Book Description

This revision of Cavanaugh's best-selling text is written within a biopsychosocial framework and covers the specific age-stages of adult development and aging. The book's currency of research and theories cited and the connections developed between research and application contribute to its excellent reputation. The book's focus on the gains and losses people experience across adulthood distinguishes it from its competitors. The new edition features a complete reworking of its organization and a thorough updating of citations, including hundreds from 1997 through the present. A new separate chapter on Social Cognition, Chapter 9 (the research area of the new co-author, Fredda Blanchard-Fields), offers expanded coverage of this exciting area. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
Many of you who are considering buying this text are probably doing so for either a regular college course or for one of the Regents College/Excelsior College exams. I decided to earn a second bachelors degree and am working through Excelsior College. This is the required text for one of their exams. I can say that the book is thorough and covers the material that you need to know to pass the test, completely. Like many psyhcology and sociology texts, the subject matter can be dry, but the author seems to do a better than average job of dealing with this. I feel that the fact that I got an 'A' on the exam says very positive things about the text and its ability to prepare you for the testing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent companion book
I also use the Mosby pocket guide to cultural health assessment by D'Avanzo, but this book is a must for those cultures found most often in the US. It includes American Indian, Japanese American, Chinese American, etc. It was last edited in 1996 but the information seems to be current. The spiral binding makes it much easier to use also.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Occupational Therapists too
I actually purchased this book to enhance my professional knowledge as an Occupational therapist. As a medical professional, I feel that with the varied cultures we work with on a daily basis, this was an extremely helpful handbook. I would recommend this book as a reference for any medical facility. In relation to Occupational Therapy, the book includes attitudes & rituals that a culture has toward activity of daily living (ADLs), food practices, care of family members & family relationships. In a medical field that "does not have time to deal with anything other than the physical needs", we should all reallize that if we take a moment to listen to the patient & incorporate their cultural differences, then we can all offer better quality of care. When we offer the most complete unbiased care, respecting the differences in others, we can help prevent further medical complications, by NOT neglecting the "true" needs of a family. Please add this book to your quick reference medical collection. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough
It all depends on what kind of review book you are looking for to study for the CCRN. This book is generalized and broad. I prefer study guides that do not make you go to other references to relearn what you need to know. I like it all in one place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right!
I am studing with ICU nurses for the CCRN exam and we have a variety of books to study from. This book is very straight forward and to the point. It is in outline form with just enough info to either confirm your knowledge basis or to let you know that you need to "dig" for more. Each and every section is correlated with the outline from AACN for studing for CCRN exam. The rest is up to me - see you at the testing center. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is frustrating and time consuming!
I am not sure why my school chose this book/ Author. I have yet to meet anyone who enjoys using this book. I give it 2 stars only because it has all the NANDA dx in it (if you can find them!)I find it very time consuming. If you enjoy flipping back and forth to several pages without much help in finding what you are looking for, then this is the book for you. Index aside, this book needs to be more user friendly. I simply do not like the way it is organized. Risk Factors are seperate from Nursing DX, but stuck in the middle of the book, good luck following from one section to another! There is no friendly flow in this book to use it efficiently. Sorry, but I can't recommend this book. There has got to be a better way to write this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Nsg Dx books written
This edition and its previous editions were well written. The books clarify each nursing diagnosis and gives an excellent list of "related to" topics. One of the most useful sections is the Errors in Dx Statements. This helps students from misinterpreting diagnosis by giving a different perspective and by leading the reading to the correct dx. Age group considerations are excellent as well as the follow-up principles. A must have book for every nursing student. I am still waiting for psychiatric dx to be included. Okay, maybe I was too hard on the handbook. We should have been required to buy the full book. Hurry up and publish the 8th Edition...I need it for school!!! -Curtis Chow

4-0 out of 5 stars Pricey
This is an expensive book, however a good resource to keep on hand. This book is set up as an outline. This is not a detailed text covering all the ins and outs of pathophysiology on the cellular level. It does cover pathophysiology but set up in an outline form, not a standard textbook. Easy to read and grasp information.

This book can be found cheaper at the AACN web site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for critical care nursing

1-0 out of 5 stars Very superficial
We used this text in a graduate nursing research course. It covers materials superficially and is not useful for planning research, especially qualitative research. The statistics section was particularly useless. While it describes many statistical tests it does not provide the information needed to actually conduct the tests nor does it compare and contrast the usefullness of one test verses another.

3-0 out of 5 stars poorly organized
I have used this text for class and find it to be poorly organized. Specifically, if you approach the chapters as ordered, students feel that the course sequence is redundant, yet because of the global and superficial approach, they still need additional work with basic concepts like measurement, validity, and others. Some of the "middle of the book " chapters seem more like enrichment materials, yet these are presented before core concepts are covered. In the future,I will go back to the tried and true Polit and Hunglar text.

This book combines the theoretical knowledge and psychomotor skills required to perform the required to practice the art and science of respiratory care.Other books only present the psychomotor aspects of a skill or procedure (monkey see monkey do). This is the only text that integrates the theory knowledge and the practical skills in one concise manual.By combining both aspects of procedural performance, indications, contraindications, assessment and outcomes may be more thoroughly emphasized. The inclusion of the American Association for Respiratory Care Clinical Practice Guidelines lends credibility to this approach. The clinical practice guidelines emphasize the importance of assessment of need, contraindications, hazards/complications, monitoring and outcomes assessment.Simply providing a cook book approach to a skill or procedure negates the importance of the theory required to perform adequate assessment and document outcomes of a given therapeutic intervention. ...
