3-0 out of 5 stars A Step into the 21st Century
This is the first CD-ROM I know of that teaches the user about some common orthopedic examinations of the arm and neck. As a teaching tool, it has some great advantages over a book: (1) the "reader" can see how each examination is performed in video clips and (2) anatomical structures related to the examination can be viewed and rotated in 3-D. The user can gain a feeling of how to do the examinations and what they are for much more easily than by following instructions and viewing photographs from an ordinary textbook. In general, the information is presented correctly, but an inconsistency or mistake pops up now and then in the audio explanation versus written explanation, in spelling, or in the examination procedure itself. These are fortunately few enough that the CD-ROM is still valuable to use. The user should simply double-check against another reference any detail that seems to be awry. This is an important attempt, the first that I know of, to bring to the consumer market a "high-tech" means of showing how to do physical examinations of orthopedic problems. That anatomical structures can be rotated and zoomed in upon is truly wonderful, but photographs of plastic models are a disappointment considering what computer graphics can bring to the user's screen these days. Each examination is presented in a sequence of five or more segments and, unfortunately, the segments can be accessed only sequentially rather than randomly. The final segment is invariably an unnecessary explanation of what constitutes a negative test for the examination. In summary, the authors have provided something valuable that we have needed for a long time. Some of the technical details of the production, however, should be improved. By using this CD, the user can immediately see what greater possibilities lie ahead with such a medium. ... Read more

Book Description

As the need for attentive health care becomes more important than ever, on-the-job risks to physicians, nurses, and related professionals have continued to relentlessly increase.Ever-changing technology, new and unforeseen hazards, the dramatic shift to managed care, and a lack of skilled workers have only heightened the difficulties of maintaining safe environments for caregivers and patients alike. For guidance on health care worker protection, safety specialists have found definitive advice and guidance in William Charney's Essentials of Modern Hospital Safety, Volumes I to III -introduced by Lewis Publishers during the early 1990s. Charney now offers all the important details of that three-volume series, combined with an additional volume's worth of information, in a convenient, single-volume Handbook of Modern Hospital Safety. It's a tragic irony: the industry dedicated to healing and recovery has now become the second highest compensable injury sector-even more hazardous than manufacturing. Make sure your health care professionals have the skills, tools and awareness to protect themselves-and, in turn, their patients-with the Handbook of Modern Hospital Safety. ... Read more

Recently the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics calculated nearly 60,000 musculoskeletal injuries to healthcare workers resulting from heavy lifting during attempts to move patients. Often the nurses, aides, orderlies, and attendants who suffered permanent injuries were forced out of the profession, straining an already inadequate pool of workers and wasting valuable knowledge and ability.Back Injury Among Healthcare Workers: Causes, Solutions, and Impacts presents the latest research on this topic from an epidemiological point of view. The book highlights case studies from actual injured workers, along with analysis of how this problem is being addressed around the world. This in-depth study also discusses the legal and rehabilitative obstacles to returning to work, and suggests new policies for the safe lifting and moving of patients. The editors compile recommended solutions from leading names in the field, detailing how healthcare facilities can create safe work environments to prevent disabling back injuries. ... Read more
