Book Description

This is the 3rd edition of a classic text which still represents the only multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation and management of a high-risk pregnancy. Since most chapters are written by a 2-author team (an anesthesiologist and an obstetrician or fetologist), information will be efficiently formated, practical, and complete. Coverage will include causes of the health risk, pathophysiology, obstetric treatment written by an obstetrician, and anesthetic management written by an obstetric anesthesiologist. Chapters will include the latest procedures and most advanced technology. They will cover the parameters used to observe fetal well-being and deal with abnormal findings, regardless of the stage of development. Topics will extend through the delivery and post delivery periods. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the book and found it a very good read
I bought this book in order to obtain facts on incontinence and to know what would happen at a doctors office in order to diagnose and cure the problem. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable it was to read a book like this and found the author was factual as well as personable.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an incontinence problem or is pregnant.

5-0 out of 5 stars first of its kind
I think Dr. Goldberg has written a book that will be a godsend to countless women. The largely unspoken problems he addresses are potentially devastating to women. He has outlined not only treatment options - but preventative measures.

The book is well designed and easy to follow. I think it is invaluable ... Read more

This incredibly thorough and insightful interpretation of what it means to be consciously female in today's tumultuous times is a must read, not only for every woman, but also for any man who has a woman in his life. Dr. Gaudet's clear grasp of the interconnectedness of the mind, body, spirit, and community to health and wellness is right on target and it demands serious consideration when one is determining what course of action to take with regard to health matters. Her innovative approaches, which help us focus on how we think of our bodies and how we treat our bodies, are easy to understand and incorporate into our lives. Her sensitivity to the issues and her understanding of the impacts on our health are the foundations for the wisdom every reader will discover in this book. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but...
I agree with the other (all 5-star) ratings up to this point--the book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
    1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
    2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series.
    3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.

Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes."

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the OB/Gyn clerkship
This is great for MSIIIs starting their OB/Gyn Clerkship--it covers all of the high points of the field in a very clear format and prepares students well for their Shelf exam at the end of the rotation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
If you don't want to plow through 600+ pages of Beckmann, or some other text (i.e. you aren't aiming to specialize in OB/Gyn), you'll love this book. Information is well organized and easy to get through if you enjoy the First Aid format. I never liked the texts...I loved the BRS outline style and First Aid books. I haven't taken the shelf exam yet, but as for my last 2 months on the wards, this book has been a great resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation
The authors have done an outstanding job. This book manages to simplify what is normally complex. A great tool for students.

5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* OB/GYN Book for your pocket...
You can tell the medical students at your local teaching hospital. They're the ones with the short lab coats and the pockets bulging with small paper-back books.

For those who are in training to become a Doctor a premium is placed on easily-accessible, highly accurate and important information. I remember going through my clinical rotations and thinking that I needed a "pocket" book for every medical rotation to supplement my massive 20-pound, $100 texts while I was on the wards and in the clinic.

Early into my OB/GYN Residency I got the hot scoop - THIS is the book to keep in your lab-coat if you're practicing OB/GYN. By the time I was a chief resident this book had saved me time and heartache and saved my patients from my blunders over and over. Like all "pocket" texts, this one doesn't contain lengthy discussions. But it DOES contain what you need to get through that night on OB/GYN call. And the next one.... and the next.

The treatment for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (and hundreds of other common clinical situations)- before it's burned into your brain it's right here at your fingertips. It even gives you concise "go-by's" for how to dictate your operative reports for the most common OB/GYN surgeries.

Since I got my first one a decade ago I've never NOT had a copy of this in my lab coat. I use it infrequently now, but when young trainees seem to need a push towards a clue - I push them towards this little gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The PERFECT handbook for ANYONE in OB/GYN
This handbook survival guide is a FAST, accurate, useful way to reference any topic in Ob/GYN & Infertility.
As a medical student, this book has allowed me to shine many times over while on my OB/GYN rotation. All students and beyond should own this book. In fact, I feel extremely confident taking my national OB/GYN exam after studying and learning this book. EVERYTHING you need to know is broken down in an easy to read, organized, precise manner containing the most relevant needed information on a topic. Residents and attendings have been amazed at my depth of knowledge since I've read this book. What more could you ask for...

5-0 out of 5 stars OB/GYN Must Have
This book is a must have for any clinician working with Obstetrics and Gynocology. This pocket sized reference covers critical topics and provides immediate answers to questions of issues that arise for anyone working with female patients. The book has easy to read algorithms and charts, information on all aspects of Gyn practice, including uro-gynocology and oncologic staging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obstetrics Gynecology & Infertility Review
This book continues to be a must have for everybody interested in or practicing Ob/Gyn. It is certainly the most convenient pocket reference anyone can expect to have.

This revision is definitely worth the investment, with updated information in all the disciplines within the field. New additions include the B-Lynch suture, expanded cancer staging and treatment algorhythms as well as expanded information on HRT. I highly reccomend picking up the 5th edition to add to your pocket!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every page is a must-know.
I bought this 5th edition on Amazon.com and it is worth DHL freight.

    Book Description

Mammography can be thought of as a (sub)macroscopic 'shadow pathology' - confident diagnosis necessitates comprehensive knowledge of breast pathology. The traditional rules of thumb, for example that a regular, rounded shadow means a benign lesion, a radiating structure represents a malignant tumor, and microcalcification indicates biopsy, no longer hold true. This volume aims to explain modern breast pathology to physicians practicing mammography. The over 600 individual illustrations and more than 1,000 references help the reader understand breast morphology. The book is rounded off by a detailed description of the clinical symptoms and a helpful summary of the supplementary diagnostic procedures and the possibilities for treatment. ... Read more

    Book Description

    WHY NOW? WHY ME?

Today, millions of women in their twenties and thirties, many of whom are just beginning to plan a family, are receiving the shocking news that their reproductive years are already over. They are in premature menopause -- menopause years before its time. Whether due to an autoimmune disorder, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or the often undiagnosed condition known as Premature Ovarian Failure (POF), premature menopause is common, increasing -- and almost always traumatic.

If you are one of the women experiencing early menopause, you have hundreds of questions, but have probably found few answers...until now. The Premature Menopause Book is the first book focusing on this difficult transition -- written by a woman who faced the same questions: What can I do about it? Do I need hormones? How can I have a baby despite this condition? How can I feel like "me" again?

The Premature Menopause Book provides the latest information on health and emotional issues, explores all of your options, lists resources, websites and support groups, shares the experiences and advice of women going through this experience, answers frequently asked questions and offers the support and understanding you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars READ THIS BOOK FIRST BEFORE THE OTHERS!!
"The Premature Menopause Book: When The Change Comes Too Early", should be the FIRST book you read if given the diagnosis of POF (or premature menopause). After my diagnosis of POF, I read any and all material I could find on menopause. All they did was confuse me! These other books were written for women in their late 40's to late 50's. I am 36! "The Premature Menopause Book: When The Change Comes To Early", is wonderful. It answers alot of questions and gives you support! I read this book before I went to my doctor to talk about HRT (hormone replacement therapy). I'm glad I did. I was better able to understand what my doctor was talking about, and I feel, make better decisions about HRT than if I had not read this book.

I can't say enough about it. BUY IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars When Menopause Comes too Early
Kathryn Petras' book The Premature Menopause Book is the only book out on book shelves that deals with this very importtant topic. As the founder and creator of HotFlash! the perimenopause/menopause web site and online support group I have interviewed Kathy and read her book. Her compassion and breath of knowledge is incredible. She has helped literally thousands of women through her book and drive to make this once unknown health challenge get the attention it deserves. In dealing with the media and in consulting with women, I have found that women AND men want to know all they can about perimenopause and menopause. While folks are still catching up on what menopause means to the average woman, Kathy has broken ground in talking about the health challenges, emotional struggles, and the reality of hitting menopause, (which traditionally occurs at age 51) while still being thirty or even twenty. Doctors are finding more and more women, each day, are in early or premature menopause. Thankfully Kathyrn Petras has written a compassionate and informative book to help all women who are faced with a premature menopause.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You, Kathy Petras!
I was so relieved to find this book I am 33 and have been in chemotherapy induced menopause since I was 25! I was never able to find any information about menopause for someone my age until now. After reading this book and discussing the issues with my physician, she was more than willing to make changes to my hormone replacement therapy, but she had never mentioned there were any other options besides premarin and provera before. If I hadn't read this book, I would have never known what to ask! Thanks again, Kathy! You are a blessing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Lifesaver
I am 34 and was diagnosed with Premature Medipause two weeks before I finally found this book. That was two weeks of Hell! I was depressed, confused and an emotional mess. I cried all the time. I thought I was going insane. Then I got this book. It truely explains not just the medical and physical traits of this condition, it also goes into the feeling of unexplainable loss. I felt like someone truely understood how I felt. The short statements from many other women with this rare condition were so helpful for me. These feeling are so hard to explain to family or friend. Thank you so much for writing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I saw the author on Good Morning America and had to rush out to get it. The book is just as informative, comforting and compassionate as the author seemed on TV. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great follow up to Before the Change
I have become a real fan of Ann Louise Gittleman's work. I first learned of her through her book Before the Change and picked this one up shortly thereafter. A great follow up because Super Nutrition for Menopause deals with concerns of the older woman like diabetes and osteoporosis. I think this book would make a good Mother's Day or Birthday Gift because it is a gift of health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers a safer, more natural approach to managing menopause
This easy to read and user friendly book is a wealth of helpful information especially for those of us making this next transition in life. The book explains in understandable terms what menopause is, what its most common symptoms are, and the different ways it may be experienced.

Especially helpful was the recommended Vitamin E dosage and the natural progesterone cream which greatly helps hot flashes. Thank you Ann Louise Gittleman for another outstanding and timely book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Labor and Birth
As one who has been studying the science of midwifery for three years, I can say that I have loved this book! There are many reasons for this love:
    1) HL&B covers nearly every conceivable obstetrical topic succinctly yet thoroughly. If you want the low-down on anything from umbilical cords to breech delivery to sacculation of the uterus, this is the book to go to! You won't find any extraneous content: this is a textbook through and through - it cuts to the chase!
    2) I appreciated the author's comprehensive coverage of medical options. A lot of textbooks (esp. nursing texts) are of the mentality "when this happens, this is what you do" whereas this book presents all options for treatment management (even though you might probably end up doing what the nursing text says!), as well as prognosis info.
    3) The illustrations (hand-drawn) are immensely helpful and quite plentiful.
    4) HL&B is compact (1.5" x 6" x 9"), so when wanting to study on the go, this was the definite choice.

The only drawback to this book is that it is a paperback (I am unaware if it is available in hardcover). Notwithstanding, I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying obstetrics at any level. ... Read more

“Superior to other case file books.”
--Chang-Kun Choi, Medical Student, Midwestern University School of Medicine

“Using clinical scenarios not only makes the reading fun and interesting, but it is far more engaging than sitting down with a bulleted text and reviewing detail after detail. This is a much better way to learn clinical information. I have not read a book like this before, and I certainly have enjoyed it.”
-–Eric Hossler, Medical Student, James H. Quillen College of Medicine

“I LOVED this book!I would recommend this book to all third-year students… The book uses a clinical approach and does not lose sight of the pathophysiology behind the disease -- GREAT preparation for being on the wards! The subject matter is also deceptively detailed, with much more information than one normally finds in a text of case files. The reader can use this book as either a rigorous self-test or a read-through introduction to the subject.Once again - a GREAT text!”

5-0 out of 5 stars 4th year medical student.
I just received my USMLE STEP 2 results and I scored very well in OB/GYN and the only OB/GYN material I used to prepare was the above book. Unlike other review books, the mechanism of each case is explained and related to a clinical scenario and I found this very helpful. I would highly recommend this book to any medical student taking the OB/GYN rotation or board exam. ... Read more
