5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy at last!
After about 4 decades of trying to lose weight fast, I noticed that I was over 20 kilos heavier than before. So I decided to lose weight slowly - and it's working!! Rosemary Stanton's idea is to change the emphasis in your eating and exercise patterns rather than to go on a diet. Diets make you feel like you're in prison so of course you break out - and head for the chocolate shop! What I found worked for me was to keep a diary, not of the eating mistakes I made, but of the things I did right. I gave myself gold stars for fruit and vegetables that I ate and, every time I did some exercise, I added another star. I gradually cut back on the fats and oils, remembering to keep some, partly because they satisfy hunger but also because your body needs some. One day, I noticed that I had a star for exercise every day of the week. Wow! I thought, I'm actually changing. So I kept on going until I had 20 stars in a row. Why stop here? I asked myself. Now I have done some exercise every day for 263 days. Some days I feel really tired but I just do a little exercise so I don't have to start counting from zero again! It's a great incentive! And, with the eating, I don't ban any food. I just change the emphasis more towards fruit and vegetables and wholemeal breads and cereals and less towards fatty foods. I am much more healthy. I used to get colds and coughs all the time. Now I just power past them and get on with life. And some researchers are saying that exercise and mental activity like reading helps in the fight against brain deterioration. And, all the researchers seem to agree that cancer and heart attacks can be prevented better with a healthy diet and lots of enjoyable exercise. For myself, my asthma and hayfever is more manageable than it has been for years and I've been able to halve my medication with help from my doctor. I've lost 12 kilos over about 2 years. That sounds slow, I hear you saying, but compare it with the 20 kilos that I had put on over 4 decades and it gets it into a different perspective. I still have a way to go but, by "hastening slowly" I'll get there. The trick is to go so slowly that your new habits become automatic. So, do I have any chocolate now? Yes, of course, but I have a bit here and there rather than the addictive style of eating it that I used to have. It's not that I have will-power. It's that with more fruit and vegies, my body feels more satisfied and crazy cravings don't effect it so much. What about when I feel hungry? I just eat more food. The food that Rosemary Stanton recommends is very nourishing and yummy and satisfying but doesn't put on weight so you can have heaping helpings. She has some good recipe books too. Good luck if you decide to try this path. As she says, start by loving your body and then treat it well by giving it enjoyable activities and nourishing food. Be a friend to your body. ... Major sections include: the effects of starvation on reproductive casualty, the influence of prenatal nutrition on maternal and infant health, the Motherwell Protocol, physiological and pathophysiological effects of malnutrition, birth weight and development, the correlation of prenatal and paranatal complications with neurological disorders, the relation of maternal health to infant health and development, nutrition during infancy and early childhood, and the biological imperative. Two new chapters have been added that assess important programs of nutritional supplementation and management of pregnancy. Those interested in the role of nutrition on reproduction will also find a mass of valid scientific data from studies of human development. Written in simple language, the book is a forceful presentation on the subject and will be stimulating reading for both the professional and the layman. ... Read more
