This is the first book to integrate the biological, nutritional, and health aspects of antioxidant status. Fifty contributors integrate and transfer the knowledge of free radicals and antioxidants from the test tube to the laboratory of the biologist, clinical nutritionist, and medical researcher, as well as to the office of the dietician, nutritionist, and physician. Topics examined include factors affecting and methods for evaluating antioxidant status in humans; effect of diet and physiological stage (infancy, aging, exercise, alcoholism, HIV infection, etc.) on antioxidant status; and the role of antioxidant status in nutrition, health, and disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive review of antioxidant research
The book is an excellent reference for anyone interested in the role of antioxidants in both food and biological systems. The contributors are leaders in their respective fields of research with many years of experience and outstanding credentials. I found the book to be a most valuable resource for personal enlightnment and for guidance in my quest for new and improved nutritional supplements for the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Science and clinical knowledge about antioxidant supplements
This book is an example of a multidimensional book. It succeeded well in integrating topics of wide and current interest dealing with antioxidant status, nutrition, health and disease. The result is a book that is very readable and can benefit a broad spectrum of audiences. In addition to nutritionists, dietitians and health professionals, specialists from other disciplines such as chemistry, biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacy, and pharmaceutical sciences can benefit from this book.

Of particular interest is the extensive discussion of the role of diet and nutritional supplements in health and disease. These topics have attracted wide public interest and have been making national headlines in recent years. World class experts from academia, government and industry discuss these topics applying the same rules of scientific and clinical evidence used in the discovery and evaluation of new drugs. The high caliber of this discussion is representative of the overall quality of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Foods for Super Kids
I loved it! It has good information about fun, healthy meals for kids. I would recommend this book to mothers of young children to help establish good eating habits.

1-0 out of 5 stars religious cook book with lame recipes
this cookbook cloaks its religosity under the guise of healthy eating, and is full of comments on god's way. additionally, it gives "recipes" such as the one for "quick vegetarian chili," the ingredients for which are: "1 can vegetarian chili" -- PATHETIC! i was insulted by this book, which told me nothing i didn't already know about nutrition, didn't have any good recipes, and was evangelical. an honest and proud author would advertize her wares more transparently, and say that she has found health through god, allowing readers and potential patrons to buy into her beliefs or not. this book is inexpensive, but not even worth its price. if i not been on the road when the book arrived (and thereby missed the deadline to return it), i would have asked for my money back. now i'll just have to throw it out. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for a typical student
This book might serve the purpose of an athlete, but may not be good for a typical student or non-student.
It has cited too many references, as if it is for a student pursuing a research program. An average undergraduate student has no time to scan through piles of references cited in this book.
It has little by way of visual aids.
Its contents do not present a straightforward methodology for an average person to deduce pros and cons of a food menu.
It has some biased opinions. For example, Figure 1.4 does not list Smoking as a possible cause for Lung Cancer.
It does not give any information about the author, apart from the author's being at the Old Dominion University.
The web link www.mhhe.com/williams stated on the back page of this book is not valid. This becomes a frustrating experience.
The book is in Paperback format, is used mainly by community-college students with limited budgets for books, and is not a monopoly book. Many better and cheaper textbooks on this subject are available from other publishers. Thus, this book's price tag of $95 is super high. Even the 7th edition's price tag of $75 seems to be high.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
I highly recommended "Nutrition for Health, Fitness and Sport" to exercise science and nutrition students. It's comprehesive yet not too technical.

You may also want to order "Creatine: The Power Supplement" by Williams et al. (Human Kinetics 1999).

PS. You may also want to read my article "Protein metabolism in exercising human with special reference to protein supplementation":

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information that you can understand and apply
Melvin Williams has written a great book on sports nutrition. He takes a chapter to cover every nutrient including supplementation and athletic performance in regards to that nutrient. He also covers fluid and electrolytes. He also includes weight loss, weight gain chapters that are very useful for any athlete of any level. ... Read more

Achieving the Mind-Body-Spirit Connection: A Stress Management Workbook is a self-help workbook for individuals seeking guidance in managing personal stress. It contains a combination of insightful content and original self-assessment exercises with the overall purpose of creating a sound and successful stress management program.Features of this workbook include Brian Luke Seaward’s unique holistic perspective on uniting mind, body, spirit and emotions and a writing style acclaimed for being very user friendly, often described as if one is having a conversation with the author.

The association between stress and disease is well documented, from the common cold to cancer. However stress also distorts decision making, disrupts emotional thought processing and compromises the health of the human spirit. Good stress management is nothing more than common sense, but in a fast paced, fragmented society, good sense is anything but common. Achieving the Mind-Body-Spirit Connection serves as a wonderful reminder of what we know at the deepest level of our being: Optimal health requires the integration, balance and harmony of mind, body, spirit and emotions. Drawing upon the disciplines of psychology, physiology, sociology, theology, anthropology, mythology and quantum physics, Dr. Seaward blends the proven tenets of ageless wisdom with a score of practical ideas, suggestions and exercises to help you truly achieve harmony between mind, body, spirit and emotions. From comic relief and hatha yoga to guided mental imagery and music therapy, this workbook contains over 70 exercises which serve to integrate mind, body and spirit as one dynamic force that can withstand the pressures of whatever stress may come your way. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is truly an inspirational book, and I highly recomend it.
The Power of Your Plate is one of the most inspirational books I have ever read concerning the detrimental effects on the body due to improper food choices. Dr. Neal D. Barnard, presedent of the physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, along with 20 health experts guide the reader through a journey geared towards better health by illuminating all sources of animal products from the plate. They help one realize how eating wisely is truly a gold mine attainable to us all. The relationship of diet and disease is viewed from different parts of the world to explain why Americans have such a high rate of cardio vascular disease, strokes, high blood pressure, cancer and more. Anyone who would like to live a full healthy life and avoid ailments that are common in America needs to read this book. It does not tell you to eat less. It explains how to eat right for the rest of your life. Unlike most diets, this is more of a plan, and following it will help insure you do not become a stastistic like most Americans eventially do. I have written a 15 page critique on this book. If you are interested, I will email you a copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Editor William Roberts, MD, of the American Journal of Cardiology writes in his "Good Books in Cardiovascular Disease Appearing in 1999" that the Manual of Lipid Disorders "is an excellent book. I use it frequently." Although the book is written for the physician reader, it may also be helpful for the educated layperson interested in knowing cutting-edge information about reducing risk for coronary heart disease. There is an extensive discussion of the concept of rupture-prone, or vulnerable, plaques featured in January 2000 on ABC's 20/20. ... Read more
