5-0 out of 5 stars Most readable for the layperson
This is a book that has been around for many years and is regularly updated to reflect the current knowledge on alcohol and alcoholism. I have used it as a text for undergraduates for a number of years and still find it to be the most comprehensive and readable book on the subject around. If you are a professional or simply a person interested in the subject, it is likely to have the information you are looking for. It is NOT a book solely about alcoholism, but is about alcohol and how it affects (physiologically, medically, socially, behaviorally)those who consume it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Oh no, not again!
This is the third Lippincott book I have looked at recently, and even though I have only read the first few pages, I can already see that it is continuing this publisher's tradition of poor, or possibly non-existent, editing.

Here are just two sentences, both from the same paragraph (page 16):

"[Vasodilation] and vasoconstriction influences balance."

Should be:

"[Vasodilation] and vasoconstriction influence balance."

"[Hypoventilation] and hyperventilation influences loss carbon dioxide and water, which effects fluid and electrolytes." (3 mistakes)

Should be:

"[Hypoventilation] and hyperventilation influence the loss of carbon dioxide and water, which affects fluid and electrolytes."

If you appreciate correct English, avoid this publisher. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition Now by Judith E Brown
This book is easy to ready, comprehend and enjoy. It is a required text at the University I attend, and I was suprised to find it so easy to read. I really like this book, I find many of the pictures to look like the pictures I grew up with in my text books in Jr High and the commercials I watched.

Judith did an excellent job in putting hard to relate to information into an easy to follow format. Charts, graphs, and great pictures made this an easy read. It certainly has helped me realize that many of us do not eat properly, and has helped me to understand how to alter the way we eat for the better.

You will find many interesting facts on Vitamins, fats, food digestion, and daily requirements. This should be the owners manual we are given. If we were to grow up with the knowldege in this book, Americans would be in much better health.

I also like the fact that it is not a hardbound copy. It is lightweight and easy to take anywhere when I need to study.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book To Know About Nutrition
I bought this book for a class and it shows pretty thouroughly everything you want to know about nutrition. It seems to talk a lot about nutrition fads, and how quick fixes in nutrition to lose weight, gain muscle don't add up too much. It is pretty much by the book on everything. The main message I'll make is that this a book to read if you are wondering about your nutrition habits. It gives sufficient information on nutrition, recommended to all because it is easy to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition in pregnancy and lactation
My edition is now an antique so this review is not current. I was fortunate enough to have the author as instructor in a course with the same title at UW School of Nursing in 1980 and I can safely say it is the single course which has made a daily difference in my life ever since. Worthington-Roberts has great integrity and this permeates a piece of professional literature in a way one seldom sees. I was thrilled to see that the book is available in a current edition and would recommend anything by this author on the subject of maternal and child nutrition without reservation. Today I practice as a staff midwife and breastfeeding specialist in a hospital in Norway but still find English language sources to be the best on such topics as this. There are now many, many books on pregnancy, breastfeeding and lactation, but there will always be a place on my bookshelf for this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a lay text. A book for professionals in physiology only
The only thing I got out of the book was that a lactating mother needs more protein and the increase can be satisfied by drinking 3-31/2 cups more milk a day. There was also a need for more folic acid and some other vitamins that can be supplied by eating more green leafy vegetables. I was hoping for practical daily nutrition suggestions and there were none. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I use this book extensively
This book is the required text of my dietetics coursework time and time again and thus I use it extensively. At first I resented the very large and heavy book, but more and more I find myself turning to it for answers, even for things that aren't school-related. My university has a book rental program. Previously I'd only rented the book, but now, as I sit inbetween semesters, I find myself missing it terribly. The moment the bookstore opens I will be buying this book for keeps.

I give it four stars because it's cumbersome and dry, although on the positive side you can point out it's cumbersome and dry because it's such an exhaustive and scientific coverage of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the Healthy & ILL
It is a book that will answer all your questions regarding Food, Diet and Nutrition exactly as its title suggests.
My father is in a "Presistant Vegigative State" due to a massive hammerhadge, and thats what triggered me to look for a good book that will help me to deal with his special feeding requirment. Not only that I have found very valuable information concerning my fathers situation, but I also found excellent information for me and my wife so we followed a dietery program to loose some weight.
Unfortunatly in 'Kuwait' where we live,we have very limited sources of information regarding Food and Nutrition so we needed a reference book that explains every term and has all information needed in details such as the tables and calculating formulas and soforth.
In my opinion this is 'a most have book', and in the field of Nutrition it is 'Second-to-non'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Krause's Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy (eds; Mahan and Escott-Stump)10th ed is 1000% user friendly! Each chapter starts off with a glossary of terms in the ensuing pages which levels the learning field. Colorful charts on practical information are generously sprinkled in every chapter with clear illustrations on anatomy, energy reactions, and algorithms. You'll find lots of "ah ha" moments are you go through this book like I did. An example was the increased metabolic rate by adding spice to a meal! And the reference was also right there!

Each author's excitment and passion for the topic covered comes through the pages loud and clear. Cleverly colored boxes of strategically placed information capture your eye and your mind! Another example.. in Chapter 6 on Water and Electrolytes.. the percentage loss of body water and degree of disability associated with the same could not be made any more obvious.. and you just don't forget the message.

This resource covers everything from herbal therapies and rationale to heart transplant and all points in between. Over 1150 pages to get the new Millennium off to a smart start! I already know this book will be among the most used in my professional library. It is highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK for a textbook
This is quite an informative book on a number of topics, from drug addiction to heart disease to sexuality. My only complaint is the emphasis placed on "spirituality" which seems to be another word for religion. The writer seems to be implying that anyone who is not religious cannot be "healthy," without offering any other spiritual alternatives for those who do not subscribe to religion. I wish the same amount of space had been devoted to meditation as is spent on the "power of prayer." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting AND informative
I bought this book to study for a quiz-out test for my Psych major. I read through three chapters the first time I picked it up. I usually have to force myself to complete an assignment, but with this book I just kept reading with no pushing whatsoever! I highly recommend this book to anyone taking a class in this subject, whether or not it is the required text. It would be a great additional information source. It is helpful if you or someone you know may be going through any type of drug or alcohol treatment--from caffeine to heroin. I also enjoyed the online quizzes you are allowed to access once you have the book. It really enforces what you have learned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information!
I thought this was an excellent source of informaion. I used it for a class and earned an A. Very thorough and easy to understand. Lay terms are frequently used and I found I learned a lot and found it very valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Strictly No-nonsense
This book is the source for unbiased information on the sociological, psychological, pathological effects of "drugs" - this compendium covers everything from caffeine to antipsychotics to alcohol to psychedelics and everything in between. A review of the history of each drug introduces each chapter. Careful attention is paid to not only the effects of the drugs themselves, but the effect which they have on our laws and the way in which treat addiction.

As a former student of Dr. Ray's I can attest to the thoroughness of this work. It is the one book that doesn't tell you what to think about drugs - it provides you with the data to be informed to make your own decision. In fact the DEA uses this book in training! If you are looking for a comprehensive resource for school, your own interest, or just to be informed to talk to your kids, look no further.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory text
An excellent general overview, covering drug use and regulation, pharmacological basics, in-depth analyses of the legal drugs, tranquilizers and stimulants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and marijuana, and comments on "a rational look at drug use." Well-documented with an abundance of relevant quotes and statistics; a rich set of references follow each chapter. ... Read more
