Book Description

Obesity now represents a serious problem in industrialized nations. An increasingly large number of people, especially children, are overweight - leading to subsequent illness and a reduced life expectancy.

At long last, with this first evidence-based review of the current intervention strategies for treating and preventing obesity clinicians and health insurers have a guide that allows them to select the most efficient and cost-effective method of treatment for any given state of the illness. The whole is backed by extensive tables, a checklist for quality assurance and an extensive glossary.

With a foreword by George A. Bray, Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University and Chief of the Clinical Obesity section:
""Treating and Preventing Obesity - An Evidence Based Review" provides a careful and thoughtful assessment of this disease and the options for its control and treatment. It started with the medical model where cure is the outcome. This valuable report provides a timely new analysis of a growing problem."

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition in pregnancy and lactation
My edition is now an antique so this review is not current. I was fortunate enough to have the author as instructor in a course with the same title at UW School of Nursing in 1980 and I can safely say it is the single course which has made a daily difference in my life ever since. Worthington-Roberts has great integrity and this permeates a piece of professional literature in a way one seldom sees. I was thrilled to see that the book is available in a current edition and would recommend anything by this author on the subject of maternal and child nutrition without reservation. Today I practice as a staff midwife and breastfeeding specialist in a hospital in Norway but still find English language sources to be the best on such topics as this. There are now many, many books on pregnancy, breastfeeding and lactation, but there will always be a place on my bookshelf for this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a lay text. A book for professionals in physiology only
The only thing I got out of the book was that a lactating mother needs more protein and the increase can be satisfied by drinking 3-31/2 cups more milk a day. There was also a need for more folic acid and some other vitamins that can be supplied by eating more green leafy vegetables. I was hoping for practical daily nutrition suggestions and there were none. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A student's opinion
This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.

Book Description

Get the truth about the dangerous side effects caused by many of the most popular fat-burning and muscle-building supplements on the market. Find out how you can avoid these side effects, which products cause them, and how you can build the body of your dreams in the safest, most effective manner possible.

The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible is a supplement review of the people, by the people and for the people. We hold these truths to be self evident that most supplement review books are merely cleverly disguised catalogs put out by large supplement companies in order to sell their products. That you, the consumer, are intelligent and are justifiably skeptical of any supplement information produced by companies whose sole purpose for existence is to sell you supplements.

The problem up until now has been that too much of the power is in the hands of large supplement companies that can afford to bombard you with endless advertising containing carefully selected, often misleading information of their choice. Some companies have even taken to financing double blind clinical studies conducted at respected universities leaving one with the impression that the information produced by these studies is beyond reproach and should be trusted. Unfortunately, supplement companies who finance such studies often only do so after being assured that the studies will be setup in a manner that is virtually guaranteed to produce results that will help sell their products. Such tactics not only make the mistake of insulting one's intelligence, but also commit the far more sinister act of jeopardizing one of the most precious gifts known to man, good health.

In order to combat such tactics and create a more perfect union between supplement retailers and consumers we have spent the last several years compiling thousands of supplement reviews provided by honest, unbiased consumers who use the supplements, but have no financial interest in them. This amazing compilation is now available as a book, The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible. The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible contains valuable information that will protect your health and allow you to obtain the body you have always dreamed of in a safe, effective manner. Including information on:

* An ingredient found in almost every popular weight loss, fat burning, get ripped nutritional supplement that has been linked to heart problems, panic attack and depression.

* Two ingredients found in almost every supplement designed to increase muscle mass that have been linked to kidney problems, dehydration, muscle pulls and tears, gynecomastia (the development of female breast tissue in men), acne, and rage.

* Supplement users reveal the safest most effective muscle building and fat burning products on the market.

* People who use supplements designed to treat serious medical problems report the benefits and side effects that they experienced.

* Supplements that should be avoided at all costs because the possible side effects outweigh any benefits.

* An extremely popular supplement that was blamed for the sudden death of a teenager during soccer practice.

* Thousands of consumers who have used thousands of different nutritional supplements for years report the benefits and side effects that they experienced and tell you the steps they took to use the products in the safest manner possible.

* Nutritional supplements used by football player to increase aggression on the field and inflict serious bodily damage with reckless abandon.

* Supplements used and abused as a means of getting legal highs and much more.

All of the supplement reviews in The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible are provided by outstanding people like you who use the supplements, but have no financial interest in them. These reviews cover virtually every nutritional supplement, herb, and alternative medicine on the market. Now, you will know the truth about how well these products works before you buy them. You will save hundreds of dollars because you will only be buying products that work. More importantly, you will be protecting your health by learning the truth about all of the benefits and side effects that popular nutritional supplements can cause and quick and easy methods of avoiding these side effects. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars nutritionalSupplements.com bible
This book is definitely NOT worth the $. It has opinions of readers without concrete scientific facts, or even names to back up what they say. It is like being in a chat room. You really do not know what you are getting. I am angry as I blew $30 on a book that should be priced in the $9 range. My favorite supplement book was written by The EAS founder, Bill Phillips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of High Quality, Valuable Information.
I had been searching hard to find honest reviews of popular nutritional supplements. I learned far more from The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible than expected. The most helpful part was reading the hundreds of first hand experiences that honest, unbiased consumers have had while using popular diet, weight loss, and muscle building supplements. Plus, there are tons of reviews of just about every nutritional supplement on the market today. I now only buy a supplement after reading reviews of it in The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible. This way I know that it works before I try it and I am getting much better results.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE SUPPLEMENT BOOK YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR
The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible is an amazing resource that tells you the good and the bad about supplements through the experiences of people who actually use them. So much of the supplement information out there is thinly disguised sales pitches from companies trying to sell you a product, but this book is different. There are hundreds of reviews from real supplement users on everything from Creatine to Ephedra to St. John's Wort.

The book is organized alphabetically with dictionary-like headings at the top of every page, so finding the information you want is a breeze. You won't believe some of the horror stories people have had with supplements you can buy at any drug store. I can't tell you how much money I've saved by referring to The NutritionalSupplements.com Bible before buying a product. If you want to know if a supplement works as advertised, you need this book! I recommend it highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete and Handy Reference Guide
Part 1: The Vital Keys to Good Health
Part 2: The A to K of Vitamins
Part 3: Minerals: The Elements of Good Health
Part 4: Exploring Other Supplements

Appendix A: A quick reference chart for common health problems such as acne, colds and insomia
Appendix B: Resources (includes addresses and phone number of that company/organization) for Finding nutritionally oriented physicians and other health care professionals in your location, Nutrition and the elderly, Testing labs, Supplement manufacturers, Supplement infomation and regulation, Federal Regulation and Industry association & help for medical problems
Appendix C: Includes a in-depth glossary of the terms throughout the book.

This book is packed with infomation and I found this book very useful.

In its introduction, the author explains briefly on why vitamins and minerals are so important for us to stay alive. Throughout the book there are plenty of charts, including many that list good food sources for the various vitamins, minerals, and other supplements. The book also gives tips on how to get the most from your foods and supplememnts, how to avoid problems like overdoses or bad interactions with other drugs or supplements. It also includes a sidebar with a duck character letting you know what supplements don't work or what to avoid because it dosen't work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to read, informative and fun book on vitamins
This book is very helpful if you are interested vitamins. I knew a decent amount before reading this book, but learned a lot more. It'll tell you what the max dosages are, the dangers of overdosing on certain ones, what each vitamin does and the myths surrounding some of the vitamins, minerals etc. Cancer runs in my family, so I'm looking to avoid that problem. I learned that soy products inhibit breast cancer. More importantly (since I don't like soy products) I found out that I can find soy tablets at the store! A lot of really good information in this book, and as I said, it's extremely easy to read. I read it within a few days

5-0 out of 5 stars A big thank you to the authors
The book helped me to make an informed decision about what vitamin supplements to buy suitable for my personal circumstances. Took me just 4 hours of reading. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to get too bogged down in this vitamin stuff, but just wants a quick overview of how all these vitamins can help you be more healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Nutrition
Anyone interested in learning about nutritional supplements should read this book!

It covers all of the basics about supplements, why we need them, and what benefits they can provide us with for optimum health. You'll see all of the popular vitamins, minerals, herbs and antioxidants and a whole lot more.

I strongly recommend "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vitamins and Minerals" to anyone that has wanted to learn more about supplements, but didn't know where to find reliable information.

This book helped me to get seriously involved in the nutritional supplement field, and I make sure that I keep a copy of it readily available at all times! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I use this book extensively
This book is the required text of my dietetics coursework time and time again and thus I use it extensively. At first I resented the very large and heavy book, but more and more I find myself turning to it for answers, even for things that aren't school-related. My university has a book rental program. Previously I'd only rented the book, but now, as I sit inbetween semesters, I find myself missing it terribly. The moment the bookstore opens I will be buying this book for keeps.

I give it four stars because it's cumbersome and dry, although on the positive side you can point out it's cumbersome and dry because it's such an exhaustive and scientific coverage of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the Healthy & ILL
It is a book that will answer all your questions regarding Food, Diet and Nutrition exactly as its title suggests.
My father is in a "Presistant Vegigative State" due to a massive hammerhadge, and thats what triggered me to look for a good book that will help me to deal with his special feeding requirment. Not only that I have found very valuable information concerning my fathers situation, but I also found excellent information for me and my wife so we followed a dietery program to loose some weight.
Unfortunatly in 'Kuwait' where we live,we have very limited sources of information regarding Food and Nutrition so we needed a reference book that explains every term and has all information needed in details such as the tables and calculating formulas and soforth.
In my opinion this is 'a most have book', and in the field of Nutrition it is 'Second-to-non'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Krause's Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy (eds; Mahan and Escott-Stump)10th ed is 1000% user friendly! Each chapter starts off with a glossary of terms in the ensuing pages which levels the learning field. Colorful charts on practical information are generously sprinkled in every chapter with clear illustrations on anatomy, energy reactions, and algorithms. You'll find lots of "ah ha" moments are you go through this book like I did. An example was the increased metabolic rate by adding spice to a meal! And the reference was also right there!

Each author's excitment and passion for the topic covered comes through the pages loud and clear. Cleverly colored boxes of strategically placed information capture your eye and your mind! Another example.. in Chapter 6 on Water and Electrolytes.. the percentage loss of body water and degree of disability associated with the same could not be made any more obvious.. and you just don't forget the message.

This resource covers everything from herbal therapies and rationale to heart transplant and all points in between. Over 1150 pages to get the new Millennium off to a smart start! I already know this book will be among the most used in my professional library. It is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a general nutrition book.
This highly technical medical text provides an outstanding explanation of the nutritional needs of patients with renal disease. The chapter on calcium and phosphorus homeostasis is particularly well written. Because the writers assume the reader has a fundamental understanding of physiology and pathology of the kidney, this book is has limited usefulness for the casual reader.
