Book Description

Consumer text provides invaluable insights into the variable effects reproductive organ surgery has on the body. Discusses personal experiences in a variety of scenarios, including complete hysterectomy, hysterectomy with one and two ovaries removed, tubal ligation, and resolution without surgery.

This powerful, insightful book offers in-depth information about the benefits and risks of hysterectomies through the personal accounts of women who have undergone the procedure. Every year, one million women face the decision of whether to have a hysterectomy. Two-thirds of the women who elect to have the procedure are glad that they did. The other third, however, experience unexpected consequences, including changes in sexual desire. This book reveals the real stories behind what most physicians and their patients consider a simple surgical procedure. Women whose lives and families have been affected share their heartfelt stories so that other women facing similar decisions have all the facts they need. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile information
Two years ago, I did not read hysterectomy stories. Friends told me not to read "that stuff", since I was so strong, and mine would be a breeze. Much of medical literature even suggests that women who have problems post surgery are just "problem women."
Unfortunately, my surgery was not a breeze. Turns out a hysterectomy was actually counterindicated for my problems, the surgeon did not have the proper skills, and I am now faced with years of diminished quality of life and possible delicate restorative surgery which may or may not work.
I don't think information or stories in this book are meant to "scare", but to help women ask the right questions, demand proper care and assessment and make an informed decision. Good doctors welcome informed and inquisitive patients. I highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating hysterectomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
In her first book, Your Guide to Hysterectomy, Ovary Removal & Hormone Replacement, Elizabeth Plourde dared to express what is sadly often inadmissable in our culture - the outrage, pain and loss she experienced when waking from surgery to find that necessary and vital feminine organs were removed without her consent. She, like untold numbers of women, was launched into an challenged existance of physical disability, when unnaturally deprived of her critical hormone-producing ovaries, in particular.During her recovery, she began an unprecendented process of research into the effects of complete hysterectomy, that spanned 16 years, coming up with valuable information on the potential long term effects of ovary removal, which are rarely available to women who are seeking to understand all dimensions of this surgical process.
At the conclusion of this first book, Elizabeth invited women to share their stories with her, and thus compiled Hysterectomy? The Best or Worst Thing that Ever Happened to Me?
In creating this book, she has also given a forum to many other women ,to describe, and often process, their experiences after having surgery involving reproductive organ removal. A spectrum of stories result - some describing apparently beneficial results from hysterectomy, yet more describing very sobering consequences. These stories do not connote exaggeration and fear-mongering - they are narrations of personal life experience which all searching readers would do well to access.
Sustaining a hysterectomy, or deciding to have a hysterectomy, is monumental - although the numbers of this procedure done in this country defies that fact. Elizabeth Plourde is valiant in challenging the normalizing perception of this surgery, and in doing so, may spare countless numbers of women untold suffering, help to shift the paradigm amongst medical practitioners and validate women's rights to own and name their truths, despite social disapproval.
Thank you, Elizabeth Plourde, for your courage, dedication and perseverence! This is a book that has desperately needed to be written, and gives a critical voice, and a precious value, to many.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
I really liked this book. It was very interesting to read the different experiences of women who have had hysterectomies. It was great to see both sides of the coin and all those inbetween. I would urge anyone considering a hystectomy to read this book so you can see what some of the consequences might be and you can make an informed decision. ... Read more

The Endometriosis Sourcebook is "the definitive guide to current treatment options, the latest research, common myths about the disease, and coping strategies" compiled by the Endometriosis Association and its president, Mary Lou Ballweg. Ballweg lived with the disease for years, struggled through treatments and surgeries, was lucky enough to give birth to a "miracle baby," was bedridden for months at a time, and underwent a hysterectomy after all other treatment options were exhausted. She's therefore quite sympathetic toward fellow endo patients.

This all-inclusive book collects comparisons of different laser treatments; discusses the little-known connections between endo and autoimmune and thyroid problems, as well as diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome; covers new research directions; examines the effectiveness of Chinese medicine; shares letters from hundreds of women detailing their experiences; and much more. Perhaps most importantly, Ballweg strives to communicate how serious a disease endometriosis can be:

If there were millions of [men] out there, young men whose dreams were in danger of being destroyed by a disease, whose ability to function sexually was at risk, whose fertility was at risk, whose ability to build a satisfying work life and carry out normal activities of living was at risk, and who even would face the threat of castration, no one would dare say it was unimportant.

2-0 out of 5 stars this book lacks information on important topics
I picked up this book soon after I was diagnosed with endo. Although it had some good information, it lacked comprehensive information on the newest treatments for the disease, as well as any real information on new directions in clinical research. It frightens me to think that some women will pick up this book and not look further. The book fails to provide information on how women dealing with chronic pain from this disease can obtain the comprehensive, personalized type of help they need. Furthermore, the book fails to explore adequately how an increasing number of endometriosis surgeons are treating severe cases of endometriosis very much like cancer; both diseases need to be treated similarly surgically because both diseases require resection of both disease and the healthy margins surrounding the disease if a patient is to have any chance of a successful outcome. Perhaps most disconcerting is that this book does little to inspire or motivate women to become active consumers in their own health care - much more could be said about the continuing failure of the medical profession to diagnose and treat this disease as it should and a woman's need to respond accordingly. And, much more could be said about pain clinics and the pain specialists that can be the key to a woman learning to function with this disease. I eventually found Jennifer Lewis's book Endometriosis: One Women's Journey, and for the first time I no longer felt alone; I felt inspired to take real responsibility for my own health care; and I learned that there were pain professionals out there who could help give me my life back. For a sourcebook, this book is missing some really important pieces. It's okay for what it does, but be sure to supplement your reading with other books and materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sanity-saver
After several years of increasing pain, I was finally diagnosed with endometriosis. The first book I read on the subject contained numerous myths and misstatements and, quite frankly, made me feel very guilty for having "caused" myself to get this disease. When I found the Endometriosis Association and ordered this book, I could finally understand what was happening in my body, what others were going through, and the latest research. This book debunked the myths (including that a "cure" for endo is getting pregnant or that only women who delay childbearing for a career get it). It was no longer my fault and there were others out there in the same predicament, some much worse off. I learned about the theories of the causes of endometriosis, what it could look like, how it could be treated, the side-effects of various treatments, and the possibility of it affecting fertility. While covering this very serious illness extensively, this book also contained humor and life-affirming stories about women with the disease. I highly recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars conflict of interest
I don't know how an association that is majorly funded by a pharmaceutical company, which touts its medicines as good for endo, can write an impartial book on the subject.

The pharmaceutical company? It makes Lupron. Check out the Lupron Victims Network. Please be careful. These medications hurt. I should know. I was diagnosed with this disease in 2001 and have had surgeries for it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and dry
I thought this book would be more "down-to-earth" informative, but it is actually a collection of articles on endometriosis written by doctors and experts on the disease. I found it hard to read and not as instructive for the average sufferer as I had hoped. I did like the "Joe with Endo" cartoons throughout the book depicting what it would be like for a man to suffer with this malady, but I found most of the articles to be more like what one would find in a medical journal.

This book is just what I have been looking for! Every question answered and all sorts of useful information . If you are an endometriosis sufferer...this is the book for you. ... Read more

Many transcriptionists do not work just for one specialty like OB/GYN, but cover hospitals and clinics where many types of work are done and dictation must be transcribed. I have a shelf full of Stedman's books, and this is one that I refer to often. While much of my work is in heme-onc, that includes a couple of GYN heme-onc specialists, and so the book gets quite a workout.

Although the other review here is several years old, I cannot say "ditto" enough to the comments provided by that reviewer. Stedman's books, in general, are very helpful for the MT, and they update their publications on an ongoing basis. The hundreds of pages of cross-referenced terms specific to this field will be very helpful if you need correct terminology and spelling, etc., and are unconcerned with definition, photos, etc. These are just word books, and Stedman's books excel within that niche of the medical publishing marketplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must-have for the OB/GYN transcriptionist.
I have recently started working as a medical transcriptionist for several OB/GYNs. This book has been invaluable to me (and would be to anyone new to the field) because it not only lists each word, as a medical dictionary does, but also lists phrases as you would hear them, and matches words that would follow or preceed other words. When the doctor mumbles "lichen ___" I can just look up "lichen" and find 10 choice phrases that would include this word. This book has made my job much easier for me. ... Read more

Book Description

No More Periods?

Observing the radical shift in the medical community toward menstrual suppression as a viable option in women’s health, Dr. Rako sees not only a vast information gap for women, but a serious health crisis on the horizon. Drug companies and many health professionals are promoting the idea that it is okay, even preferable, for women to forgo their periods if they are not trying to get pregnant, and many women, when faced with the choice, are seriously considering that option. But what isn’t being discussed enough are the hazards of such suppression, risks that include osteoporosis, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.

In No More Periods? Dr. Rako delves into the whys, hows, and musts of women’s gynecological health and takes a reasoned stand for believing that nature and our bodies have an intelligence about this critical issue. This book is a call to sanity from a woman who has become known as a devout defender of women’s health rights.

"Tampering with the hormonal climate of healthy menstruating women, including teenage girls whose lives stretch ahead for decades, for the purpose of doing away with their periods is, in a word, reckless. Manipulating women’s hormonal chemistry for the purpose of menstrual suppression threatens to be the largest uncontrolled experiment in the history of medical science. Hands down.

What the media has not conveyed, what the public has not heard, what too few health professionals know, and what every woman and her doctor must know about the hazards of menstrual suppression deserves a voice. I am determined that it will have one."—Susan Rako, M.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well, well worth reading & considering. A real find!
After a severe, near-fatal reaction to "natural" progesterone (which seems, unfortunately, to be all the rage these days), I ran across Dr. Rako's wonderful book in my stack of hormone research. It was a delightful read and full of fascinating, pertinent information. Written in a open, likeable, conversational style, this book was also packed with eye-opening medical facts. I must disagree with the other reviewer on this site who had such a negative reaction to Dr. Rako's findings. Yes, Dr. Rako urges readers to become informed about what the Pill and other contraceptives like Depo-Provera can do to a delicate hormonal system - and for good reason! Unfortunately, I speak from bitter experience. How I wish I had encountered Dr. Rako's book long before I ever took the Pill for the first time, and even more, before I tried the Depo-Provera-esque natural progesterone! Talk about ruining your health and your life... Please, even if you don't agree with everything you read, at least take the time to inform yourself of the dangers of meddling with hormones before you trot down that road like a lamb to the slaughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful
I would have to disagree with the other reviewer. This book was a WEALTH of information! More and more doctors are touting the use of birth control pills and the cessation of our periods as an answer to many of our gynecological ills. After reading Susan's book--as well as doing my own independent research-- I would have to agree with many of her facts. These are not just one woman's opinions, they are indeed FACTS, that are SUPPORTED--if you care to learn the truth for yourself. I think that this book is a treasure for any woman who wants to take control of her health--and doesn't mistakenly believe that her doctor 'knows all'. A definite read. Enlightening!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well-researched Unbiased Report Every Woman Should Read
As a medical professional with Masters Degrees in Public Health and Education from Harvard University, where I too have spent countless hours researching the stacks of Harvard's Countway Library, I am impressed with the thoroughness of Dr. Rako's responsible research. Finally a medical professional, unbiased by pharmaceutical conflicts of interest and unafraid to speak truths many would rather not to have to face, has done the work of laying out, in language we can all understand, that wholesale manipulation of women's normal menstrual cycle has costs to our bodies that the drug companies do not want us to know about -- and that too few of our own doctors know. How many of us know that "the shot" can cause osteoporosis even in young women -- and that the birth control pill is now known to contribute actively to cancer of the cervix? 6,000 American women -- many of them young women with young children -- will die this year of this cancer. In addition to the important well-documented health hazards of the pill, Rako draws attention to the fact that manipulating the menstrual cycle dislocates women from our fundamental nature. Finally, as a medical professional who was trained in graduate school to critique others' medical research, I want to stress that this book is a balanced analysis of the pros and cons of doing away with women's periods. Dr. Rako has laid out the factors that will help each woman to make her own risk/benefit analysis, and will help those women for whom non-stop use of the birth control pill makes sense to choose this option. Thank you, Dr. Rako, for being a voice of sanity in a world focused on "convenience" at a cost we may know only when it is too late.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Writes: Women -- Read and decide for yourselves.
The pharmaceutical industry is developing drugs to do away with the menstrual cycles of healthy women. The market for these drugs is 2.2 BILLION DOLLARS. My book, "No More Periods? The Risks of Menstrual Suppression ..." is thoroughly researched and annotated, with references given for every factual statement, and with a reference bibliography of 226 listings. I have included the URL for any website from which quotes have been used. Every statement made by the anonymous reviewer "from Chicago," including the spelling of my name, is in error. I am alarmed that AOL or any other media publication will print an anonymous "review." The book is a carefully balanced evaluation of the pros and cons of menstrual suppression, including a full discussion of those women for whom the birth control pill is a reasonable choice. Unfortunately few doctors know the risks of menstrual suppression, which include cancer of the cervix, heart attacks, strokes, reduced sexual interest and pleasure, and depression. Women -- read, learn, and decide for yourselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Commentary on Period Suppression
The thoughts and ideas shared in this book present a tremendous case against period suppression - it is terrifying that pharmaceutical companies would actually presume to think that periods are something to just "do away with". Hasn't nature created this process for a reason? What effects will not having a normal menstruation have on the female body? Wonderfully presented in this clear & easy to understand book.

Dr. Rako, yours truly is a voice of reason... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
This book is horribly out of date, vague and poorly edited. I found a few pieces of information helpful but not much. I will certainly look for a more current book this time around. Many of the examples refer to California and are, therefore, very misleading. You'd be better off with internet research.

2-0 out of 5 stars Standard Information, Lacking Emotion
As a surrogate mother myself, I found The Guide to Gestational Surrogacy to be nothing more than a compiled mishmash of information available on the Internet. There was very little emotion in this book which is ironic as surrogacy is a very, very emotional journey. This book is also really geared more towards couples seeking a surrogate and not women looking to be surrogate's. I was disappointed at the 'barely touching the surface' information contained in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A surrogacy must have!
A Matter of Trust by Gail Dutton is a "must have" for anyone considering surrogacy of any type. It not only gives the reader pointers on expenses, contracts, and logistics, it also covers the emotional aspect of infertility and the hopes involved in conceiving a baby. It is written in a caring, knowledgable manner without a lot of medical jargon. It also has numerous resources for individuals seeking information on surrogacy. Lengthy chapters focus on treating your symptoms with simple, natural solutions. Adding protein and exercise, avoiding sugar binges and alcohol, and training yourself with relaxation techniques can bring impressive results with far fewer negative side effects than prescription medications. Still, authors Diana Taylor and Stacey Colino do thoroughly address using antidepressants, herbs, and nutritional supplements, while cautioning readers that some remedies are still being researched or require a consultation with a physician. A detailed chapter titled "Putting the Pieces Together" helps you simply use what you've learned to design the best possible program that will make your Dr. Jekyll/Ms. Hyde transformation a thing of the past. --Jill Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource for women, clinicians, and educators
Taylor and Colino have written an excellent research-based guide to managing PMS. I have used the examples and guides found in the book to teach women in the clinical setting, and I have used it to teach nurse practitioner students about options for PMS management. I particularly like the straight forward suggestions that target healthy lifestyle choices. Women who follow the diet, exercise, and stress management guidelines that effectively manage symptoms of PMS have the added benefit of knowing they are contributing to their overall health. Thank you for this wonderful contribution to women's health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman should read this book!
I am a menopausal mother with a pubescent daughter. Both of us are free of hormonal troubles, thanks largely to the advice of this terrific book. It is so full of facts and figures, from both regular and alternative medicine. It covers every possible scenario. I can't imagine anyone that couldn't find a solution for their specific needs. This book is easy to use because each chapter relates to your specific interest, or you can read it cover to cover, which I suggest, since it has great advice on living a successful, healthful, stress free life. I particularly like how, at the end of a chapter, you're given ways to assess your condition and "to do" lists that help solve specific problems. It's written in an easy to understand conversational style. I've given it to both my sisters and many of my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for any woman
A few years ago, I discovered that I had a prolapsed uterus. My usual inclination is to try to find natural therapies or remedies that will support my body and restore health, resorting to medical solutions as a last resort. When I tried to get information on this subject, it was next to impossible. When prolapse is mentioned in a woman's health book, the information is scant, and usually suggests Kegel exercises (which were discouragingly useless for me) or surgical intervention.

So, when I found this book while surfing the net, it was a welcome relief. It is packed with information on pelvic organ prolapse that you will not find anywhere else. The data regarding the structure of the pelvic floor and its relationship to a healthy and well-functioning body should be required reading for any woman with a body. :-D

The first couple of chapters dealing with pelvic anatomy and the musculature of the pelvic floor are very meaty, and as such, not always an easy read. However, there are good diagrams throughout that help to clarify the text.

Thank you Christine Kent sharing this information. It certainly fills a need and is much appreciated. ... Read more

Book Description

Having a baby is an elemental human experience—profound, even sacred to some women and their families. At the same time, it is a significant component of health care. The medical model of childbirth emphasizes the pathological potential of pregnancy and birth, while an alternative model championed by midwives focuses on the normalcy of pregnancy and its potential for health. Now available in paperback, this definitive account of the many forces that intersect over the issue of childbirth explains in a comprehensive and authoritative manner the conceptual and philosophical differences between these models. The author has brought together in a clear and readable fashion the myriad strands of history, culture, science, economics, and policy that have resulted in the current condition of maternity care in the United States. She describes the disparate backgrounds, training, and roles of certified nurse-midwives and lay or direct entry midwives, and explains the contributions of both groups. Rooks believes that maternity care and childbirth in America can, and should, be better than it is today, and offers steps to take in the direction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Midwifery
Judith Pence Rooks has written the best book available in the subject of Midwifery. It is a complete history, and is extremely well-written. It includes a comprehensive bibliography. For those of us who have had multiple home-births it is an invaluable resource. This will doubtless be the standard reference for years to come. We hope it will encourage the home-birth movement, and the use of mid-wives, as a safer alternative to physicians, in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, balanced, readable, an outstanding book!!
Every profession should be so lucky to have someone write a book like this! Rooks has comprehensively and sytematically reviewed the scientific literature pertaining to the care of pregnant and birthing women and the issues of from whom, where, and under what conditions they receive care from health professionals. She writes in a readable, straightforward manner that makes her book useful and accessible to consumers and health care providers. The author is a Centers for Disease Control-educated epidemiologist and a certified nurse-midwife who has evaluated maternal and women's health programs abroad and conducted several major research projects in the United States.

5-0 out of 5 stars The presentation of the facts in this book blew me away!
Rooks is a great researcher and puts the facts down in readable language without blame on doctors nurses midwives or parents. Most objective book on this highly controversial subject matter.
