5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book.
The book was great. It contains all the important facts about pregnancy, not shrouded by opinion. It just contains facts that you can use to your advantage to achieve a healthy and sucessful pregnancy. The editing is supreme. I learned about the book through the news, when I saw the debbonaire editor promoting it. His excessive charisma drove me to get it, and I havn't regretted it for a second. The book was excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Pregnancy Books
This book does not scare you or make judgements, it just gives you hard facts so you can make your own informed decisions. I already had several other pregnancy books when I bought this one, but it is the only one I would recomend to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best pregnancy book I've read
I already had the "What to expect when you are expecting" book when my sister gave me "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy". I was so impressed with the details on a week by week basis. The pictures of the different development stages of the fetus during pregnancy are by far better than the ones in the "What to expect ..." book. They are much more realistic. The book also has a wonderful section called the decision guide about all the different tests and possiblilities that helps me make my decisions in a non biased manner. Each month it also provides a list of issues that you may experience including if and when you should notify your doctor. Now I don't have to wonder if I am being a worry-wart over a trival issue or not. This will be the reference book I will use for the rest of my pregnancy! I also plan on giving this book to all my pregnant friends!! ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifesaver!
This book was a lifesaver! Shortly after turning 47, I experienced severe bloating, severe cramps, extremely heavy flow and frequent periods. I was so bloated I could not wear my ring, could not zip up my pants and the fold in my eyelid drooped down. My uterus felt so heavy, I felt as though it hung between my knees. My period was so heavy, I could not go to work, stayed in bed on a towel and went to the bathroom every 1/2 hour to change pads and tampons. I researched the internet and found black cohosh and progesterone cream which helped a little. It was not until I went to Women and Children First, a bookstore in Chicago, and requested books on perimenopause that I found Ann Gittleman's book, "Before the Change". I immediately read it and began her recommended vitamin and herbal supplements. I began to feel like myself within 2 weeks. The bloating is gone and my periods are almost back to normal after 4 months of supplements. I recommended her book to all my forty something friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman over the age of 35 needs to read this book!
I almost returned this book when, as I was thumbing through it, I saw something about evening primrose oil. I thought it might be too off the wall, then I started reading. I have tried only two of Ms. Gittleman's "Peri-Zappers" and I can't remember when I last felt this good. It's like a miracle! What I can't understand is why no educated physician would tell me my symptoms may be due to a lack of progesterone or a magnesium deficiency. Do yourself a favor ladies and BUY THIS BOOK. It is well organized and easy to read. Each possible perimenopause problem is thoroughly explained in plain language. Once you understand what symptoms correlate to which perimenopause problem, you can make a determination about your own issues. Then, Ms. Gittleman presents a solution of either diet, supplements or both. She even recommends specific products and tells you where to buy them. This book has literally changed my life. I have struggled with horrible "PMS" symptoms for years, and one week with this book and I feel like a new woman. I HIGHLY recommend it and wish you all the renewed vigor I'm feeling.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, But....
I had to downgrade this book from four to two stars because of the author's frequent promotion of particular brands, such as Uni Key. Perhaps it's a pet peeve, perhaps it's just rampant raging hormones, but I've always been driven nuts by that particular practice. I also found the plugs for her other books a bit tedious.
Having said that, the information contained in this book jives with what I've read in others about perimenopause - all of which I've purchased in the past several days. (I'd highly recommend "The Change Before the Change" by Laura E Corio, MD. It does a much better job of explaining the medical underpinnings of what we're all experiencing.)
I have not yet begun the recommended regimine of supplements; it will be interesting to see if what she and others propose actually work.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For Every Woman Over 40
This was one of the best books that I have read. Prior to reading this book, I knew my body was feeling different but did not understand some of the symptoms and was not quite sure how I would explain them to a doctor. Well, now I don't need to. I took some of the advice on the Peri-Zapper's and within days I had more energy, my mood was better and I was sleeping like a baby again. I really believe that if I had gone to see a doctor I would have been on various medications which would not have got to the root of my problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INFORMATION FOR EVERY WOMAN OVER 40
Ann Louise Gittleman has outlined important information that every woman over 40 should know! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER and this book can be a great start for gaining the knowledge and power to take control of your health. Too few doctors have this knowledge or want it, so a woman must have it so she can discuss it with a doctor who is comfortable with nutrition and health. 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all pregnant women...
As a childbirth educator teaching in a hospital, I'm limited on the amount of information I'm able to give my students. Thankfully, this book is listed in the "Recommended Reading" section of our class textbook. Through this book, I'm able to inform my students about the risks of interventions, how to communicate with their care givers, and how to have a better birth. Unfortunately, alot of my students are weeks before their due dates and they miss the extremely valuable information this book gives on how to choose a competent care giver and how to truly find out how their care giver practices.

The pendulum is swinging to a very high technological approach in birth. In the five years I've been teaching, the cesarean rate has doubled at our hospital. It's outrageous and not evidence based care, as Ms. Goer's book explains (and backs up with scientific studies and references).

If you want to know the real story on epidurals, IVs, VBACs, and inductions, get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars As a mom, RN, and childbirth educator, I recommend this book
This book is excellent! It is very well researched with evidence-based information about routine medical interventions in labor and birth. The author gives you the facts, her opinion about the facts, and options for the pregnant woman to consider. While some of the info Henci shares with the reader is not pleasant, it is honest. If for you ignorance is bliss, then don't read this book. If you want to know how typical birth in the US adversely affects you and your baby's health, and what you can do about it, then you will love this book. At the back of the book, the author includes a copy of the Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative. Be sure to take a look at this important concensus document and the list of groups and individuals who ratified and endorsed it - all the major professional organizations of midwives, perinatal nurses, childbirth educators, and doulas. Also take notice who did not endorse it - the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering and Informative!
While the author definately has a very strong opinion on her subject, I believe she does a very good job of backing up her statements with numerous studies and statistics. After a very disappointing birth experience with my first child, which ended with a C-section, reading this book gave me the knowledge and courage to leave my OB and hospital in the fifth month of my second pregnancy. This book focuses mainly on interventions such as pitocin, fetal monitoring, epidurals, etc., and there links to complications and c-sections. I would recommend this book to any healthy women that believes that childbirth is a natural process that should not be interfered with unless medically necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tool of empowerment for childbirth
Two of the most significant lessons I walked away with from this book was a sense of empowerment to trust my body and its ability to birth a child naturally and that child birth is a natural, beautiful and healthy process.

If all women learned that she is the best person to determine her threshold of pain and that it should be her decision (along with the guidance, not dictate of a doctor) when medical technology should intervene, more women would have better birthing experiences.

I am in my ninth week of pregnancy and reading through the book made me aware of questions I should ask during the pregnancy that may help me avoid complications and medical intervention once in labor. I am planning on having a hospital birth but using a labor professional as an advocate for me and my husband during labor. Reading this book made me aware that there are alternative solutions to "problems" one may encounter during labor, and the right labor professional would be the one to advise you about them.

I highly, highly, highly recommend this book to any woman interested in taking a more active role in her pregnancy and childbirth.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and frustrating
I had read several reviews for this book here on Amazon, and thought it sounded like a good fit for me. I have more of a tendency toward the natural and holistic approach to childbirth, and this books seemed to fit the bill. While I did appreciate the section on avoiding episiotomies and some of the info on VBAC's, overall I was frustrated with and disappointed in The Thinking Woman's Guide. The author seems to have a true mistrust of doctors and hospitals. While I agree that sometimes "modern medicine" intervenes when it isn't necessary, I'm not going to second guess every little thing my provider says and does. How can you enjoy your birth experience if you're paranoid that whole time? Some parts of the book are confusing. On one page, the author says that in order to have a "safe" vaginal birth, women should avoid epidurals and other pain killers. But literally on the next page she says for a "positive" birth experience, you should *plan* to have an epidural. So, you're telling me it's not safe, but I should do it anyway? Huh?? The section that I found most upsetting is where the author talks about husbands as labor coaches. She basically says that no husband really wants to be a labor coach and men aren't typically very nuturing or instructive during labor anyway, so all women should hire a doula. Your husband should just sit in the corner waiting around to cut the cord. I found this ridiculous, and my husband (who was an outstanding labor coach during the birth of our first child) was offended. This book was definitely not worth the money I paid for it. I highly recommend looking around for a different guide for your pregnancy and birth. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Doulas
This book should be on the recommended reading list for all doula training programs! In a clear, concise, and thoughtful way, Penny explains what makes labor progress, how to recognize labor progress, and how to help with labor progress. My copy is always in my birth bag. I have used it at several births for various reasons, and have always found it to be helpful, with reminders or even just to reaffirm that I've done everything possible. I recommend this book for anyone in the childbirth field and for expectant couples as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Birth professionals: Don't leave home without this book!
Every once in awhile, a book on childbirth comes along that is a standout. The Labor Progress Handbook is one of those books, but what else would one expect from Penny Simkin and Ruth Ancheta? The authors have produced a lucid, logical, beautifully organized, clearly written, bounteously illustrated, meticulously documented book that gives birth professionals a systematic, practical basis to prevent, diagnose, and treat poor progress in labor. Approaching dystocia holistically, the authors consider the effects of the woman's emotional state, her environment, and the impact of hospital or caregiver policies and attitudes in addition to the standard "powers, passage, passenger" explanation for labor progress. And they are woman centered: the laboring woman is the active agent in resolving difficulties, and the unacceptability of a recommendation always contraindicates its use. If you teach about labor, care for laboring women, or work as a doula or birth assistant, you should--no, must--read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book for anyone involved in childbirth!
This deceptively slim book is jam-packed with useful information that can be used by just about anyone involved in childbirth today. I have recommended it be added as a textbook to the midwifery program where I teach, and I am planning to purchase a copy for the nursing station of the hospital where I work. The illustrations are very informative, the text is well organized, and the suggestions are well-documented both from research and from anecdotal evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
At last, a book for all birth professionals that is concise, informative and in an "easy-to-look-up" format! There is a bibliography at the end of each chapter, allowing the professional to give citations to clients and to allow her to actually read the studies if she so chooses.

The size of the book makes it easy for a doula to throw into her birth bag or for a nurse to have handy on a labor and delivery unit. The amount of information packed into its' size is incredible.

I now heartily recommend this book to all of my birthing friends and doulas who take my training. Bravo, Penny and Ruth! And thanks for making the evidence easier to access!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have!
If you are involved in labour support, you will love this book. It is very thorough and has lots of illustrations to make the points clearly. I'd highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!
This text offers a straight-forward reference to assist in the management of gyn problems I commonly encounter as a Family Doctor. It goes into great detail about anatomy and physiology of gynecologic problems yet is well-organized for use as a "quick reference". For example, it took less than a minute to find the section on hirsuitism to refresh my memory as to what the initial work-up should consist of.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone involved in basic infertility
This is an incredible book. Speroff is still the king when it comes to infertility. In our OB/Gyn setting we refer to it many times in our treatment of basic infertiltiy and have had great success following the guidelines given by Speroff. It should be on the bookshelf of anyone who treats basic infertility!!

    Book Description

It is a sad fact that a growing number of families are facing the loss of a pregnancy. As more women are becoming pregnant at an older age, and as the use of fertility drugs increase the chances of a multiple-fetus pregnancy, the risk of pregnancy loss is escalating every year.

A Silent Sorrow has long been considered the "bible" for families seeking emotional and practical support after a pregnancy loss. Now completely revised and updated to reflect recent findings in medical procedures, laws governing pregnancy termination, and the complex issues surrounding pregnancy loss and reproductive technologies, this straightforward yet sympathetic guide reaches out to couples who have experienced pregnancy loss and helps them to understand and move through the mourning process. The authors address the issues of why and how men and women grieve differently; the potential impact of pregnancy loss on one's career; how to cope with ending an impaired pregnancy; the dual burden of pregnancy loss and infertility, and how to handle pregnancies that occur after such a loss. A Silent Sorrow draws from interviews with bereaved parents to illustrate coping strategies that have proven effective in such difficult situtations. Well organized, easily accessible, and filled with practical suggestions for each topic it covers, A Silent Sorrow is a positive first step for bereaved parents and their families, providing support and guidance to help resolve the grief and enable them to look to the future with hope. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I'd known about this book after my first miscarriage
I heard about this book by sheer coincidence shortly after my second consecutive miscarriage five months ago. It had taken my husband and me a year to conceive after the first miscarriage, and at age 41 my chances of having another baby didn't look good. We were devastated beyond belief; while my husband dealt with his grief by withdrawing, I turned to the Internet and the library for answers. A chance casual glance at an advice column referred me to this book, which I immediately ordered from Amazon. From the moment I started reading it, I could not put the book down. I found myself continuously nodding in agreement as I saw myself on page after page. It's all there: the sense of failure, the jealousy and avoidance of pregnant women and new mothers, the anger at friends and family who didn't acknowledge our loss because they either lacked understanding or couldn't find the right words -- or both.

This book was a huge source of comfort. It helped me over the hurdle of the initial grieving stage and eventually reach an understanding and acceptance of what happened to us. I recommend this book not only to those who have suffered a pregnancy loss, but to those close to the grieving parents who want to gain a better idea of what the parents are feeling, and find the right words and actions.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Review
This book was sent to me by a friend after the stillbirth of my first child. It had been recommended to her by someone who had suffered multiple pregnancy losses. I'm giving it a mixed review because although there was much that was helpful in the book, I also felt there were ways it could be improved. The best parts of the book were the chapters you could share with your spouse and parents, the chapter on dealing with family & friends (especially the practical suggestions of what to say when someone says something thoughtless to you), and the list of rituals which was an appendix in the back. One of the things I had a hard time with was that the authors try to cover so much information relating to miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death. At times I thought they focused too much on the differences between the grief process for each of these types of loss, rather than the common ground. Although there are quotes from bereaved parents throughout the book, I felt somehow that the book lacked a personal touch, it seemed very clinical, professional to me. If in your grief you want to read the first person accounts of others this isn't the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book to survive
Just don't know what to do?
Hate yourself, your partner, happy pregnant women, even God?
Then you should read this book.

This book have everything you need to know after Pregnancy loss
(including termination of impaired pregnancy), Still bitrh, Newborn death.
Medical information, of course, this book will tell you how to
deal with the response of your partner, family, friends, neighbors and colleagues.

A helpful chapter "Finding solace in your religion" covers
Jewish traditions, Islamic traditions, Catholic traditions,
    Protestant traditions and Mixed religions.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the first thing you should read after a loss...
...and then you should keep it and read at the holidays, at the anniversary of your loss, at the anniversary of your baby's due date, and any other time you need to understand the experience of losing a baby. If you have a friend or relative who has experienced a pregnancy loss, send her (or him) a copy of her own. No other book covers such a wide range of medical, phyical and emotional experiences that surround pregancy loss. I should know -- after the stillbirth of my first daughter, I read everything in print about pregnancy loss. I just read the recently revised edition, and was happy to see that it increased information about the kinds of losses that so many women are experiencing in this age of high-tech infertility treatments, and that Kohn and Moffitt are dead-on about the complex range of emotions women and their partners undergo. Combining deep wisdom about ageless issues of parenthood and grieving with the often terrifying new territory of high tech childbearing, this is a book that will touch many lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive book on pregnancy loss
For anyone who has had the sadness to suffer the loss of a child, A SILENT SORROW is THE definitive book to own. It is not only written for the Mother and Father, but grandparents, siblings, friends and health care professionals. It's section on dealing with your loss, understanding the devastation of the grief and coping with it were instrumental in helping me deal with the loss of my daughter, who was stillborn at nine months. I read it, and reread it - sometimes daily - because it provided the comfort and support I needed. It also provides practical advice on creating services, coping with others, thinking about second pregnancies and anniversary reactions. I cannot say enough good things about this book, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a sensitive and practical insight on the sad, and often little known subject of pregnancy loss. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The "Bible" for Gyn Surgery
There are at least two texts that are considered "the authority" for internal medicine. The same for Obstetrics.

For Gyn surgery there is only one, and this is it. Te Linde's is so far ahead of any competitors that all Gynecologists I know consider any other texts to be useful only as supplements to Te Linde's.

It is also written in an easy to follow style - not as dry as many medical texts, and it is exhaustively complete. It would be worth the price (for a Gyn Surgeon) if only for the portions dealing with hysterectomy and surgical treatment of cystocele and stress urinary incontinence.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource for treatment options info
I bought another book that gave a thorough explanation about menopause and it's symptoms, but this book did an excellent job of covering the many treatment options available. The alternative treatments were covered in this book better than any other information I have read. In spite of all the menopause treatment web sites, books, & articles I have been reading for 2 years, I was not aware of the effects phytoestrogens have on women who have not had a hysterectomy. This is something more women need to be aware of!

5-0 out of 5 stars Feelin' hot, hot, hot!
I'll be the first to admit that I'm a dummy when it comes to Menopause. When my wife's libido went spiraling downward, and she started sweating profusely (watching TV), and her mood changed from one second to the next, I started to grow suspicious -- could my wife have Menopause?

At first, I didn't know how people got Menopause. All I knew was that it was not geographically biased and that it primarily affected women. Without a proper medical diagnosis, I was hesitant to tell my wife that I thought she had Menopause. I had to get my facts straight. I needed a book that was going to tell me everything I needed to know about Menopause. A book that could confirm my suspicions and help my wife onto the road to recovery.

"Menopause for Dummies®" provides a fascinating examination of menopause's range of symptoms and treatments. This comforting book reassures you that you are not alone - there are hundreds of people in the world that suffer from this same condition - and there is help. Hormone therapy, herbal elixirs, and good old rest and relaxation are just a few of the ways that can help you deal with Menopause. In no time, you'll be back to living a long, healthy, regularly occurring menstrual-cycle lifestyle.

After reading "Menopause for Dummies®" I learned everything I wanted to know (and a few things I didn't) about Menopause. I'm confident, that if I ever get Menopause, I'll know how to treat it in a safe and rational way.

    And you will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Menopause for Dummies
This book helped explain the mysteries of the process my mother is going through right now and what I will go through in the future. It was helpful knowing that there are alternatives to hormone therapy and also measures I can take to help prepare me for Menopause. The author did a great job of eplaining the important information in terms that I could understand and remember. I like that there was humor placed at important parts to help reiterate the fact that this process isn't the end of the world and won't have to be as bad as some people make it sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, I'm no dummy!
Gosh, I hate the word DUMMIES. The information in this book is basic but is written in a bit of a condescending manner. The delivery is often simplistic, if not silly. (For example, they say my ovaries were dozing and asleep. That's why my period was late some months. Silly.) The Dummies book reminds me of how a mother might explain something to a little kid. (Gee, I hate that word Dummies.) I am sure it is a coincidence that two similar books came out the same month, but of the two, I much prefer The Menopause Survival Guide by Donna Rogers, which I purchased. In that book, the information is delivered like two adult women were sitting around talking about menopause, and one is explaining to the other what is actually going on in their bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice
I've had them (symptoms) all.... Now I know why! Easy to find answers right away. Clearly discusses all the latest research about hormones. I think it's a great book if you're in your thirties forties or fifties. ... Read more

This book is simply fantastic. For the practicing obstetrician, it encompasses almost all the issues dealing with the specialty, concerning operative techniques. For the student, there is a lot of new approaches to subjects that other books do not show. For example, there's an entire chapter on symphysiotomy, another on external cephalic version, both subjects very rarely seen in such depth in common textbooks. There's also a very good chapter on surgical basics, dealing with needles, sutures and knots. In short, i recommend this book for those who truly love Obstetrics' practice.

The authors bill it as a "truly epic journey": the voyage from pregnancy through a lifetime of parenting twins. Perinatologists Connie L. Agnew, M.D., and Alan H. Klein, M.D. (also a pediatrician) incorporate a winning combination of helpful facts, educated opinion, and candid roundtable discussions--a combination that nicely maps the journey's first course for expectant parents of multiples.

Those readers familiar with the ever-popular What to Expect When You're Expecting--a mainstay for first-time parents--will be delighted to see a similar format employed here. The pregnancy and birth chapters break down into chunks of gestational weeks, outlining basic fetal development, mom's changing body, and special "transitional" issues common to each trimester. These chapters are further enhanced by pencil illustrations of the mother's pregnant body (with a peekaboo view of the developing twins) and roundtable discussions involving the authors and a panel of twins' parents.

The book's second half delves into getting through that first, tough year. While ample information on labor and delivery overlaps both halves of the book, this second section spends more time focused on the growing babies and the challenges new parents face in their relationships with their children and with each other. Again, the roundtable discussions prove quite valuable; it's always nice to read encouraging words from those who have lived through preterm delivery, sleep deprivation, and older sibling regression. Growth charts and a helpful resource guide of organizations, periodicals, and retail outlets round out the package. --Liane Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is really a great book!
This book is wonderful! It's been extremely hard for me to find good books on twins, especially pregnancy information. This one takes you through month by month and I really enjoyed the ultrasound pictures included in the book. It was exciting to compare them to mine and see what to expect at the next doctor's visit. The only suggestion I have is that they could have included more information on worries that mothers have (i.e. swelling, sickness) and how to deal with them. I know I've been constantly concerned about making sure that by doing certain things, I'm not overexerting myself so the more they could write, the better I'd feel. But I still love this book and re-read it over and over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars i wish i had this when my twins were born
I recommend this book, along with co-author Ganon's Raising Twins for when your kids are older- I have 11 year old boy and girl twins. I've given this book to my niece who is pregnant with twins and she and her husband love it. The interviews with parents of twins are great and the book has such an upbeat wonderful approach. Lots of information organized in two sections- one for pregnancy and one for the first year with your babies. You will use this book all the time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Twins! Expert Advice from two practicing physicians on pregn
I bought this book for my daughter, who, having a tragic miscarriage several months ago, just found out she was pregnant with twins. We all were so incredibly happy, so my husband and I went right out to get her some books about twins. I started skimming the book on the way home. My first reaction was how much "gloom and doom" was in this book. Maybe with our first experience with the miscarriage, we were ultra sensitive to risks and uncertainty, but I for one found all the negative information very unsettling. I gave the book to my daughter just the same so she could judge it for herself. The beginning was extremely scientific and hard to wade through. To make a long story short, my daughter gave me the book back and asked me to return it to the bookstore, which I did. (...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Book for Twin Pregnancy!!!
I thought this book was the best to show you what to expect during your twin pregnancy. It breaks it down week by week just like the What To Expect When You're Expecting Book.It shows you your changes along with the babies changes every week.Another part that was helpful was the part about the NICU unit.Although nothing can prepare you fully for having your children in a NICU unit, reading about the possibility of it and what they may need was a help.I also felt it informed you of plenty without getting you overly concerned of things that can happen in a high risk pregnancy. For after they were born I didn't use this book much, but I used one called Double Duty. That one seemed to be more informative on development after you bring them home and through school age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Use as a 2nd Source of Info Only
I am so glad that I didn't just buy this book as a means of sussing out important twin information. Informative, yes, but there were many points left out & a lot of silly little sections of parent conversations that could have been easily excluded. I also found that I was able to skim & the skip the whole first section of the book because while interesting to some, I didn't have the time or the need to read in detail about how twins come to be. You'd think if you were having twins, you'd already know that from that initial conversation with your doctor, right? Overall, it was nice to have a book just on twins, but the singleton books seem to have a lot more of the basics. ... Read more
