A variety of cases are presented in Case Studies in Rehabilitation covering myriad topics such as orthopedics, neurology, rheumatology, and oncology. These case studies represent the primary adult pathologies, impairments, and functional limitations seen by clinicians. The case studies will also allow the reader to focus on the concept of disability for an individual when developing a comprehensive plan of care. The user-friendly format allows the user to choose from one of the many topics for practice in developing treatment plans and case analyses or to focus on one area of practice. An important function of this book is that it allows for the integration of didactic learning and hands-on practice when patients are not readily available. All case studies are presented in a narrative format with accompanying forms that are frequently encountered in clinical practice. Book Description

Telling the Stories of Life through Guided Autobiography Groups, based on James Birren's 25 years of conducting autobiography groups, discusses all the topics an organizer faces while developing a program for adults who want to recall and write down their life histories. This book is ideal for adult education programs, church groups, social workers, psychologists, gerontologists, and others who work with adults who might be interested in exploring, recording, or sharing their personal histories. It helps professionals and trained workshop leaders at community centers, senior centers, schools and other settings guide group participants in exploring major themes of their lives so that they can organize and write their stories and share them in a group with others on the same journey. This exercise is rewarding for adults of any age in a period of transition or with interest in gaining insight from their own stories. Personal development and a feeling of connection t! o other participants and their stories is a natural outcome of this process. This book provides background material and detailed lesson plans for those who wish to develop and lead an autobiography group.

The authors explain the concept of guided autobiography, discuss the benefits to the group participants, and provide logistical information on how to plan, organize, and set up a group. An appendix provides exercises, handouts, and suggested adaptations for specific groups. The book also explains a systematic method of priming memories, including the history of family and of one's life work, the role of money, health and the body, and ideas about death.

At a time when rapid change has created a widespread yearning to write down and exchange personal accounts, sharing life stories can reveal a great deal about how we have come to be the persons we are.Telling the Stories of Life through Guided Autobiography Groups shows how to organize, record, and share life experiences through a proven and effective technique. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The ticket to success for Guided Autobiography groups
September 8, 2001
Book Review by Cheryl Svensson

Telling the Stories of Life Through Guided Autobiography Groups
James E. Birren and Kathryn Cochran

I have led Guided Autobiography groups using, Telling the Stories of Life Through Guided Autobiography Groups, as my guide. The manual has proven to be the ticket to success!.
Guided Autobiography is an ordered, logical process of sequential steps that assist in writing one's life story. Each of the ten week sessions focuses on a theme that explores the important aspects of life and provides sensitizing questions as a guide to uncover the true life story. The purpose is an exploration of one's own life in a meaningful way that is
self-enriching and can also be left as a legacy for family members. The group process supports this end and provides the security and encouragement for self-exploration.
James Birren and Kathryn Cochran have provided guidelines to lead groups from the initial steps of recruiting group members to the final wrap-up session and saying good bye. Complete lesson plans are included that cover every feature of the weekly session. Each of the ten-week sessions includes a specific checklist, e.g., reminders to bring name tags, roster sheet, paper, pens, etc. to ensure success. The sensitzing questions, one of the keys to the Guided Autobiography process, are
included for each life theme. Furthermore, there are additional
suggestions and techniques for each session to stimulate creative writing skills, use of metaphor, and prompts to prime memories among others.
Having the training manual when running Guided Autobiography groups is like having a professional pack your suitcase when you embark on an extended ten week journey; nothing has been forgotten, the proper clothes for each occasion and all weather conditions have been anticipated, everything is mixed and matched perfectly, and all that's left is for you to enjoy the trip.
Telling the Stories of Life Through Guided Autobiography Groups does all that and more. Having the training manual frees you to fully engage yourself in the exciting Guided Autobiography process and grow along with your fellow travelers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
When I bought this book, I was looking for a book that would teach me how to perform accupressure on myself or others. Jack Forem's book does this, and more: it also covers basic reflexology, Shiatsu, and contains sections with "additional suggestions" to speed recovery. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants something practical about accupressure on their bookshelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit of this, a bit of that.
This book is targeted on people who are suffering from something and want to do acupressure on themselves. Personally, I was looking for a book about performing acupressure on someone else!
First of all, this book includes Acupressure, Shiatsu, reflexology and a little bit of yoga (Very briefly). For a 386 page book, it is just too many topics to cover, and it's understandable that nothing is in depth. Secondly, the pictures are just as brief as the writings. Finally, the A-Z guide covers a lot of topics from Acne to tinnitus to impetance to PMS, it takes up the book from page 78 onwards.
My conclusion is, this book is no where detailed enough for someone who is serious about acupressure, and for someone who wants to do a little acupressure on themself, unless you suffer diseases from A-Z, you'll only find 10 pages of this book useful. Hope this information is more useful than the book.......

5-0 out of 5 stars A "user friendly" guide that belongs on every bookshelf
This is a complete, well balanced and easy to read guide on the subject. I have used the book's "A to Z" guide several times in the past few weeks to "self treat" localized symptoms. The illustrations make it very easy for anyone to figure out where the important points are. The authors walk you through the whole process step by step. Ahhhhh! Temporary relief from localized pain every time I tried the book's recommendations. And the "energy tune up" section alone is worth the price of the book. There is even a section on beauty secrets! I also found the "additional suggestions" section that follows every topic area particularly helpful. Finally...the perfect holiday season gift for all my achey breaky friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works - an invaluable book for treating daily problems.
I've read many books on acupressure and other forms of pressure point massage but this book, more than any of the others, has had a profound effect on my health and my relationship with the world around me. It's not just a book on how to, but a guide and teaching tool to live life more fully. I urge everyone to read it. It helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise road map to well-being
As a patient of Steve Shimer's I have become I true believer in the power of acupuncture not only because of the relief it has brought from my chronic pain, but because of the general sense of well being I have at the conclusion of each treatment. With this new book, the authors' bring this healing power and sense of well being into the comfort of your home or office, using the techniques of acupressure, reflexology, and shiatsu. I was amazed at the clarity with which the authors were able to express the techniques and points so that they are easy to find and use. Whether you are looking for relief from a common problem or just to feel better all around, you can find what you need in this A to Z road map to well-being. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing work. A must have for physical therapists.
I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Oatis teach me firsthand at Arcadia University. This book is a culmination of many years of clinical and also teaching experience wrapped into one astonishing book. The beginning provides the basis of biomechanics and its principles in relation to bones, muscle, joints etc. From there, the book is divided into units looking at every anatomical complex in the body. Each unit is broken down to examine the bones and joints in the first section, followed by the mechanics and pathomechanics of muscle, and finishing with a look at the forces involved at each joint. You will go on to read about every anatomical muscle and what occurs if there is weakness, tightness or even a nerve injury. The remarkable part about this book is the fact that in every section there are numerous examples that relate to problems that are relevant to clinical practice. I highly recommend this book to all physical therapy students, practicing phyical therapists, and also to universities with physical therapy programs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathophysiology of the Motor Systems : Principles & Clinical
As a student of occupational therapy, this book was a required text in our neuropathology course. Every chapter is written by a PhD holder. Some of the authors are also PTs. As noted in the book's preface, this book was written for PT and OT students but would be helpful for any rehabilitation health-care practitioner. The extent of the detail is helpful in understanding both the pathophysioogy of a given disorder as well as the impact on the person. Be aware though that this book is NOT beach reading---it will take effort to digest much of the material. While only a few pictures are included, those that are presented are helpful. The book contains 6 sections: Section I includes basic information on cells, muscles, nerves, basic sensory mechanisms. Section II covers motor control, brinstem & motor control, cortical motor systems, cerebellar mechanisms, basal ganglia, motor control theories & motor learning. Section III describes motor function disorders such as spasticity, apraxia. Section IV discusses neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy, myastheina gravis, peripheral neuropathies, cranial nerve disorders. Section V describes central motor control disorders such as anterior, posterior, central and lateral cord syndrome, and other spinal cord lesions. Parkinson's Disease and Huntington's Disease are described in detail, as is various cerebellar disorders. Traumatic Brain Injury and Cerebral vascular accident's are discussed. Multiple Sclerosis is also described in detail. The final section discusses the effects of immobilization on the musculoskeletal system and on visceral function. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Breaking Plaster
I have been teaching social science research methods since 1978. As a result, I believe I have reviewed most of the textbooks in the area. As a result, I feel I can make a couple of remarks regarding the work of DePoy and Gitlin.

First and foremost, this is a textbook. It was specifically designed for students in allied health professional studies and human service curricula. Compared to most textbooks, it is NOT dry writing. Clearly, the authors have a flare for words.

Second, the primary strength of this text is its evenhandedness. More so than any other text, DePoy and Gitlin address both the qualitative and quantitative methodologies. No text completes this task as effectively and as efficiently.

When Ph.D. students (within my doctoral cohort) were being educated, they shared an unsavory learning experience. Most of us were taught to become number crunchers. The value of qualitative research was downplayed. In some cases we were specifically taught that qualitative research methodologies were hampering the image and progress of the social sciences. Thus, qualitative techniques were portrayed as a strategy employed by professors to engage the interest of undergraduate students. Qualitative methods were often adopted as a "play time." The possible exception for my observation is anthropology. However, even doctoral educators in anthropology noted the value of number crunching.

DePoy and Gitlin offer a doorway to turn our thinking around. They contend that the research question must drive the research method - not the other way around. During my education (Baccalaureate, Masters, and Ph.D.), I was taught to design research questions that could be answered by employing regression analysis or a variation of it. DePoy and Gitlin do more to legitimize qualitative methodologies than any current authors. They accomplish this task by systematically examining a wide range of methods by demonstrating the value of each.

I see two problems.

First, the authors have embarked on a Herculean task. They skim the surface of the various methodologies, but offer little depth. In the end, students will not have an adequate knowledge base to employ any single research method without some additional educational support. Perhaps such educational support is a role for the research professor. Thus, the lack of depth may be a blessing in disguised.

Second, few of my students (3 to 25%) will enroll in graduate school. Thus, it is highly unlikely that they will be actively involved in a substantive research project. These students need to employ research methodologies to improve their job performance and gain insight into self-evaluation. This is a flaw in the work of DePoy and Gitlin. The authors do not directly address self-evaluation.

In the end, I believe that DePoy and Gitlin offers the best preparation for graduate school. Nothing comes closer. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book for learning therapuetic activities
This book is a good activity reference for students who are learning how to complete therapeutic activities. It explains what you will need to complete the activity, how to complete the activity, and what precautions (if any) that you must follow. I used the blank and very detailed activity analysis form that was included in this book many times in my therapeutic media classes. I was glad that the book had an example of a completed activity analysis form so that I could learn how to complete one properly. I also liked the many illustrations/drawings that were in this book. They helped me to learn how to complete the activity when the written instructions just didn't seem to sink in. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Game play
This is the second edition of an important book, first published in 1986 and edited by Charles Schaefer, professor of psychology from the Fairleigh Dickinson University and Steven Reid, who is in private practice in New York. Games are a very important part of child development and there are some of us, who will never stop playing games, even in adulthood. Games can be played by the person for his or her own enjoyment, but it is also a tool of communication between the professional or therapist and the child, adolescent or client. It is essential in play therapy and the first edition was very helpful in the new classification of how games were used in therapy to further development and emotional growth: communication games, problem-solving games, ego-enhancing games and socialization games. The first edition catalyzed specialization in the field of game play therapy and this second edition is devided into five parts: Games to elicit communication and fantasy expression, using traditional games in child therapy, game play for children in crisis, therapeutic games for children with ADHD and teaching social skills through games. This second text is therefore an illustration of how this field has undergone a specialization in evaluation and problem solving of many problems of childhood and adolescence. I especially found the chapter by Steven Reid on "Therapeutic use of card games with learning disabled children" and the chapter by Billie Corder on "Using games and game play in group therapy with sexually abused children and adolescents" worth reading both due to its review, case story and practical approach. This textbook is recommended to mental health clinicians (psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists) working with children and adolescents.
