5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource written especially for the COTA.
As a student of the author, I may be a little prejudicial, but I think this book is a wonderful pediatric sourcebook. It is written in an easy to follow manner, and defines the roles between an OTR and the COTA. It offers chapters on the different systems children may be treated in, principles of development, common diagnoses, and treatment approaches. The case studies, and suggested activities help to absorb the information given in the chapters and apply it to a clinical setting. An invaluable resource for the future COTA!! ... Read more

Book Description

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) has become an accepted form of augmenting the healing processes that occur within the walls of healthcare facilities. The same joy and comfort animals provide at home can also benefit the eager patient or resident who awaits a visit from a volunteer and their pet.

Photographer Renee Lamm Esordi accompanied volunteers and their pets on visits to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, a youth camp, and special functions. She talked with healthcare staff, volunteers of various organizations, and many others about their experiences with these special visits. She witnessed and recorded the joyous responses of patients and residents who look forward to the companionship and conversation the visits provide. She also accompanied a volunteer on another type of visit: delivering pet food and supplies on behalf of an organization whose mission is to keep those living with HIV and AIDS from having to choose between taking care of themselves or taking care of their pet.

Her documentation of these interactions illustrate the pleasure people can derive from the simple presence of animals. These photographs tell a story not only of alternative methods of healing but also of compassion, unconditional love, and comfort that these visitors can bring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practitioner's Guide to Treatment
Whether you treat people with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) or you have been diagnosed with FMS, Leon Chaitow's "Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practioner's Guide to Treatment" may be exactly what you have been seeking. As a person living with FMS--who has read MUCH about this topic--I can tell you that this book is the best thing going. This practioner's guide is especially good for those familiar with "medicalese." But, even if you're a "beginner" with FMS who simply wants to help educate those on your health care team (physicians, massage therapists, chiropractors, etc.), owning this book will allow you to lend it to your practioners. I have no doubt that, after they have seen your copy, they will want to purchase their own.

In "Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practioner's Guide to Treatment," Chaitow briefly describes a number of theories about FMS, discusses the validity of these, and explains the treatments that flow from the theories. Some of the treatments can be accomplished by persons with FMS; others require the cooperation of practioners on the health care team. Treatments are described in detail, supplemented with illustrations.

Kudos to Leon Chaitow for this fine work! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Quick Reference Dictionary for Occupational Therapy
As a final year Occupational Therapy student from Great Britain, I purchased the book as I thought it may be helpful as a guide for looking up approaches/interventions etc. as well as including policies and ethics etc. The books ethics are etc. are similar to British therapists though there are many items that seem specific to America. I have not found the book very helpful and have only used it twice in total since I purchased it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quick Reference Review
As an OT student I thought this book would be helpful in tutorial sessions and as a quick lookup for unknown subjects. I haven't found it to be very useful yet and have opened it maybe 3 times in 5 months. I would recommend K.Reed's Quick Reference to OT. That book is more comprehensive and still defines the words as well as explains the problem in detail. ... Read more

This book is very helpful to student OT's. I found the book to be very useful for completing job analysees and tasks. The measurements given in the book are very helpful as well as the format to follow for conducting job analysees.

The book did not give enough information on how to provide specific recommendations for problems. But that would be too easy! If you're an OT, you should be able to come with recommendations yourself!

This is one book I did NOT sell back to the bookstore at the end of the year. I know I will be using it again and again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful summary
This book is a useful brief review and compendium of diagnostic neurological information. The paperback version is small enough to carry around or put in a briefcase. The book packs a considerable amount of information into about 400 pages. There are a couple of dozen chapters, organized according to the usual neurological disease categories, and there are a number of nicely done charts and tables that make good, quick references. Keep in mind this book is not intended to be exhaustive and is meant as a quick review or reference. It is intended for practicing physicians, so familiarity with the technical and medical terminology is assumed, and most technical terms are not explained. The book benefits from recent research, and contains up-to-date information on such rapidly changing areas as Alzheimer's. The book has references into Adams and Ropper's larger neurological handbook for those who want more information. Overall a good, concise reference work in neurology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars COTA Exam Review Book
This book was a worthy investment. Before having purchased this book I was unsure of how well I would perform on the COTA certification exam. What I liked most about the book was how each answer was provided w/an explanation of why the correct answer was correct and why the other answers were incorrect. The five practice tests really helped me to narrow down my weak areas. I feel this is a superb study guide and would highly recommend this review!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best COTA review guide ever!!
In my opinion, this is an excellent review guide. I purchased it my last quarter as a student and I am so glad I did. Nothing could have prepared me more than this book. I took all 5 practice tests and was amazed by the results. Not only does the book give the partcipant the correct answers but it also gives you the reason why the answer is true and why the other choices are incorrect. If that is not enough, it gives you the references in which you can find that information and/or additional information on that topic. This review guide was a quick and easy way to find out what areas I needed more help with and where I could find that information before taking the COTA exam. What a great investment! ... Read more

Book Description

Exactly how do animals affect their companion humans’ quality of life? The 7th International Conference on Animals, Health, and Quality of Life set out to explore this question. A major result of this quest was Companion Animals in Human Health, a careful selection of jurored and invited papers from that conference. The articles address human animal interaction (HAI) according to the elements that define quality of life: physical, mental/emotional, and social health; functional health; and general well-being. Beginning with an overview of human animal interaction from historical and value perspectives, the authors develop a conceptual framework for HAI research and quality of life measurement. They then go on to explore the psychosocial and physiological impact of HAI. The concluding sections address the role of companion animals in human development and the training and welfare of animals in therapeutic programs.

As a state-of-the-science document, Companion Animals in Human Health is must reading for all health and social science professionals caring for clients who already have companion animals or for clients who might benefit from such interaction and thus will be of interest to those in the fields of clinical psychology, cognition, developmental psychology, family studies, gerontology, nursing, patient care, psychology, public health, and sociology.

Dementia is now being taught on courses but it can be a difficult area. The problems of this client group are quite unlike those of any other and the usual models of care used for other areas of Occupational Therapy (OT) have proved inadequate for the provision of quality OT care to these clients. This practical textbook presents a developmental model of practice for dementia care. It looks at the relationship between occupation, well-being and dementia, and examines the critical role of the caregiver in delivering therapeutic interventions to dementia sufferer, meeting the needs of both students and practitioners. ...
