4-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric therapy
This text provides excellent information on a variety of difficulty to find topics like pediatric cardiac interventions, burn care and oncology. The authors provide excellent information on a variety of pediatric dysfunctions organized into body systems. The chapters provide excellent current information about body system structure and physiology, as well as practical applications for the occupational therapist. The chapter on the cognitive system provides one of the best orientations to mental retardation interventions I have ever seen. The biggest limitation of this book is its structure. It is organized by body systems and has specific cases illustrating disorders in these systems. This makes better as a textbook than as a reference book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource
As an art therapy intern I have found myself constantly looking for new directives and activites to use with my adult substance abuse population. The title of this book hooked me immediately and I anxiously awaited its arrival. I must say that when it finally arrived I was quite disappointed to see that its content was designed for interventions with children. It would have been helpful if that detail could have been provided befor ordering. After suspending my judgement, however, I found that it contained a wealth of activities that could easily be used as a springboard for adaptation to diverse populations and treatment issues. Ross has done a fantastic job in compiling and presenting a broad range of activities. This book would be essential for anyone working with children. It is also a tremendous asset for anyone willing to use some creativity and adaptibility. Beyond its technical significance the degree to which the author's approach honors the children she works with is tangible in her writing and presentation. In this sense the book is a success not only for its practical application but also for its ability to inspire. ... Read more

Book Description

There is growing interest in "therapeutic narratives" and the relation between narrative and healing. Cheryl Mattingly's ethnography of the practice of occupational therapy in a North American hospital investigates the complex interconnections between narrative and experience in clinical work. Viewing the world of disability as a socially constructed experience, it presents fascinatingly detailed case studies of clinical interactions between occupational therapists and patients, many of them severely injured and disabled, and illustrates the diverse ways in which an ordinary clinical interchange is transformed into a dramatic experience governed by a narrative plot. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including anthropological studies of narrative and ritual, literary theory, phenomenology and hermeneutics, this book develops a narrative theory of social action and experience. While most contemporary theories of narrative presume that narratives impose an artificial coherence upon lived experience, Mattingly argues for a revision of the classic mimetic position. If narrative offers a correspondence to lived experience, she contends, the dominant formal feature which connects the two is not narrative coherence but narrative drama. Moving and sophisticated, this book is an innovative contribution to the study of modern institutions and to anthropological theory. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for professionals & volunteers in AAA/T

As more people get involved in the field of animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy (AAA/T), it is important that references written by experienced, credible professionals are available to a wide audience. This will ensure the safety and benefit of all those involved in AAA/T. This book is just such a reference. It doesn't just apply to volunteers--health and human service professionals will also find this book to be an invaluable resource.

I initially picked up the book because I'm familiar with Mary's work in the field of AAA/T. I found myself reading the entire book in one evening. A week later, when I was preparing myself to be a guest on a radio show about AAA/T, the book became my primary reference and provided some examples.

Particularly helpful are the descriptions of the various client populations and facilities that a volunteer may visit. The suggestions for activities for each population and facility will be useful for the volunteer and professional, alike. Case studies are provided to illustrate how to apply the recommended activities.

The safety and enjoyment of the animals that participate in AAA/T is also addressed, ensuring that they will benefit from the experience.

Applying the information contained in Mary's book will help increase the acceptance of AAA/T as an effective tool in the improvement of the health and lives of the clients who receive and participate in this method of therapy.

I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything the counselor needs to know about assessment.
Where was this book when I had to take an assessment class during the fall 2001 Term?

At any rate, even though I have already taken an assessment course, I bought this book anyway for my own personal reference. Crazy you say? Consider this...

Counselors have to be good consumers of assessments and the information they yield. While no one in their right mind advocates the "test and tell approach," ascribing a level of omniscience reserved only for deity, still tests and measurements can yield a lot of useful data. But what to do with it all? This is where this text comes in.

It is simply good, ethical practice to be able to have a fairly good working understanding of the how, when, where, and whys of assessment.

Whether you are taking a class, or need a refresher, or you are like me and you are a nut when it comes to doing this the correct way, this book is for you, price notwithstanding. ... Read more

Book Description

The Consulting Therapist will prove a valuable reference to therapists working in educational settings. Occupational and physical therapists will appreciate the comprehensive review by authors Barbara E. Hanft, M.A., OTR/ L, FAOTA and Patricia A. Place, Ph.D. of the literature on school-based therapy. Current practice in pediatric therapy in any setting requires that the clinician consider how to collaborate with professional colleagues and family members to expand the impact of direct therapeutic intervention.Ms. Hanft and Dr. Place have made it easy to learn about consultation specific to OTs and PTs in educational settings, filling a major void in the literature. The authors' years of experience are evidenced by their insight into what is necessary to become a successful member of the educational team. They understand that the clinician must appreciate the philosophy, roles, and responsibilities of the classroom teacher and the unique needs of the child with a disability in the school setting. They carefully guide the reader through the requirements necessary to provide educationally relevant consultative services. The effective strategies and case studies in this 154-page manual will assist therapists with implementing a consultative model in the school setting. Clinicians will have step-by-step information to help them:

*

apply their therapeutic knowledge and skills to improve children's school performance

*

identify the six essential decisions for using an effective consultation model

*

analyze the interpersonal skills needed for each of four stages of the consultation process

*

collaborate with colleagues and families

*

resolve conflicts among team membersHelpful and time saving reproducible forms are provided for observing student performance, developing a school consultation plan, observing the environment, and assessing one's consulting skills. ... Read more
