous book. It has all the necessary facts about breastfeeding in an accessible format so can be used as a general breastfeeding guide, even though it is a slimmer volume than generalised breastfeeding books.

I liked the emphasis on attachment parenting, and how it shows that there is a solution for someone who likes the ideas of attachment parenting and yet has to go back to work. Often the literature is divided into books that assume you really want to work, and breastfeeding and attachment parenting books that assume the mother can afford to be at home. It shows that it is possible to breastfeed long-term while working, and gives good advice on how to do it. I have been back at work 1.5 months and I found the way Gale Pryor outlined how to prepare to go back to work very helpful.

I am going to buy several copies now, to give to friends and to add to my midwife's library for expectant mothers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
If the armed forces uses it and bases their clinical practice guidelines on it, it's got to be good, right? It is. I use this book in nurse telephone triage for a military pediatric clinic with 2700 patients. The book is spiral bound and easy to flip pages, and the pages stay open to the topic you are using. Topics are alphabetized which saves time when searching for a certain topic. There is a very useful table of contents at the front. The home care instructions are straight forward and acceptable to our parents. It doesn't have all the topics you would need (that's what pediatricians are for), but tab topics you use most, add a drug book and a pediatrician, and you're ready to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive/user freindly telephone triage book.
When it came time to select a book to use as a guideline for triage assessment, I searched through 15 books and a couple of computerized systems. This book is the easiest to follow, without being too simplistic. The format is exceptional and key questions are clear, concise and still open-ended enough to prevent "leading" your patient. There are cross-references for each complaint, as well as home care measures for each ailment. The final points are the blank formatted pages for writing your own protocols, and tracking charts to complete QA. 5 stars hardly seem enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars The one book to have!
I have read and used several telephone triage books for our very busy department. This is the one book our staff uses first and most. The patient complaints are laid out by system, making the protocols quick to find and easy to follow. I recommend it to anyone!

4-0 out of 5 stars It's new good idea.
This is not comments of review. I'm a nurse in ER. I'm read some journals about telephone-triage. So I searched for something about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, direct and usefull
This book is exactly what I was looking for. I would like to contact the author and get authorization to translate it to Portuguese.
