5-0 out of 5 stars Developmental and Functional Hand Grasps
"Developmental & Functional Hand Grasps" is the most valuable book on this topic published in recent years. First, it has certainly met the objectives stated in the introduction. I found it to be an exciting but easy read, with logical organization, comprehensive inclusion of theoretical approaches, and exactly the right kinds of photos and drawings. How great that the photos gave examples of so many different Activities of Daily Living, common in our lives, but seldom depicted. I especially enjoyed the Descriptions, Interesting Information, and Functional Uses. The presentation of the hand from physiological, developmental, and functional perspectives has not been done as fully but simply by other authors. Finally, the book will be useful as an important resource to students, clinicians, and researchers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concepts In Hand Rehabilitation by Stanley and Tribuzi
This book was one of the required texts in our OT and Biomechanics class. I am currently an OT student on Fieldwork). This book contains an abundance of useful information. Although it was published in 1992, it has great value. The 17 chapters are: Functional Anatomy; Wound Healing; Clinical Evaluation; Sensibility Testing; Functional Evaluation; Wound Management; Therapeutic Exercise; Physical Agents & Electrotherapy Techniques; Splinting; Skeletal Injuries; Nerve Injuries; Tendon Injuries; Rheumatoid Arthritis; Cumulative Trauma; Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy; Traumatic Injuries of the Hand (crush injuries & amputations); Returning the Hand-Injured Patient to Work. In addition, there are appendixes that include procedure for taking volumetric, goniometric, and strength measurements. While you do need more detailed for modalities, splinting, exercise, and gonimetric measurements, this book is a helpful review of these topics. The entire book is well-organized throughout( i.e.any subheadings, etc.) which makes it an even more valuable reference and study tool. There are some good colored pictures depicting wounds, lots of black and white pictures depicting various treatments. The book also contains lots of good treatment ideas as well. Case studies at end of appropriete chapters do a great job of tying all the material in a chapter together. I feel this book should be a part of the professional library of any student or practicing OT. ... Read more

Book Description

Group Dynamics in Occupational Therapy: The Theoretical Basis and Practice Application of Group Treatment, Second Edition examines seven frames of reference for group therapy. This book describes the seven-step method in leading a group, and teaches the reader how the traditional body of knowledge in group dynamics applies to occupational therapy. This edition includes information on co-leadership in today's practice, the pros and cons of its use, and how co-leadership can help therapists plan effectively and gain valuable feedback. Section Two, Group Guidelines From Seven Frames of Reference, has been greatly revised to reflect the latest in group dynamics. Marilyn B. Cole has dedicated an entire chapter to Allen's Cognitive Disabilities Groups because of its extensive development over the past decade. Chapter Five, The Behavioral Cognitive Continuum, represents an attempt to organize the many concepts and techniques occupational therapists use in group treatment, which relate to behavioral and cognitive theory. The chapter describing the Model of Human Occupation Approach has been revised to include new theoretical developments and research. The importance of occupational choices, habit maps and habitat, and roles and role scripts in the context of one's social group and culture are discussed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Key source for step 1
Definitely the key source for step 1 preparation but as the authors say: it should not be the only source of preparation.
Molecular biology and genetics should have a separate section in the review section as they are heavily tested in the actual exam. Otherwise very good and concise presentation of high yield facts. Do not forget to practice questions which are most similar to the real thing in NMS or on Kaplan website.
Careful with rating of book recommendation.
Better to make up your own mind.
Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is MONEY for Step 1
I worked hard through out my first two years of Medical school. We even started studying early for the boards. However when crunch time came and there was a limited amount of time for review I used First Aid. I got the score I wanted and felt like I was prepared for 99% of the questions I had on the boards. If you can use this book during your course work-DO IT! What I did was made flash cards from this book and quized myself. I also used this along with the Clinical Vignettes which were awesome as well.

This is so funny I bought a copy of the FA book 2003 and looking at it and comparing it to the 2002 version I saw that all the mistakes where corrected...
I had the 2002 version, which was fraught with mistakes...?
As there were many mistakes on the 2002 version of the book in the different subjects areas.
At least the ones that I had come across while attempting to read it...
Now the question is:
How come step1 had
Some mistakes Like that?
I mean being so popular and all...
What a shame...
It had mistakes in Path; biochemistry and so forth and so on...
Thanks God that the 2003 edition of the book which has so many of these necessary corrections; that drove me crazy thinking that they were meant to be at one time or another...
It was driving me paranoid...lol
which was fraught with mistakes...?
I had never seen a First Aid edition book
with so many mistakes as the 2002 version had...
Thx for your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I found this book highly useful for the usmle step 1. It summarized the topics in a reader friendly format. It helped me to study for the test without carrying so many textbooks around with me. I also recommend the following which is sold on amazon:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999600
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999635

The last 2 study guides showed me the kind of topics that were asked on portions of the USLME step 1. You can't go wrong with these 3 books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must, along with BRS Pathology and QBank
I wouldn't recommend reading this book 6 times cover to cover as the guy below me did, but it's definitely a must for Step I. Good images, great high yield info, wonderful index, great buzz-word association section, and helpful reviews of other medical texts at the end. You're making a big mistake if you don't pick this one up... if you have the time (and the lack of social life) to read this book cover to cover 6 times, more power to you... if you get through it once, more power to you. A must! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars we put up with enough of this crap in school.
I couldn't hardly stand reading it. The Author seems to think that the clinic is the place to do research. It is not, our clients or students aren't research guinea pigs. The problem with OT is the fact that there is no research to support our claims, and this is just an excuse to keep trying other things that aren't based on clinical research. For instance, Sensory Integration..........has never been proven clinically, but everyone uses it. Why not try to prove it with research, then use it? ... Read more

Book Description

Do the concepts "culture," "cultural diversity," or "teaching culture" -- so common in health care training and practice settings today -- seem vague or abstract to you? Are you having trouble conceptualizing a practical way to gain or teach the skills necessary for culturally sensitive practice or finding resource materials that can help you do it well? If so, then Culture in Clinical Care is just what you need!Culture in Clinical Care defines and describes culture and its interaction with individual experience and personality in the development of beliefs, values, and actions. Information about cultural beliefs related to health and wellness are explored as they affect intervention strategies. Based on ethnographic methods, mechanisms for culturally sensitive assessment and intervention are considered. The text goes beyond traditional fact-centered approaches, taking the perspective that culture is emergent in individuals as they interact with the physical and social environment. This one-of-a-kind book provides students, as well as healthcare practitioners, chapter objectives, chapter outlines, critical thinking questions, case descriptions for discussion, self-tests and exercises, glossary, comprehensive references, line drawing, and black and white photographs. The organization of the book benefits readers because theory, examples, and practice are interwoven. Students have opportunities to practice what they are learning, and to evaluate their own effectiveness.Culture in Clinical Care fills a niche in the health professions programs because of its theoretical approach, its emphasis on strategies and methods for clinical interventions, and its importance of strategies for practice and self-assessment. ... Book Description

Authored by three preeminent leaders in the field of occupational therapy, Measuring Occupational Performance provides a comprehensive approach to assessing occupational performance. This text begins with a background of measurement concepts and issues and explores the central theoretical concept of occupational therapy, occupation, and occupational performance outcomes facilitated by person-environment-occupation. The key actions that occupational therapists must implement when conducting assessments, reporting findings, and interpreting measurement information for intervention planning are outlined. These actions enable occupational therapists to take advantage of wisdom from other disciplines, create an organized approach, and provide a framework for best practice by taking an occupation-centered, evidence-based approach to measurement. Measurement in the context of a client-centered approach is a central theme throughout this text. Measurement issues and practices are discussed, and a decision-making framework is provided to guide the choice of assessment tools. Detailed reviews of up-to-date assessments on all aspects of occupational performance and the environment, including reviews of both quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, are provided. Strategies for using assessment information for different purposes, such as individual client outcomes, program evaluation, and quality improvement are covered. The use of occupational performance information in managed care is also addressed. This outstanding resource concludes by discussing emerging trends in occupational performance assessment, and how these trends will impact the field of occupational therapy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay review book
Some of the questions are poorly written and explanations for answers are often very brief. The diskette uses the same questions as the book, so I didn't find it very helpful. I wish the diskette would have had at least some (if not all) new questions.
The book does use many domain style questions (like the NBCOT exam). I wouldn't recommend this book to be the only book you use to prepare for the exam, but it is somewhat useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars OT exam review book
I have the earlier edition of this book, and bought this edition to get new questions. Sadly to say, there were only a few new questions. I am quite disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars OTR who took the March 2000 NBCOT exam
I used this book as a study guide to practice my timing by answering 200 question at a time within the 4 hour period given for the NBCOT exam. I found that the questions did not even come close to what was on the certification exam, but it was helpful because it looks at all aspects of therapy. My advice would be to order the NBCOT study guide because it comes the closest to what you will see on the actual exam. Good Luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars OTR Exam, yikes!
Sladyk's study book was one of the major tools I used to prepare for the OTR exam. Her inclusion of explanations to the answers (both right and wrong) was the most useful feature of the guide, providing the reader with instant feedback and info. A suggestion for future editions would be to include references with the answers so the reader could access additional information. Occasionally there would be an answer that I didn't understand and I REALLY wanted to read more about it, which isn't always an easy (or quick) task when you're not sure where to look first. Also, this study guide does not reflect the recent format change of the NBCOT exam.
