The definitive reference work on prenatal diagnosis, Genetic Disorders and the Fetus is now available in a completely revised and updated fifth edition reflecting the most current advances in research, technology, and clinical care.

Written by an international team of experts, the volume provides in-depth critical analysis of the latest work in prenatal diagnosis of genetic and other disorders. Topics include: fragile X syndrome, cystic fibrosis, neural tube defects, and hemoglobinopathies; the experience and techniques of amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, ultrasound, fetal blood sampling; abortion and fetal therapy; and medicolegal and ethical issues in prenatal diagnosis. The book describes the use of combined biochemical markers to screen for neural tube and chromosomal defects, presents the latest developments relating to testing fetal cells in the mother's blood, and reviews major advances in molecular genetics that permit prenatal carrier detection and presymptomatic and predictive testing.

Much has changed since the publication of the fourth edition. The new technologies of fetal MRI, 3-D ultrasound, and real time PCR of fetal DNA in maternal circulation yield crucial information. While, integrated screening of data from the first and second trimesters coupled with ultrasound now produces a 94 percent detection rate. ... Read more

Book Description

A smart, authoritative, and comforting source for expectant mothers and their loved ones

"An outstanding blend of practical information and humor. Dr. DiLeo provides a wealth of useful information in a style that ensures a productive relationship between patient and physician. This book should be required reading for any patient who desires a "low stress" pregnancy. Dr. DiLeo's insight on pregnancy is so valuable my plan is to recommend this superb contribution to the literature to all of my patients."
--Douglas M. Montgomery, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans

"A wonderful, must-read book. Dr. DiLeo possesses an extremely rare combination of medical expertise, along with the ability to write in an informative and entertaining style, adding strong doses of compassion and wit. I've read just about every pregnancy book available, and many make great bedtime reading (as the medical jargon and dry writing styles often put you right to sleep). This book will not only keep you awake, you will be compelled to read it from cover to cover while you celebrate the miracle of your pregnancy with your favorite book and doctor. Dr. DiLeo is a wonderful person, an excellent doctor, and a brilliant writer. If only he could deliver your baby too!"
--Jeanine Cox, publisher and cofounder, BabyZone.com

"As both a surgeon and first-time pregnant woman, I had the privilege of reading this book from both perspectives. Dr. DiLeo provides a guide that interweaves the parent with the obstetrician, the philosophy with the physiology, and the practical with the miraculous. This book is nothing less than a complete celebration of pregnancy and childbirth, but with all the facts. An entertaining read! True to its title, my anxiety as a prospective mother has been successfully tamed by the perspective Dr. DiLeo instills into even the serious complications that are a part of any thorough discussion of pregnancy. The surgeon in me applauds an important, informative book. The mother in me finds great comfort in the perspective provided, and the woman in me had great fun reading such a charming and funny book about such a serious subject."
--Elizabeth Kinsley, M.D., F.A.C.S.

"Dr. DiLeo's take on nutrition in pregnancy is right on. Finally, someone has decided to stop over-complicating the diet for normal pregnancy with ridiculous chapters on calorie counting that no one will follow. And finally, someone has decided to champion the role of nutrition and diet in complications unique to high-risk pregnancy. This is the pregnancy book that dietitians and nutritionists have been waiting for. And it's fun too. It's a book that's both delicious and nutritious."
--Diana Davis, L.D.N., R.D., licensed nutritionist, holistic Registered Dietitian, certified American Dietetic Association, national lecturer on nutrition and neuro-linguistics

As expectant parents--especially if you are first-timers--you know pregnancy is synonymous with anxiety. You and your partner require lots of hand-holding from your doctors, loved ones, and friends. Like a soothing cup of chamomile tea, a handy bedside reference, and your dream obstetrician all rolled into one, The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy is your source of must-have information, inspiration, and, of course, comfort, in the angst-ridden world of pregnancy.

Inspired by BabyZone.com, the number-one parenting website (more than a half million visitors a month)--and written by its obstetrical adviser, Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo --this friendly, fun, authoritative guide helps you separate fact from fiction, while calmly and rationally filling you in on common problems that may arise during pregnancy and how to deal with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for old (and new) anxious moms
I already have two children and have read about every pregnancy book out there. I was looking for something new to talk me through number 3 and make the information fresh again, and was thrilled to find Dr. DiLeo's book. The information is complete, understandable, and up to date, and the style is light-hearted and soothing. I appreciate that in addition to giving information on options and variations, he shares his personal opinion, based on years of experience in the delivery room, on what he would want for someone in his family. He also shares his frustration with the interference of insurance companies into medical decisions.

Dr. DiLeo is only dogmatic about one thing: he wants you to pick your provider carefully, and then TRUST them. If you don't trust your doctor, get a new one. I've read several books that encourage women to question and doubt their careprovider every step of the way, which seems to me to increase women's anxiety. Both you and your doctor want the same result--a healthy baby and mother. This book will give you the information you need to work with your care provider toward that goal.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thankful husband's view
As a husband and first-time prospective father, I'm so sick of books written by women for only women and by men trying to write for women that I was pleasantly surprised to finally read a book by someone who knows what they're talking about and who has written a book for the prospective mother AND father. My wife read it, loved it, and then insisted I do the same. The gender card isn't played as it is in a lot of the other books, but there's just straightforward information. In fact, the only time gender is used to advantage is the great tongue-in-cheek humor that every couple experiences between them. This book is not the bore many others are. And it cuts through all the [poop] and gives a clear understanding of pregnancy and all of its variations, options, and choices--and where they fit in for each individual. Bravo to Dr. Dileo for The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy. I feel like I'm ready for my Pregnancy 101 final, which, by the way, is in 4 1/2 months.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful information with a humorous touch
I read many guides to pregnancy, but none discussed the medical facts as clearly as this book did. Dr. DiLeo addresses issues associated with pregnancy as if his readers are both intelligent and have a sense of humor. I used this book a great deal to understand what was happening to me from a medical point of view. I also xeroxed out pages for friends who had questions-even ladies who were in their second pregancy! I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is expecting a child, first or otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abused as a child...and pregnant
This is the only book that talks about getting pregnant after having been sexually abused as a child. I would have never had the courage to report this to my doctor had it not been for Dr. DiLeo's advice that such information is important, the aspects of pregnancy possibly leading to "flashbacks". My doctor was surprised and very impressed to learn that this subject was addressed and asked to see the section. She even confessed to me that she was a victim of abuse, herself! Of course, I'd like to see a whole book just on this, but the fact that this book deals with it and post-traumatic stress syndrome from abuse is so commendable. I don't have any handicapped children, but the author also talks about the psychological impact of trying to have another baby if a previous one is handicapped. This happens so often, it's beyond me why such important subjects are ignored in the other books. This is a compassionate and informative book. The subjects important to me caught my eye immediately, but the rest of the book is a winner, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Every Pregnant Woman
My husband bought this book for me mainly because of the title! My second pregnancy was very different from my first and you could definitely say I was an anxious mother-to-be. Dr. DiLeo's writing style immediately drew me in and made me feel so much more confident about childbirth. His sense of humor makes you actually laugh out loud! His book also covers SO MUCH MORE than any of the other pregnancy books. I think what sets this book apart from the others is that you're getting information from a real doctor that seems to genuinely care about women and their families. I can honestly say that after reading this book I came away with more information and peace of mind than I did from seeing my own OB for 9 months! ... Read more

Book Description

Understanding and overcoming the leading undiagnosed cause of infertility, miscarriage, menstrual problems, obesity, and hormonal disruption.

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which causes infertility and repeated miscarriage as well as more cosmetic problems, such as obesity that is resistant to normal weight-loss measures. Not surprisingly, women with this syndrome also suffer from depression and damaged self-esteem as a result.

Thus far, medical science has had little to offer women with PCOS. In this book, however, leading reproductive specialist Dr. Ronald Feinberg provides a new way of looking at the disorder, linking it to bodywide metabolic irregularities, insulin resistance, nutrition, activity, and stress-a combination of health issues that collectively make up what he has termed "Syndrome O." And this understanding brings new hope for overcoming it.

Written in a compassionate, inspirational, and motivational style, Healing Syndrome O discusses the causes and complications of this condition and provides a targeted plan to help women balance and repair their overall health, overcome symptoms, and, especially, restore their fertility.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing My Syndrome O
Being a patient of Dr. Feinberg's and participating in the Syndrome O Strategies program has changed my life. In 2001, after trying to conceive for quite some time, I discovered that I had PCOS. I began looking for a doctor to "fix me." In February of 2003, after seeing many doctors, I decided to seek the help of a fertility specialist, Dr. Feinberg. After meeting him, I realized that pregnancy was not my only goal; I wanted to live a healthier life. To do this, it occurred to me that I had to be accountable for my actions. I needed to make some changes. I began following Dr. Feinberg's program and sought the help of Syndrome O Coaching Services. Within a few months, I lost 15% of my body weight and my cycles became regular. I am proud to say that I am a success story. In December of 2003, without the use of fertility drugs, my husband and I discovered that we were expecting. Our first child is due to arrive in August.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Empowering
Though I have already read quite a bit about Syndrome O (PCOS) and felt I was well informed, I was able to gain even more understanding from this book. It provided a large amount of information about what happens on the cellular level in our bodies to fuel Syndrome O (PCOS)symptoms and complications. Understanding the science of it all helped reframe my thinking about this disorder and provided the extra push I needed to take back control of my body. I would definitely recommend this book to others dealing with a Syndrome O (PCOS) diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Syndrome O
This book was wonderful!! Having read at least a dozen books on Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, I found this book to be the most empowering! It is loaded with much useful as well as scientific data. It gives hope to those who struggle with PCOS and gives positive encouragement that PCOS sufferers can have much control over this condition. I thoroughly appreciated Dr. Feinberg's viewpoint regarding the genetics of this syndrome. The fact that there are not "faulty" genes as all other books state, but a "faulty" environment and lifestyle that do not adequately work well with the genetic make-up of PCOS sensitive individuals. I found the other books that I have read on this topic to be rather doom and gloom at times. They left me with a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness for my daughters. However, Dr. Feinberg's book gave me hope and help to empower my daughters to take control of their bodies and their lives!

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased, misdirected view of PCOS
I was extremely disappointed in Dr. Feinberg's book. And am offended in his notion that women with PCOS are McDonald's-eating couch-potatoes. If that were the cause, 80% of the American population would have PCOS. Also, encouraging women with PCOS to reach an ideal BMI can be extremely dangerous. Leading to an eating disorder and compromise nutrition. Having a healthy lifestyle is an important management tool and obesity worsens symptoms/ morbidity, however, that's true for everyone. Furthermore, he downplays the role genetics has on PCOS. Could it be the use of fertility treatments, not lifestyle, contributes to the increase of PCOS suffers or are physicians finally diagnosing and treating the "syndrome?" If you are interested in reading a comprehensive analysis of PCOS from a physician who clearly understands it's complexity, with compassion and a great sense of humor, I strongly recommend Dr. Thatcher's, "PCOS: the hidden epidemic."

PS Isn't it a bit tacky to write your own book review?

5-0 out of 5 stars New, fresh approach to PCOS
I was mesmerized from the Introduction onward, as the author described a woman who suffered with the same symptoms as me--irregular periods, 'overnourishment', and infertility. This book will help me move down a better path for overcoming my PCOS.

The different chapters are fresh and honest, as they describe guidelines for how women with PCOS should devote attention to their nutrition, activity, and -- most importantly -- to themselves. I loved the chapter on Syndrome O Survival Strategies. This is a must-read for any woman with PCOS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You will regain power over your body after you read this
I have been trying to get pregnant for 14 months, with no success. Since I already have a two year old, I thought it would be no problem at all. I have always had irregular cycles and have suffered from different forms of PMS, indicitive of hormone imbalance. My OB is pushing Chlomid, but I am too paranoid about the side effects of this drug. I bought this book because I thought I could change my body. Amazing!! The advice this book gives about vitamins and other natural methods is fantastic. I even determined that I am still slightly lactating from my first child, which could be preventing my second pregnancy!! Of course, M.S. offers natural methods to remedy this situation! I am putting my husband on Androvite and I will be taking a reduced amount of Optivite, plus flax and kelp supplements. I hope this does the trick! It is amazing what we expect the "experts" in the medical field to tell us to help us through this very trying time in our lives. I guess the medical profession has given up on the obvious.....nutrition and exercise!! Wish me luck, and you too. (P.S.....my favorite part of the book is when M.S. says that by no means does "relaxing" help in the conception of a child. If you have heard to "just relax" as much as I have, you will be as happy as I was to see that "relaxing" has no benefit, in print!! Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book --- Very Informative and Well Researched
This comprehensive book clearly explains the relationship between nutrition and fertility. The well-written, referenced chapters are easy to follow and truly are essential reading for anyone interested in learning how nutrition affects fertility. Furthermore, most of the information is not readily shared or known by many physicians, so it's not like you will learn it during a doctor's visit. If you are trying to conceive and are experiencing any difficulties, I would **highly** recommend this resource as a knowledgeable guide.

You will not encounter any "birth control mentality" in this book since the author is Catholic. However, her objectivity is clearly not sacrificed as another reviewer commented. Therefore, this book would be very helpful to both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Another excellent resource is "The Art of Natural Family Planning" by John and Sheila Kippley. With these two books, I was able to successfully remedy some infertility problems. At age 38 after repeat early miscarriages, I am expecting! The wisdom and recommendations shared in the pages of "Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition" have played a large part in this pregnancy. Throughout the pregnancy and post-partum period, I will continue to follow Marilyn Shannon's expert nutritional recommendations.

The third edition of this book includes a wealth of information in the Appendix that is not to be missed. How I wish Marilyn could update this book on an annual basis since she is definitely very aware of the latest research and findings that affect fertility.

Hands down, this book is my top recommendation if you would like to learn how nutrition affects your fertility, if you are experiencing cycle irregularities, or if you are seeking pregnancy. This well-written, informative text will provide THE answers that you will not find elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has been a HUGE help to me
I'm a nutrition book fanatic, and this is the best women's nutrition book I've ever read. I think every woman would benefit from reading it, especially those who have had problems with their cycles or infertility. I largely credit this book for helping me clear up some longstanding health issues I had that prescription drugs were not able to fix.

Be warned that the author is a devout Catholic and occasionally makes comments that reflect her morals. This may be annoying to some people, but you're doing yourself a disservice to skip the book altogether because of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fertitly, Cycles, and Nutrition-- Worth Reading!
I thoroughly enjoyed Marilyn Shannon's approach to taking charge of our health through good nutrition. Her style is easy to read and conversational and backed with up-to-date information. This is my second purchase as I also read an earlier edition several years ago. Following her approach has made a difference in my own life as I have quite successfully navigated the perils of menopause--thanks to attention to good nutrition and the information that most doctors don't seem to be aware of. This is one to read and highlight and keep nearby for reference. I especially liked her 80/20 rule concerning good nutrition-- it's something most of us can live with as opposed to rigid admonitions. If you are interested in improving your own health, you will find this book helpful and interesting.

1-0 out of 5 stars From a LEGIT nutrition professional
Don't waste your money on this book. Most of the info in the book comes from what a few (literally 3) male physicians think about nutrition and pms, and Ms. Shannon simply rewites their thoughts. She practically sells supplements in the book, most are mega doses of micronutrients which any legitimate nutrition professional will tell you to be cautious of. Mainly she never even mentions credible nutrition research organizations when telling people where to turn for info, Instead she recommends supplement sales people for advice. HELLO-taking your money and BIASED! This book does give validity to the connection between mood and nutrition-HOWEVER Credible nutrition professionals have letters behind their name and sign a code of ethics-high standards to which they will be held to- this Ms. Shannon has not agreed to not advertise erroneous information. It's not worth the ink and paper used to print it. ... Read more

Book Description

Since all women experience menopause differently, shouldn't there be more than one treatment? For decades, it was estrogen that was supposedly the ultimate cure-all for "the change." Recently, progesterone has been touted as the most effective menopause treatment. Dr. Joseph Collins reveals there is no magic hormone or combination of hormones that can be indiscriminately prescribed to all women. In fact, he has identified 12 different types of menopause, each requiring a treatment that is as unique as the women experiencing it.

In What's Your Menopause Type? you'll discover Dr. Collin's revolutionary program designed to help you take charge of this life stage. Using a revealing questionnaire, he shows you how to determine your own menopause type and then prescribes the best nutritional, herbal, glandular, or hormonal treatment for your unique symptoms. He also provides everything you need to know to better understand this stage of life such as:

Which natural and conventional treatments are best for you—and which to avoid
How to weigh the risks and benefits of hormone-replacement therapy
A complete description of hormones and their effects on your body
Advice on how to order hormone tests
Suggestions for choosing a "hormone educated" doctor
And much, much more!

With the help of Dr. Collins and this empowering book, you can take charge of menopause and get on with your life!

"At last, a well-referenced resource for pharmacists, other health-care professionals, and women on the advantages of natural vs. synthetic hormone-replacement therapy. This book is the ammunition that many need to prove the value of natural hormone replacement." —Dana Reed-Kane, Pharm.D., F.A.C.A, F.I.A.C.P.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave new perspective...
I have read the books - all the good ones I thought; I've researched the treatments; I've talked (& talked...) to several physicians, to other women - nothing has even come close to this book. This makes sense! We are all so unique - biologically, psychologically, chemically; why would our passage through menopause not be unique as well? Of course it is!

Well written, logical & filled with simple yet revolutionary new alternatives to use immediately for the irritation, anxiety, memory-lapses, hot flashes, night sweats, you-name-it... that you're experiencing, the book gives you some control over what you're experiencing.

I knew I was doing something wrong (though I was trying almost everything!), but didn't know what. Now the pieces fit!

Beg, borrow or steal if you have to, but get a copy for your home library; you'll refer to it again & again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woman,40+years old? Run, don't walk, to buy this book!
Finally, sense to the confusing passage of menopause. Why do some women hardly notice the change at all? Why does one do well on estrogen while another, natural progesterone only? Why do some women's discomforts resolve while others continue to baffle? Not only does Dr. Collins make all of this simple to understand, but he offers straight forward protocol for analyzing, understanding and prescribing for the whole range of individual differences of menopause. What a relief, to see light through the tunnel. The book is in my back pocket. The appointment is made. My Naturopath and I now have the tools to mend my menopausal way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practicing doctors prespective
I am a practicing Naturopathic Physician. Dr Collins, has provided me with a great tool to further my understanding of the complexity of menopause. I have had cases that have not responded to what was a resonable treatment plan. After reading "What's your menopause type" I now have a new insight into those patients and their needs. To have the "types" defined and put into categories lends to a greater understanding for the practitioner. The "menopause Type Questionnaire", combined with the labatory hormone levels is very useful information that should help everyone who is working with this transitional time in a womans life. The information on the nutrition and supplements is excellent. I applaud Dr Collins for his commitment and dedication to an area of medicine that is in great need of more information and understanding. If you are practitioner who deals with menopausal patients, I strongly suggest you read and understand what Dr collins has to say. If you are not a practitioner but would like a better understanding of menopause, this is a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Your Menopause Type?
While reading "What's Your Menopause Type?", one can feel the heart felt compassion of the author. His writing is down to earth, easy to understand, and the resource information is invaluable. This book enables you to take control of your own life. Dr. Collins has finally put to rest the old myth that menopause is the same for all women. I would suggest that every man read this book, especially to help them understand their loved ones. As well as having valuable information on nutrition, herbs and hormones, he gives the reader access to a web site that will enable them to find physicians and pharmacists that are commented to treating each menopausal woman. I know I will keep this book in my library as a valuable resource, and I would like to personally thank Dr. Collins for his sensitivity with respect to woman and menopause.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally a book that gets rid of the hit-or-miss, one-size-fits-all, try-anything-that-might-work-to-get-relief approach to treating peri-menopause and menopause. Progesterone cream just wasn't doing anything for me......and rightly so....from taking the test in the book, I learned that progesterone is NOT what I need. I also didn't recognise some of my symptoms as being menopausal until I read about my specific type. Now I have a better understanding of why I have been so miserable these last 2 1/2 years and I have the tools to get better! I bought the book two days ago, started an herbal formula program today, and I already feel better. Every woman over 40 needs this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars concise, and reliable for daily practice, awaiting new edition
Handbook includes disease states, and categorizes medications of primary choice, and provides secondary alternatives. There are excellent abbreviated text outlining etiology and pathophysiological parameters. As well as step wise flow charts as a decision tool and guideline. The tables for medication dosing and comparability between different classes of drugs are extremely helpful, visually and content wise! In hospital pharmacy practice, this handbook has been my peripheral brain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great, if technical, overview of PCOS
It can be a bit difficult to wade through some of the medical information in this book. However, it is vital reading for any of the 5-10% of women who have PCOS. Information truly is power when you suffer from PCOS. This book is a great basis for understanding this syndrome, deciding on treatment, and explaining PCOS to your family, friends, and others.

This is the best overview of PCOS available. Thatcher covers all of the important information and offers explanations of treatments available. Many women with PCOS are not getting the treatment they need because their doctors overlook symptoms or assume that PCOS is a cosmetic problem or a fertility issue. Get this book, read it, then use your newfound knowledge to get the treatment you deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars PCOS Patients!!! Look no further! Help is here!
Living with PCOS can be extremely difficult for females, but hope and understanding are found in Dr. Thatcher's newest book! Dr. Thatcher provides easy to understand information concerning PCOS, along with the encouragement that PCOS patients are not few and far between. This book is a necessity for all PCOS patients! PCOS: The Hidden Epidemic allows PCOS patients, along with others, to gain the knowledge needed to completely understand what is going on in the body of a woman suffering from PCOS and the treatments that she must undergo. For a clear understanding of PCOS, Dr. Thatcher's book is the #1 choice!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too technical
This book was obviously written by a doctor and is written so that only other doctors can understand it. It would have been nice to have this complicated syndrome explained for the everyday person. If you can get through all the technical mumbo jumbo, then it's a good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad...
This is the first book I have gotten on PCOS. It is good on explaining things but it goes into too much technical detail on how the body works. I would have liked it better if it was in more of a laymans terms. In my opinion this is a book more for a doctor then a patient.

I do like the book, don't get me wrong. My doctor has had more use with it then me however.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book is definitely a must have for anyone women with PCOS! It's so informative and covers everything you need to know. Whenever I have a question I always refer back to it. ... Read more
