Book Description

Everyone wants their children to have the best possible diet, particularly in those all-important first years of life. But parents (especially new parents) aren't nutritional experts. So how do they know if their babies and toddlers are getting all the nourishment they need?

Now, with "Better Baby Food," there's a complete, authoritative guide that takes the guesswork out feeding young children -- from birth to 24 months and beyond.

Developed with the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children, this book provides the most up-to-date, expert advice available, with easy-to-read information about every aspect of feeding young children -- from breast and bottle feeding through to the introduction of solid foods. Each page is packed with tips, recommendations and common-sense guidelines for parents, including important topics such as food safety and allergies, teething and tooth care, digestive problems, essential vitamins and minerals, snacking, homemade vs. commercially prepared foods, feeding while traveling, as well as vegetarian diets.

But that's not all. In addition to its wealth of nutritional information, this book features over 220 easy-to-prepare recipes, organized by meal and recommended age range. Each recipe provides a full nutrient analysis, and has been baby- and toddler-tested to ensure maximum flavor appeal. Start the day with "Baby's Fruit Smoothie" or "Apple Breakfast Bars." At midday try dishes such as "Lunchtime Pasta and Bean Casserole" or "Crustless Cheese 'n Carrot Quiche" and, for dinner, "Fiesta Tomato Surprise" or "Chicken and Peach Salad." These recipes are so imaginative and delicious, you'll want to make them for your own dinner table!

New parents need this book -- they need anything that will make their sleep-deprived lives easier -- but experienced parents can also benefit. With its combination of comprehensive nutritional information and fast-and-easy recipes, "Better Baby Food" is the ideal resource for anyone entrusted with the care of children.

This book was developed in association with the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN is acknowledged as one of the foremost children's hospitals in the world, and has been providing leading-edge care for infants and toddlers since 1875. In the 1930s, when malnutrition was common among Depression-era children, the hospital's Dr. Frederick Tisdall developed Pablum, which is now sold by Heinz as "The Original Infant Cereal." Today, with an international reputation for treatment and research programs in all areas of children's health, the hospital treats some 340,000 patients each year. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's My Bible!!
I love this book. I didn't know anything about how to feed a baby past the breast feeding stage and this book was a God sent! It gives you all info you need on when to introduce foods and how to help with special dietary needs - if you have them. The recipes are delicious and fairly easy, my husband and I eat from them all the time and my 15 month old son has loved the food from the start. I bought it at a baby show and it really helped me to keep my son on an appitizing and well-balanced diet. I will definately buy the next book for ages 2-5. Keep up the great work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of helpful info on feeding your baby
This is one of my two favorite books on feeding a baby. (The other is Child of Mine by Ellen Satter -- a more comprehensive but much less readable book.) This book concisely explains the basics of pediatric nutrition and provides all kinds of suggested meals/snacks for babies and toddlers of various ages. Sometimes I get into a rut when it comes to feeding my child, serving up the same types of foods day after day. This book gave me ideas about a bunch of other recipes to try and, for the most part, they've been foods that my super-picky toddler has been willing to try.

5-0 out of 5 stars A help for a healthy lifestyle...
I stumbeled upon this book just when my son (who is 1)had just started to refuse to be spoon fed by myself, husband or my son himself! I was starting to worry that he was not getting the proper nutrition that he required. This cookbook helped! The into was particulary helpful, with the sample menu's and how to start feeding your child "adult" food. I refer to these menu's all the time and they reassure me that I am doing a good job on offering my child nutrition.

As for earlier reviews that the cookbook is filled with sugar and fat filled recipes, well yes there are some that I would not feed my child, but you can also alter these recipes to your preference. However, the majority of these recipes are an excellent way to start your child off healthy.

1-0 out of 5 stars You Can Do Better for Your Baby
I was fascinated by this highly-rated book written by registered dieticians with the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. What I discovered upon reading the book is why the children are so sick. While I was expecting recipes for healthy foods to get my daughter off to a good start, I found instead saturated fat and sugar-laden meals. A recipe for baked beans, recommended for 12 to 18-month-olds, calls for molasses, brown sugar and eight strips of bacon! Better that you should take your child to a fast-food restaurant.

If you are really interested in raising a healthy child, try "Super Baby Food" by Ruth Yaron. Not only are the recipes full of nutrition, but the book also includes tips for making child-friendly cleaning products and other projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
My 17 month old has enjoyed every recipe I have tried. In fact my husband and I have also enjoyed the recipes. The recipes are designed for small meals so that even if your child does not enjoy them, there is not much food that has been wasted. All the ingredients are easily found in any store. I would very much recommend this book to anyone wanting some fresh ideas on what to feed a toddler. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for a typical student
This book might serve the purpose of an athlete, but may not be good for a typical student or non-student.
It has cited too many references, as if it is for a student pursuing a research program. An average undergraduate student has no time to scan through piles of references cited in this book.
It has little by way of visual aids.
Its contents do not present a straightforward methodology for an average person to deduce pros and cons of a food menu.
It has some biased opinions. For example, Figure 1.4 does not list Smoking as a possible cause for Lung Cancer.
It does not give any information about the author, apart from the author's being at the Old Dominion University.
The web link www.mhhe.com/williams stated on the back page of this book is not valid. This becomes a frustrating experience.
The book is in Paperback format, is used mainly by community-college students with limited budgets for books, and is not a monopoly book. Many better and cheaper textbooks on this subject are available from other publishers. Thus, this book's price tag of $95 is super high. Even the 7th edition's price tag of $75 seems to be high.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
I highly recommended "Nutrition for Health, Fitness and Sport" to exercise science and nutrition students. It's comprehesive yet not too technical.

You may also want to order "Creatine: The Power Supplement" by Williams et al. (Human Kinetics 1999).

PS. You may also want to read my article "Protein metabolism in exercising human with special reference to protein supplementation":

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information that you can understand and apply

He also covers fluid and electrolytes. He also includes weight loss, weight gain chapters that are very useful for any athlete of any level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for doctor's office and for fireplace reading
This book is under the banner of the famed Linus Pauling Institute (Oregon State University) has it has a great foreword by Bruce Ames. Linus Pauling was one of the best thinkers of the last century and he recommended much higher than RDA / Daily Value intakes from a multi-vitamin as well as some other supplements in order to help procure optimal health.

There is no science yet to suggest that Pauling was wrong about such high dose supplementation --for example to lower blood-toxin homocysteine, the most likely cause of most heart disease, some cancers and Alzheimer's disease. However, the medical world is slow embracing the evidence supporting this approach but that is changing.

This book is an important and tightly edited work that will help practicing physicians and interested lay people with factual data, pointers and references and even the most knowledgeable person will surely pick up important health information they would otherwise have missed.

This is a well organized handbook with 27 chapters for the individual vitamins and minerals and their effects, sources and therapeutic indications and drug interactions.

This book has "Tolerable Upper Levels" tables to satisfy even the most conservative physician but it must be said that this heading represents a level that prevents the most uncommon or even trivial interactions, and a level that may well be much below "Optimal Levels" as suggested by Pauling, and which are likely to promote health in the great majority of people.

The book would benefit from a "Pauling Proposed Probable Optimal Levels in Most" table and from the inclusion of chapters for what used to be named vitamin F, with the F from "Fat", i.e. the essential omega-3 and omega-6 oils, think of them as vitamins F-3 and F-6. Present intakes of omega-3s are well below adequate levels while omega-6 (linoleic acid from most vegetable oils) may well represent our most common "vitamin overdose".

The challenge of the new nutrition is figuring out the "Long-Latency Deficiency Diseases", LLDD's if you wish, caused by the insufficient intakes over time of one or several nutrients, from vitamin D and calcium for bone health, to the homocysteine-lowering trio of folic acid, B6 and B12 for heart and other diseases.

This book builds a solid foundation with what is known, it is without technical errors and it is clearly presented. Vital in a doctor's office and much recommended for the interested lay person. ..... ... Read more
