5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Menopause : Every Woman's Guide to Good
This book was given to me by my son's mother-in-law who is a retired nurse. It was written by women for all women. It is written with a great deal of sensitivity. The medical information in this book has been extremely useful to me, and it's not the typical one-size-fits all information that I have read or heard before. I recommend it highly and thank the authors for their conscientious effort (and my consuegra for giving it to me). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Breast Implant information, and more!!!!
For any serious attorney or physician who works with breast implant issues, this is the book (and CD) for you. Two of my recent clients who are claimants in the pending Dow Corning Settlement will be very happy that I purchased this book and CD. In only 10 minutes I was able to identify the manufacture of my clients' breast implants down to the make, model and year. The imaging is outstanding. This book is the only reliable source for plastic surgeons to properly identify explanted implants (identification necessary for participation in the Dow Corning Settlement). Enough cannot be said about this work! Outstanding! It is a masterpiece of well over 12,000 hours of meticulous study and research... Doctors Middleton & McNamara you should get an award for this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Gem in the Recal Series
Second only to Surgical Recall in the series, this was an invaluable tool for preparation, particularly on the mornings or evenings prior to GYN surgery. Use it to review the pertinent anatomy and physiology prior to attendance in the OR and you will be rewarded by escaping that uncomfortable silence that ensues when you don't have a clue to those inevitable pimps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obstetrics and Gynecology Recall
This was an excellent review for your OB/GYN rotation. It presented a concise review and excellent preparation for questions on rounds and in the OR. Covered more than enough for your OB/GYN rotation and can be very useful in an internship. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITE NECESSITY FOR WOMAN
AN EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK FOR ALL WOMEN AS THEY AGE GRACEFULLY AND AT SAME TIME IT IS EASY TO READ. THE BOOK IS FULL OF PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS AND OPTIONS THAT ALL WOMEN SHOULD BE AWARE OF TO HELP HER THROUGH THIS TRANSITION TIME. THE LAYOUT OF THE BOOK MAKES IT EASY FOR READERS TO FIND PERTINENT INFORMATIONS QUICKLY. THE INFORMATION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF FACTORS THAT YOU CAN CONTROL SUCH AS EXERCISE, FOODS WE CONSUME, AND SLEEP WAS EXCELLENT.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for women going through the "change"!
This book is a lot like a "What to Expect When You're Expecting" for those of us going through menopause. It's so easy to read and to find whatever information you need about pretty much anything having to do with menopause and the time leading up to it (which I now know is called "perimenopause"). Every woman going through the change should get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone going through perimenopause
After looking through many books on perimenopause, I found this to be one of the most comprehensive and the easiest to read. The book is very balanced and gave me a much better picture of the issues that we face as we go through perimenopause and the evidence for the different remedies available to help. The authors cover hormones, natural remedies, and other therapies in a way that I could clearly understand what we do and don't know about them and what the advantages and disadvantages of using the different approaches. I felt that the book was right on the mark in so many areas. It was really helpful because I was having problems with my periods and when I went to see my doctor, I already knew what to expect and what tests would be done and why. It helped greatly ease my mind because I felt so much better prepared. This is definately a book to keep on hand as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book is exceptionally well written. The authors have taken complex topics and have explained them in down-to-earth terms. Any woman going through this adventure can find herself on these pages and understand what and why things are happening as they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book for Ladies in Menopause
I highly recomend this book, Healthy Transitions, by Dr. Edmund S. Kim. I shared this book with my other church friends and advocate it to all women. I especially enjoyed the section on What's With My Moods? Ch. 4 in the book. ... Read more

This lively and readable book provides basic pregnancy and preconception advice for lesbians and their partners. Concentrating on topics of special interest to lesbian families--such as choosing an anonymous donor, drafting agreements with known donors, and defining the nonbiological mother's parenting role--it also suggests how and when to inseminate and walks the reader through a normal full-term pregnancy and delivery. Despite its title, however, the book cannot really substitute for a comprehensive guide to pregnancy along the lines of What to Expect When You're Expecting, and the breezy section on labor will be of little use when you feel mysterious twinges in your 39th week (or your 29th). This would be best as a first book to buy when considering pregnancy, or as an addition to other, more detailed guides. (However, the section on sex during pregnancy does provide lesbian-specific advice unlikely to be found anywhere else.) --Regina Marler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical information & an entertaining read
Excellent book. Very useful information on every page. Other books on the same topic do not get down to the "nitty-gritty" as this book does. The author shares invaluable personal information. It's like having a friend offer advice and support. Very helpful resource list in the back. Also has a good index. Perfect for lesbians trying to become pregnant, but not knowing where or how to begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
I found this book to be especially helpful during the trying-to-conceive and early pregnancy phases. Once my pregnancy was well underway, I relied more heavily upon other resources for more complete pregnancy info. Nevertheless, this book was absolutely indispensable to me during the emotionally challenging process of selecting a donor, using intrauterine insemination, managing medical issues (infertility, health insurance, etc.), and coping with early setbacks. The numerous quotes from others who have "been there" helped to normalize my feelings and experiences, while the author's matter of fact tone demystified the process and helped me know what to expect next. The tips for staying sane while trying were all relevant and useful. I read this book over and over for comfort when my partner and I felt like the only ones who'd ever felt what we were feeling, and for information about choices others have made under similar circumstances. A truly useful, comforting, practical and essential book for any lesbians trying to conceive. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
This book helpd my partner and I feel as though we could meet the challenges of lesbian motherhood without losing our minds or our relationship

5-0 out of 5 stars The ulitimate book on DI - be you gay or straight!!!
This book is great!!!! It is a sad world we live in when authors believe that only lesbians are having donor insemination. I bought this book becuase I was desparate for information and the one book I found for straight women gave me no information. This title kept popping up, so I bought it. I am currently on chapter 4 and cannot believe how much information I have already learned. I look forward to reading each page. Rachel Pepper writes with a positive tone, uplifting and funny, while being informative. I have a notebook filled with questions and plans. This is the only prepregnancy book you will need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
This is a wonderful book that gives you all the confidence you need to begin to create a family. Helpfull advice is mixed with resource contacts and 'what to expect when you are expecting' pointers. The author writes from experiance and personal trial and error and does a super job of covering all the bases from legal issues to home births! ... Read more

During the past ten years diagnostic ultrasound has been one of the fastest growing fields in medicine, thanks to constant advances in technology and the development of new techniques which take advantage of these advances.

The combination of ultrasound and mammography provides the specialist great diagnostic flexibility, as ultrasound is effective in cases where mammography is inappropriate, or other situations in which mammography proves inconclusive.

This book is intended to provide concrete examples of both rare and commonly encountered breast pathologies, and an outline of the techniques and technologies which are currently being used in the field. It is the hope of the authors and collaborators that this work will prove to be a valuable aid for the specialist and will contribute to the early and reliable diagnosis of breast pathologies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Out dated
More recent books on the market have more up to date information. A better one would be Midlife Motherhood, by Jann Blackstone-Ford.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative book
I have to disagree with other reviewers who have found this book discouraging and scary. I have had the opposite reaction. I found this book very encouraging and informative. For example, the author talks about certain medical problems occurring more for older moms than younger moms (e.g., gestational diabetes and hypertension). The author also points out that moms of all ages face these medical problems, and that age is only one factor that increases your chances of having these conditions (weight is another factor). I also like the fact that the author clearly asserts that age alone does not make a pregnancy high-risk.

The author also cites empirical research throughout the book, and anecdotal research as well. She also provides statistics that I found refreshing (e.g., in the 1920's, the average age for having a last baby was 42, and in 1945 57 in 1000 women aged 35 to 39 had babies). She follows these statistics by saying, "contemporary women are mostly very different from their ancestors at age 35 and over and have great advantages..." She then goes on to talk about how contemporary women have many strengths, including better prenatal care.

I learned a great deal about how to prepare for conception in reading this book, including fertility awareness, and the possible impact of substances such as caffeine on fertility. I learned that although scientific studies indicate that fertility takes a dip around age 35 and a larger dip around age 39, every day nearly 1200 babies are born to American mothers between 35 and 44. I found this to be another encouraging piece of information. Before reading this book, I was not aware of everything to address in the preconception physical exam with a physician, such as catching up on immunizations and learning whether there are environmental hazards in your community or workplace.

Perhaps most reassuring to me was this, "Outside of the increase in chromosomal abnormalities, a healthy 35-plus woman without pregnancy complications is as likely as a younger woman to have a baby without medical problems." Even so, for a 37 year old woman, the risk of having a Down's syndrome baby is 1 in 227. The book is highly informative about a range of other issues too, such as amniocentesis and other prenatal tests, and your pregnancy month by month.

I highly recommend this book and found it to be supportive, encouraging, practical, and backed up by research.

2-0 out of 5 stars Scary and Discouraging
Someone gave me this book when I became pregnant with my first child at age 34. I have to agree with most of the other reviewers. This book does absolutely NOTHING to settle the mind of a woman of "advanced maternal age." Get "What to Expect When You're Expecting" instead. It's gentle and encouraging and most of the info applies to expectant moms of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars encouraging and practical
I found the information in the book to be quite positive and helpful. It's not overly scientific but does provide the information most needed for women over 35 to make pregnancy decisions.

2-0 out of 5 stars too little, too late
There is very littl information on pregnancy itself in this book, but LOTS aobut how horribly difficult it is to get and stay pregnant if you are older.

I found this book uninformative and scary. I much prefer Your Over-35 Week by Week Pregnancy Guide. It has lots of information, is well organized and easy to read and is thorough without being scary. ... Read more

Book Description

The classic guide to gentle birth that revolutionized the way wewelcome our children into the world.
* The first book to express what mothers have always known: babies are born complete human beings with the ability to experience a full range of emotions.
* Shows how gentle lighting, a quiet atmosphere, and a warm bath allow a newborn to ease the transition from womb to world without trauma or fear.
* New translation overseen by the author himself; also includes a new author preface.

Birth without Violence revolutionized the way we perceive the process of birth, urging us to consider birth from the infant's point of view. Why must a child emerge from the quiet darkness of the womb into a blaze of blinding light and loud voices? Why must an infant take its first breath in terror, hanging upside down as its vulnerable spine is jerked straight? Why must the infant be separated from its mother after spending nine months inside her nourishing body?

Examining alternatives to technocentric approaches to childbirth, this classic text shows us how we can create an environment of tranquillity in which to welcome our children: a relaxed mother, gentle lighting, soothing atmosphere, and a warm bath that mirrors the child's prenatal surroundings. Dr. Leboyer's simple techniques show us how a birth without violence has far-reaching implications for improving the quality of human life physically, emotionally, and spiritually. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Birth with dignity and respect for babies
After four hospital births, I was finally fed up with impersonal childbirth. This book was one of the first books I read while preparing for the homebirth of our fifth child. It was one of the few birth books that evoked respect for babies and peace at birth as opposed to a clinical presentation of birth. Our culture needs more books of this sort to show women that we need to birth our babies in a much more dignified manner, taking into consideration a genuine love for babies. Expectant couples everywhere should take a look at "Birth without Violence." Beautiful writing style and great photos!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love your baby - and weep
Get this book, even if you're going for "normal" hospital birth anyway. Reading it and posting copies of some pictures and "poems" in my baby's room stirred so much compassion for him in me, so that I hardly ever had a hard time with all his crying. This will help you love your baby more, and the way it's written will really move your heart!! (Even my practical, no-nonsense husband read all the way through it!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in common sense, poetic beauty
This book is so full of common sense, compassion and beauty while still being founded upon simple yet so often unpracticed scientific priciples that is almost annoying to read. "How is it possible that we haven't been doing this for ten thousand years? How is it possible that we don't do this today as a matter of course?"; these will be just some of the first questions that will pop up in your mind. It is so clearly written and so important, that the attributes of this not just life-altering but culture-altering book about the first moments of life for a newborn child cannot be understated. It reads, and to a large degree is constructed, like great poetry--in much the same way the work of Galileo and Darwin and Alice Miller and Stephen Hawking read like epic poetic novels as they sing with human, universal truths.

One of the most beautiful things about this book is LeBoyer's confident, unashamed way of admitting that he merely observed a small, hidden community in India and their childbirthing practices. He discovered that their lives in this aspect, and those of their children, were a reflection of, according to Western medical principles, a scientific impossibility. With that discovery he saw the differences between the simplicity of nature, the imposed myopia of culture and the limitlessness of human potential--in an area of human life where he once unconsciously (like most of us) thought the three were essentially one and the same. He then allowed that to forever change his life. Consequently, given what he learned, he wrote this masterpiece (given its easy to digest structure, poetic/psychological tone and its overwhelming lack of antecedents), and changed ours. The cultural/philosophical and spiritual bridge from the West to the East he created by this approach to childbirthing is momumental in its implications, in a way most of the New Age literature of the past thirty plus years, including that of American writers who willingly reveal their Eastern philosophical inspiration, really just isn't.

This is a beautiful book. I have one wonderful son. If and when I have other children, this book charts how they will essentially come into the world and spend their first moments in it. I'll see to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a kinder & gentler way ...
interspersed between a few quotes, dialogue & lots of beautiful black-&-white photographs, this book is written like a long, free-verse, stream-of-consciousness poem about how beautiful childbirth can be when done without all the bright lights, loud noises, yanking, stretching & slapping of "traditional" (read: "unnecessary intervention") hospital deliveries.

this highly readable book will make you wonder why it ever had to be done that way in the 1st place?

(in my opinion, it probably has a lot to do with the male-dominated world of western medicine & their irrational space-age [read: godless] belief that hard, cold & sterile intervention is far superior to going with the flow of nature's [read: God's] ready-made birth process!)

& due to the inherent beauty of its subject matter, this book would make a great gift for just about anyone interested in children & the process of childbirth -- not just for the mother-to-be!

(although i would definitely give it to a mother-to-be if i thought she was just going to blindly trust herself, her body & her baby to the harsh processes of a "traditional" hospital delivery. in fact, in this dire case, i would have a WHOLE ARMFUL of reading material to give to her! but i would probably start with THIS book, because it is the most unthreateningly eloquent in startling one to the realization that there might be a kinder & gentler way ... )

&, because of its great beauty, i would unabashedly keep this one on the coffee table (if i had one!) for all to see ... :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary
I think this a very thought provoking book. If more births were carried out this way, the rate of C-Sections and Epidural births would decrease. Every woman should take an active part in her birth process, and this book provides a gateway into self knowledge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars After Breast Cancer: Answers to the Questions You're Afraid
Relief. Laughter. Tears. A knowing nod. A chill. I devoured this book, hungrily,as I read my sister's stories. As a breast cancer survivor, I was told repeatedly by my care providers "not to worry"... "you have beat this"... "walk away now"... "close this chapter of the book"... "move on"... But how do we do that when the fact remains that almost half of all women diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC), as I was, eventually die of the disease? I felt misunderstood... made to feel a bit of the hypochondriac, as I visited my oncologist with each back pain... each unrelenting headache... each persistant cough? WHEN WILL I FINALLY STOP LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER? And then I read this book. Musa Mayer writes from her own experience as a breast cancer survivor, using her skills as a therapist and as a patient advocate. I finally feel like someone understands. She writes brilliantly, with clarity of vision and a spirited, confident heart. She reveals the experiences of many, MANY women who share my fears, without diminishing my own. She understands, yes... yet the book's greatest gift is the knowledge that I am not alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book To Read When Treatment Ends
Of all the books out there on breast cancer survival, this one is the very best. It is full of first hand accounts from people who have coped with treatment and the after effects of breast cancer.

Unlike many of the fluff books on the market about breast cancer survival, this book is organized into sections that cover the various fears and topics that concern the aftermath of treatment. It goes beyond other books by presenting factual and helpful information everyone needs to face those fears and make logical decisions concerning follow up testing.

I read this book in one sitting and wish it had been written when my treatment ended. Every breast cancer patient should have this book and so should their oncologist!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read after a breast cancer diagnosis
I purchased, After Breast Cancer: Answers to the Questions You're Afraid to Ask, for a friend of mine who was diagnosed with primary breast cancer two years ago. Before giving my friend the book, I read it, so I would not be suggesting a book that might "scare" her. Having metastatic breast cancer myself, I found myself wishing I would have had such a resource after my initial diagnosis. The book is extremely well-written and addresses all of the key issues of dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. It's educational and offers the patient a "take-charge" mentality of a breast cancer diganosis. This book is a "must read" for women (and men) who are dealing with or have dealt with breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for anyone just finishing treatment
Although I had heard from others that finishing treatment can be unexpectedly hard, it still came as a surprise. I have held it together pretty well, I think, through everything that had happened to me (diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer whilst pregnant). But I really did lose the plot a bit for a while, when it had all finished. This book has helped tremendously. It is a MUST for anyone just finishing treatment. Really wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Support and Information
This book confronts the issue of breast cancer recurrence head on with excellent information and quotes from others going through the situation. Without a doubt this book helped change my perspective on this issue and helped me cope with wondering if this one bout of breast cancer was/is my last, or if it's lurking in the future somewhere. I've returned to re-read sections of this book many times and each time I gain new perspective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars At least 10 Shelf questions...
I used this book in preparation for the Shelf exam in OB/GYN and it was extremely helpful. Several questions on the exam were straight out of these vignettes. The varied style- some case info, some reading, some questions- for each vignette helped to maintain focus, and for me provided a much better prep than just the short questions found in many other books. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Children: From Aller..
This is an excellent book for all mothers, especially new ones. Whilst it is not designed to be a substitute for a doctor's visit or opinion, it does give good guidelines for when to go to a doctor/emergency as well as, when and what you can do at home. I have found it particularly helpful when my daughter had croup, we knew what to do at home and were aware of signs that told us when an emergency visit was needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Gift for New Parents
I've given copies of this book to all my relatives and many friends after their babies were born. The title is a bit misleading ... it's much more than home remedies and is not intended as a substitute for pediatricians. This well-organized book covers a broad range of potential concerns (from colds, behavior problems, discipline techniques, rashes, ticks, and allergies to more serious diseases) and ages (babies to teens), offering information that is easily understandable yet fairly comprehensive and to the point. It can help parents understand what's "normal" and specifies when a visit to a doctor is imperative/advisable. It's useful as a reference, allowing a parent to review the child's symptoms before a visit to the doctor and perhaps ask "better" questions (or provide "better" information) during the examination. ...
