Book Description

For 46 years Berry & Kohn's Operating Room Technique has been the text of choice for understanding basic surgical principles and techniques. It is commonly used as a text for either surgical technology or perioperative nursing courses or an educational reference for practicing surgical technologists, perioperative nurses, and in-service training for perioperative professionals. It covers the foundations of surgical techniques in a step-by-step format to enable the perioperative learner to effectively apply basic principles to practice, and focuses on the physiologic and psychologic needs of the patients to provide guidelines for planning and implementing comprehensive, individualized care. It also reviews the most commonly performed surgical procedures to help the reader see and apply surgical techniques and emphasizes teamwork among perioperative caregivers to encourage cooperation in attaining positive patient care outcomes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Instructor opinion
This year I have chosen the Berry & Kohn text. I think it is an excellent choice. I use this book in conjunction with Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist. Berry & Kohn is more extensive and includes more detail. However, I have not been able to find a text bank or instructor guide

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book for Surg tech
I am a Student studying to be a Surgical Technologist and this is one of my core books. It is not helpful at all. I purchased a much better surg tech book called Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist. This is a much better book. It is directly from the AST. Berry & Kohns is geared more towards Nursing. I wouldn't recommend Berry & Kohns.

1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book!!
I am a senior at Vincennes University majoring in Surgical Technology and this is the text our instructor chose to use this year while awaiting the publication of her own and everyone in our class agrees that this book does not have the capability to explain things in an organized manor. This text reads like greek to us. I don't recommend this text to anyone who is in or maybe considering going into Surgical Technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars There's no "con" to Berry and Kohn
I found this book indispensible in studying to become an operating room nurse. I have been a registered nurse for 25+ years and have not found a book more helpful than this in learning a new aspect of nursing. It shares tables, pictures, boxes of interesting notes and even websites and search engines to make learning more fun and interesting. Don't go into the operating room without it. This is no con! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST PRACTICE TO PASS!
When I studied for the NCLEX, this was the most effective book to use because practice practice practice is the best thing to do. With so many questions, separated by subject, you can work on your weak areas and always be learning from it. It's one thing to learn the material from an excerpt in a textbook, but this really tests your APPLIED knowledge. I used this with the NCLEX Review made incredibly easy and it was the best combination for steady studying. Good luck! This book was so helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me 3 years after graduation
I bought this book, hoping it would help me with the NCLEX-RN exam. I hadn't studied for over 3 years, and I wanted to get my lisence. I bought it, studied it, loved it. The questions built on one another so if you read the rationale of one it could help you find the right answer to a question later on. I got great improvement on my NCLEX exam with using this book. It comes highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars lippincot review rn book
I personally think that this is one of the best books outthere for any student who do not wish to sit twice for the RN N-clex exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my favorite NCLEX book!
I love this NCLEX book because it's good for getting ready for boards as well as I used it all through nursing school! It's divided into topic sections such as cardio or psych so you can look up what you need to focus on. I love the answers and rationals on the same page, no flipping back and forth from the page you're working on to the answer section. This book made me feel confident to take exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars NCLEX RN Questions and Answers Made Incredibly Easy!
This is an extremely comprehensive guide covering nearly every area of study for the NCLEX RN. The questions and answers as well as the rationales are all on the same page. This illiminates the need to continuously flip to the back of the book as in several other reviews. Five comprehensive tests of 75 questions each are found in the back of the book. This allows for plenty of practice and was especially helpful on the days immediately preceeding the exam. It is loaded with cartoons which give hints and words of encouragement but tend to become tedious after a while. This should not detract from the overall excellent review which the over 3000 questions provide though. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Health Standards
A MUST resource guide for all nurses who work in the Home Health industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best training manual for nurses ever written
I have always used this handbook to train new home care nurses. It's compact enough to fit into their nursing bag and tote along on admissions. Be sure to order one for each nurse and therapist or they will get into a tug of war over them

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers legal questions quickly
Home health regulations have always been lengthy and murky to the average nurse. This small but concise book gets to the bottom line clearly and quickly. Questions such as maximum hours of weekly coverage and homebound requirements are clearly discussed. An essential resource book for team teaching in a home health agency. A great car guide to the nurse making home visits. I have ordered this book 3 or 4 times over the last 10 years of home health nursing experience. Reach for this book first if you are a new home health nurse in a certified agency - you will not regret it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars New book with needed corrections
This is a wonderful text for students in the entry level of nursing. However, many skills listed in the text are missing information or have conflicting information from the hardcover text also published by Delmar. I have used this text for 2 entry level courses and both courses have noted missing, incomplete or inaccurate data that will need to be updated, corrected and/or assimilated to correspond with the Fundamentals text that is designed as a corresponding text with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars clinical skills resuscitation....
This tome of timely tips is in truth a fairly comprehensive textbook/clinical lab manual with detailed skills descriptions, including photos and illustrations. The anecdotal patient stories are a bit much (truth is always stranger than fiction, particularly the lady drowning in the instant quicksand of a punctured therapeutic sand bed...) but on the whole, this is a comprehensive clinical manual in a very readable format. Designed for the ADN 2-year, 3-year RN, or CNA/RN programs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!!
I bought this book, along with four others shortly before graduating nursing school and began my NCLEX study intensively with this book specifically. I wish I had started another one instead-since I am inclined to finish what I started and getting through this one is killing me. I would not recommend this book to my worst enemy. The situations are very well defined but the answer choices are vague. I found many, many contradictions in the rationale portion of the tests and plenty of typographical errors in which the correct/incorrect answer numbers were transposed in the rationale section (3 times within 200 questions at one point). One question gives the situation that a young patient awakes after being unconsious due to a car accident and has had an above the knee amputation while he was out cold. He asks what happened- what do you tell him: 1) what do you think happened? 2) you were in an accident 3) you lost your leg in an accident 4)You sound concerned; you'll remember more as you wake up. Okay--I chose number one (first step in the nursing process is to assess, right?) The book says that the correct answer is number three because it addresses the man's question honestly; the book also says that number two isn't the right answer because it is too blunt. Gee, and number three isn't blunt? I'd call it a slap in the face if anything. This type of thing is found throughout the book from beginning to end. Don't buy this book, it won't do anything for you but get your temper fired up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest
I bought this book because it's recommended by my SON to review for the NCLEX. What I don't like about it is the answer section where it tells you why an answer is incorrect. The editors are inconsistent with their rationales and many times their reasoning is pretty vague. For example, one answer tells you Play-Doh is an appropriate toy for a toddler and then 10 questions later it is dangerous because a toddler might eat it. There is a great deal of review questions and the CD is helpful as are the review sections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't the best preparation for the exam
While it certainly got my mind working, this book was of little help with the nursing exam. The exam I took focused much less on disease states and medications and much more on vague diagnostic questions. On the whole, it's not a bad book but be sure to speak with someone who has recently taken the test prior to using this or any other book for preparation. It'll give you a dose of reality and allow you to focus on questions that will actually be asked.

4-0 out of 5 stars All in all a good book
This book starts you off with a brief overview of the individual areas of nursing such as Med/Surg, Pediatrics, Psychology... for each section it has questions followed by a section of answers with rationales for the correct/incorrect answer. Once you have covered the material from the individual units the book has two comprehensive tests where you can put your knowledge to the test. This book includes a CD-Rom. The CD-Rom offers you the choice of a practice test and a tutorial. Both give you rationales for the correct/incorrect answers. All in all a good book. The only thing I would add would be questions about delegation.

Book Description

The splendor and beauty of a child’s growth and development in the womb--seen through unforgettable images made possible by revolutionary advances in visualization technology

What’s happening with the baby now?
All expectant parents ask this question throughout the exhilirating months of pregnancy.Fuzzy sonograms and doctor’s explanations can provide basic information, but through Alexander Tsiaras’ remarkable achievements in medical imaging technology, parents can see, for the first time, the awe-inspiring process of a new life unfolding, in stunning, vivid detail.

The milestones of pregnancy which before could only be described can now be witnessed:the heart’s first beats; the appearance of color in the eye; the emergence of toes and teeth; the brain and nervous system directing development; the first movement of tiny legs and arms; the first indications of gender; the wondrous symbiosis of mother and child; the symphony of the body’s systems coming into being and working in concert. The book tracks the development of a baby from the moment of conception, through the explosively complex early stages of development and the amazing stages of growth as the baby is nurtured by the mother, ending with the joy of birth.

All this is made possible by revolutions in two sciences. As biologists have decoded the molecular basis of life, computer scientists have developed non-invasive, three-dimensional techniques for visualizing the body.Alexander Tsiaras has been a pioneer in merging these explorations and discoveries. He has created a virtual camera studio that enables him to view a human body or any part of it individually, scan it, enlarge it, rotate it, adjust its transparency so that we can view inside a living being, and light it from any angle. The result is an ability to illuminate the unseen elements that make us who we are, and the miraculous images in From Conception to Birth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning
I just wanted to write my own review and say how absolutely amazing this book really is. It's not so scientific that it bored me nor is it just pictures- it's the perfect mix of information and pictures.
It clearly states that most of the pictures are not actual photographs, but a mix of pictures and art. Some of the reviewers are so bothered by this. I don't think the author is trying to trick anyone into thinking that these are actual photographs. The author is simply trying to let the reader better visualize the amazing process that occurs in a mothers' womb. Since it's almost impossible to get actual pictures of a fetus, this is the closest that we can get. They are still amazing picures. I look through it everyday and it makes me appreciate even more the miracle of birth and life. This is a must have book for all expecting mothers. It can also make a perfect gift for a mother-to-be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
After reading the article in Time Magazine, I purchased 'From Conception To Birth' for a friend of mine who'd just had a child. After flipping through the book, I bought a second copy for myself. It's truly an Awesome work. The pictures are mesmerizing. And, you don't have to have children to enjoy it. This is all of our story. How can anyone with two eyes and a heart not be moved by these incredible images.I really recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful coffee table book
If you are looking for a shower gift for an expectant couple, this would make a lovely gift. It's full of photos of the developing baby. It would also make a wonderful gift for a very excited set of grandparents! My husband and I had a copy of this book during my pregnancy and enjoyed it thoroughly. The writing is beautiful and the photos are amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up from a veteren mom
I am reviewing from a "hands on" opinion. I have gone through this process four times and I am currently beginning the journey of bringing a 5th child into the world.

I think this book is beautiful. I first saw it on Oprah, where everyone was raving about it. I had to go to the book store and take a peek. The pictures are beautiful. The book is somewhat similar to A Child Is Born, but each book offers its own unique stand point.

Since my first encounter with this book, I have seen it in OB/GYN waiting rooms. I even saw a copy in our hospital waiting room. I have read various good reviews. (even from PHD doctors) Regardless of the rave from doctors and the media, I found it to be quite impressive on my own. Life is one of the most amazing things. To see it visually, is just a marvel. I am so happy to see such detailed books on this beautiful process. I can't believe all that stuff goes on inside of me!!!

It's worth a look!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring book!
Pregnant couples will love this book, there are sections of the book that show exactly how big the baby is and what it looks like at different stages of development. I found myself referring to this book almost every day while I was pregnant. This is an excellent book to share with children. I also found the text fascinating. This book is not as in-depth as the book "A Child is Born", which is the classic "from-conception-to-birth" book. Though I prefer this book for it's format and because it is less graphic. I would recommend this book for anyone curious about the birth process and definately for anyone expecting a child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Doulas
This book should be on the recommended reading list for all doula training programs! In a clear, concise, and thoughtful way, Penny explains what makes labor progress, how to recognize labor progress, and how to help with labor progress. My copy is always in my birth bag. I have used it at several births for various reasons, and have always found it to be helpful, with reminders or even just to reaffirm that I've done everything possible. I recommend this book for anyone in the childbirth field and for expectant couples as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Birth professionals: Don't leave home without this book!
Every once in awhile, a book on childbirth comes along that is a standout. The Labor Progress Handbook is one of those books, but what else would one expect from Penny Simkin and Ruth Ancheta? The authors have produced a lucid, logical, beautifully organized, clearly written, bounteously illustrated, meticulously documented book that gives birth professionals a systematic, practical basis to prevent, diagnose, and treat poor progress in labor. Approaching dystocia holistically, the authors consider the effects of the woman's emotional state, her environment, and the impact of hospital or caregiver policies and attitudes in addition to the standard "powers, passage, passenger" explanation for labor progress. And they are woman centered: the laboring woman is the active agent in resolving difficulties, and the unacceptability of a recommendation always contraindicates its use. If you teach about labor, care for laboring women, or work as a doula or birth assistant, you should--no, must--read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book for anyone involved in childbirth!
This deceptively slim book is jam-packed with useful information that can be used by just about anyone involved in childbirth today. I have recommended it be added as a textbook to the midwifery program where I teach, and I am planning to purchase a copy for the nursing station of the hospital where I work. The illustrations are very informative, the text is well organized, and the suggestions are well-documented both from research and from anecdotal evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
At last, a book for all birth professionals that is concise, informative and in an "easy-to-look-up" format! There is a bibliography at the end of each chapter, allowing the professional to give citations to clients and to allow her to actually read the studies if she so chooses.

The size of the book makes it easy for a doula to throw into her birth bag or for a nurse to have handy on a labor and delivery unit. The amount of information packed into its' size is incredible.

I now heartily recommend this book to all of my birthing friends and doulas who take my training. Bravo, Penny and Ruth! And thanks for making the evidence easier to access!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have!
If you are involved in labour support, you will love this book. It is very thorough and has lots of illustrations to make the points clearly. I'd highly recommend it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!
I purchased the new 2004 Winland-Brown review book and CD. Not only were there many errors in the numbering of the questions AND the numbering of the answers, but the questions are not written at an entry level practitioner's knowledge level. The questions seemed out in left field and were much more difficult than other books that I have reviewed. There were several discrepancies from the Fitzgerald review CDs (2004. When I looked up the information, Fitzerald seems to be correct, not Winland-Brown. There was conflicting information in regards to fetal movement counts and prostatitis, and in other areas that I can't recall at this time. Don't waste your money. I recommend Fitzgerald's review course/CDs and book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Thorough but discouraging
I obtained a copy of the book from a former classmate. The sections are divided to focus on specific areas of need. The volume of practice questions in text and disk is great, BUT, I found most questions far more difficult than what was on the actual exam (in my case, I took the AANP version today). The practice questions may be very discouraging to some as I found it to be, however, try to remember that the exam may not be as indepth. Do take a review course or order review cassette tapes. I recommend the Advance Practice Education Associates (APEA) review by Amelie Hollier who is a likable, encouraging, excellent speaker who tells you what you need to know with memorable stories. Note: I am not affiliated with the company nor am I being coerced to sharing this. The Fitzgerald review course does not cover many conditions but what it does cover may be more indepth than is necessary for the exam. Good Luck to ALL!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
Skip this one! Out of date questions with a lot of "All of the aboue" options that are NOT on the test. The practice disk is a waste as well. I found that questions were repeated frequently. Now I can't even open the disk- it keeps saying there is a file error.

Try Kidd & Robinson's or Fitzgerald's FNP certification reviews instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one to buy.
Used this book and can say that the disk was extremely helpful in terms of practicing for an online exam. If you are limited on time, and can't do a whole lot of review, just doing the disk review is a good place to start. Wish I had purchased this while in school, at the start, rather than waiting. Bottom line, I found this book to be very helpful in preparing for the FNP exam and I passed. So, it worked for me!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
I bought this review mostly for the computer practice disk that came with the study guide. Before my FNP exam I would have rated this book a 4-5 star but now that I have taken the exam I rate it more poorly. The study guide questions offer a lot of "all of the above" for an answer choices but the exam did not have a single one. Also the guide had a lot of questions regarding percentages and again there were none on my exam. However, the guide did give some tips on test taking that were beneficial and did bring some areas of attention that I needed to practice more on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Helpful!
I am in an accelerated RN program and I had never before written a care plan. I found the required Carpenito book too difficult to follow and my clinical instructor recommended this one. It was great. All you have to do is look up the condition you are ineterested in and it will give you all revelant care plans. I highly receommend it to all new nursing students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book!!!
I am a 2nd year nursing student and this book is well organized and covers a multitude of diagnosises that others do not.
If you need it broken down by Nursing diagnosis and their definitions to qualify a client for that diagnosis, this information is in the beginning of the book.
This is a must book for nursing clinicals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A keeper.
The strength of this book is in its simplicity and that it provides a good review for anatomy / physiology. I used it to review for the FNP exam and found it to be a keeper on my shelf, next to other primary care across the lifespan books.

2-0 out of 5 stars FNP guidelines- fenstermacher
HEENT, in particular, leaves something to be desired. Not as straight foward as similar publications. Not comprehensive enough. Pricey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic summaries and management guidelines- A NP Bible
My copy is used constantly for review. I update in margins since this is a 1997 copy and some changes in management have occurred. It is still a good reference Bible that I use daily. ... Read more

This practical review book meets the needs of family nurse practitioners preparing to take the national certification examinations. It provides content on both the FNP’s approach to practice based on the Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan, Evaluate (SOAPE) format and a format that accommodates both the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) and the test blueprint of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Sample test questions pertaining to the specific content reviewed are included at the end of each section. Test questions are classified according to the ANCC problem areas, the Academy domains, and across the lifespan, which allows students to focus their study efforts on those items causing the most difficulty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review
I benefited from the practice questions and exams. Excellent resource. It offers a good review of common problems/clinical issues with review questions following each topic. The CD-rom is useful, too, and worked perfectly for me. It contains three practice exams with 175-207 questions. I was scoring around 72% on the practice exams and passed the AANP exam yesterday! I would definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars CD is flawed- Mosby will send you a new one
Mosby did discover that the CD is flawed somehow but they will send you a new one at no charge. Don't let the issue of the CD influence you in terms of the book. It is a great review book. There are lots of test questions- more than most other review books, along with rationale. If you have difficulty in getting the new CD( hopefully now all the books have the revised CD) please get in contact with me (drobin2530@aol.com). Denise Robinson, book editor

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked for me!!
I enjoyed how the sections were separated by body system. It made it quite easy to study. Also, the review tests were likewise separated making it easier to diagnose my areas of weakness and my areas of strenght. This allowed me to focus more of my time on my weaknesses and not waste it on things I already knew. The two full-length tests were a good practice for the real thing. Best of all I PASSED!!

1-0 out of 5 stars The CD ROM is AWFUL!
If you are looking for a book with CD ROM to practice test questions on the computer...DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! The answers are incorrectly programmed so even though the rationales make sense, it is graded entirely wrong. Ditto what the other reviewers has to say about this major flaw...

1-0 out of 5 stars CD is very flawed!
DON'T BUY FOR THE CD-ROM! The rationales do not match up with the correct answer. On the practice test on the CD I got a score of 38, but when I went through the rationales it had marked the ones I had right (according to the rationale) wrong and vice versa. (I actually had a 82). There is no rhyme or reason to this flaw! I bought this b/c I wanted to practice with computerized questions, esp. since the test is computerized! The ANCC book is good but $$(NursingMall.org). Other good books - Fitzgerald, and Winland-Brown. ... Read more
