5-0 out of 5 stars Most user friendly reference
I originally purchased this book when I was new to critical care. Recently my copy was misplaced, and I find it difficult to use any other book! It is small enough to have with you at work, and is easy to look up important facts quickly in an ICU setting. There isn't a lot of "fluff" and just the ncecessary information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Critical Care Quick Review
I work in a Level 1 Trauma Hospital in the Medical and Cardiac Critical care unit, which means really sick patients, with a high acuity level. This book is one of the most user-friendly, comprehensive, how-to manuals I have ever come across. In fact, we have adopted this book for part of our hospital-wide critical care classes with the nursing staff. The detailed descriptions of what it is, why it is, and how to perform the many procedures that we use in critical care were accurately and simply written for even the earliest beginner to understand. It's updated material and medications were current to the info we also use today. I have not found any other book to rival its complete and thorough information. I highly recommend this manual for any nurse, either considering to go into, or in the critical care field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful handbook
This is a wonderful handbook of the most important ICU facts. It is very easy to read and has just about everything you need to know about caring for a patient in critical care. Since I have bought the book it has served as a reference guide as well as a study tool for the CCRN exam. I highly recommend this book to any ICU nurse! ... Read more

Book Description

Winner of the prestigious AJN Book of the Year award, Teaching in Nursing is a key resource in the dynamic structure and function of preparing the nurses of the future for teaching careers. Faculty must be conditioned to look forward and teach in new ways; diversity of students, curriculum development, redesigning of health care systems, and information and technology advances are just a few of the growing challenges that facing those who choose to instruct. This result is largely due to the editors' standing in the nursing community and their ability to secure only the very best contributors. This is only 3-in-1 nursing education resource available! While most other texts address only one component of teaching, Teaching in Nursing covers three-teaching, curriculum, and evaluation. It provides comprehensive, contemporary guidelines to help instructors meet the day-to-day challenges of teaching. Instructors will also find the guidance they need to ensure that their teaching practices reflect the evolving health care environment. The authors reference current literature in nursing education, as well as the classics in nursing, education, and other fields.Judy Halstead chairs the task force on "Development of Nurse Educator Competencies" for the National League for Nursing, and is on the front line of influencing the trends in teaching education. Dr. Halstead is also the program evaluator for the CCNE. Both Drs. Halstead and Billings serve on the NLN Think Tank for Nursing Education and are frequently sought as educational consultants. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Alright
Basic Arrhythmias, I found, difficult to first grasp. The formal in which the text is laid out in is tough to read. The ECG strips were very detailed and easy to read. I have never seen any other ECG books with as many practice strips as this one. I found this book complemented what I had learned from other "paramedic" textbooks such as Sanders' book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, simple, and simple!
I have to say that this is the best college text book I have ever used. Clear, concise explanations of semi-complicated topics. I could not ask any more out of a book, except maybe lowering the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars How "Basic Arrhythmias" helped me in paramedic school.
I was an basic and intermediate EMT for years. Intimidated by learning how to interpret and analyze EKG's, it was, by far, one of the most frustrating topic for me in paramedic class. My instructor recommended the "Basic Arrhythmias" book by Gail Walraven and in no time at all interpreting and analyzing EKG's became easy and soon after I was doing it like a second nature.

Now, as an EMT instructor, I recommend "Basic Arrhythmias" to my students and I am confident that they will find peace of mind in learning EKG's, just as I did.

Thank you Gail Walraven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for programmed instruction.
I teach a Basic EKG Course in staff development and I highly recommend this book for all levels of health care providers from unit coordinators to nurse managers. The arrythmia practice strips are excellent and having the correct answers in the back of the book allows the adult learner to verify their interpertations or seek further learning in an area. The explaination of a difficult subject is made easy. I have used this book for several years and look forward to the new editions to see what else Gail Walraven has included.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most helpful medical books I have ever purchased
I learned disrhythmia interpretation in a weekend with the help of this book, and still pull the book off the shelf ten years later to brush up on my skills. I recommend this book for anyone needing to learn and understand how to read a cardiac monitor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Saunder 'd been a good review book for very long time.
I found it so much details and effective. I believe people who used this book would have said that too. I think what the other reviews was right. The only thing is CD question was unexpected for me. The content was good but CD question wasn't good enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Q&A Review for NCLEX Saunders
The book is okay and I do like having the rationales right next to the questions. However I got the Dosage and Calculations CD instead of the RN review CD. I havn't taken my NCLEX yet and am not having much luck reaching the publishier to replace my CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars SAUNDERS NCLEX-RN REVIEW/ Q&A NCLEX-RN
It is extremely different reviewer from my previous resources. Infact, I am already used with it since before, It helped me to pass my Philippine Nursing Board Examination since 1994 when I took my licensure examination in the Philippines. I find it very detailed.

I have worked in different countries as a nurse but I stick only to the best book which made me a successful professional nurse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but the CD-ROM is defective
I have exchanged the CD-ROM of Saunders Q & A more than five times and it is still either the incorrect CD or defective one. It kept giving me the same rationale for each and every question; and, did not tabulate my answers. Very frustrating. I called the publisher already but still got a defective CD-ROM.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best NCLEX-RN review book!
This book really help me prepare for the boards. I would suggest not to bother with the book because they had the rationales right next to the questions so it was quite annoying. However, the cd-rom was great. The exam format and questions are similar to the NCLEX exam. I highly recommend this for practicing Q & A's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lippincott's Review for NCLEX-PN
Not only does this book help you with the review for the n-clex, it is invaluable to you while you are still in the nursing program. Many times the questions in the book were very similar to test questions in my classes. This book gets you in the critical thinking mode. Also it explains the answers as well as why the other choices are incorrect. My study group swears by this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars PracticalNurse2b
I purchased this book, and after using it,I borrowed several books from a friend that had taken the PN exam and passed. I was amazed at how I was able to answer the questions correctly from the books I borrowed from her. If you are looking for a good review book, I suggest this book "Lippincott's Review for nclex-PN. The section "Frequently Asked Question(FAQ)" will help a great deal with the style of questions asked on the exam, and other questions you may have. Of course, no one has any idea what questions will be on the test, but I am confident that this review book will help a great deal. I am passing my review book down to a nursing student, and I know it will benefit her. The main key is to review and of course remain confident. Nursing school was not a piece of cake, but this book will help. "You Can Do It".....

4-0 out of 5 stars "Finally-a smart choice to a passing grade, look NO further"
This book focuses on many areas of nursing including med-surg, pediatrics, the Endocrine system, and lab values which are all areas covered in length on the Nclex-PN CAT. I would highly recommend this study guide to any nursing student studying for the board. Included is a disk with multiple questions and rationales. I purchased many types of resources in preparation for the Nclex and I feel this book prepared me more than any of the others. Good luck future nurse! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
This book is horrible. And so expensive too, for such aa bad book. Why would you want to buy this book when you can get Egan's respiratory care in color and beautifuly written too for similar price? Dont make a mistake. Unless you have money to throw away and dont care about quality then go ahead and buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be the last on your list for resp. care knowledge
I am an RT student and this was one of our required texts. We were the first class to have this book inflicted on us. Numerous mistakes have been found, by the students! Some of the answers to the review questions at the end of each chapter are nowhere to be found. We are all having a book burning party at the end of the semester. (That is not a joke) Please do not subject yourself to this book! Egans rules!

2-0 out of 5 stars stay away
I really hate to say it , but this book is just not worth 1/20th of any other major respiratory care book (for example Egan's fundamentals of RC or Dean Hess et al, RC: principles and practice) I feel bad saying it since I know how much hard work it takes to get a book to be printed. The whole design, bad fonts, cheap paper, and organization of the book is really bad. You could gather 2 or 3 chapters that are decent, but we all know that for the book to be successful it must have at least 3/4 of its material acceptable to read and enjoy. I doubt this book will make it into 2nd ed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Critical Care Nursing Made Incredibly Easy CD-ROM
I thought that the CD was ok.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great test review tool!
I love this CD! It is a great way to take a break from studying, have fun and still use your precious time effectively! It is filled with humor and even gives you praise for correct answers. If you answer incorrectly, you may get a pie in the face, or your desk may fall through a trap door in the floor! You can choose 3 different modes: endless lecture, problem patient, tedious textbook torture. You can then pick your content from a list of topics. I use it before our units tests to see what I still need to rewiew! Watch your test grades improve. I highly reccomend this fun CD for any nursing student, or anyone considering critical care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a sense of humor
It takes a light look at a serious and stressful job and teaches you at the same time. I did enjoy learning outside my specialty (CCU) as well as refreshing my memory. Not for those who enjoy white pages full of words..geeerrr puts me to sleep better than Ambien. Laugh, learn and enjoy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Insulting presentation of material
I was stunned to see the format the questions are presented in, described as "fun" on the box.(In addition,I thought this CD-Rom was going to be in the same format as other "Made Incredibly Easy" books, but it is simply a set of review questions). Cartoon images show a nurse (or student) studying, in class, or with a patient(this isn't the bad part). If you answer the question correctly, the teacher smiles, fairy dust comes down on your cartoon character, the patient congratulates you, etc. Here's the stumper though, and I wonder who thought this was a good idea: If you answer the question incorrectly, the teacher's eyes bulge, her face becomes enraged and she screams at you, your classmates laugh at you, the cartoon book in the library becomes large and threatening and screams at you, the enraged patient yells at you, or any variation on this theme. This presentation would be horribly insulting to any professional. Unfortunately, I opened my CD-rom and cannot return it.

4-0 out of 5 stars critical care made incredibly easy
A good exercise for review or learning in the critical care area. I found the questions to range from easy through very difficult. Some nurses only work in certain areas of critical care i.e., cardiac, burns, brain trauma, so this offers a chance to gain knowledge in areas other then your expertise. It's so simple to answer a cardiac question if you deal with it day in and day out, but a burn question may really stop you in your tracks. What is best is the answer is always given along with the rationale. Also hints are given if you need them, although I like to try and use that option only when really stumped. I also found there to be quite a lot of questions although some come up more often, which would be the only drawback. Another nice options is you can pick the categories you want and the amount of questions you wish to answer. The animation is an added attraction. It puts a little fun into the study time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great CEN Prep
This book was perfect for CEN prep. Following my CEN I found all of the information that I could remember that was tested in this book. Prior to the exam, I used practice tests and when I identified my weaknesses, I used this book to study that material at an indepth level.

5-0 out of 5 stars core curriculum review
It is the definitive work on core knowledge required of ED nurses. As with any other core curriculums the format is in outline. I've been an ED nurse for almost 25 years and use the core as a guide and to jog my overloaded memory bank.

2-0 out of 5 stars No outlines please!
This book is full of partial knowledge. It is a good outline to catapult your memory, but it is not good for learning the material the first time around. It is boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read Survival Guide for Nurses
Donna Cardillo, RN succeeds in capturing the experience of "your first year as a nurse." Her book provides first hand accounts from recent graduates, practicing nurses, and Donna's own experiences. Donna guides you through the steps of getting your first position, finding resources to help you succeed, and communicating with coworkers, patients, and their families. Her comprehensive book even includes a chapter on stereotypes, annoyances, and myths which will resonate with every nurse both male and female. That chapter also provides the reader with some clever ways to respond to stereotypes. Seasoned nurses will find Donna's chapters on staying connected and taking your career to the next level filled with invaluable tools to help them flourish in their career. In a time where the nursing profession is entering a shortage, and working conditions for nurses have been less than ideal, it is refreshing to read accounts of nurses that maintain a positive outlook and can share their coping strategies with the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read how to be a professional nurse
As a nursing student or beginning nurse, looking for guidance and advice that helps in adapting to the unfamiliar role as a nurse is invaluable. Reading countless numbers of textbooks, listenting to long lectures from instructors, and getting 30 second advice from staff nurses can leave a the beginning nurse bewildered as to what to expect once their license and career is on the line. Donna Wilk Cardillo has written a book that can help the beginning nurse develop into a sheer professional.

I am a nursing student with a degree in business. As I was about to embark upon the nursing profession, I needed some sound advice that would give me confidence as I started my new career. Reading "Your First Year As A Nurse," I found out how to interact with patients, families, doctors, co-workers, and supervisors in a professional manner that I hadn't learned about in school. The book offers "real world" experiences and testimony from other students and professionals that helped me to visualize myself taking on the nurse role with confidence. Cardillo has used language that is easily interpreted and challenges the reader to make themselves into a better professional nurse.

Cardillo's book also explains in depth how to be marketable in the nursing profession. Using her expertise in career development, Cardillo offers much advice to the beginning nurse about how to advance themselves to their desired position. The reader can learn and become comfortable in obtaining their own business cards, establishing mentors, interacting with health care professionals, and creating self-confidence that leads to success.

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Challenging Year of Nursing
I have been a nurse for almost 30 years, and would have benefited greatly from a book like this. Nursing school is wonderful for teaching a lot of technical information, and if a student is in a 4-year program, some professionalism, but Donna's book takes the reader to the next level--that of fully embracing your new life as a nurse and practicing nursing as a true professional.

She gives many helpful tips on interacting professionally with patients and doctors (oh, how intimidated I was by doctors in 1976!). She discusses the value of networking and becoming connected with others in our profession through the Internet. She talks about how to avoid burnout, a situation seen quite a bit today with nursing shortages nationwide. Donna outlines the value of setting goals and journaling, techniques designed to enhance self-worth and value.

This book is a must-read for either a nursing student or a new graduate, as it is just filled with common-sense ways to make the most of an extremely valuable profession. After all, if you are going to take 2-4 years out of your life to pursue a nursing career, don't you want to make it the best decision you ever made? Donna's book will help you see clearly that nursing is an honorable and valuable life journey.

1-0 out of 5 stars unhappy
I purchased 5 copies sight unseen, based soley on quality articles I have read of Cardillo. This book is an insult to the intellegence of new nurses. Much of the content is true and could be helpful if not presented in such a condesending manner. Now I have 5 books I intended to hand out to the new nurses I mentor - never would I suggest they read this book. Cardillo is a great writer, I'm shocked she really wrote this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good medicine for nurses RETURNING to work, too
And in the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
T.S. Eliot

*Your First Year As A Nurse* was exactly what I needed when I needed it, but not for the reason you might expect. I will be 50 years-old this year. I practiced nursing from 1977 to 1991 and am returning to clinical nursing after I complete an RN refresher program. While I may not be "a new grad" I certainly feel new. So much has changed in the last 12 years. I am in need of a big dose of confidence and Ms. Cardillo's book is just the right medicine.

The book is well-written, organized and sprinkled with gentle humor. It addresses almost every aspect of feeling inadequate because of inexperience, but it doesn't dwell on negatives. Instead, it focuses on the joy and value of learning and emphasizes strong communication skills. I especially liked it because it is filled with personal stories, and comments from real nurses in the trenches.

The most amazing thing about the book, to me, is that it maintains a realistic outlook in a positve manner without sounding like it was written by someone named Pollyanna. Ms. Cardillo makes it all seem possible in the real world because she writes with honesty. She looks at difficult situations head-on and instead of asking "What's the problem?" she asks, "What's the solution?"

I left nursing in 1991 in a state of complete burnout. It was a time of change that I could not accept: the dawn of HMOs, DRGs and managed care. Hospital nurses were being laid off in great numbers to save money and replaced with technicians who had two weeks training. Delegation and case loads became the buzz words.

Because of a severe shortage of hospital nurses, there is a huge recruiting effort to get nurses who have left back into the workforce. You'll find everything from RN refresher programs to intense hospital-based internships for nurses who have been out of the workforce for more than five years.

Our finances have changed and I need to go back to work as an RN. I was very frightened by this possibility even though I have always kept my nursing license active. And then I found Ms. Cardillo's book.

I have cried in places while reading it. It is as though I am recapturing the sacredness of nursing that I had lost. It isn't written just for the beginner. It is also wonderful for someone like me who has been out for a long time and wishes to return.

No, I don't have a long time left to work as a nurse (maybe a decade, 15 years at most), and some of the chapters on career building make me very sad when I think of what could have been. (I would love to go back and talk to that young woman but I can't.) Still, *Your First Year As A Nurse* gave me another lens through which to look at nursing.

The author reminded me of why I became a nurse in the first place so many years ago. 9/11 affected me deeply. Because of this book, I will "dare to care" once again-and maybe, if I'm lucky, know the place for the first time. Thank you, Ms. Cardillo, for writing the book. ... Read more
